There's been an overwhelmingly negative reaction to the news that The Outer Worlds 2 will be priced at $80 / £70 when it launches on PS5 this October.
Following on from a solid showing at the Xbox Games Showcase, Obsidian's upcoming RPG was confirmed to be one of Microsoft's first forays into the realm of $80 releases, with the game's Steam page listing the dreaded pre-order price.
For many — including ourselves — the immediate response was disbelief. Although Microsoft had previously stated its intentions to raise retail prices, we never thought The Outer Worlds 2 would be the title used to try and push this additional expense.

The Outer Worlds is a good game with a solid role-playing core — and everything we've seen of this sequel looks set to be an improvement. But with all due respect to Obsidian and its sci-fi property, The Outer Worlds is not the kind of project that most people picture when they think of mega-budget, AAA gaming.
Indeed, it's bad enough when Sony and Nintendo are attaching $80 price tags to their first-party bangers; so asking for what is currently the maximum price of a retail release for The Outer Worlds 2 seems insane — at least from the outside looking in.
Again, the overall reaction to the confirmation has been beyond damning. Across Reddit, social media, and comments sections like the ones here on Push Square, it's been brutal.
We ran a public poll when the news broke on Sunday evening, and the results speak for themselves. A whopping 53% of over 1,000 voters said there's simply "no way" they'd pay $80 for The Outer Worlds 2. Another 35% told us they weren't planning on buying it anyway. Ouch.
Meanwhile, only 12% of voters said they're still really looking forward to the game, despite the price tag.

So, it's fair to say that PS5 players ain't happy about the situation — but does that mean Xbox is betting everything on Game Pass when it comes to The Outer Worlds 2?
We've seen plenty of people suggest that the price point is a direct attempt at trying to push potential buyers towards subscribing to Game Pass instead, but with how much success the Team in Green has been having with its recent PS5 ports, we struggle to see the worth of such a strategy.
How do you think The Outer Worlds 2 will perform when it releases in October? Is it doomed to fail on PS5, or does Microsoft know exactly what it's doing? Feel free to shrug in the comments section below.

Good luck with that. I will wait for the eventual sale.
It is the wrong game to be the first at that price point. It makes no sense whatsoever...
My friend really liked the first game, and was looking forward to the second game. When he saw the price tag for TOW2, he just said "nope." It also doesn't help that the physical version says "internet required" on the front cover, so the full game might not even be on the disc (he's a big physical collector).
I mean, OW1 almost didnt feel like a full price game, IDK what theyre thinking with this one.
Sony is looking really good right now not raising their prices on first party to 80, wonder how long that will last?
Better get used to it. Soon all new games will be starting at $80. Wait until GTA VI releases...
Terrible idea to purchase outright, which makes the Gamepass offering all the more enticing. Xbox really wants you in that subscription ecosystem.
@Americansamurai1 It would be such a power move if Sony stayed at their current prices (cope I know) and will give them a lot of good will from us players.
I still think 80 for SOME games is a fair deal - provided they are not released under the "release broken, (maybe) fix later" category we see all too often.
Games haven't seen a price increase since 2020, but inflation has been very high since.
Unless significantly better than expected, this game just doesn't fit in that conversation though.
As others have suggested, this is potentially an effective marketing strategy from Microsoft. Of course, you don't have to pay $80, you could buy an Xbox and game pass and play it as part of the cost of your subscription along with all these other games. Over time it could entice alot of players
I really liked the solid combat and tongue in cheek nature of OW, but at the end of the day it really was a AA game. I’m sure this is a big improvement since the IP was established and could get more funding and a bigger team but come on. You push $80 on this one?? That seems like sending the game out as the sacrificial lamb to see if people will pay or not.
I also agree with the above, worst case it makes gamepass an even bigger value. Xbox is so weird this gen.
Here's the scenarios:
Hardcores fans will pay full price (MS wins)
Those with access to gamepass will likely play that way (MS wins)
Some will wait for a sale and after one year maybe it will be at $60 or $70 (still expensive). After two years $40 or $50 (MS wins because we will be paying more than we usually pay right now for a discounted game)
Some won't buy and won't play it (but they probably would never want to play that game anyway)
IMO MS wins and we all lose lol
The Outer Worlds didn’t look anywhere near worthy of an £80 price tag. Microsoft are just trying to make their gamepass look all the more enticing by ramming the prices up to own games (well, with what’s on the discs, that’s not even a thing anyway). I hope Sony keep their games as they are, they probably won’t, but I’ll definitely say that I don’t feel short changed buying Sony first party titles over Microsoft’s ones.
I mean, Sony are also pricing games at £70. I wouldn’t pay £70 for any game, whether it’s by Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo.
I liked the first one despite its many faults, but I wouldn't pay over $60 for a sequel. And just for these price announcements, I'll pay even less.
@Rob_230 That's a good way of looking at thing. However me and many people on this site are just way too deep in the PSN ecosystem to just move to a completely different console purely for Gamepass as much as a amazing value for money it is.
I feel like they’re throwing Obsidian under the bus with this one.
Im NEVER paying £80 for any game. And I hope most people dont
Not a big deal for me. Play it on Day 1 via Game Pass on my Seriex X. Pickup a physical copy for PS5 Pro after a price drop.
I know most people do not have the luxury of owning multiple platforms per generation.
This is just how I plan to do it.
Is this just a US thing? Here in the UK Outer Worlds 2 on the PS Store costs £70, exactly the same as Sony's first party games. So not really sure what the issue is other than the fact that it is not as cheap as Mario Kart World (£67 on the eshop).
I'll enjoy it on Game Pass, but I wouldn't be paying $80 for it, but then I rarely pay full price for ANY game anymore.
I like spending money on video games, even some really good money. May it be fantastic big productions, some indy gems or the occasional "double A" miracle. And I think most of the pricing discussions or comments are often abysmal. But even with all that, I was absolutely dumbfounded when I saw the 79,99 EUR price tag on the PlayStation store.
So that is why the presentation was about "everything is bigger, we doubled on whatever" and so on.
Plus, the deluxe edition for 99,99 EUR has the wonderful "five days early access" desease included (although also an expansion pass).
@Ooccoo_Jr Currency exchange moved back into the UK’s favour recently so last time we got the double price increase from £50 to £70 and this time we get zero.
I guess I will have to wait a loooong time to play cuz im not paying 80$…$30 tops
@Oram77 Haha oh totally. Have been a ps player since 1997 and don't plan on going anywhere else! But for younger generations without the brand loyalty? I think that's what MS might be banking on in the long run.
Will definitely wait for a sale 🤑🤑🤑👀
Kudos to Obsidian for managing to release two commercial flops in a single year, because no way in hell people are gonna buy this game for $80.
@Lowdefal Yeah like @ChrisDeku says, we got bumped from £50 to £70. I’m still not over that one.
It's intentional price so gamers just subscribe/rent the game on gamepass rather than buying it, it's there to make gamepass seems like a really a good value (which is true if you have a lot of time for gaming and have xbox console). Same with doom the dark ages, good games, just not worth $70 because gamers get less compared to doom 2016 and eternal.
People complain now but wait until PS6 comes out. New games will be over 100 dollars on average. When i didn't wanna blow my wad buying games I'd just wait. Wait for the new to wear off. Very rarely do i ever feel the need to own a game on day one anymore.
They are out of this world. Never payed more than 60€s for a game. The only fool I know who payd 120€s for a game, was my dad for Story of Thor, because I needed that game. Bless my old man for that stupidity.
Death Stranding 2 looks like a £70 game.
The Outer Worlds 2 does not.
Just like the late 80's and early 90's Nintendo showed the way for the rest to follow.
I sure as heck won’t be buying it anytime soon. Or even touching it on gamepass with my series X.
$80 for this? Nah. I’m good.
Let MS slap 80 bones for all their games. If it doesn't sell then they gonna learn the lesson how it feels to put the wrong price tag.
Me? I just watched a 30 minutes preview of Ninja Gaiden Ragebound and it looks like a very solid classic 2D Ninja Gaiden. So KT/Dotemu/The Game Kitchen will get my money and i'm sure the game is a lot cheaper than Outer Worlds 2.
Good thing I have so many games to play so I can wait for a sale.
I can't blame them really, customers have sent the publishers and platform holders the message that they'll pay silly money for 'early access' periods and whatnot.
Gaming is really cheap for me these days. I've got such a big backlog that I've got games to play for years without having to buy anything new. Bar one or two releases a year - Helldivers 2 and Astrobot got me at launch last year, and Death Stranding 2 might this year - I can usually wait for a deep sale.
It is a lot, and tbh this isn't my kind of game anyway.
But here's the thing confusing me, people are getting really upset over the price, and yeah it's high and everyone is blaming Nintendo...but it's the same price both Spider-Man 2 and God of War: Ragnarok are on the PSN Store right now, and have been for months. Standard editions.
I know you can get both much cheaper as physical editions, but this will be the same if people wait a bit.
It’s a self-regulating market: The publishers‘ goal is to maximise the revenue. If the price point is too high, the total revenue will be lower.
Many publishers don’t seem to know WHAT we want to play. But they seem to know HOW MUCH we are willing to pay.
I'll pay $80 for a game I feel like I HAVE to play right now. This ain't it for me.
Don't get me wrong, I've never paid 70 quid for a game and don't plan to anytime soon, but it's funny what people assign value to. Have you gone out to a restaurant with your partner lately? I guarantee you that cost £70 at least and your meal didn't take four years and 100+ people to make it.
It just doesn’t look like a very good game. I felt the same way when Outer Worlds 1 came out and never bothered to play it. Maybe they are good games, maybe they aren’t, but I know one thing: If after seeing it and being so unimpressed I wouldn’t bother to waste the time to download it for free on gamepass, I certainly won’t be wasting $80 on it.
Happy to wait and see how it sells before predicting anything. Maybe Microsoft are just capitalising on Sony’s marketing slogan - “PlayStation, for the payers” 😁
Gamepass means Microsoft can charge whatever they want to “own” their titles, I’ll never pay it and still get to play through their games for the cost of a month’s sub. Frustrating for those that don’t have those options though and still want to play Outer Worlds 2.
sony will raise prices to $80 its just a matter of when
I’ll just wait for deep sales on games like any that go into gamepass day 1. Theres no reason to support them day 1 and at higher prices if they turn around and offer for a fraction elsewhere
@Oram77 they have zero reason to. They’re coasting in terms of hardware sales, they’ve been able to reduce their first party output this generation without any negative impact to market share and their biggest competitor is bringing all their previously exclusive IP to the ps5. If the industry is unanimously increasing software pricing Sony sure as hell will follow suit.
Just wait till playstation games are priced at $80 too
@ChrisDeku you are saying Sony first party games jumped from 50 to 70? I dont believe you. It definately was 60 too.
@Ooccoo_Jr Exactly! I know i’m in the minority here, but I’ve said it before. I think $80 is a reasonable price to ask for some games (especially polished triple A games) when you look at the amount of time and resources it takes to develop them. Does that mean i like it? Hell no. But you can always wait till it lowers to $50 in a few months.
I also see people buying $120 shoes or $40 for a vinyl record. I just bought two tickets to a jazz festival for $300+. It’s all relative
@Neither_scene Yup, considering some people have said this PS5 era has terrible (they're wrong), Sony have been making bank, mostly from HellDivers 2 and 30% from every Forza copied sold.
It will do fine. I really am not bothered. Just don't buy games at launch for full MSRP.
I think Microsoft is testing the waters here. Some of their games have been big hits on PS5, and if they can increase their revenue by 25% per unit, of course they're going to try.
I also don't buy that this isn't a proper AAA game. I'd be more likely to pay $80 for an Obsidian game than Halo or Gears.
@Lowdefal They were, I also remember paying £60 for games throughout most of the PS4 generation then it was upped to £70 for PS5.
@Foxx_64740 but MS are trying to get people to buy their games now and has clearly just turned more people off buying this game. Obsidian is a very efficient AA studio with multiple releases and deserve to get good sales on PS.
Game Pass is a flat line (it barely matters what they put on it, it just carries on at the same level) but selling games on PS has been a massive vertical line for sales, but that will start to decline and then what? Numbers have to go up, so game pass price hikes, job losses, budget cuts.
I'm glad they seem commited to Obsidian at the moment, but all it takes is one person to decide 'nope we don't want to fund them any more' and they get shut down and absorbed into Bethesda or something similarly tragic haha.
Sell ToW2 for ~£50/$60 and I (and many others) buy it day one to support them for their quirky niche rpg's. I didn't even finish the first one, but I enjoyed it enough to buy the second at the right price.
I may be a part of the problem, but I loved the first game even though it was surprisingly short. I have to play the 2nd game.
Played the first game and it was just okay at the original price point. After expedition 33 there is no way AA games should be priced that high.
Maybe people will stop paying money for Unreal Engine Open World Shooter of the week now.
Waiting for the bargain bin it is then
@REALAIS PS4 gen was £50 - £55. No Sony first party games were over £55 that I can recall. Some third party games made it to £60 before the end of the gen.
Edit: It looks like Death Stranding was actually £59.99, so it was probably around that time that prices had started to adjust for currency conversion and edged towards the $60/£60 price, and the the increase to $70/£70 happened very shortly afterwards making it feel like a double increase in one go.
Last time I checked, even the first game's Switch port recurrently goes for $25 with the DLC pass included. It's the basic sale tracking literacy that goes down horribly with players of all kinds these days, abundant online tools be damned. And then these people go and flush two-digit sums down the MTX drain.
To the Playstation gamer that buy this for $80. I want to give a big thank you for funding Microsoft game development so that Xbox gamers can enjoy this on Game Pass, and us PC gamers can enjoy this for vastly cheaper when we pick it on a key seller site for $60.
@Ooccoo_Jr Totally agree. I really begrudge eating out at the moment. So many average experiences for so much money. I'd rather pay more and have something truly memorable, but less often.
I still think games are pretty low cost for a hobby compared to most other things. And there are cheaper ways to do it if you want. PS+, Game Pass, Game rental services, second hand... or just wait, games drop in price pretty quickly, well physical usually does anyway.
@AverageGamer This will be $80 on Steam so I’m pretty sure you won’t be getting a key for $60. Also, physical copies on console will have basically the same discount through retail discount.
I will either get it below 20 dollars or it's going to be given away to the service by then. No rush
Has Sony raised the price of the first party games to $80? I thought that was just Nintendo.
No rush at all. I will get it when it drops in price. Plus, all the bugs going to be patched & further optimization to the PS5 Pro version.
If I were interested in The Outer Worlds 2 (I'm not), I wouldn't even consider paying $80 for it unless it was some kind of Ultimate Edition that included all future DLC for the game. $80 for the base game is laughable.
Absolutely no way Temu Fallout is worth that
I don't blame Microsoft for this. They're putting it on gamepass, they're bringing it to other consoles day 1 but the consequence of that is you have to pay top whack. I think that's fair. Nobody is forcing anybody to buy it, just don't buy it at launch and wait for the inevitable price drop 6-12 months later, waiting that like would only be similar to a timed exclusive release anyway like say Indiana Jones.
Waiting for a deep sale, only Xbox game that’ll get $80 from me at this point is ES6.
Aren't most games 70 quid already though? I play mainly indies etc so not 100% but thought they went to 70 ages back lol
@StrickenBiged that's me too , I buy maybe one or two games a year , just can't keep up with backlog of free ps+ titles. Game about 4 hours a week .
I can wait for a sale. $80 for an AAA game, I can kinda get it even if I don’t like it…but for this?! What the hell are they smoking?!
@pyrrhic_victory Not yet. Speculation is they will after Yotei.
Removed - disrespecting others
@ChrisDeku I haven’t bought a game on launch day through Steam in 8+ years. Even the original The Outer World I purchased for $40 on launch. Meh. Who cares about physical. That a dying space and most of the sales will be digital like it has been for every major release for the last several years. Plus there a rumor that The Outer Worlds 2 will be a code in box… so that just gonna push people to buy digitally anyway.
So spending 1000 on an iPhone is easy and spending 80 on a game is difficult, why?
£70 is a price i'm used too now so i shell pay as its no different then paying £80 for the DE of Death Stranding 2.
So its €80 for a launcher on a disc go eat a D### Microsoft.
@AverageGamer Dont worry i can buy it in a few years on a big big discount and if its a voucher then they can shove it where the sun dont shine.
@Bluemoon2008 Why is that fair? They you not buy anything from MS on full price.
@themightyant I rather spend it on indies and going to eat out to remember to be fair its not like its a Final Fantasy 7
Looks like Indiana Jones will be the last xbox first party game I every buy 😡
@ChrisDeku GOOD
I couldn't care less about the $80 version. I'm going for the $100 version xD
Probably is a flop, games only last 20-30 hours, expects it to sell for £70/$80 , not a snowballs chance in hell. I'd probably only buy for a 50-60 game minimum. The few exceptions probably the trails series, as i buy the limited edition gor about 90 but that's one a year. Or like assassin creed games as the last few have been lengthy 100 hours +, the yakuza games and persona games- P5 royal took over 200 hours to platinum it . I've hardly bought any games in the last 6 months as games have been focused on graphics only lasting sbout 20 hours. Certainly not worth that pricetag
@Fiendish-Beaver i mean is it the first? I seem to recall that new star wars game being like 69.99-79.99 for the standard
@Flaming_Kaiser it's fair because that's the price of having Xbox games on Playstation day 1. They ultimately want you on xbox/gamepass so its either enticing you to them or youre paying a premium to help fund their platform.
Whether you choose to pay it is upto you. Personally, despite playing as much if not more than ever, I've bought just 2 games on release this decade. With the market flooded with quality games and not enough time to play everything, there's really no need to buy anything on release for full price nowadays, buying day 1 is essentially just another form of early access that you're paying 50% extra for.
@MasterVGuides Given Microsoft's history of not putting anywhere near the full game on a disc, I wouldn't hold my breath that the disc will be nothing more than a coaster like Indiana Jones and Doom are.
I liked the first game well enough to get the sequel, but it would take a really special game to get me to even consider paying $80 on day 1 for a game. I'll just wait.
I reluctantly paid £50 for AstroBot (worth it) but I rarely pay more than £20 for a game nowadays - certainly not paying £70 as my backlog is pretty ridiculous. I’ll play this Day 1 on Gamepass, which has cost me precisely nothing so far this year (Reward Points).
First game didn't impress me at all...
If I'm bored I'd play it on GP
I still need to grab Clair Obscur, and I haven't beaten Tainted Grail, both of which are $50. I love the studio and the first Outer Worlds, but I'll be waiting on a sale.
Was never going to buy it, even on sale.
Well it's the new normal sooooooo.......
Unfortunately people will have to get used to it as the only way is up for prices.
Still though I'm really looking forward to it an I'll be playing it on gamepass anyway
@Americansamurai1 until the next first party game
If you complain about $80 games AND you throw a connipiton fit over occasional frame drops, you are a jerk and should find a different hobby. One or the other, please.
Maybe is because I am older now but there is only 1 maybe 2 games a year I buy at launch. I have two much to play and in a year most of them are already half the price they were at launch.
And I can only think of 2 or 3 games in the last 3 years that I played enough to feel if I paid $80 I got my money worth. And Outer Worlds 2 is not going to be that type of game. Games are launching unfinished, bugs and tech issues. My buddy got that Grail game and the screen tearing is so bad he gets headaches playing it. Not a full price game mind you but still.
If it doesn't sell well, don't blame the devs, xbox.
I weren't going to buy this game anyway, but I don't buy any games above £50. Unless it's an RGG Studio game, coz I gotta support them. Hopefully they won't go above £50.
First Outer Worlds is so boring and dull. It cures insomnia in some cases. Sequel will be on emergency sale after 2 months. Obsidian will be closed in year or 2.
@ATaco finally somebody gets it
Im just gonna play it on gamepass 🤷
IDK, I'm interested in this specific game (loved the first game, played the original version on the PS4, replayed it as the Spacer's Choice Edition on the PS5), and since I'm interested, I don't feel like EUR 80 (in my region) is someting outrageous. Inflation has been rampant recently, there's no way around increased prices. MS is saying that in our faces: you want more value, you buy an Xbox/PC and a gamepass. And there are also sales, of course. FOMO guys like me always pay more - that's life.
Sadly, Obsidian will probably have to brace themselves for layoffs soon after this is released as I don't think they'll earn enough in revenue to break-even on release.
Let's hope Microsoft will absorb the potential losses on release and not carry out any layoffs as I don't think many people are going to buy this game at such a high price.
I have paid £70 for video games precisely twice: Tears of the Kingdom and FFVII: Rebirth.
Likewise, I've paid £60 for two games: Baldurs Gate 3 and AstroBot.
These games offered exceptional quality and exceptional value for their price point and apart from AstroBot, I didn't begrudge the price I paid.
The problem with most AAA games is that they don't offer both of those so asking a quarter of the price of the console itself doesn't cut it.
If you want to charge luxury prices then you need to supply a luxury product. Glitchy, bug-ridden messes with lots to do, highly polished games I can complete in a weekend with no incentive to return (we used to call these rentals in years gone by.) or polished games bulked out with an overabundance of repetitive filler (looking at you Ubisoft.) just don't cut it.
I'm happy paying £30-35 for janky but fun or polished but short.
I will reluctantly pay £35-50 if they are especially entertaining.
Asking anything more than that and you need to be offering the absolute creme de le creme of interactive video game experiences that I'm going to remember my time with for years to come.
And nothing Microsoft are knocking out comes even close to that.
At least it's possible to play it on ps5. I'll get it on a sale eventually.
Im not sure what their strategy is here. Microsoft is tapping into the Playstation market with twice as many potential customers than their own console, then pricing their games at a level that completely turns them off. If Doom flopped, what hope does this have? Is it just to make gamepass look good? The sad thing is, Obsidian will take the heat for it.
They can definetly keep the game to themselves.
I would be curious to see how it lands with the mass market. I can imagine most, like me will play this on Game Pass across PC/Xbox systems. You could do a "is Fifa bad" poll and most would vote yes on here, yet it still sells millions at the $90-100 price point.
The game itself could be a AAA game, but due to the first gam,e the perception is among us hardcore gamers is that its going to be more of an AA game. I feel like MS was aware of this, but wanted to cover their backs with the US economy being unstable. When Sony does release its next AAA game (hard to know when) it will be $80 and £80 because, unlike MS they like to keep price parity via charging its large UK market more to cover cost.
For me personally ‘the outer worldd’ was overated. So a sequal isn’t a must buy. With a €80 pricetag it is defenatly a no no.
It's funny that as the digital uptake becomes the norm there's this sudden requirement for games to go up in price... Of course, monopolies are generally frowned upon, if your government is any good...
I really enjoyed the first game and the DLC when it dropped in psn+ a while back... I'll just wait for this to do the same... I'll be busy with Helldivers 2 until Arc Raiders releases anyway 🤘
I dont really understand what Microsoft are thinking. Their entire thing is gamepass.
So you'd think to balance it out sell the game al la carte at a slightly lower price to entice people to buy. Instead of grabbing a discounted couple of months of game pass.
It just doesnt make sense, they literally have caused there own destruction.
Give it a few months, it'll likely be under half that price in second hand shops, and will almost certainly have appeared in some sort of sale on PSN
There’s an article about a dev studio going through layoffs about every 3 days…
I get it guys, this game isn’t worth $80, but it likely is what’s needed to keep the developer afloat, regardless of how sub-AAA it seems. Guess they should’ve added some BS digital artbook and then the $80 would be viable??
Anyway, the Days Gone dev did a great job with their PS5Pro upgra——whoops, they just cut 30% of their staff….
I liked the original but I have some strong doubts about the sequel and at $80 there's no way I am going to rush into buying it.
@KnightRider1982 A Phone is a life line and its used for every the whole day.
@Flaming_Kaiser Then why bother complaining that gaming is expensive?
@KnightRider1982 A Phone is essemtial now a game is not. I need my Phone for daily use.
