That's another Gamescom Opening Night Live for the record books, as Geoff Keighley hosted a roughly two-hour show packed full of gaming news and announcements.
Some of the biggest headline reveals included Lords of the Fallen 2, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, and the brand new game Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
Other updates were a trailer and release date for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, a launch date for Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, and intense slice of Resident Evil Requiem footage.

As per usual, it was just far too long for what was actually shown. Real lack of meaningful announcements stretched across two bloody hours we'll never get back.
My expectations weren't super high, so didn't disappoint. Still, I expected worse...so rated it "poor" instead of "very poor".
About the same level as Gamescom every year.
I would rate it just okay. Most of it was just CG trailers. They didn't show much gameplay and what they did show was nothing impressive.
It was okay, I had no expectation and got the info i wanted on the few games I was interested in. Too many Souls likes and Horror games mixed in with MP and F2P drag things down.
Why do I keep doing it to myself? I go in every time thinking it couldn't be worse than last time and yet here we are.
Also half the presenting time seems to be telling us what we just saw then what we are about to see. Pretty much redundant information
Perfectly adequate. Can't say anything really blew me away, but most of the announcements were pretty solid.
I'm running out of ways to talk about this show
Adjusted my expectations accordingly, so it was just fine for me. These shows usually just focus on game updates and release dates anyway, rather than new announcements. I’ll give it an “Okay”
The games i liked: Ghost of Yotei (Legends!), Chronos, Silent Hill F, Onimusha, KCD2 Blacksmith expansion, Batman Lego, project Spectrum
SHf , GoY legends, Cronos and RE9 saved it...... should never have been 2 hours long.
Somewhere between ok and good, certainly better than I expected but there are a few games between the main show and the pre-show that I'm interested in. Just kinda weird that the pre-show was far better paced and presented
Resident Evil was the one I was looking forward to but was pretty disappointing with what they showed of it.
Highlights were
He-Man
Lego Batman
Fallout Season 2
Hours of fluff. But LEGO BATMAN
I didn't watch it live (learnt my lesson with SGF), and looking at what was shown Im glad I didn't. Hardly any new reveals, just updates on games we already know about.
Seems like Yotei and Resident Evil stole the show though.
Fallout S2 trailer was good to see, but not a game!
Unbeatable looked fun, I loved outer worlds so up for OW2, but it was a bad trailer...
that vertical rogue like thing that was like vampire survivors meets Ikari warriors looked good, but not much there for me.
oh, and lego batman, but the recent Star Wars lego was pretty unplayable for me, despite looking great, so not that excited. too old for that.
Far too long.
A lot of waffle and filler that had nothing to do with games.
Spent too long on certain games CoD for example.
Too many trailers that actually showed little. RE and black myth for instance.
Overall my expectations were low, but still didn’t clear the bar.
Just like I expected. I am not dissapointed. Gamescom is always the weakest one. SGF stream stays as the best stream from summer season for me.
Only thing that was new and kind of meaningful was LEGO Batman.
Worst part is it being 2 hours. There was maybe not even 1 hour of content there. Who the hell cares and wants that much talking!? Lame.
RE9 trailer was dissapointing as hell.
Am interested in Valor Mortis and Routine.
I mowed the lawn. Guess I could have voted didn't watch it but didn't see that option until pressing Results. Which seem about the norm. I can only watch the same guy making himself excited once a year, 3x is way too much of him.
a terrible game show..
Kinda concerning when best game shown was a Lego game. 4/10
I didn't watch and I don't even like all the games announced above.
0 from 10.
It was okay, can't complain much. Nothing got me excited in terms of new game announcements.
The only thing that got me excited isn't even a game, but rather, an anime adaptation of a game that is Sekiro No Defeat
Pretty much what a person comes to expect regarding a Gamescon. But way too much yapping.
Opening Naught Live
I turned off when they started having a lengthy chat about Monster Hunter and Final fantasy crossover DLC.
Im normally pretty upbeat about all shows. But apart from maybe 5 trailers and a great song performance, this was really really poor.
Right call to stick with plan and miss these shows then check online to what was shown.
It was pretty poor. Distinct lack of any innovation on show..
Edit: Felt so strongly I posted twice? I swear alzheimer's is kicking in
Geoff really needs to do 2 of these a year at most. Weak show, definitely some cool smaller titles and good to see Bloodlines 2 actually releasing but overall… pretty big waste of 2 hours.
It was ok.could have been better. Word up son
Too many games using (or appearing to use) UE5.
@Anti-Matter I get being a video game nerd/ fan- but I don't understand why you even leave Nintendo Life, what's the point?
@CallMeDuraSouka Tbf he's like this on NintendoLife, every article it's either about wanting kids games or saying he would rather play games on playstation.
All the best stuff was during the pre-show. Thank god I waited a bit so I could skip through all the live service sludge
Starting an event with a bloated COD trailer and then an even more bloated interview set the trend for the show. Nadir being WOW which was so utterly devoid of any actual gameplay content it encouraged me to just turn the whole event off completely.
@UltimateOtaku91 Huh.......I don't visit NL as often as the other places so I guess I never noticed.
Interesting conditions he sets for games too. Be honest, I don't get it
I had to stop watching after about 45 mins. Who has the time to watch this live only for one of the better announcements to be a LEGO game?
Batman & Ghosts Legends were highlights, rest was all a blur. Give it a C-
1. Kingdom Come Deliverance II DLC release date announcement.
2.
Random but have we heard anything new from that Dispatch game that was announced at the VGAs last year? Was kinda intrigued by that one.
Unbeatable looks really interesting. Outside that, it looks like it’s Capcom to the rescue again.
It was 10/10 to hear from Henry. He's hammering away!
@CallMeDuraSouka Antimatter bought a PS4 awhile back, he's been playing quite a bit on it the past year, maybe 2. I think he only talks about Sony on NL these days. He's mentioned getting a PS5 I think. Questioning anything he does or says will only lead to madness though.🤣
People have too high expectations to tell the truth. This was good overall, all things considered. It also has variety. It was low key brilliant to announce Legends mode for Ghost of Yotei.
If you list out the games, it wasnt bad at all, arguably impressive even. But if you watched it, it was awful. Just ridiculously long and poorly paced. Even the trailers themselves were dull, even for games im interested in.
Resident evil requiem and silent hill f really stole the show! I haven’t played a Lego game since I was a kid but that Batman game looks promising. Looking forward to the new season of fallout. Fingers crossed that we get a remaster of new vegas.
Good thanks to the black myth sequel!
It was actually better than I expected.
Ninja Gaiden 4 is looking amazing.
Valor Mortis looked pretty interesting.
Cinder City and Time Takers from NC Soft also caught my eye.
Legends announcement for Yotei was great.
Capcom also got a good showing with both RE:Requiem and Onimusha looking incredible.
I give Bloodlines 2 the benefit of the doubt because of the Chinese Room devs
And will the 3rd time be the charm for Lords of the Fallen? Probably not but we'll still get another one XD.
Interesting announcements: 0
The best part was Clair Obscur song.
Very poor, dreadfully boring. Only games that looks good are the games we knew about. And frankly, I don’t need to see more of them. Mostly all new announcements were just more slop games
Total shi...te , yotei looks better than ever , thank god for Sony and the e33 performance which was beautiful, id rather have watched them all night to be honest, and what was all that fuss over silksong, it looks crap , typical gamepass fodder
@datamonkey yeah great, I'll look forward to playing it in 2030
Didn't watch but i don't think i missed anything big.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the Lord of the fallen and black myth both just launch in the last year?
If so, wouldn’t that indicate that those games are years away?
CGI trailers do nothing for me. Even if it’s from an IP that I absolutely love, seeing one of those trailers with zero gameplay do nothing for me.
Seemed to be more content drops about stuff we already knew.
As a WoW player, i like seeing the new expansion, but it's all pretty meh. The war within was a lot of wasted potential.
Demon hunter void spec was dropped out of nowhere. There was only one boss created for the current raid with one. It's weird to mix fel and void, but whatever. I'm just salty that we keep getting these things no one asked for while the obvious tech based playable class is still nowhere to be seen.
@CallMeDuraSouka
I still hanging out on Nintendolife.
I rarely post comment here on PushSquare.
When the opening 30 minutes had better trailers then the whole show. XD It's easy to say like last year, this show was poor.
I started together to others I was watching it with about books/other things, that's how much I wasn't caring at all by the end. XD
There is tons of announcements, all these devs making the most of things, and then there is just lacking quality, substance and stylish CGI or even regardless of budget, lacking depth to their visions to cover their skill and still make it compelling enough, or we have seen better ideas wrapped up in more compelling direction. Many of these 'aren't'.
Enshrouded update looks good, Kingdom Come 2 Blacksmithing is cool, a few decent things in here, but many were just 'there'.
COD BO7 looks fancy, may play just as bland, if it doesn't present itself better with this stylish direction. They can be cinematic-ally ok, but also the most bland I've ever seen to play/do in the worlds.
Lucasarts old 3D western shooter looked fair to get a remaster.
Outer Worlds 2 looked worse here, characters looked lifeless/they didn't want to be here in expression/posing. Self awareness felt a bit off to me then it is trying to present itself as. Worse trailer than before.
Bubsy did it for me, revival or not it actually had good ideas in it and I found Demon Turf had good personality, eh gameplay, Bubsy looks to have good gameplay ideas, in a early stage of course it's trailer presentation is generic but that aside it looks good (if handled well I hope or else a Bubsy 3D so 4D game being very bland could happen if it's too empty, or too referential reliant but it looks strong enough so far) and I saw it outside the show first before seeing it in the show. The pre-show trailer games were better.
Lego Batman looked fair, but open world eh, it's going to be eh hub with nothing exciting and whether a collection of the past Lego Batman moments like Skywalker Saga or a new game, was not clear at all. They talk and show nothing and won't even tell us what the goal was, new game or collection, which is it?
The further it went on, there was decent stuff, but so much it's hard to remember or forgettable trailers/games with bland identities. That's how most of gaming looks, bland with no identity, blend together, nothing of a hook just stylish rubbish.
The rest was ok but very 'generic', follow the industry garbage.
Narrow minded things made into bland games, aesthetic over substance, ok stories, ok worlds, bland gameplay. I don't buy on weak personality, hence i won't buy, or remember any of these games at all.
These creatives need to play games more and get better ideas for substance in their games not stylish nonsense or have better mariketers who can wrap them in something better.
It's easy being a collector, seeing what's been done before and still having an idea how to make compelling gameplay, whether unique or spinning off ideas creatively it's not hard. Coding/art or level design sure it's a lot of work, but it's not hard to come up with ideas, and many of these have weak ideas, that's the problem.
Like I've said before. If I can come up with more ideas using foam that Foamstars doesn't, you have a weak game on your hands.
I didn't bother watching it as I figured I'd just skip all the filler and catch up on anything that piqued my interest once it was all done with and summed up. Turns out there were only one or two new game announcements that caught my eye and anything shown for the games I'm already interested in that I know about, didn't really move the needle for me one way or the other. All in all....... I chose wisely
i liked it , im pretty sure if you think the show was poor or very poor , idk what to tell you , i don't think you are going to be happy no matter what was shown off. maybe you just are getting too old.
Best show in years, def not "okay" or "poor". WTF everyone is on about.
Removed - unconstructive
Stopped watching these years ago, just check the list of announcements and pull up said trailers. No need for all that additional slog.
Like many have said just wait til it's over and look at what was mentioned then. Is FOMO so bad people can't wait a few minutes after the show has finished? Don't complain about the slog of a show when you don't actually have to watch it.
How did this survive but E3 didn’t? Those shows had better announcements than this.
@Dodoo I think E3 charged way too much, so publishers gradually decided it wasn't worth it.
It met my expectations. Let's leave it at that.
As some have already said, it was okay but the real problem was the pace of it. It was two hours, but it was two hours that felt much longer; it really dragged in places.
There were many interesting games shown, but it would've been more impactful if the whole thing was condensed down. If it was a really snappy one-hour show instead, I feel like impressions would be better.
Gamescom Opening Night Live always has the problem of only being a couple of months after Summer Game Fest. Gamescom itself is fine, but the opening showcase suffers a bit because, of the two, SGF is the prime spot. There's not enough "big" news to spread across the two summer shows and so ONL tends to be weaker.
Kind of poor.
I watched it as usual, after it was finished, so I can skip the uninteresting sections and save time... I wouldn't have had the patience to watch it for 2 hours.
I'm looking forward to playing these 5 games + 2 DLCs! Especially LEGO Batman and Ghost of Yotei, I loved their previous games.
I still need to finally play LEGO Batman 3 though, hopefully before 2025 ends.
2025

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight
I didn't watch it. I'll read up on what was announced some time in the future. Can't stand the big "I am" attitudes that the presenters ooze. We're here to see games, not listen to the self important twaddle nonsense they come out with. First comment hit the nail on the head for literally every one of these shows/events. Same with BAFTAS, Oscars and anything else similar, never watch celebs or wanna be celebs do anything except their job, sports, games, acting, whatever. I couldn't care less about anything else. Virtual signaling BS.
I watched this on delay and just skipped past everything that didn't interest me, and found it pretty decent that way. Plenty of interesting titles and some surprises. Every time I caught back up to the live stream, I just paused it, did some gaming and tuned back in to see what I had missed.
Honestly, a lot of people do it to themselves by watching it live and then going on to complain it's boring, too long, too many crap games, etc. Maybe learn from past experiences?
@Lowdefal @naruball yeah thanks and good points. I just find it interesting how E3 failed to change with the times. I just miss the excitement that came with it that gamescom doesn’t seem to be able to replicate. For me at least…
I put excellent just for the he man announcement.
That alone is epic.
The show though. Boring
@Dodoo same here. Reading magazines after E3 was such a treat!
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare I'm not sure it's Keighley's choice of games exactly. He can't conjure up games out of thin air, his shows have to make do with industry trends. It still had a decent amount of smaller and weirder titles, I'd say.
As a full show and spectacle, it's terrible. My comment wasn't to justify that or anything, but I just don't know what people expect if they already hated the previous shows.
All of these Geoff Keighley shows are blending together into some amorphous blob
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare Sony-only fans sounds... weird, lol.
I'm reluctant to criticize Keighley too much because he's one of the few who's still trying. These shows didn't just fall into his lap, he made them into what they are and worked hard for it. Others, like E3, completely dropped the ball. If it wasn't for him, the concept of the big gaming expo might've been close to extinction by now and we'd be left with very little outside of platform holder and publisher directs or showcases. Some might prefer that, but I think the industry would lose something without them.
You could argue three is too many, but the two other (Summer Games Fest and TGA) are both in the US, and I'm definitely in favour of having one in Europe as well. It's not perfect but I still prefer this over not having them.
@ShogunRok meaningful is subjective
I am very pleased to witness that Democracy is pointed out through games.
They also mentioned how concerned they are about the (very obvious) wrong doings of vile rules in Germany, in Europe as well as in some countries in the world.
I appreciate they aware of the dark path that powers at be, on.
It needed to be brought forward and shared.
I applauded... among some good game announcements...
@Dodoo cost , its why sony skips a lot of events , because its way cheaper to do their own events vs spending tons of money on trailers.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare hes not picking games , game developers pay to get those spots on the show. he's not hosting the show for free.
