Re: Strategy Legend Jake Solomon Explains Where Marvel's Midnight Suns Went Wrong

RudeAnimat0r

I'm playing this currently and love it, despite its flaws. I think the idea of deck building and cards does not have "mass appeal", I'll be honest I didn't follow the trailers and such after I heard it was that. But beyond that, I just don't think this is a game that was easy to explain or market, nor was basing a game around a Marvel B-team a great idea. I like Marvel, generally, but had no idea what a Midnight Sun was.

It's a bummer it flopped. I think there's a really solid core. It's been a fun ride.

Re: Rumour: Ubisoft Is Going All-In on Assassin's Creed with Black Flag Remake, Another Remake, Co-op Multiplayer Games, and More

RudeAnimat0r

As a casual Assassin's Creed fan I already feel like there are too many titles, so this doesn't do much for me. I've played 1, 2 and Odyssey. One of these games evert several years is more than enough for me.

I'm a little interested in Red, but with GoT and RotR around a feudal Japan open world game is no longer the novelty everyone wanted 10-15 years ago.

Re: Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, More Closed in Brutal Bethesda Restructure

RudeAnimat0r

Losing Tango and Arkane Austin is a major bummer. This is just another sign that major publishers see no market for these sub-AAAA titles. Redfall had to have done Arkane in, and I'd say it never felt like Ghostwire found an audience - plus it was included in both Game Pass and Plus.

Everyone is tightening their belts and doubling down on only the biggest franchises. It's sad.

Re: Sony Doubles Down on Helldivers 2 PSN Requirement by Taking It Off Sale for PC in Numerous Countries

RudeAnimat0r

Sony really toasted this game and community. I get it, in an entirely cold, detached sort of capitalism prevails kind of way, but this is just the worst possible way to have handled this situation.

The player's reactions are both justified and completely predictable. The idea that most players were actually aware they would need a PSN account is laughable. It's like assuming players read the EULAs when you install a new game - I literally have no idea what I am agreeing to.

And people saying players need to grow up and take the 5 minutes, this is like if you bought a PS5 game and then needed a Ubisoft account to play something. Would I do it? Probably, but I'll moan about it the whole time.

Re: Helldivers 2 PC Is Getting Review Bombed Over PSN Requirement

RudeAnimat0r

I think this is really unfortunate for the devs and the game. Helldivers has easily been the feel good gaming story of the year and this reaction is entirely predictable. Sony really dropped the ball here and this snafu will likely have major consequences for their live service business on PC going forward.

Re: Returnal Artbook and Graphic Novel Mark PS5 Game's Third Anniversary

RudeAnimat0r

Not sure why everyone is so miffed by them teasing the announcement yesterday. If you really thought they were going to announce a new game, well, that's on you.

I'm kind of interested in the artbook. I might have been interested in the comic, but it sounds like it's just the story of the game? I also really loathe animated trailers for comics. It's impossible to see what the actual book will look like and it's just not reflective of what you're buying.

Re: Returnal Studio Housemarque Teases News for Tomorrow

RudeAnimat0r

Will jump in to lump on more praise. Returnal is easily my favorite first party game this generation and one the best games I've played on PS5.

I'm not interested in a VR mode, but I'm sure it would be neat for those with the hardware.

Hopefully we'll hear about their next project in due course.

Re: $130 Version of Star Wars Outlaws Under Fire as Ubisoft Prices Increase

RudeAnimat0r

My thoughts are it's a ton of money, but also, why would anyone pre-order an Ultimate Edition!? I'm not big on buying games that aren't even out yet to begin with, but then dropping another $60 on cosmetics and a Season Pass we know almost nothing about? It's just crazy to me.

Ubisoft will do this because they know some people will bite right now, especially since it's Star Wars. They also know most people won't bite at this price point, but, when the inevitable sales come they'll still be able to sell it all at a premium from starting at a higher MSRP.

Only season pass I'll ever buy in advance is for a fighting game, because, I want all the characters.

Re: $70 Games Are Just a Phase, Believes Saber Interactive CEO

RudeAnimat0r

I mean, I think he's right that there might be some course correction on certain developers, realizing the cannot risk making AAA games anymore. However, I don't see these AA costing a whole lot less. Don't Nod considers themselves AA and Banishers is $60 - not commenting on whether that is a good price for it or not.

But there is no way $70, or whatever the premium price point is is going away. I can't see $80 until the next generation, but it's certainly possible. Development costs more and the same audience buys the game.

Re: Poll: Are You Happy with Your PS Plus Essential Games for April 2024?

RudeAnimat0r

Probably skip all of these. I think Immortals is a nice type of game to throw on Plus, but it looks so generic to me, I have literally no interest in it at all.

I'm not into Minecraft at all, so a spinoff of that is meh.

Skul looks kind of neat and has good reviews, but I still haven't finished Rogue Legacy 2, so I just don't think I want another platforming rogue-lite to play.

Re: Reminder: You're Losing Access to 7 Great PS Plus Extra Games Tomorrow

RudeAnimat0r

Got the Haven platinum over the weekend. Absolutely adored it, was a very refreshing experience.

I also got the Ghostwite platinum a while back. I thought it was a pretty cool game that has a bit too much open world bloat, or needed a little more variety in activities.

Played some Tchia and Outer Wilds too. Both seemed really cool but neither totally hooked me.

Re: Warner Bros' Reaction to Suicide Squad Flop Will Make You Question Your Sanity

RudeAnimat0r

No, it's not surprising. If there's an IP that seems well suited for live service it's definitely something like HP. Built in seasons of school years, houses to sort players into, etc.

Whether they can make that game, and make it well is a major question, but there is clear potential.

When examining Suicide Squad, I think it's hard to judge it. It doesn't seem like a good fit for live service to begin with. Nor was Rocksteady necessarily the right studio.

Re: Reaction: The Problem with PlayStation Right Now

RudeAnimat0r

There isn't an easy answer, but it's clear the answer wasn't to double down on 40 hour AAAA prestige games. The market for these titles are only so large - GTA excluded - and you can only sell them for so much.

The answer also certainly doesn't seem to be live service games, as we've now seen Sony cancel multiple titles that were never even officially shown. And the titles that have been announced don't have gameplay and the audience reception is already looking pretty apathetic.

I know first-party indie style experiences do no sell consoles, but I think there is a market and an appetite for shorter AAA games. Miles Morales did use recycled assets, but it was also just a tighter experience overall.

I think the obsession with flashier graphics and reigning in the scope of these games is where to start. I mean, it's wild to think, but the PS5 is in its fourth year and there are still multiple first-party teams that haven't released an original game this generation. I know making games is hard, super hard, but we don't even have games officially announced from Naughty Dog, Bend, Sucker Punch, Media Molecule.

I think this is where we look at Nintendo. I know they have their secret IP sauce, but it's highly unlikely their flagship titles, a Mario Odyssey for example, is costing hundreds of millions of dollars to produce.
