2024 brought us lots of fantastic games, but one that remains largely overlooked (or, at least, it feels that way) is Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.
Releasing on PS5 and PS4 in January of last year, the game attracted critical acclaim and lots of love from those who played it, but never made as big an impact as it perhaps deserved to. Still, having said that, the game recently confirmed it's reached "well over" 2 million players:
In a social post, the player count figure is made official, and it comes alongside a tease of more things to come for the Prince of Persia series.
Indeed, we already know about side-scrolling roguelike The Rogue Prince of Persia, which is poised to come to consoles eventually, and there's also the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake still in development.

Whether the post is suggesting yet more is on the way, it's hard to say.
Earlier this year, it was reported the game had sold about 1.3 million copies in its first year. While that's not to be sniffed at, the team was dispersed among other projects within Ubisoft rather than kept together, suggesting it wasn't quite performing well enough for work to continue.
The game did receive some post-launch support and DLC despite this, though perhaps it would've gotten more if the sales were stronger.
Anyway, 2 million players ain't bad, and it sounds like Prince of Persia is sort-of back on the agenda for Ubisoft. Whether that includes a follow-up to The Lost Crown is unknown, but we'd be there for it.

Didn’t they get rid of the dev team about 4 or 5 months ago though?
Teases more? They shut the F'ing studio down 😅😂😂😂😂
Fantastic game, really polished. It was criminal to shut that studio down...
"great games sell"
One of the worst decisions ever made by Ubisoft to disband that team, and that is telling a lot.
Would love to get more, but I'm scared Ubisoft will turn it into AC as they seem to do with every IP they invest in.
Ubi doesn’t know what it wants. Great games? Mediocre mass market stuff? With this strategy, I wouldn’t buy any stocks (disclaimer: I only have depts for my flat and am very happy with it).
PoP was my favorite IP back in the PS2 generation. I'm looking forward to the Sands of Time remake, but I truly hope we get a new 3D entry at some point. A sequel to PoP 2008 would be cool, or even another reboot. I'd also take another entry in the SoT story line, but the last one, Forgotten Sands, had a pretty underwhelming story, although the platforming gameplay was top-notch.
Game was a masterpiece. Sadly, most people didn't even give it a chance.
Disbands the dev team despite critical success. Rubs a sales milestone in their faces months later. Reaaaal classy.
Fire all developers
Wait for the game to sell
Tease more
Profit
Unless they're referring to the Sands of Time remake as the series "continuing," I don't know what they're talking about. They disbanded the team! IIRC no one from the team was fired, but they're working on different Ubi games. Would they really go through the trouble of getting the band back together? I mean, good on em if so, but that makes the decision to split them up even more baffling.
Great game btw, which I feel like can be lost in this discussion
As long as it has the real prince not some random people as the protagonist, can’t wait.
Possibly the best Metroidvania I've ever played and one of the most fun games I've played this gen. Highly recommend this one! After putting much time into it, I recommended it to quite a few people and none of them have been disappointed by the game itself. The puzzles though. They'll kick your butt. And some have been disappointed by that!
@Lup and many for some really odd reasons...
I'm glad people are still finding their way to the game, but it's telling that they confirmed 1.3m sales versus 2m players. It came to Plus, so this isn't entirely surprising?
I agree that Lost Crown was just a thoroughly well made Metroidvania game, and I thought it was a great fit for PoP.
It was a really great game. After I played it, I found myself wishing some of this game’s features were present in other games within this genre (like the brilliant “photo” system)
Yeah, i dont know if i want to support Ubisoft after canning all the developers.
Please oh please more of this format! And bring back the devs that made the lost crown! Actually do that first.
Honestly, Lost Crown might be my favorite Ubisoft game of all time. It’s such a solid title, one of the best Metroidvanias of all time, which is really saying something, given how crowded the genre is and how many solid titles exist in it.
Fair, I hope Sands of Time remake happens. Lost Crown is ok. I bought it twice. I still barely played it. It's not a bad game just not great. I'm not big on Metroidvanias either. Pitfall Lost Expedition I have beaten plenty of times, Prime 1 was more clear then 2 and 3 and Dread was hmm. Axiom Verge was ok.
But supported Ubisoft still. Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope I binged to 5/6 of the game so to me I got more out of it. I support their niche games, that's it. I have to get back into Kingdom Battle past world 3 and finish the rest of Sparks of Hope.
But I'm on Dream Tactics or other tactics games of interest right now besides other games of other genres on and off.
I'd rather take a Red Steel 3 honestly. I'll get Beyond Good and Evil 1 at some point but otherwise Ubisoft barely has anything I want. They make whatever they can on occasion, but their main stuff I have no interest in supporting so I have to wait for the few interesting smaller titles good ideas they make from time to time.
@Ryu_Niiyama 👏🏾 Black 👏🏾 lady 👏🏾 courtroom 👏🏾
I just bought this on a sale and look forward to playing it, i guess it kinda got lost in the noice, but when a game is good, your'e keep getting reminded of it online, thats why it got my attention.
@Keyblade-Dan
Yeah it's a tad stupid, probably realised the potential after the fact, bit of an egg in face moment 😂
Easily my GOTY 2024 absolute banger!
I Loved this game and it was such an idiotic decision to shut the studio down.
Don't celebrate something in an empty room.
I'm still yet to play this game, but It's one of those games I bought at full price to support the type of game.
Loved this game, one of my top 5 favorite metroidvanias. But to say they ‘shut down the studio’ that made it isn’t really accurate… they redeployed the people who worked on it to other projects. It’s not like they shut down a studio and fired everyone. It’s more of a ‘hey these are talented people who have just finished a 4 year project, here’s the next thing we want you to work on as we employ you’…
@AhmadSumadi You are the first person to recognize that (and tag me) so I thank you! You made my day!!
