I honestly have no idea what they can do. Even if they came out with their Game Pass equivalent and shocked us with day one games, they don't have enough studios to sustain that sort of model.
1. Probably no back-compat for PSVR 1 titles based on the tech they are using here 2. The potential price based on the tech could be more expensive than the PS5 console itself
So they give us a demo disguised as a PS+ game? And Mortal Shell has no PS5 version? I won't be subbing again to PS+ when mine runs out in January at this rate...
Still remember when Godfall launched for £70. Funny times...
Not a bad month, but no real 'banger'. Would have been nice to get something like Sackboy to mark PS5 anniversary. Didn't sell very well and deserves some attention.
I'll grab Deathloop for £30. Was really hoping for a proper discount on Demon's Souls, but alas. For £6 more, I can pre-order Elden Ring! Bit of a no brainer really!
Sony need to sort out these 1st party prices. £43-£55 for games that came out 8-12 months ago. Really regret getting my PS5 Digital now...
Nice to see Deathloop doing well! I know the physical charts, especially UK, don't mean much these days, but I can only assume it did just as well digitally. It also topped the Steam charts for PC, so great to see Arkane getting recognition.
Definitely won't be Spring since we have Horizon FW, GT7, Ghostwire Tokyo and Forsaken releasing during that window. I think it will be a summer game. Maybe July-August. Can't see it being much later than that as Sony always avoid the holiday season.
Let's be real, Rockstar were never going to do a proper next-gen version. They just want a minimum effort port to sell the game again for £70 and to keep people playing GTA Online during this new gen selling those Shark Cards.
As someone with a PS5, this doesn't directly make a difference to me, but it's a scummy move for PS4 owners still struggling to get a hold of a PS5. They essentially need to pay £80 to ensure they don't need to buy the entire game again on PS5. Starting to get major PS3 vibes from Sony this gen and I hate to see it...
As someone on PS5, this doesn't bother me from a customer perspective. But with so many people still stuck on PS4 and looking to upgrade to PS5, this is an embarrassing look for them in terms of reputation.
They aren't squeezing wallets for the sake of it. The reality is they just wanted an excuse to have a PS5 physical release on store shelves since all other first party games have been delayed for the rest of the year.
They've offered free upgrades in the past for Spiderman MM, Sackboy, etc. This is the only reason they have changed tune for this Director's Cut and Death Stranding.
To be expected really. This is now an Xbox 1st party studio. The game is old and was never promised a next gen upgrade.
If Insomniac released Sunset Overdrive remaster on PS5, do you think they'd do an enhanced Series X version? Of course not. So we shouldn't expect the same here.
I can understand his reasoning, but they could have offered an optional free DLC pack for the lip-synced Japanese FMV scenes for the PS4 version. The reality if they obviously thought it wasn't worth the effort.
In all honesty I'm seeing a Feb/March 2022 release window. If they had the confidence this was going to hit 2021, they would at least commit to 'Fall 2021' rather than dead silence.
The last we heard from Herman Hulst is they are trying for 2021 but won't rule out a delay until 2022 if quality demands it.
A 2022 release would mean PS5 has a poor line-up for the rest of the year, but 2022 could be something magical!
Have they stated how this will be cooled since you can't fit one with a heatsink? Will the fan speeds be increased when it detects you have one installed?
I just use a Samsung T7 1TB SSD and ferry the games back and forth when needed for native PS5 games.
Much cheaper and easier than adding even more internal heat to the PS5 console.
@Kidfried
They called the game a "mega-hit" and purchased the studio afterwards.
We can talk about what Sony class as a "mega-hit" all day, but I can only assume the game sold well enough for them in their eyes for the budget it received.
Sony aren't in the business of losing money on games.
The reason Days Gone didn't get a sequel is because it didn't sell enough games at launch at full price.
Here's a quote from the director;
"If you love a game, buy it at f***g full price", and implied that part of the reason Days Gone did not receive a sequel was because it did not turn a significant enough profit.
@ChrisDeku The point was if just over 500k is a success for a Sony game in the first 2 months, vs Rift Apart selling 1.1m units in 2 and half weeks, then clearly the game must have been much lower budget. If that means it should have been less than £70 is a totally different question.
So only just over 500k sales for Returnal after 2 months (reports are to end of June), and Sony consider it a big success?
Does that mean the game was cheap to make and shouldn't have cost £70 if it wasn't an AAA production?
@Th3solution If it's something simple like just unlocking the frame rate to 60FPS, it involves minimal effort from the developer and can lead to some extra sales from PS5 owners that might not already own the game.
@talocaca All of the previews have been signing the praises of this game and a few claiming this could be a sleeper GOTY contender like how Hades came out of nowhere. Obviously they've only sampled 4-6 hours with the previews, but it's sounding very promising.
All we need now is for Horizon FW to be delayed until 2022 and that will be the cherry on my cake of big fat disappointment for the 2nd half of 2021 from Sony. Came out the gates swinging with PS5 for the first 6 months and now the next 6 months look barren.
@Amppari "No one really cares about a game that is only okay" - Jim Ryan
As a platform holder, what sort of message does that send to 3rd party devs, especially indies? Not a good look. He needs taking out of the firing line big time.
Jim Ryan needs to be taken out of the public spot light and let Herman Hulst do the PR. This guy is a walking disaster in terms of anything PR related.
@Bleachedsmiles The issue is there needs to be a replacement of lost revenue if that was to happen. As of Dec 2020, PS+ had 47.4 million subscribers. That's a hell of a lot of money to lose to remove the online pay barrier.
@Ssimsim
It's a 12 month timed exclusive like Deathloop from Bethesda.
The deals were made before Xbox acquired them.
@Keyblade-Dan
Yep. Apparently she left because of her health issues.
"You can’t make games if you’re not healthy,” she says. “I started wondering whether there wasn’t a way for me to make games while feeling better. I took the decision to quit before it was too late.” - Ikumi Nakamura
To be expected considering the deafening silence up until now. PS5 fall line-up looking pretty light now, but we should have a killer 2022 to make up for it.
@thefourfoldroot The Ultimate Edition is heavily aimed at FUT players. You get 4600 FIFA Points, which cost £32 separately, 4 days early access, 1 TOTW player etc. So yes, it's to get people addicted to that game mode with all the gambling aspects.
This is EA, so I will remain sceptical.
The big issue for me is no cross-play play again.
I had to go back to the PS4 version over the PS5 for FIFA 21 as the it was majorly underpopulated vs PS4, especially for weekend league games.
If they at least enabled cross-play with Series X/S, then at least that will help with that issue.
And what makes it worse this time around is if you want both gen versions, it's £90!
£70 for PS5 version or £90 for cross-gen version? They are having a laugh. Not paying those prices for an annual sports game getting milked with pay to win microtransactions. LOL
Sounds like this will be a fall 2022 or even an early 2023 game then. Just hope graphically it looks better the next time it is shown, as the reveal trailer looked terrible even compared to FF7 R on PS4 Pro, never mind the new PS5 version.
It's a roadmap that we need. Just feels like everything is slipping into 2022 and they are slowly giving us the bad news. Next will be Ghostwire Tokyo. Then worst case Horizon FW could still slip.
Absolute bargain for $10 considering all the additions. If it was a straight port I'd be hesitant, but this looks well worth the value. A nice bit of news considering I expected this to be a $30 upgrade like Ghost of Tsushima.
Very surprised to see the excitement for Demon Slayer. I'm a huge fan of the anime, but nothing convinces me this won't be the usual anime cash-in on the popularity of the series. So I'll be waiting for reviews.
Death Stranding looks great value for money though. $10 for all these additions and improvements. Count me in.
I think both PS5 and Series X are selling as many units as they can ship in the UK. Both sell out pretty quickly. Series S? Not so much. Readily available the majority of the time in the UK.
@kingv84 Or if they can't afford a second or third console, worst case scenario you could play a potential sequel through Game Pass xCloud streaming. Not ideal, but good option if on a budget.
I think the big aspect this game has in it's favour is the price. It's not £70. It's £60 RRP and you a quick Google shows many retailers have it listed for as low as £49 for the physical version. Great price for a next gen only game on a Sony console.
The issue for some people will be it's technically an Xbox game now, and it depends if that bothers them.
Really makes me question if there will even be a fabled 'big' event from Sony. I honestly think they will keep the State of Play events going every other month and focus on stuff that's actually coming out this year. Then maybe save the GOW Ragnarok reveal for The Game Awards since that's a 2022 release anyway.
