Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is “massive”, according to Tony Todd, the star of Candyman and voice of Venom in the PlayStation 5 exclusive. Responding to a fan on Twitter, the horror icon affirmed that he will be voicing the symbiote, and has been involved with the project for around two months now. “Game is massive,” he said. “That's why it won't come out [until] 2023.”
Given the success of the previous Marvel’s Spider-Man, and its spin-off Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, we’re expecting this to be a juggernaut of a release – Insomniac Games likely has a near-enough blank cheque for this one. To be fair, considering just how busy the developer has been, 2023 is an impressive release target for this hugely anticipated sequel.

Be our victim......we are the writing on the wall
Having only recently got a PS5 one of my first games was Spider-man Miles Morales, which if I’m completely honest I’m a bit underwhelmed with. Hope they change things up somewhat for this full-on sequel, and definitely needs to be a new location.
Now I want to know who Kraven is voiced by.
@Nightcrawler71 Really? I loved Miles Morales a lot. I do expect Spider-Man 2 to be a much bigger step forward, though.
It’s massive? Hopefully it’s not set in New York.. so sick of swinging and playing around in the same exact city.. there are better cities/places to set a game than there.. how many times can one swing to the Statue if Liberty or climb the Empire State Building or hear an npc say
“HEYO IM WALKIN HE-UH”
I understand fully that Spiderman’s story is set in New York but for Christ sakes all they are doing is copy/pasting/slightly upgrading for the game.. why can’t Spiderman go to the UK or California or something.. go swinging around Big Ben smh
Picked up Miles Morales with the remastered Spider Man on ps5 because I had never played them before. Finishing Spider Man was such a slog by the end of it, that I haven’t even installed Miles Morales. Bigger, more massive, is not the improvements I would like to see. THOROUGHLY burnt out on these open world games, I sincerely hope they switch up the formula in some big way for Wolverine. People like to heap praise on Insomniac like they’re some sort of wizards. Very talented, yes, wizards, no. A big reason for their output is because Spider Man and Miles Morales shared an awful lot of its DNA with Sunset Overdrive, and I’m worried the reason we are seeing two Insomniac trailers in one show is because Wolverine shares a lot of its DNA with Spider Man. AAA gaming just starting to feel really, really repetitive. It would suck to see Insomniac turn into the Ubisoft of Marvel games, redoing the same map and pin formula over and over and over and over again.
Spiderman and MM both had strong storylines too, so look forward to the venom narrative. Much better writing than the ***** Tom Holland films.
Miles Morales was just the right length of game for me. It was very fun but any longer and I might have lost interest. I think Insomniac did an incredible job and the RT really was great but, yea, I think they’d have to really mix things up a bit to get me to play it.
I’m so bored of superhero franchises dominating all forms of media.
I wouldn’t have expected it to be as big a challenge as the first game - they already built Manhattan. Surely they won’t start again from scratch?
I just hope you can enter buildings and switch from Peter Parker to Spiderman at will. Like how you could in the final DLC. Also a mission involving the Statue of Liberty.
@commentlife Miles Morales was so much better than the original game (which I also enjoyed).
I just want playable venom, it will be really cool to play as venom
@fR_eeBritney maybe they've added Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island? Possibly also New Jersey given how closely aligned they are with NYC
Given the number of views this trailer has on YouTube, yeah. Insomniac have a blank cheque
@Nightcrawler71 Underwhelmed? I think Miles Morales is the best Spider-Man from Insomniac to date & I only got to play it on the PS4!
After finishing Miles Morales, I actually preferred his version of Spider-Man vs Peter Parker's. 🕷🕸
I’d say it won’t be out until 2023 because they have released a ton of games these past 4 years and it takes time to release a new one.
I'll probably get a PS5 in 2023 then when this game comes out in that case. Loved the first Spiderman.
@Nightcrawler71 what you want spiderman to move because you want a new location? thats not really how spiderman works.
@NinjaWaddleDee that’s what I’m doing. All those early exclusive games (R&C, Demon’s Souls, Returnal) will be cheap as chips by then. Plus the ones coming out next year (if there are any?).
@fR_eeBritney Yep, I want Returnal as well, but I'm fine waiting for it. I play mostly on PC now, so I'm not too bothered with not having a PS5 immediately. Plus hopefully there will be a new model or a price drop by then.
spiderman was a 10 hour game with additional 20 hours of repetitive padding
I got an overwhelming feeling with Spider-Man that I was playing a game from 2009 on the 360 that had been remade beautifully with modern graphics but unchanged gameplay-wise. MM seemed the same. I loved Arkham City when it was new, but I went back to it a couple of years ago and it had aged like milk. That's how I feel playing these Spider-Man games.
Hopefully they can move past what now feels incredibly dated with Arkham combat and icon-chasing being the core of the game. It reminded me of that old South Park episode where Des Moines is basically a time capsule of the 90s; these games (plus the recent Ratchet and Clank) feel like time capsules from the late 2000s but with cutting edge graphics.
Listen I’m sure it is, but what the hell does this guy know? Was he in the planning meeting? Did they go over their project milestones with him? Why give twitter oxygen?
So Wolverine comes out in 2026? WTH?
@Spiders maybe because of the script ... The script has to have all the lines from all the actors and all the descriptions from the situations so the actors can do a good job.
@3n7r0py don't worry insomniac has 3 teams already, one who works in spider man, one who made ratchet and one who made miles, the one who did miles is developing wolverine so they have roome for one more game or maybe the ratchet team is going to help with wolverine too.
Awesome! Great info, thank you very much! 🎮👍🤓
@commentlife i don't understand this, insomniac has always made awesome games and now that they did their first two in the same location with two characters that share a lot because they happen to be basically the same character but with different story people is starting to think that they will turn in ubisoft? Dude, they are very talented, they already said wolverine will be different than spiderman both in gameplay and feeling, what else do you want from them? 😂 Also if you don't like the open world stuff you can always skip it... I have played spiderman 4 times and just did all the stuff you can do in the open world once, you don't need to play it to enjoy what insomniac did in that awesome game.
The only thing I don't like about Sony right now is that they tease games far too early. It's been almost a year since they announced GoW and now we have at least 2 years since they'll release Wolverine and new Spiderman. I it's hard to anticipate and wait for new games for that long.
But to be fair, a lot of companies do the same
@dudeAmarillo hey dude, I’m glad you really enjoyed it! They did a great job, that’s for sure. I’m more commenting on the state of AAA game development where it seems we are getting less and less variety in favour of just MORE/BIGGER versions of the same thing we just finished playing. Spider Man/Miles Morales shared a VERY similar map-and-pin game loop that their previous title did, Sunset Overdrive. Which is a very similar game loop to every major Ubisoft, Rockstar or Bethesda title of the last decade plus. If more of the same is what the majority of people want, that’s cool. It’s just not the direction I would like gaming to be heading. I’m just sick of chasing pins on a map.
@dudeAmarillo That’s a good guess! Unfortunately it just tells us there’s a lot of dialogue and.m nothing about the size and scope.
I’d be interested to see where people land — I know a lot of people preferred Mile’s tighter, more focused experience, but there’s pressure to do more when you call it ‘2’. I hope they find a good balance.
@fR_eeBritney I hope so too, unless they announce Director’s Cuts instead of price drops when all us holdouts are ready to buy haha
I'm always a bit nervous when a game gets revealed so long before release.
@ThePizzaMule Would you prefer if Sony didn't announce anything for a long time? Cos a fair few on here don't like that either.
@AdamNovice they release multiple games each year, so they always have something to talk about and show. I would honestly prefer if they announced games around 1 year before release.
@Spiders I had somehow not considered this possibility yet. Here's to hoping I can get em discounted by the time my ps5 finally arrives.
@Nightcrawler71 it’s a cool game. Gameplay wise it’s a bit repetitive after a while but overall it’s a very nice one visually and with all the characters.
Are people still angry about spidermans face? I don't follow comics or these games but recall an outcry
Tbh I’d be more excited if I could actually play AS Venom. Just imagining the move set Insomniac could think up for him has me losing my sh*t.
But they got the right voice actor, that’s for sure!
@WolfyTn You basically answered your own question, and you can't really be the "friendly neighborhood Spider-Man" if you going to California or London.
Spider-Man have never been the globe trotting hero. That what the x-men, Avengers, fantastic 4... etc are for.
I can only see them adding Queens and Brooklyn cause both these borough are where Peter and Miles are from originally.
The bigger, the better where Insomniacs Spider-Man is concerned. I loved MM but it was far too short.
I'm so happy Tony Todd is Venom, its perfect casting.
@WolfyTn SM is New York so you can't really take it away. Anyway i have a feeling NY will be expanded and it won't just be Manhattan, playing Flight Sim and i never realized how massive NY is outside of Manhattan so i really think they are going to go that route.
I think spiderman was a great game but I did not finish it. I think it will have been a brilliant game to younger / newer gamers but maybe a little to by the book for some who have played a lot of games with the a similar feel. But it was well made, swinging was great for the first few hours and it was well written. Not everyone has been gaming for 2 decades and newer gamers are well served by this next gen Arkham. Its a winning formula for Sony and rightly so.
Definitely looking forward to this as I am sure they will be able to take a few more chances and add some complexity and variety to the game play loop. Venom should be epic.
@3n7r0py
2024 or 2025 more than likely.
Remember that Insomniac has two teams, and are quickly becoming Sony's biggest studio in terms of head count.
I hope this is ps5 exclusive.
This next spider man needs that graphics buff that ps4 can't handle
@Ear_wiG I would definitely be super excited if we played as Venom, I find Peter and Miles boring already but I'm most definitely in the minority. Let's see maybe insomniac has some surprises, I would settle for playing as Black cat.
I think the next generation should have just held off to post-pandemic. It's obvious development can't keep up with it.
Hopefully it is worth the wait. Hoping more than just a new maps and co-op, perhaps playable Venom and or symbiote suit with new abilities.
Narratively I am hopeful it isn't some Donny Cates Venom but classic Venom with some Kraven's Last Hunt.
@trev666 lol isn't this all open world games in general!
Understand Spiderman is based in New York but would be disappointed if the while game took place there. Perhaps some sort of multiverse thing could go on that forces changes in location - dare I say a rift in space time to allow instance traversal through the dimensions......
No rush. Take your time.
The problem with being "massive" is that things can turn stale very fast. I absolutely loved Spiderman when it first came out, but by the end of the platinum i was completely burned out by the game. The web swinging was great but everything looked too similar (as you would expect a city to look, i suppose) miles was also great but after a few hours i was getting, ive played this game before vibes. Still got the platinum on it but a massive game giving me those same vibes, dont think i could do it all a 3rd time.
Epic news if true, hopefully we do get to explore more than just New York/New York City.
@Keyblade-Dan I just recently re-watched the original Candyman film in preparation for the 2021 sequel (with the same name), it surprisingly still held up pretty well for it's time.
@Nightcrawler71 Same, but I did play Spider-Man on PS4. I think Spider-Man 2 will be impressive though since they have lots of experience with the franchise. And Wolverine ... too far away but looking forward to that one.
I'm going to call my PS5, my Insomniac 1
@KidBoruto Yeah it's legit one of the scariest and outright unsettling films I've ever watched it's amazing
@Keyblade-Dan Hopefully I have time to watch the newer film, I had planned to see it last Tuesday but something came up.
@Juanalf I definitely liked playing as Miles WAY more, but yeah, they need to change it up somehow. My guess is either there will be team-based moves, sort of like Marvel vs. Capcom, or maybe we can actively switch between the two Spidermans. Playable Venom seems like a longshot unfortunately… but we’ll see!
I think I would prefer for the game not to get bigger than the original. "Massive" just gives me Ubisoft vibes.
Removed - trolling; user is banned
Yeah NewYork is probably going to be 5 times the size of the first game and also I don't think miles is going to be playable simply because I think Symbiote suit is going to play a mass role in the story which obviously leads to Venom but they'll probably give Miles another standalone after this one
