Nintendo has announced the actors who will play Link and Zelda in the firm's upcoming The Legend of Zelda film, which is being produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment.
In a tweet from Shigeru Miyamoto, it's confirmed Link will be played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Zelda is played by Bo Bragason. Miyamoto is "very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen", with the movie slated for 7th May 2027.
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is a 16-year-old British actor who has previously starred in The Haunting of Bly Manor, Son of a Critch, and Pinocchio. Bo Bragason is a 21-year-old British actor who has appeared in King and Conqueror, The Jetty, and The Radleys.
The live-action adaptation is being produced by Avi Arad (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Venom, Iron Man) and then directed by Wes Ball (Maze Runner).

The next big casting will be Gannon right? He's the villain? Sorry don't know much about the legend of Zelda, but hope it a good for the fans.
Both actors are unknown to me which is a good thing! I prefer unknown actors when people are cast as well known characters. Hope the movie turns out good!
Jeff Goldblum as Ganon.
I can see the girl working as Princess Zelda, but the boy as Link? I need some strong powers of imagination to see that working.
Shoulda been Hunter Schafer as Zelda imo
@Balie3000 Put some pointy ears on him and a blonde wig and I think it'll work well.
Hopefully the movie is better than most Sony films lately.
@somnambulance Evidence against: Avi Arad
@Icey664 Nah. Bo is a far better choice.
@somnambulance Sony makes many movies they are part of big three besides spider man and resident evil series.
I still can’t see this coming out as anything other than a cheapo 90s fantasy throwback. So I hope they just lean full tilt into that, give us Zelda: Elves in Tights with a devastating ending like Dragonheart that knocks you to the ground and thunderstomps your pendulums.
Please don’t just give us a ***** 00s Disney princess straight-to-streaming film
@MeerkatSimples Completely agree, going with unknown actors is always the best way to go.
@johncalmc not Danny DeVito?
The big question is; is movie Link going to be like game Link and just stare blankly at people talking to him without speaking and they still somehow have a full conversation with him?
@Slayer25c Sony has made films longer than they’ve made games and they’ve made a lot of good ones, but the last couple of years they’ve made some real duds.
@FuriousMachine Strongly disagree. His career has been Marvel centric. His name is very concerning that this film will be popcorn big budget action Zelda rather than something that breathes like the games do. The Spider-Verse films in his resume are basically the only reassuring films toward this one for me.
@Crimson_Ridley Haha they're going to have to make him speak, right?
@Crimson_Ridley Guess you haven't played Skyward Sword? I only say that because Link does actually have interactions with NPCs in that game.
I don't have any clue about the young actors. But from the face, i think Zelda looks quite fit. As for Link, i guess they aimed for the teen-very young Link and not the adult Link.
@somnambulance This year Sony has some solid movies like K-Pop Demon Hunter, Heart Eyes, and 28 Years Later. The director, Wes Ball, directed last year Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes which was a solid movie imho. And with Nintendo also supervise the movie, there's a chance this Zelda movie would end up good.
Zelda looks okay but link looks too american I think.
Only film I'm vaguely interested for this year is the reboot of Red Sonja!
I’ve confidence this will be good. My stepson is a huge Zelda fan so he’s really excited to see it, and I’m excited to take him on a lads day out to see it. Would be nice if they could get Hunter Schafer in there as well, she’s got a lot of fans who want her in there. Maybe a Gerudo or something?
It's a good sign we're not getting spittake-worthy casting like in the Mario movie, but I guess that's the value of this being live-action. I like that they're casting smaller actors and not people you know are getting the job for their names alone.
Bonus points if it's based more on open world Zelda: you see her for all of five minutes, and the rest of the film is Link climbing up vertical surfaces like Spider-Man while grunting loudly and falling half the time because of how often it rains in Hyrule.
I can't help but think this will be terrible when its finally released, but hopefully they prove me wrong. Not sure who they could get for Ganon and have him still looking suitable.
On the subject of Sony Pictures, I wonder if they regret not getting a cinema release for K-Pop Demon Hunters? Those songs are everywhere at the moment.
On topic: I wonder how the box office of Zelda will compare with the recent Mario and Minecraft movies
@Icey664 Tbh I'm glad she hasn't, she would have been subjected to so much hate that it isn't worth the role. I'm looking forward to seeing her in Blade Runner 2099.
@get2sammyb I really hope, my least favorite part of those games is Link being a living brick wall with eyes. Most of Breath of the Wild's plot is told through a Zelda monologue. Then he saves her and its like
👑
👁👄👁 🧱🧱🧱(Oh Link you're the best hero of the kingdom. Thank you for rescuing me! Then he stares at her happily then credits roll.) How am I to care about the stories of these characters when the interactions of the main characters are just a monologue?
Excited for this but curious who the target audience is. Will it be kids? Or more of a Princess Bride/Hook- type adventure where it's aiming for older kids? Would love it if it filled that gap. Little light violence and some scares but nothing too crazy - I feel like a lot of films today don't even try to strike that balance anymore.
@Hyena_socks "cheapo 90s fantasy throwback"
Which 90s films were you thinking of? The 2 movies I think this will look like most are Willow 1988 and Eragon 2006. Those are basically the same movie only Eragon has a dragon, don't think Zelda will.
All of the LOTR and Hobhit movies are after 2000 but I never put them in the same category as the cheapo 80s stuff, they're actual films. Who knows, maybe they can get this there.
Oh I forgot Legend. Maybe this is just Legend. Probably the closest.

For it's time, I consider Excalibur 1981 the OG of fantasy films. But I think it's too dark and adult for Zelda.

@PuppetMaster Never heard of Heart Eyes, so I’ll have to look that one up.
K-Pop Demon Hunter might be the movie title I’ve ever seen that has made me feel the most totally old and out of touch of trends I’ve ever felt. 😂 Never heard of that one either. I’ll wait til I do that before I make assumptions. Lol.
@Swirly Maybe that movie wouldn't have hit as hard if it was in cinemas. I guess we'll never know.
@sanderson72 I was vaguely interested in that too until I saw the trailer.
@somnambulance Sounds like we actually agree, then. As I said, he is evidence against this being a quality film as most of what he's been involved in is useless dreck, IMO, and the handful of good movies he's had a hand in (Spidervers, for example) I believe are good in spite of his involvement
I've never heard of them tbh so I have no real opinion.
@somnambulance
Seem fine so far this year to me, 28 years later and karate kid legends were both decent
@Hylian-Likely "Hyrule, here we come!"
@wiiware …in what way does he “look American?”
@somnambulance I have been a getting spammed with ads for K-Pop on Netflix after most shows. Its sounds terrible, but the more the advert plays the more tempted I am to give in and just watch the damn thing 😂
@somnambulance I'm also old and didn't know much about of K-pop. But surprisingly for me the movie was pretty fun to watch with really good animations, catchy songs, and a simple story but with a good message.
Heart Eyes is a slasher movie mixed with some rom-com which also surprised me someone can mixed the two genre and it's pretty good.
@Icey664 stop. Anyone who thought that was actually going to happen, is insane.
@Icey664 Depending on how well this movie does… They need an actor who can play Zelda for at least 3 films. Hunter Schafer was already a no go cause she too old.
Wish them luck. Will be interesting to see how they adapt Link.
@Anthony_Daniels Hopefully we can avoid the Spider-Man spin off films for a couple years, so Sony can restore its credibility.
@PuppetMaster @Ilyn Maybe I’ll keep an eye out for it if I ever resub to Netflix.
@FuriousMachine Ah, I thought you were making evidence against me rather than evidence against the film. Thanks for clearing that up. Last thing I want to see is a generic, formulaic action flick version of Zelda. I’d rather see a flick that went the “Excuse me, Princess” route than that. At least it’d be interesting.
@somnambulance Aha, yeah, I see now how my comment could be read that way. Apologies for that. I can assure you that I have absolutely no evidence against you of any kind
I also realised that it made me look like someone who knew who Avi Arad was and thought he was a good producer... makes me wonder what kind of person someone like that would be
Glad they went with unknown's, this is the type of franchise that can build careers, and I'm certain Ganondorf will be a big name to balance it out. Not sure about the Link actor, need to hear his most obnoxious "well excuse me, Princess" before I feel confident in him.
"Problematic age gap" discourse is going to haunt this movie all the way up to release, even though they're certainly not going to be a couple in this.
Casting looks spot on, but I am more concerned about the director and producer tbh.
@rjejr I was thinking of films like Dragonheart, Robin Hood: Men in Tights (not strictly fantasy-fantasy), and the various 90s fantasy tv shows. But that whole aesthetic of, as you mentioned, 80s and 90s fantasy. Cheap costumes and effects, but a lot of heart and a proper sense of fun and adventure. Something like the recent Dungeons & Dragons film
They all took themselves a little too seriously in the 00’s, or got too saccharine
@AverageGamer Only a 5 year age gap between the actresses, so don't think that's the issue. As someone else pointed out though, she would have received a lot of hate, which is probably the better reason.
The reason this movie exists itfp is that Capitalism breeds innovation.
Imagine this on the big screen:
"Heeeh! Heh! Hya! *pot breaks"
DOA movie.
@Czar_Khastik I need an opinion here
I would of said ellie fanning as zelda and God knows as link maybe keanu reeves or denzel Washington
@Icey664 5 years gap is a big gap when you realize this movie won’t release be releasing until 2027, and Hunter Schafer will be pushing 30, by the 2nd, and pushing mid 30s by the 3rd films.. vs mid 20s and late 20s.
Sony wanted teens-young adult actors for these roles… not adult actors.
As long as Link says "hey... listen!" I'm all in
Ok great news and shes cute that's W but hummm who? Never of Heard of this actors
Young, unknown actors? I am totally fine with this. I can see this working. If Miyamoto keeps his hands in during the making of the film, the this could turn out to be something special.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare @dskatter His face looks american? Well, maybe his looks can be a bit more fantasy-like if given blonde link wig and elves ear.
@johncalmc Yes! That would be perfect!!! It will never happen though.
On a different note.... Jack Black as live action Bowser?
How could Sony not get Tom Holland as Link and Mark Wahlberg as Zelda!?
@Henchdog lol that made me laugh I woudnt be suprised either 😆
@Crimson_Ridley I always took it as (maybe Nintendo did intend that I don't know, besides that he is a self insert character) that he can talk we just can't hear him talk. He does talk in universe just not when we play as him (not as in a he talks without the player way) but as in all his staring, grunts and other noises of listening is still him talking as we do get responses from the characters as if Link spoke I think.
Well the actors seem fine, but who to be the villain, will it be original? Ganon? Vatti (from Four Swords)? Or any other villains over the years even if many versions of Ganon being interpreted. Besides of course the script having to have Link talk, we can't have staring or grunts as people won't like it even if it is key to the universe that Link doesn't people when the player is there but can speak and people respond to him in universe.
Will we have a Spirit Tracks or a Zelda Echoes of Wisdom format? Or are we just going to have them do whatever? Will there be Tetra or Sheik? Or we keeping it simple? The universe is so broad anything is possible.
it could be more original like Mario movie tried to put a mix of things per sub series (understandable why they did that for showing off the series to lead people to the many games) in there while focusing on it's core of Mario as an isekai like it always has been just we usually always see the games in that universe rather then the him in human form/world.
This is or isn't a One Room anime of 'fill in what you want to say but don't know what the characters say after'. But it could be comparable. Even if that is a perspective anime and was enjoyable for how weird it was.
@SuntannedDuck2 They're not gonna use an original villain for the first movie. So it's definitely Ganon.
@somnambulance
I might be surprised to know they release alot more than Spider-Man films .
Strange I know
So turns out Bo Bragason had a motion capture role as young Lunafreya in FF XV movie
https://www.gamesradar.com/entertainment/fantasy-movies/the-legend-of-zelda-movie-has-finally-cast-its-titular-princess-and-it-turns-out-she-was-already-a-video-game-movie-veteran-at-roughly-12-years-old-thanks-to-final-fantasy/
Great, they cast a woman !
@Icey664 Nope. It would never have been.
Strewth a Hollywad movie without Pedro being cast in it?
@Hyena_socks Dragonheart was good. Nobody should ever have to think about Mel Brooks Robinhood Men in Tights (1993). 😂 Let's assume you just meant Kevin Costner Robinhood Prince of Thieves (1991) and continue shall we. 😎
I liked the recent D&D movie where it's played for laughs, can't imagine they'll go for that w/ Zelda. She's too self important and he's too important. I think they'll go more serious epic LOTR Academy Award feel that the Hobbits Saturday matinee comedy feel. Or at least I think they should.
From today's news on AC getting made into a TV series, I really hope Zelda is more epic adventure like Prince of Persia Sands of Time and less whatever discombobulated mess that AC movie was.
I think it can, and should, be good. But they gotta thread the needle. Everyone has to be on the same page. Is it drama, comedy, action, emotion, VFX or love story? More ways to screw it up than succeed but I have hope.🤞
@janineking But Link doesn't say that — it's Navi!
@get2sammyb : sorry about that . Hope my comment doesn't get removed for being deemed "unconstructive"
