"It doesn’t matter how much you deny it, people are going to realise that you’re a geek if you’ve got the Platinum Trophy in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Dragon Age II."
Oh crap! I've been had! xD
Anyway, this whole article made me Facepalm so hard that there's a 5 inch depression from my elbow in my bed. Ludicrous that people would even spend money on things like this. Pandering to the lowest common denominator is what this is doing.
@SunnyShores No, I know what you're saying and it's just what it looks like. Still, it's very upsetting and disappointing. I imagine that this would be another reason people would use to stereotype gamers as dysfunctional people.
@SunnyShores I shouldn't be surprised. MMOs are full of loudmouths whose lives are so empty that they have to condescend to novice players to validate their own existence, but something like this that penetrates through boundaries - ethical and possibly legal - is going too far in my opinion.
@eaglebob345 Yeah...it sure seems that way. I just don't see why Sega won't even take the risk. It makes me want to slash my wrists sometimes. No joke.
@Ginkgo The Wii U's outsold the PS4 in Japan by leaps and bounds since the Japanese developers favor it immensely. The Wii U even has the original Final Fantasy games from I to VI on the Virtual Console service as well as Koei Tecmo's historical sims, MMOs as well as Square Enix's Dragon Quest X. I swear, the Wii U would do so much better everywhere if their more sought after titles were localized to the west or at least get rid of region restrictions.
Anyway, there's only so much so many of us can assume about the Japanese consumer base. We don't live there, so therefore we can never tell what they might want or what their preferences are.
What is a common trend, however, is the lack of appeal behind the premium services like PlayStation Plus. I made a comment about this before, but they're already paying out the wazoo for their games (upwards of $100) and they don't have a used game market there, so if they want something new they'll have to buy it new every time. Add the monthly fee of PS+ on top of it and the PS4 looks like nothing more to them than a gold sink. The only games that would have any appeal to them at all would be the ones that accommodate free online play.
@Itachi This is Square Enix we're talking about. You know, the same guys who backed Thief, Murdered: Soul Suspect and the XIII trilogy? It's not at all surprising that they keep shooting themselves in the foot. SE makes the Red and Blue armies from Blood Gulch look like competent soldiers.
Jeebus Meist, this "console war" is becoming more and more ridiculous than the 2012 presidential elections. Microsoft is making Mitt Romney look like a reasonable person!
Sony's mistake was trying to market a western-oriented system to Japan. The PS4's already all the rage in the west, for all the obvious reasons (graphics, premium subscription perks, social networking features and action-oriented games). The Japanese pay an obscene amount for consumer electronics and don't have a used game market there. New games cost upwards of $100. Forcing a PS+ subscription on top of that just to play games online will alienate them. The Wii U does everything its next-gen brethren do in regards to games, but allows for many free perks that outweigh those of the PS4 and XBO. The Wii U will go on strong for quite some time until Sony decides to reform its policies.
If that whiny b*stard gets any money out of this ridiculous case, then I'd better get some of that too. Hell, EVERYONE who owns a PS4 should get money. He thinks he deserves it because he was neurotic enough to discover a slip up like that? Screw that. This is Amurica, and we deserve money for doing next to nothing for real work.
It's stupid crap like this that makes me ashamed to be an American. -_-
I don't feel all that special but at the same time I couldn't really care less. I've used my PS4 for Final Fantasy XIV and it's been much more beneficial for me since I seldom lag or get booted from the game or suddenly monsters disappear from my screen compared to the PS3 version. Not to mention the benefits of the Party chat feature. It's just made MMO gaming on a home console much more accessible. Now we just need cross-platform games between the NWU and XBO and next-gen will have truly arrived.
@Diddy_kong I remember hearing somewhere that MGS4 wasn't profitable because it was a PS3 exclusive. It's probably a move by Konami rather than Kojima to make it multi-plat. What puzzles me is why they won't put this on the Wii U as well. Nothing against the Fox Engine, but it doesn't look like it's beyond the Wii Us capabilities. After all, whatever the 360 can do: The Wii U can do much better.
I'm just hoping for GameCube titles on the Virtual Console so I can hopefully play The Twin Snakes again.
@get2sammyb Nothing like karaoke, hostess girls, guns and zombies to bring a game together eh? lol I'm hoping Sony and Nintendo can help with localization efforts. Even Xseed would be a welcome vanguard since they brought The Last Story to the west. Best Wii game I've ever played, second to Xenoblade Chronicles.
Since EA's been treating Nintendo and Sony fans like third class citizens, I refuse to buy anything tied to them anymore. That unfortunately means that I'll have to cancel my Dragon Age reservation, but if luck holds, I could get it used for $10 in two months after release.
As long as my money never reaches EA's money grubbing hands, I can sleep at night. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll just troll around on ME3 for my Wii U since it's the only next-gen console with a ME title so far. That, plus I'm still continuing my boycott of EA products that aren't available on Nintendo platforms.
...Actually, you know what? Screw it. I'll just collectively burn any EA games I come across. lol
MK8 got flak for broadcasting at 59 FPS instead of 60, so I guess someone's inclined to spread it all around. :/ Just waiting for someone to knock down Forza. lol
Nintendo updated the Wii U's firmware more often than both MS and Sony and delivered more features and stability patches each time. I'm starting to get annoyed with my PS4 crashing at inopportune times while I'm playing XIV.
To be honest, I'm not picking up much for the PS4 this year other than Destiny, Inquisition and maybe Evolve. No first-party developments pique my interest yet.
It's like someone's asking, "Who're you gonna listen to when you're gonna buy a console? Jesse Pinkman? The guy who couldn't even cut it as a drug lord? Or Mike Tyson? That one big dude that can bite your damn ear off?" No-brainer, this one. Ha ha ha.
It wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo got the jump on this and gave their fanbase everything J-related as possible on their consoles. After all, the Wii U IS getting Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third.
Still waiting for a life-like racing peripheral to play these games with. Forza's in-car set-up looks pretty accurate, but maybe add the Morpheus and it'd be as life-like as can be...err, minus the vibrating motors.
The Japanese pay an obscene amount of money for new games already, but with the lack of backwards compatibility AND the fact that their cloud service doesn't guarantee a permanent purchase of titles along with a mandatory PlayStation Plus subscription for most online multiplayer games, it's no wonder the Wii U is more appealing than the PS4 AND XBO.
...Sigh. Fail Blue Oyster Cult reference to make a joke is fail. Either way, LOVED the reboot and I'm definitely picking up this game as well...so long as Nintendo doesn't bankrupt me with Smash, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third first.
Well, looks like another reason why I should just wait for the Wii U version of this. I swear, crap like this makes me wonder why developers bother to label their games "high quality" anymore. I'd rather it works flawlessly right off the bat.
Slow and steady wins the race. Though I feel bad for Microsoft this generation, I'd rather Nintendo and Sony be the main contenders forevermore when it comes to video games.
After the "Nintendo's white PS4" fiasco at the L.A. Times during E3, the press has proven to be as useless as Bill O'Reilly at a Klan meeting. It's better if developers appeal directly to the fans. Word-of-mouth through social networks is the best way to convince new consumers to invest these days anyway.
This particular statistical focus worries me. The last thing I want is to run into a bunch of hipsters thinking graphics, mainstream third-party titles and premium services make the "best" console. The only game I've been playing hardcore on my PS4 so far is Final Fantasy XIV and that's only because I don't have to pay for party chat or to play online - save for Square Enix's subscription fee. Knack was broken, but fun. Definitely a masochistic platformer. Killzone: Shadow Fall looked too much like an Unreal game like Gears of War or Bulletstorm and was absurdly imbalanced online. As for third-party support, it's still as patchy and buggy as it was last-gen. Apparently, "good" games need to be constantly adjusted post-launch. No thanks, I'll still hop on my Wii U to play MK8, and since Bayonetta AND Bayonetta 2 are coming to the Wii U in the fall alongside Hyrule Warriors and Super Smash Bros. I may not boot the PS4 up for a few months. I'd better get the platinum trophy in XIV before then...
I'd rather Naughty Dog make a new IP every generation. Jak and Daxter didn't last past the PS2/PSP, and Crash Bandicoot didn't either...well, at least before Activision got their hands on it.
