Re: SEGA to Announce New RPG at Tokyo Game Show, Persona Dev Atlus Also Features

CynicalGamer

My friends, most of whom are restricted to playstation, refuse to buy Sega games until the TGS ends as they suspect an acquisition announcement. Honestly I wish platforms would somehow pay for the right to have a game series on their platform (that they did not have before) rather than outright exclusivity. May be a pipe dream though. Oh well.

Edit: I think Persona 6 will get a weird teaser first (like persona 5) rather than an announcement

Re: The Noticeable Absentees from PlayStation Showcase 2021

CynicalGamer

Naughty Dog released a big game last year. Them being absent isn't a big deal really. Patience is a virtue. Not sure why new COD needed to be shown at this show? Not a negative in my book. Looks like we can expect 3-4 high quality first party games next year on top of the first party games we already got since since launch. Xbox will be playing catch up in 2023. Maybe Kena will be good this year as well? Stray too? And let's be honest, if Hogwarts game was shown, it would be discarded as a third party game. Playstation has a healthy dose of first party and third party.

Re: Soapbox: After a Year of Silence, Today's PlayStation Showcase Can't Afford Dead Air

CynicalGamer

@Flaming_Kaiser Agree on games. Which is why Sony already has solid exclusives this gen. Now the third party games will take over for a few months and then Sony will have more exclusives ready for us. Once PS5 stock stabilises, that is when Sony will start firing on all cylinders on exclusive front. In the short term, they are going to sell out their consoles anyway given supply issues and demand. So makes sense to keep more games on hold for marketing purposes as that's when the console race begins in my opinion.

Re: Soapbox: After a Year of Silence, Today's PlayStation Showcase Can't Afford Dead Air

CynicalGamer

@Flaming_Kaiser Fair enough. I however believe third party is just as important. (E.g. Elden Ring) Most people play more third party than first party on consoles in my opinion. First party enthusiasts are a vocal minority really. PS5 versions for first party and third party is stacked for the time being on PS5. For shiny stuff, I have PC. Most playstation gamers aren't forking out for a pc so they are happy with a console with lots of third party games.

Re: Talking Point: Did PlayStation Showcase 2021 Deliver on the Hype?

CynicalGamer

I think it was decent. Cringed at Deathloop though. Not too fussed about new games for this year. Enough third party games all the way until Horizon. As for true PS5 exclusives, it is simply not financially worth releasing too many of those atm. Games with PS5 versions is good enough for now. Unless you think PS4 sucked. Because it started with less games. At least we saw some future games.

Re: Soapbox: After a Year of Silence, Today's PlayStation Showcase Can't Afford Dead Air

CynicalGamer

Most people don't buy playstation consoles to play exclusives. They buy it to play games in general. Therefore third party games alone are enough to sell the console to the majority of console gamers. So let's not oversell the importance of this event for Sony.

That being said, I would be very disappointed if they don't deliver some semblance of the future of games from Sony as their games are high quality. Hard to plan vacation, etc around games if their big hitters are silent for a long time. But that is more a problem for me than in gamers in general, I would imagine.

Re: Feature: Our PS5, PS4 Predictions for PlayStation Showcase 2021

CynicalGamer

Realistic: Teaser for GOW. Gameplay for GT 7. One brand new IP (maybe from Studio Bend as they must be confident if Days Gone sequel was canned)

Unrealistic: Killzone or Resistance. Imagine they countered Halo with one of these.

Don't show me: Deathloop (I know it's coming). Kena (I know it's coming). More Directors cuts. (Let's dial that down and get new IPs)

Edit: I'm keeping expectations low. Kratos taught me well.

Re: Soapbox: I Don't Know How to Feel About This PS4-to-PS5 Upgrade Uproar

CynicalGamer

@SilkySmile89 Regarding architecture, I dont think you understand how testing architecture works. Ps4 was using generic engine code. The pipelines have changed for PS5 to leverage it better. They could have stuck to generic engine code. But these new pipelines will lead to more effiecient coding workflows eventually but Devs still need to master this. And yes the SSD needs additional coding given that accessing memory advantages needed this. Not all games use it but some do and that matters.

Re: Soapbox: I Don't Know How to Feel About This PS4-to-PS5 Upgrade Uproar

CynicalGamer

@SilkySmile89 Please note the first part of my post where I imply Sony is being arrogant somewhat. I just think it overblown.

As consoles become more like computers, Microsoft is in their home territory. Sony needs to catch up there still. They have to pay to bridge that gap.

Also Microsoft can afford to take a loss on gamepass and have their games on pc, xbox, etc. It's a much bigger risk for Sony given they need to sell their consoles as well and don't have the financial cushion that Xbox does. Their only alternative was a partnership with the likes of Google, Amazon, etc to counter Gamepass. So yeah we are possibly paying for ps4 limitations. Putting all their games on pc will affect them negatively and lead to more people to not get a PS5. It is what it is.

Re: Soapbox: I Don't Know How to Feel About This PS4-to-PS5 Upgrade Uproar

CynicalGamer

Sony can afford to be arrogant atm, Xbox cannot. If the roles are reversed you will eventually get the same arrogance again. At the end of the day I really only care about the games. Sony's delivered so far, Xbox still needs to. Until then, I'll be gaming more on PlayStation. I'll be happier when both Xbox and playstation have high quality games on offer.

As for prices, you can't compare free upgrades from a third party developer to that of an in-house Dev. There are more long term quarterly financial variables to consider as part of a massive corporate structure. There's a reason big corporate companies have more complex performance ratings than start ups as an example...

I can assure you that these free upgrades are a lot more work than people think. Even changing a word in a cutscene script can bring game breaking bugs. I do think it's a bit unrealistic to expect people to pay twice for a game but I don't know if $10 upgrades are that big a deal. Also why are people comparing cross gen upgrades to GPU upgrades. The infrastructure differences of the PS4 and PS5 is not comparable to different graphic cards.

Re: Sony Will Make You Pay Extra to Upgrade Horizon Forbidden West from PS4 to PS5

CynicalGamer

Reality is that Sony are the frontrunners. Playstation gamers' backlog alone (with performance boost) is better than upcoming Xbox games imo. You can't really blame Sony if their data indicates people are willing to spend a premium. Microsoft would do the same but they simply don't have the stature of Sony atm even with Gamepass. If xbox manage to deliver a series of high quality games, they may be able to pressure Sony eventually. Sony's exclusives are simply a more valuable commodity atm. It's not a case of one company been nicer. It's a case of one having the edge in games currently. Either way I hope they become full fledged rivals again rather than reversal to Xbox dominance as that's when the customer wins more often.

Re: PS Plus September 2021 PS5, PS4 Games Announced

CynicalGamer

One thing to bear in mind is that this is an enthusiast-centric website. The vast majority of playstation gamers have enough in their backlog to keep them occupied. The vast majority also mostly use ps plus to play online. If you ask the majority of playstation gamers you meet on the street what they think about ps plus freebies or playstation exclusives, they won't really care. Websites like this do however give enthusiasts a unified voice which I appreciate. I personally only use ps plus to play online with exceptions like Control Ultimate.

Re: PS Store Essential Picks Sale Houses Many PS5, PS4 Game Deals

CynicalGamer

Since physical Vs digital is a topic here. The main value for me with physical games is that as soon as I'm done they get stored as an ornament. I've done this for multiple generations. Looking at my shelves always brings back fond memories, especially when I have my older fiends visiting. Don't get the same vibe from my digital games. But I guess thats what great about games with physical and digital options. Oh and some of my friends spend far less annually on physical games (due to trading, etc) than I spend on PS Plus, Game pass, etc.

Re: Don't Worry, Naughty Dog Will Continue Making Single Player, Story-Focused Games

CynicalGamer

There is no way every single multiplayer experience will be immensely profitable. So it will be smarter to keep up single player games. This obsession from many executives in the industry with capturing the success of other multiplayer experiences is going to cause a lot of development teams to go under. There's way more space for single player games to make a profit than there is for multiplayer.
