Following a leak about the announcement, Sony has now confirmed it will be increasing the prices of PS5 consoles, as well as PS Portal.

Starting on 2nd April, 2026, the RRP on PS5, PS5 Pro, and PS Portal devices is set to go up quite significantly, due to "continued pressures in the global economic landscape".

Here are the current prices, and what they're changing to (in bold):

  • PS5: $549.99/£479.99/€549.99 > $649.99/£569.99/€649.99
  • PS5 Digital Edition: $499.99/£429.99/€499.99 > $599.99/£519.99/€599.99
  • PS5 Pro: $699.99/£699.99/€799.99 > $899.99/£789.99/€899.99
  • PS Portal: $199.99/£199.99/€219.99 > $249.99/£219.99/€249.99

"We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide," reads the PS Blog post.

For comparison's sake, at launch, the PS5 cost $499.99/£449.99/€499.99, and the Digital Edition $399.99/£359.99/€399.99.

This sort of price hiking is unprecedented within games hardware. In every other generation, the cost of a console has always gone down over time; for PS5, it's been the opposite.

As Sony mentions, the "global economic landscape" is to blame, and it can largely be boiled down to ongoing tariff-related matters in the US. RAM is now also at a premium; shortages caused by generative AI companies have driven the prices sky high.

A standard PS5 now matches the Xbox Series X price in the US, while the Nintendo Switch 2 is currently available for $449.99. Nintendo is expected to increase the price of its console as well, however.

If you were considering buying a PS5, you only have a few days left to get one at the current prices.
