Capcom understands Resident Evil’s secret sauce, and that’s evident in this first demo of upcoming entry, Resident Evil Requiem.
At a recent demo event prior to Gamescom, playing on a PS5 Pro, we were able to test out about 20 minutes of the upcoming survival horror. Except, we played through this demo twice: once in first-person and once in third-person. Both have their advantages, as we’ll get into later.
There was very little context for this demo, beyond our introduction to protagonist Grace Ashcroft, the daughter of Raccoon City survivor Alyssa Ashcroft from the Resident Evil Outbreak games. That’s a deep cut which will surely delight long-time fans of the franchise.

In the opening cutscene of the demo, the Japanese publisher flexes its RE Engine muscle by pulling the camera close to the heroine, as she struggles to escape from a hospital bed, where some kind of nefarious experiment is taking place.

She’s eventually able to break the container of the IV drip she’s been inexplicably hooked up to, and in a wince inducing sequence she uses the broken glass to cut herself free, snatching at her skin in the process.
It’s the kind of scene you’ll want to watch through your fingers, but that’s just Resident Evil doing what it does best.
From there, with full control – again, both in first-person and third-person – we were able to move Grace around the corridors of a seemingly abandoned hospital.
The lighting is the first thing that stands out here, and we suspect it’s going to play a fundamental part in the gameplay.
For example, our first destination was an empty kitchen room, but we couldn’t see anything at the end of the corridor. It was only later, when we discovered a lighter, we decided to return here with an actual light source.

This is all intended, of course, but Capcom’s meticulous design makes you feel like you’re in Ashcroft’s shoes and figuring it out as you go along. Upon returning, we discovered there was a dead body in the darkness – and a Quasimodo-style beast lurking behind us.
For the purposes of this preview, we’re going to refer to this monster as Quasimodo, because – at least at the time we’re writing this – Capcom hasn’t given him an official name. He’s got big bug eyes, poor posture, and looks a bit like the kind of biological waste you’d find in your toilet after a bhuna, though. A face very much fit for a flamethrower!
Anyway, ever since Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, this franchise has played host to some brilliant scenarios where you’re being stalked. But more recently we like to think of Jack from Resident Evil 7: Biohazard or even Lady Dimitrescu from Resident Evil: Village.

This feels like more of that, but we suspect it’s going to play an even bigger role.
Our ultimate objective was to find a screwdriver so we could remove the fuse from an electronics box and place it somewhere else, enabling us to make our escape. Very Resident Evil, eh?
But with Quasimodo stalking us, it wasn’t easy. Initially we tried to outrun the foe, but he just kept tracking us down again. Eventually, we learned we needed to play a game of cat-and-mouse with him, moving a hospital trolley gradually from one side of a small room to the other in order to climb up to a toolbox.
Unlock the toolbox. Get the screwdriver. Steal the fuse. Get the f*ck out.
It sounds easy (and, to be honest, it is) but it’s white knuckle tense – we could feel ourselves gripping tighter and tighter on the DualSense as we felt our pursuer’s hulking footsteps closing on our position.

As we alluded to earlier, we played through the demo twice to see both perspectives – this will be an option available at launch.
What we found staggering about this is that while the demo plays out exactly the same in first-person and third-person, both options have tailored animations. For example, Grace slips and stumbles when running in third-person, but she doesn’t in first-person. It’s the same game, but an immense amount of care has been invested into both.
And in some ways this will make for some tough decisions come launch day, on 27th February. We think the transition between cutscenes and gameplay is much more natural in third-person, but first-person lends itself better to a more immersive, higher-stakes gameplay experience. It’s going to be difficult to choose.

One final point we’ll conclude on: as Grace made her escape, she was followed by Quasimodo, who visibly gets fried by natural sunlight. Remember when we said we expected this to be a game all about lighting? We think sunlight is going to be a sanctuary here – not only because you’ll be able to see, but also because it’ll keep you safe.
Obviously, this demo only reflects a small sliver of the overall game, but it’s impressive as hell. The tension is off the charts and the presentation is among the best we’ve seen on the PS5 to date. If it’s anywhere near representative of the final product, then this is going to be an all-timer for sure.
What are your thoughts on Resident Evil Requiem now we’ve been lucky enough to go hands on? Are you looking forward to learning more about the plot in this game, and where it’s all going? Have you got the mental fortitude to escape from hulking flesh monsters? Scream in the comments section below.

My most anticipated game of next year and nothing comes close!
I will choose what is recommended at the beginning and if they don't recommend anything, I will just go with 3rd person.
I hope this will be the last game in the first person view/VR trilogy (first trilogy was 1-3 with pre-rendered background; second was the 3rd person/action games 4-6 as I see it) as I'm not very fond of them so far (7 I disliked; 8 was okayish, but was too much jack of all trades imo too really enjoy).
Unless gameplay is better in Requiem (melee combat please!) I will wait for a sale with this one, as I won't support this direction more than necessary. Just my 2 cents, I don't hate Capcom or anything.
Forget GTA6, Capcom will reign supreme in 2026 with a trio of masterpieces with this, Onimusha, and Pragmata. I don’t know how Capcom keeps raising the bar the way they have since RE7, but I’m 100% here for it. Can’t wait for Requiem!
This is giving me strong PT vibes, I've just replayed RE8 and the DLC (man, I wished that had a pro upgrade, but I did enjoy it). Cannot wait for this, it's an embarrassment of horror riches at the moment
Just pre ordered this on PS5.
Loving the first or third person view option.
My hope list
1) Don't be short
2) Be actually scary/creepy
3) Have good music
4) Have replayability
5) The story becoming too rediculous
I'm glad it's not a first person game with a third person mode, but rather two viable, well designed options. I'll be third person all the way.
Great that we can play in third-person, from day 1.
Hope they keep this option, from now on, in all future sequels.
First person worked great in VII, but once was enough.
Why Capcom didn‘t show any of what was described here in the new trailer is beyond me. That trailer was bad, and it‘s not selling me on the game at all.
Third or first person? I‘ll be playing in VR again… you hear me Capcom, VR! ☺️
Capcom is cooking real hard with the trio RE 9, Onimusha, and Pragmata.
I don’t know if it’s just me but the character animations don’t look nearly as good as in Village or the Resident Evil 4 remake. Don't get me wrong, it looks good, that’s not the issue, it just feels like a small step back.
PlayStation Access has a video of the gameplay of this demo. They mentioned they were allowed to show 10 minutes of their gameplay so I’m guessing there are other channels probably able to do the same.
@somnambulance
And awesome thing is all three looks fun to me too. Like I can imagine myself enjoying all of them which is great!
As survival-horror RE is my favourite.
Pragmata looks like a cool sci-fi TPS with a good gimmick and cute side character.
Onimusha looks really nice and "heavy" as in the sense that you will feel the "kill" and combat and thankfully it's not soulslike.
Easily my most anticipated game for next year and I'll 100% be playing this in 1st person as both the previous 2 entries were great played that way
I really hope this game isn't centered around cat and mouse sequences. I love the RE games, and while I appreciate 7 revitalizing the series, it also felt like a major departure. Excited to see more!
I’ll only buy if it comes out for PSVR2. RE Village VR2 mode was one of the best, most immersive gaming experience I ever had. Going back to flat for this would be very underwhelming.
Will there be a VR mode... If not, then I might as well sell off my PSVR2. Resident evil was the only reason I bought the thing in the first place.
All i can say as life long fan of Resi series,w8 until february is gonna be loooong time. So glad to read how horror in Resi is back.
her face looks like shiny plastic
@Toot1st I mean, sweat + correct lighting = shiny no?
@matekomlosi
Was about to comment the same thing. After watching the latest trailer, I was not impressed with the facial animations, they looked very stiff and lacked emotion. Took me out of it.
Sounds great, just I dont know how I feel about this stalking thing, gets annoying after while when you just need to get an item but waste 5 minutes extra going the long way or trying to lose the sight of said of said stalker, its fun...first time around
@get2sammyb Ringing the VR bell. Any word on whether it will be an option at launch or in the future?
I'm too scared.
So hyped. Its nice to see RE back in its prime nowadays, i remember when the series was being called dead during the era of RE6 but now the series is better then ever.
@CaptainBiscuitJeans Me too. I know I'm missing out on a great game, like all the recent RE games that will be forever on my wishlist because dammit I'm too old and tired for this sweaty palm terrifying ***** these days.
First person is for horror fans. Third person is like if there were an easy mode in Dark Souls.
@shgamer what was your problem with 7?
I see where you got the comes in 3's.
But to say you dislikes 7 bur thought 8 was ok. Baffles me.
Because im not a first person gamer, I actually haven't played any of the greatest games made because they are first person.
But I found 7 to be an absolute classic and a great direction. Esp 3/4 of it i feel like it fell off in the final quarter being to action compared to the slow pace and tense atmosphere of the redt of the game.
It was probably the first resi game I really enjoyed since 2 and 4.
Also this is going to be the firdt game in the series in which you can play 3rd person so im pretty happy to have that.
I've just completed 8 and I thought it was inferior to 7.
I finally got around to watching the trailer and some gameplay videos and the game looks great. Can't wait.
@shgamer quit crying over camera angles
@somnambulance actually since revelations 1 2012 and revelations 2 2015
@johncalmc it’s both optional
@Uromastryx yet you loved resident evil 3 nemesis
@Muscleblackcop in nemesis all encounters were location specific scripted and he didn't follow you around, you could run to next door and he wouldn't follow its not even close to the same thing as it is now in both RE Remakes, 7 and 8
lol… at all the VR comments. VR is dead for this game. PlayStation ain’t footing that bill no more.
I think I'll go the third-person way when playing on TV...
And maybe, just maybe... if a PSVR2 option was being confirmed... that would be so great for the first-person mode.
RE7, 8 and are so, so great in VR.
I'm a bit on/off when it comes to RE. I like 2 and 3 as I like the style of gameplay - slow third person, tense, survivalist item management and puzzle solving with combat. I'm not sure if RE9 will be like that again or if its going to be first person/different like 7 and 8 which I never had much interest in.
I get dizzy when I play first person games, so I always avoid them. Great to know that there is a third person view on this, and hopefully it works as old RE games and not like bethesda games in third person, which sucks.
@somnambulance gta 6 will easily dominate game sales next year no one will come even close..
@johnedwin Of course it will, but for my personal enjoyment… yeah, I think I’m looking more forward to three solid Capcom games at the moment. I’ve seen more that instills confidence from all three titles than GTA6.
@johnedwin And? GTA6 still won't beat Minecraft.
@Broosh don’t be ridiculous I bet you thought that for resident evil 7 before it’s released
@Uromastryx sometimes random and scripted did you even play the game or you played the remake that’s why you confused
