Started Alan Wake 2 last night and it is predictably excellent. I love how they've really tied all of the mechanics and Lore items into the gameplay and narrative.
Pre-ordered this months ago. I drink Remedy's Kool-aid and I had a great feeling about this. I've basically watched nothing and read nothing other than a couple of reviews. I also replayed AW1 this past week and am doing the Control DLC finally.
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk I haven't but I was planning on it. I actually downloaded the Ultimate Edition thinking I could import my PS4 data but since that's not the case I'll have to dig up my PS4 Control disc.
I actually tried playing them a year or so back and I was getting wrecked! I had totally forgot how to play and was being destroyed.
Got it pre-ordered and replaying Remastered in advance. I'm pretty hype, but honestly this has been a year I've been hyped a few times already (SF6, Sea of Stars, Baldur's Gate).
Seems wild to hold off on buying due to free DLC. Remedy has never shipped an incomplete game.
I've always thought it was coming since the PS4 version never got a PS5 performance patch, to my knowledge. Add on the success of the show and the brand obviously being as big as it's been.
I'm not interested though. The PS4 game already looks stunning and better than most native current gen games. I've got to get back to my Platinum run sometime though
I'll play it next year on sale. The first two are quality games but I was done with both long before I actually finished playing them.
Given Insomniac's track record I don't expect 2 to be particularly innovative and I'm also assuming they dropped MJ missions, which I actually really enjoyed - I know I'm in the minority on this one.
I got a beta key for Hyenas and tbh when it was announced I was vaguely interested, but when it came time to install it I just couldn't muster any enthusiasm for anogher MP shooter.
I think it's wild they cut bait on it prior to release, but it's probably the wisest move - as mentioned they'd still have to invest in it once it went live.
I think my biggest concern is whether this was in fact one of their "super games". There had been rumors they were working on live service Crazy Taxi and/or Jet Set Radio games, and frankly I think both of those games could be interesting in that space, IF handled appropriately - certainly no given since Sega doesn't have a single studio with live service chops.
This sucks if accurate, and if it's mainly due to Bungie's assessment, ugh. Destiny is what it is, but I don't think Bungie necessarily has the live service secret sauce. Destiny is more or iless mpenetrable now, and that's how I feel having played the og for a bit.
I'll probably finish up Unpacking. I think it's a beautiful little game, not without issues, but I'm really enjoying it. If I have more time I may play some Solar Ash, which I finally bought on sale last week. It hasn't totally grabbed me yet but Heart Machine is a favorite so I'm going to keep playing.
Ugh, that trailer looked totally insane, in a good way.
I haven't been able to get into a Yakuza game since finishing 2. I played a fair amount of 3 and started Zero but always lose interest. Maybe I'll give Like a Dragon a shot.
OK, so I guess I have a very different takeaway than everyone else. This isn't especially shocking to read or even "sobering" as the writer puts it. Microsoft is a huge corporation that is used to dominating its marketplace and becoming a monopoly (Windows). But let's look at it this way, who wouldn't want to buy Nintendo? I can tell you Sony would love to buy them too.
When Phil is saying that Nintendo is not seeing that their future isn't on their own hardware he is imagining a world where people are not complaining that the Switch launched with specs that were horribly outdated - look at Mortal Kombat 1 on Switch.
I've seen comments that Nintendo doesn't need Microsoft since their games sell insanely well, and sure, but that is not the point. The point is if Smash Bros. was on Series S/X would it not still sell 30m copies? Maybe not because of Game Pass, but it would still be a juggernaut that would put Xbox's in homes, including Japanese ones. Maybe it would also have a robust online component!
Phil sees a future where Nintendo is no longer hamstrung by "inferior" hardware. Imagine a world where Nintendo didn't have to worry about dated specs? Even the gaming community buys into this! How many articles are there complaining about their specs and how it's so challenging for 3rd parties. Nintendo doesn't need better specs or even want them. By not clawing at realistic graphics they save themselves millions of dollars and years of development time. This allows them to continue a stream of high quality first and second party games. Cheaper and quicker games equals more profit, especially with their stinginess with sales.
Nintendo was very wise with the Wii to veer left when Sony and Microsoft continued on their path. But both of the latter will always covet them. If either of them succeeded the other would be toast.
This looks pretty rad. I never love Vanillaware games, I always think the gameplay isn't quite there for me, but a tactical RPG seems like a great fit for them to me. I'm definitely interested in this.
An interesting selection. I'll give 13 Sentinels, Unpacking and Cloudpunk a shot. Odin Sphere is a neat game too but I couldn't get into it back on PS2. Does the remake have any QOL stuff?
NieR Replicant is appealing too, but I own that already. Just haven't gotten around to it.
Haven't started yet, waiting to jump into a co-op campaign with my friend. I've never played a BG game before but she has, and we played Original Sin 1 and 2 in co-op.
I'm 16 hours in and enjoying it thoroughly. I think sometimes I wish the writing was a bit more nuanced, but it captures that sort of plucky coming of age JRPG we all remember.
I'll be curious to see how I feel once I've finished it, but I think this is a close second to Cosmic Star Heroine for me on indie JRPGs - I might check out Chained Echoes next.
As for DLC I would certainly have a look. I adore The Messenger, and it had excellent DLC. I'm all aboard team Sabotage at this point.
I'm not surprised by this closure, but it's sad none the less. I agree with the comments that they were stuck in the past though. I haven't tried SR Reboot, but Agents of Mayhem was a painfully mediocre game. I bought it for $5 out of a Redbox kiosk because my friend worked on it and I played it for maybe 30 minutes and found it to be really dull.
I liked Red Faction: Armageddon and I played through SR3, but frankly they never made a game I loved. I always thought they were a solid B developer.
Also, for people talking about Gat Out of Hell, according to my friend that was mostly High Voltage Games and not Volition's work.
I know this is a click bait headline but Saint's Row is a big game for Essential. This is exactly the kind of game I want out of this tier.
Beyond that you cannot judge PS Plus' September until the Extra and Premium games are revealed.
I think the price hike socks, but I also think it's silly to expect a corporation to actually add something at a price hike. Everyone is trying to be Netflix for games and Netflix sure as hell doesn't give you anything new or better when they raise prices.
That's a pretty drastic price hike across the board. I don't imagine them announcing any sort of added benefit, although maybe they will have more day one releases like Sea of Stars.
But honestly, I don't think Extra is a bad value, even at $135/year. It's like $11/month for 20+ games. I usually only play 3 of them, but I'm willing to spend $3.66/month for those games.
Frankly, I imagine this is a reaction to them seeing a plateau of subscribers. This model only works with high revenue to get new games on the service, ie. throw money at publishers for their libraries and indies need are willing to take less for stability.
I'm glad I bought another year during the last sale though. This is definitely how they get you. I really have enjoyed Extra over the last year and I would never have tried it at $135/year, but I got it initially on sale and was only upgrading from Essential so it was like $30 or something. I'd be hard pressed to drop it now. It's nice to have a few games I've meant to play but would likely never buy show up every 30 days.
By not supporting Sega and Atlus you're making it more likely they will be acquired. Game Pass is basically free money for Sega since most of Atlus' audience is on PlayStation and Switch. This is a great deal for Sega to expose Xbox players to their titles that wouldn't otherwise buy them. It's the same thing they did with Yakuza/Like a Dragon and that's really helped that series' Western popularity.
On topic, I'm tentatively interested in this. I love tactical RPGs but I am also kind of tired of the P5 world. I never finished Strikers, but that's mostly due to the repetitive gameplay and greatly simplified social gameplay.
I think it's a cool device, but if I'm buying a portable device I want it to be a legit portable device, rather than a mirroring device. Like for a little bit more you might as well get a Steam Deck.
I think this game might be a pass for me. I love P3 but the fact it's based off the vanilla version AND $70... I think it's a no thanks.
The graphics look slick, but I think the slicker Persona's graphics become the more apparent how dated the animations are, which are only sort of covered up by portraits during conversations.
I'll also echo other people, I just want a Persona 6 at this point. Tactica is also not getting me super excited. Or, actually, I'll wait for their other fantasy game, whose name has escaped me.
@Olmaz I see where you're coming from, but I guess I slightly disagree. I think by dressing and stylizing these characters a certain way they are telling you what they are not, not what they are, which are slightly different things. What they aren't is your stereotypical vg protagonist. But we don't know who these characters are, you can't know if they're relatable or not from a 2 minute trailer.
I also think game devs use worn tropes because they often do not have enough time to give you everyone's backstory. Realistically the game will have a couple hours of story content sandwiched between gameplay. It's a limitation on the medium and likely their game design as an action/adventure game.
@Olmaz I don't think it's that hard to relate to these characters. I've played as more heterosexual white dudes then I can count - I am one of those. I would rather play as characters with different life experiences as my own.

Remedy for life.
Re: Poll: Are You Playing Alan Wake 2?
Sitting on my hard drive. Likely jumping in tonight, unless I show some modicum of restraint and finish Control DLC first.
Re: Alan Wake 2 (PS5) - A Nightmare We Never Want to Wake Up From
Pre-ordered this months ago. I drink Remedy's Kool-aid and I had a great feeling about this. I've basically watched nothing and read nothing other than a couple of reviews. I also replayed AW1 this past week and am doing the Control DLC finally.
Basically, I am beyond hype.
Re: Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater Is Going to Look Unreal on PS5
It looks shiny, but this just makes me think this is a 2025 game.
Re: Previously Teased, System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition Confirmed for PS5
I'm interested in both this and the remake. I tried SS2 once when I was younger and it was terrifying. I gave up pretty quickly.
Re: PlayStation Allegedly Under Pressure to Make Major Gaming Acquisitions
I don't think Sony can afford Take 2, and there's no way regulators would allow them to buy it AND make GTA PlayStation exclusive.
I'm not sure there's another entity that "moves the needle" like buying Activision Blizzard.
Re: It's Probably Too Late for You to Play These 16 PS Plus Games
Shoot, also been meaning to play The Quarry. Oh well, I'll get my Halloween fix with my back to back Alan Wake playthroughs.
Re: Tekken 8's Single-Player Arcade Quest Looks Weird and Wonderful in 16 Mins of Gameplay
Yah, I was going to say this looks like an enhanced version of VF4: Evo's Quest mode, which is my favorite single player fg mode ever.
I'll also second all the comments about the art direction though. Maybe let people play as Chibi Tekken characters instead?
Re: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (PS5) - A Familiar But Fantastic Superhero Sequel
Hell yeah, MJ confirmed.

I'm plaything through Alan Wake Remastered in preparation for Alan Wake II. Might try and finally play the Control DLC in between.
Re: 8 PS Plus Extra Games for October Leaked Early
Not a bad list but nothing for me. Disco is great, I just already have it on PC.

Big fan of the first two games, so I'm happy to see the series continue.

I'd but it if I didn't already own it.

2 games I was curious about that I would never have bought. This is exactly what I want out of Plus.
Re: PS Plus Extra Game for November Revealed Super Early
Cool, might try it out. Otherwise would skip entirely.
Re: First-Party Firesprite's Dark PS5 Horror Could Be Due in 2025

Re: Looter Shooter Sequel The Division 3 Casually Confirmed by Ubisoft
I enjoyed the first one but frankly barely touched 2. I thought it came out too quickly and wasn't really different enough to me.
Re: Dragon's Dogma 2 Headlines Capcom's Live Presentation at TGS
I'll watch the SF6 update after the fact. Excited for AKI's release coming up soon.

Re: Super Popular Kids Show Bluey Gets Its Own PS5, PS4 Game In November
I love Bluey. Honestly, my wife and I enjoy it more than our son.
I'm down for a Bluey video game, but I'm not sure this is the one. It looks really rudimentary?
Re: PSN Is Apparently Causing Baldur's Gate 3 Crashes on PS5
@Kiefer-Sutherland This was my issue last night too.
I actually was having issues playing a bunch of games online with a friend, we tried Far Cry 6 and The Ascent too.

Re: Preview: Persona 5 Tactica Is Shaping Up to Be More Than Just a Tired Strategy Spin-Off
By not supporting Sega and Atlus you're making it more likely they will be acquired.
I'll wait for reviews.

Re: Persona 3 Reload Release Date Is 2nd February, Pray Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Isn't Around There Too
I think this game might be a pass for me. I love P3 but the fact it's based off the vanilla version AND $70... I think it's a no thanks.
The graphics look slick, but I think the slicker Persona's graphics become the more apparent how dated the animations are, which are only sort of covered up by portraits during conversations.

@Olmaz I don't think it's that hard to relate to these characters. I've played as more heterosexual white dudes then I can count - I am one of those. I would rather play as characters with different life experiences as my own.
Re: Dustborn's Weaponised Words Hit Home on PS5, PS4 in Early 2024
@Olmaz I'm curious how these characters aren't relatable? Sure the found family of misfits is a trope at this point, but 90% of vg characters are worn archetypes.
I have no memory of this game ever being announced but I'm curious about it. I will say one thing not working for me is the animation. As a story heavy game you need expressive faces, etc. and at least in the trailer there's minimal facial work selling the dialogue. It's worse since the models are somewhat realistically proportioned, despite being a little stylized.
