Re: Square Enix Demands Bigger Games, Faster Development as Sales Continue to Slump

RudeAnimat0r

Square Enix is always "underperforming" and always thinking bigger issue better. To their credit, they did try that wave of smaller games but it sounded like they were all duds - I tried the demo for Valkyrie Elysium and it was BORING. They also tried their big Western swing with Forspoken and that also flopped.

They spend so much time and money on stuff like FF7R and there is only so big a market for it - only so many people have nostalgia for this stuff. They need to focus on new RPG IPs that do not break their bank and have a chance of finding new players.

Re: Expedition 33's Sublime Success Sparks Chatter About Final Fantasy's Future

RudeAnimat0r

I wouldn't mind seeing FF revert to turn-based, but I think they just need to refocus on making great JRPGs rather than giant spectacle games. I really think their death march since FF13 toward hyper fantasy realism with insane budgets has been their biggest issue.

And it's very impressive that Clair Obscure is off to a great start, it still has to sell a lot more for Square Enix to think it can do the numbers they need/think FF does.

Re: First PS Plus Extra Game for June 2025 Confirmed

RudeAnimat0r

@MisterWhen They are also making Control 2! I'm glad Remedy is trying something different for them in between big SP games. And I wouldn't say they're chasing multiplayer money, the post says all post-launch content is free and it's not even a premium release.

For what it's worth I think FBC looks fun. I like a good co-op PvE experience, and nobody makes better settings than Remedy.

Re: Devolver Will Be 'Leaning Further into' Its Existing IPs as Best-Selling Games Revealed

RudeAnimat0r

If this is in addition to them continuing to publish wild, experimental stuff, then great. Otherwise, it's a bit alarming to hear one of the main indie pubs is focusing on franchises and established IP.

Then again, the cynic in me wonders if they think they need safer bets in the new economy we see taking shape every day. With so much uncertainty a lot of organizations are plotting safe routes ahead.

Re: Reaction: Switch 2 Looks Solid But the Many PS5, PS4 Ports Won't Spook Sony Yet

RudeAnimat0r

I don't expect the Switch 2 to have really any effect on PlayStation. At this point they exist in parallel lanes. Maybe a few sales that might have been a PS5 turn into NS2 sales, but I largely feel like most people are tied to an eco system and brand, for better or worse.

I think it's likely I'll get a NS2 eventually. I got a Switch Lite 3 years into the Switch life cycle and I can see myself getting one of these once it has a larger library of Nintendo games and there's possibly a price cut or hardware revision.

Re: Poll: Are You Playing Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii?

RudeAnimat0r

I'm a little tempted, the gameplay looks pretty wacky and fun. However, I think I'm happy playing the main entries and skipping the side games.

I burned myself out on the series back on PS3, and I think playing one of these every couple of years is the right amount for me. I still haven't finished Infinite Wealth yet.

Re: Talking Point: Has the Market for AA Games on PS5 Really Disappeared?

RudeAnimat0r

I don't know that I agree with this. I think the AA term is very hard to square. There have been a lot of notable failures, but it seems like there have been successes as well. I think differentiating what is an "indie" game and what is a "AA" game is very murky.

The fact that publishers like Don't Nod are still releasing games points to the fact there are AA games. I don't think their games havent met sales expectations is a lack of market, I think it's a visibility issue.

Re: Dragon Age: The Veilguard Failed Because It Wasn't Live Service, EA CEO Seems to Suggest

RudeAnimat0r

I haven't played it and recently resisted buying it steeply discounted. The CEO comments are silly, but they have to say something to explain why they failed their shareholders. I think scapegoating lack of live service features is easier than explaining why a generally good but not exceptional entry in a dormant franchise didnt break out.

Again, I haven't played it, but it seems like everyone has a theory for why it didn't break out like DAI, which I think is Bioware's best selling title. There are tons of factors for why it's core audience didnt show up, nor the greater community, and I think most of us can agree that lack of live service elements is pretty low on our lists, if present at all.

Re: Poll: How Would You Have Reacted to a Live Service God of War Announcement?

RudeAnimat0r

I picked the cynical one. I just don't see a logical live service games from this franchise, at least one that resembles the GoW games that have existed thus far. The other thing is, screw GoW! These are great games, but I don't actually love the franchise. I would love nothing more than Santa Monica and Sony moving on from it for a while. The reboot series has made 2 excellent games, and I was amazed how they reinvented the franchise, but I don't just want more and more of them.

Re: Would You Pay $100 for GTA 6?

RudeAnimat0r

I don't doubt GTA6 will be worth $100, buy I don't really care for the series so I wouldn't buy it. I've still never bought 5 after all of these years. I'm always curious if I would enjoy it - I could not get into 4. If people love 6 maybe I'll buy way down the road when it's ported PS8.

Re: Sony Cancels Bluepoint, Bend Studio PS5 Games, One Being a Live-Service God of War Title

RudeAnimat0r

This is a major bummer. It's staggering the amount of money Sony has invested in games this gen that have either flopped or been canceled.

I agree with all the comments about GoW being a pretty odd choice for live service. Like, what does that even look like? Everyone can't be Kratos! Like, at least Horizon, when you squint you can see that world populated by characters other than Aloy, but GoW?
