Ghost of Tsushima released for PlayStation 4 on the 17th July 2020, meaning that it's one year old today. The PS4 exclusive was extremely well received by both players and critics, and went on to be a commercial blockbuster for Sony. Developer Sucker Punch also did a great job of supporting the game once it was on the market, providing notable free updates, like a New Game+ mode, and an entire co-op component called Ghost of Tsushima Legends.
Looking back at our Ghost of Tsushima PS4 review, we still agree with the assessment. Ghost of Tsushima remains one of our absolute favourite open world titles of the last generation, and, of course, it plays even better on PS5. It's still an absolutely gorgeous game, completed by a supremely satisfying combat system — and it's probably about to get even better with the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut.
But how do you feel about Ghost of Tsushima, now that it's a year old? Has your opinion changed at all? Vote in our polls, and then cut through the Mongol horde in the comments section below.

I would have given it an instant 8 at launch for the intro sequence alone, but there was this one moment in the narrative where I realised this game was at least a 9.
A solid 9/10, if I was to play it now I'd think its a next gen game compared to the actual next gen games out now
One of the few unquestionable 10’s from last gen for me, along with Bloodborne, God of War and RDRII.
It's still a 9 for me. My only real issue I can come up with is the AI is a bit too easy to manipulate but the Wind mechanic is legit the best idea I've seen for the open world genre since it's inception really. I haven't played an open world game since but I really feel like it's going to be weird playing open world games without something like it. Hell of a game Sucker Punch put out.
I enjoyed this so much. The story was kept simple as appropriate for this kind of setting. Character side quests gave memorable characters. The gameplay was not super challenging but was still engaging. The exploration of environment for powerups was great. The sound was stimulating. Oh and photo mode was fun. Certainly a top 5 PS4 game for me.
I like it more now than I did the first month it released because of the free performance upgrades and added multiplayer.
The game that has ruined combat for me in all other open world games.
I gave it a solid 9, but hovered over 10 for the longest time. Its not that i dont think the game deserves it (heck, it deserves it for the amount of time i spent in photo mode alone), and the presentation is excellent - to the point i even bought the art book. But there is always room for refinement. Little things like the AI issue where you could hide in a tent and the enemy would queue up to be stabbed through the curtain, and the fact all the houses were identical inside. But these are very small points in what is one of my favourite games ever made.
Honestly, the game has spoiled other open worlds for me in a way. Who needs all that ui nonsense, when this had the guiding wind mechanic which was one of the best innovations ive seen in the open world space in a long time.
I cant wait to play the new content next month
I only finished it a couple of weeks ago but it's a cracker of a game. Between an 8 and a 9 for me with the main story pulling the score up. I could see how people could fall of it though. Better to not do to much of the side stuff early on and get to the second area.
The person who gave a 1/10 must have been dropped as a baby
Solid 9 from me, awesome game! 😎
Gameplay itself isn’t something special but the overall atmosphere, visuals and sound really made it for me.
9 as one of my favourite PS4 titles.
It was a pleasure to play it on Ps5 with 60 fps. So smooth.
Looking forward to the Singleplayer expansion.
Someone voted abysmal! 😂😂😂😂 That’s an xbot trying to stir sh*t up. Even if u don’t love this game, u have to appreciate what they did. This is a solid 9 maybe even a 10!
Someone actually have it a 1? I mean, I’ve never played it but there’s no way any game that gets that many rave reviews can realistically be a 1.
@Culjoseth I mean, it’s far more likely to be someone doing it for a laugh than to please their Xbox overlords. Grow up.
Easy 8. Loved the story, great game mechanics and stunning visuals with the PS5 patch. What I didn't enjoy as much was its repetitive nature, but that goes for pretty much every single open-world game to some extent.
Ah someone gave it a 1, I thought I could taste salt
Added to the list of open-world games I never finished because I got bored. I have a problem where after I get all the “powers” I lose interest.
Not the fault of the game though!
9/10 for me. It was close to a 10, but I did get to a point where I was ready for it to be over, and I wanted to move on to something else. So I guess, for me, it slightly outstayed its welcome. I absolutely loved the combat in the game, though. It is so satisfying when you get adept at switching stances in the middle of combat depending on the aggressor.
No it hasn't I still think it's the best game of last gen and it's definitely my all time favourite game in fact I'm playing it right now
Gave it a 10. I don't think it's a perfect game and it does have some issues but my overall enjoyment playing this game has overshadowed some of its flaws. It's one of the most satisfying AAA game that I've played.
Still a 9 for me
I gave it a 7, I felt like Sucker Punch stick to the same formula when it comes to missions and sub missions and there wasn’t a great amount of variety when attempting to complete everything.
Saying that, the presentation of this game and it’s design is simply the best. I couldn’t find one place on the entire map that looked as if they had rushed getting it completed. Considering that it was built for the PS4 I think it will go on to have a timeless quality to it in years to come.
10. Favourite game from last gen
Rarely does a game cause me to change my mind about philosophical or sociopolitical issues. What do we make of rules in time of war? Should anything be allowed, or should we ban things such as nukes and nerve gas? What if you are defending yourself against an invading force? If we allow things or ban things, how does that effect the populace and our culture?
Ghost of Tsushima addresses these issues expertly, in my opinion. The gameplay melds perfectly with the themes of the story - another rarity in the craft of video games. You experience first-hand the pros and cons of obeying or defying rules of war via the combat approach you choose to take.
The gameplay is fun and engaging. The wind mechanic is an elegant solution to some pervasive problems in most open-world games (over-reliance on mini-maps, etc.). The art style and graphics are beautiful. Side quests actually felt more like side stories with their own story beats.
What an achievement! Ghost of Tsushima pushes the medium forward. Games like this are why people love PlayStation.
10/10 easy. Not even up for debate.
@nessisonett Isn’t ironic how people that tell people to grow up are usually the ones that need to!
So fluid and polished.Last third map kinda sucked and got me bored.9 cant wait to replay at 60fps at some point even though perf was perfect as is
For the regular game as an isolated experience, I'd still give it an 8. However, after all the new things they've added like new game plus and the really good Legends mode, the overall package is easily a 9 in my book.
@KippDynamite well said! This is exactly the stuff that elevated this game for me as well. It engaged me in a huge variety of very deep themes without ever being preachy, pretentious or offensively on the nose. The package as a whole consistently put me in such a contemplative yet rejuvenating head space. I truly loved being in this terrible yet beautiful world.
8/10 from me, great game, I just didn't personally find the story all that great for me hence the 8. Gameplay was 10/10 though.
Oh it's easily a 9 for me.
Bring on the update.
What I love about this game is the wind mechanic and the hud mechanics to show what you need to do are in the game's environment. I love this cause now Suckerpunch has to be creative with its navigation. If they remove this in a sequel it will be the worst thing they've done.
Ghost of Tsushima offers interesting insight into the state of game publications today. When it released, it received an 83 on metacritic from critics. While not a bad score by any means, it was weighed down by publications that gave it mediocre and poor reviews for being on "outdated open world game" and "failing to innovate." At the same time, user reviews on metacritic gave it a 9.2, simply because the game was well made and was fun. By contrast, critics gave Last of Us 2 a 93 on metacritic, while users gave it a 5.7. This was a game that publications felt compelled to say "innovated" in certain areas and they rewarded that. But game reviews shouldn't hinge solely on whether a game innovates, but rather is it good. Innovation is great if it makes games better, but it can just as easily make games worse. When a developer takes risks and the risks don't pay off, they shouldn't be rewarded for taking them. Innovation is a gamble and it should remain that way. If not, we will inventivize the production of games that are poorly made and not fun, simply because they do something differently. Thankfully Push Square didn't fall into this trap. I think they gave Ghost the review it deserved.
This game surpassed all expectations. I enjoyed Second Son, but Sucker Punch transcended everything they released before on this game.
@Wilkens
TLoU2 got review bombed because people make assumptions and spew hate on those assumptions. Ellie being lesbian was a trigger for some. The assumption that Abby was transgender was another. In no way did these impact the gameplay, but ignorance reigns on the Internet.
Not played it yet. Solid 8/10 masterpiece.
I’m bummed they’re re-releasing it... seemed about due for a price drop. One day... I’ll come back in a couple of years and rate in the poll.
Ghost of Tsushima is an absolute treat. I can't wait to play it again.
Still haven't played it and don't really feel like it. I'm burnt out on open world games and this looks like your typical run-of-the-mill open world game. I'll eventually try it, but still waiting for it to hit the bargain bin.
8 for me. Visually stunning and well executed, slick combat however I felt the world was vapid and empty and lacked any life. The villages were boring and bare, looked the same throughout and I found the quests extremely repetitive. The legends mode was a welcome addition and I had a lot of fun with that.
@Ear_wiG That’s definitely the fault of the game design... never played GoT but many open world games share that problem.
Assassin’s Creed 2 was the best game I ever played for about four hours... then the difficulty curve went off a cliff. I don’t need to engage with any of the games mechanics, I don’t need to sneak around unless forced to by a mission because combat is trivial... I don’t even need a weapon because I can take the enemies‘. It went from a completely immersive world to 1) rotate camera towards objective marker, 2) press forward, 3) hold X.
I don’t play a lot of open world games, but for example Xenoblade Chronicles X and Subnautica do not have that problem. Their are layers of challenge that are spread throughout the experience. You never become overpowered for very long, you’re just able to meet the next layer of challenge.
I’m not sure how GoT handles this, but no shame in blaming the design if you’re not enjoying it. You are not the problem!!!
@gollumb82 Same. I was on a feudal Japan kick after playing Sekiro and Nioh 2, but I’m too skeptical about a go to the icon-fest open world for more than 20 bucks or a PSNow sub. It’s very tempting though!
Love this game..my oppinion of it is the same as when it launched..awesome..the only game i have played recently that changed my mind about it was horizon zero dawn..initially i didnt like it but i tried it again and found it to be a damn good game and possibly even better looking at times than ghost..
It's a brilliant game.
Makes Paradroid on C64 look like a stinking pile of sh*te.
When I first finished it I gave the game a 8/10 but it was not long after finishing it my opinion of the game drastically changed and it became 6/10 game for me .
I only ever remembered enjoyed exploring in the game with everything else feeling so repetitive especially with the combat .
My biggest complaint with the game came down to how unoriginal it was given it was another Assassin Creed like open world game .
I am extremely tired of the Ubisoft Formula
9/10 for me, which is incredible, especially considering the fact that I generally don't much care for Samurai or Ninja genres of games. So the fact that Sucker Punch were able to create a samurai game that I not only liked, but loved, is an incredible feat and a true testament to Sucker Punch as a Developer.
Plus I think it's awesome how Ghost of Tsushima was able to have such a positive impact on the real-life island of Tsushima, always great whenever a video game is able to make a positive real-life impact on the world, especially during difficult times as these.
Really wish PlayStation / Sucker Punch had made a 1-hour long Documentary of the Making of Ghost of Tsushima, like with God of War, Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, Demon Souls Remake etc. Really would love to see and understand the thought process and the trials and tribulations that went into the creation of this excellent game.
A solid 8, a good game but it is very repetitive. After nearly finishing Days Gone the two games have a lot in common. They're almost the same game in lots of ways. It's interesting how one got dismissed and the other lauded.
It is a repetitiveiveiveiveive game.
But no more so than the likes of GTA or RDR 1 and 2.
I only played Ghost for the first time a few months ago. I think it's a very good Ubisoft map game that's elevated by its commitment to its setting. However, I also kind of think in a lot of ways it's one of Sucker Punch's least interesting games. I think the companion quests are easily the best part of the game, but the main storyline has a lot of issues for me in terms of narrative leaps.
I'd give it an 8. It's a great game, just likely one I'll never revisit, unless I finally give Legends a go. I can't really even imagine myself playing the DLC island unless there are some significant gameplay and progression additions.
I felt the same way about Spider-Man.
For the record I think Sucker Punch's best work is Sly 2 and infamous: First Light.
My only real problem with GoT was the lack of an enemy lock-on. That's apparently been fixed, so I think I'd enjoy it even more now.
Sure the busywork was a bit repetitive but anything less than a nine seems harsh for me, given how beautiful it all was.
Its more than the sum of its parts and I think I appreciate that point more in hindsight. It offers a stunning, ethereal world... one I've never visited before. I just want slightly deeper world building next time, a living breathing world. With more characterful side missions.
Its a 9 out of 10.its my second favorite exclusive next to god of war.word up son
9/10 for me.
Was my personal GOTY for 2020.
Took a massive dump on the Assassin's Creed series.
7/10 good main story stylish but bog standard ubisoft open world design clear icons off a map
@Old-Red very true very similar games
9 and anything else from anyone just shows me they know jack sh*t about videogames. Sorry, not sorry x)
7 for me, combat is fun, stealth is a bit rubbish and it suffers from the usual open world nonsense and it's completely unbalanced, making it very easy towards the end. I enjoyed my time with it but it's far from one of my favourites even on PS4 but I'd be up for a sequel
8/10. Was great but to me was never something out of the extraordinary. The story was ok, but a lot the the character development in terms of you becoming a ghost felt “disconnected” from the story, for me at least.
7/10
Beautiful Presentation. "Meh" Everything Else.
I played Spider-Man and Horizon: Zero Dawn twice each, got the Platinums, and played through the DLC.
With this game, I dropped it not long after the credits finished rolling and I'm skipping the DLC. It's good, but Sony's other titles rise above it by a good amount.
@lacerz There was certainly a lot of review bombing related to that. However, there was also a large contingent of people that felt the game was just boring and not well made, and that Naughty Dog thought that those other elements of the story would carry the game, when they did not.
11/10
Love the game, just behind Witcher 3 in my top 10 beloved games from last generation.
Easily 10/10. The game was fantastic and I loved the story, the locale, the characters, the combat.
Sucker Punch really outdid themselves.
I voted 8 but only cos I had to round up for a 7.5.
The game looked amazing and was very well made. Saying that however this was the first open world stealth action adventure game I ever played and honestly I can see some people’s frustrations. The game occasionally felt a bit like a slog and whilst I did all side quests, I wanted to know more about the characters.
Saying that, many side quest paths could have been so much shorter. Took me ~80 hrs to Platinum; could have spend 50-60 hrs and nothing of value would have been lost.
What's truly insane is that The Last of Us II released in June 2020, followed by Ghost, then all the PS5 launch window games (Sackboy, Demon's Souls, Miles Morales, Astrobot, Destruction All-stars, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank)...and Xbox hasn't released anything. All we hear is GAMEPASS! How about games?
For reference, Zenimax put out around 19 games last gen. Sony has put out nearly half that number in the last year.
Hi there fellow gamers.
The game is 10/10 before and it is a 10/10 now.
That is all.
Cheers, stay safe and happy gaming to us all
6, in a over saturated open world market, other than the setting it was incredibly formulaic once you strip it down. It was very pretty but also felt very empty.
@Spiders It’s so much better than those 2 tho.
7 from me. It's a beautiful looking game with excellent sound and enjoyed the story. Felt it was let down though by terrible stealth, poor climbing sections and repetitive quests. The amount of times you had to follow footprints got tired very quickly. Still hopeful they can improve on it in any sequel.
@Culjoseth Ghost of Tsushima is better than Xenoblade Chronicles X and Subnautica!?
They all set out to do completely different things with their open world — if Ghost does what it wants to do half as well as those games, I’m in for a treat when I get around to it. My impression though, is it’s an Ubisoft style open world that does little to shake up the formula.
My GOTY last year along with TLoUP2. Can't wait to play it again with the PS5 version. Amazing open world, great combat, solid story and characters and some of the best visuals out there even now.
i'd put it up there , and with the ps5 upgrade and dlc i'd put it near a 10 for me. hopefully the new island is on the same level as the frozen wild in horrizon.
why is this even a talking point? we ALL know it was a 10/10 best game of 2020 HANDS DOWN!! we ALL know what really was supposed to be GOTY.. The best character arc and development, new ip, new concepts, very good voice acting and combat mechanics.... yeah..... I would STILL GIVE IT A 10! gave it a 10 first go round!!
@BusyOlf im really trying to understand "the missions were boring", "the missions were repetitive". Like it took place in a feudal Japan, were people expecting to hovercraft fly over cities and perform flying horse maneuvers? I think people need to keep the game and the period into context when they voice their concerns about missions.. If sucker punch would have went too far outside of the norms of the world it was in, people would have complained.. I thought the missions, in relation to the game and the period it took place it, were just fine....
What has happened, is gamers expect a joyride at 100 mph, from start to finish of a game, and that is not something that any game can do, with success all of the time.. Just enjoy the fact that you get to time travel to another period, be a character that you would never be, and live stories that you would never be a part of.. Isn't this what gaming was/is about in the long run??
@MakersMark You don’t need hovercrafts and spaceships to make something exciting or less repetitive. There is so much more that could have been done with that setting that wasn’t. So many different character interactions and quests that could have existed that weren’t simply go to A. wipe out this mongol camp. Go to B. wipe out this mongol camp. The world was not living and breathing. It was empty. If you are happy with those sort of quests and get a lot of enjoyment out of it then that’s great, but you can’t shut people down for wanting a little bit of variety in a game. Most games have repetitive elements but there’s something in how they are executed that can distract from the repetitive nature of the game. GoT for me wasn’t able to distract me from it and so I found it a bit of a slog. That being said, I did get the platinum and I did enjoy Legends. I can see why people might give it a 9 or 10 but I can also see why some people might give it sub 8 and that’s fine.
I have no doubt if a sequel came they would totally flesh out the world and build on what they created and I would totally jump on that in a heartbeat.
no game is a 10/10 theres no perfect game. theres always something that could be better
even my favourite games of all time arnt 10/10s
I'm one of those lucky ones that will experience the game for the first time because i haven't played it yet. I just need a PS5.
It was a 9 for me. I loved the game and the story was, for me, really well written. My only real issue with it was how ugly the water looked (to me, anyway) when you reached the coast. Hopefully the PS5 updates will improve that, as the rest of it was beautiful.
Gets a 9 from me. I really enjoyed it, the use of colour and the art direction is phenomenal in Ghost. It’s not a perfect game though, I felt it did really start to drag near the end and while the story was ok it wasn’t great. I enjoyed some side stories like Yuna’s and the revenge lady more than the main story. It does get really repetitive too.
The art direction and setting kept me interested though and made it memorable, great game.
@Wilkens To be fair when i checked the use reviews i did find out a lot of people who just reviewbombed it because they could not handle certain things.
@Jacko11 I actually was dropped as a baby, and I'd still give it a solid 9
@ApostateMage if the controller functionality of the dual sense is incorporated properly, I imagine it'll be worth the wait!
@Jacko11 Probably an Xbot...
Almost everything I love about this game... the only thing is the lip sync in Japanese🤣
@Spiders GoT is better than the 2 u named. If u play games just for mechanics and something new to a formula, then u might not like it. But, if u play games to enjoy the story with great gameplay, then u will not be able to put it down.
@culjoseth I'm skeptical — XCX and Subnautica are in my top 25 games of all-time and generally I prefer new experiences to polished ones, but I'm looking forward to giving it a chance eventually.
If it's as good as you say, I'll come back here give you some PushSquare comment bucks.
@eltomo They are fixing that in DC version.
@MakersMark so because i found the side quests to be laborious in which i spent a large amount of my time taking on Mongol camps in varying sizes i am supposed to "just enjoy the game" regardless and to not pick out areas where the game could be improved on? you do know this game is based on fantasy, there was no Jin Sakai running around looking for Haiku spot? or being able to roll around the ground with a bow and sword on his back whilst being stealth?
It's a made up story based around a historical period in Japans history. It's entertainment, packaged up and sold to satisfy all who buy it. Unfortunately, i found certain parts of the game to be unsatisfying because they stuck to open world tropes that are in every other open world game when it comes to tasks.
Constructive criticism is vital in any artist trying to improve on their craft. It's all very well showing your passion for something and defending against others who don't align with your opinion but i can guarantee that those at Sucker Punch will want to know the areas that people did not enjoy. It is what will make the sequel better and a benefit to us all
It's a really good game, technically efficient with good combat and some decent characters. I only recently played inFAMOUS Second Son and the main story for this isn't far off being the same as Ghost's.
I enjoyed my time with GoT but overall I rate it below some of Sony's big hitters like God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and, of course, The Last of Us Part II.
I gave it 8/10 and I'd stick by that, indeed I think I may have enjoyed Days Gone just a smidgen more.
It's very pretty though, perhaps even too pretty!
😉
It's an absolutely amazing game, I believe it is right up there with Horizon and God of War. Bit bummed that Sony are going to charge extra for DualSense support ( it is already 4k60 on ps5), kind of wish Sony had Smart Delivery.
But the game itself is 10/10, and I strongly believe it was a superior game to The Last of Us 2 and should have got Goty.
We were pretty spoiled last year really, weren't we? This, Last of Us 2, Doom Eternal, Command and Conquer Remastered, Assassins Creed Valhalla.
@Flaming_Kaiser That's absolutely true, as I noted in my previous comment. However, those reviews are far short of the majority. There were hundreds of reviews on metacritic, as there are many on youtube and other forums where people could handle those things just fine, they just felt the game was boring and poorly made. Even under the most charitable view, gamers' general perception of Last of Us 2 was far less favorable than the professed view of online publications.
10/10 not enough flute
@Spiders Looking forward to my comment wallet overflowing!!!!😂😂
Still on the shelf. Gotta finish Shenmue and Dragon Quest 11 first.
My favourite game of all time. Brilliant setting and great story. Spent many Saturday nights this past year wandering around with Nobu and a load of beer.
@Wilkens Poorly made in what way i can get with the point that someone does not like the story but Poorly made that has to be a joke.
@Flaming_Kaiser I think Skill Up does a good job of summarizing how a lot of people feel about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GB20A8CitRU
9/10 for me. Lost a point in the fact there was still repetitive things here and there for example hostages randomly throughout the map with the same thank you sentence each time.
Definitely a 9. Great game and well supported.
8 from me. Gorgeous to look at and solid controls but repetition did start to creep in.
@Wilkens I just dont agree its not Poorly made.
@Flaming_Kaiser That's ok. A lot of people feel that it is. A lot more than those who feel that way about Ghost of Tsushima. This still illustrates my point about the current separation between most video game publications and video gamers.
Again, asking for a score without any method and just based of a feeling proves that its BS.
From my point of view the game is great, Excellent and outstanding. Scores are only relevant for marketing and clickbait.
@lacerz
Indeed. I feel gamepass has been snowballing mainly because of marketing and free advertising from the media. That's where the disconnect between the press and the gamers becomes obvious. The press and youtubers already need access to a lot of games, including xbox studio games. Gamepass is only great value if you are interested in most xbox studio games and have much free time available to play random games.
Time is money. For instance I've just bought Dark Soul III with dlc included from £24 on Amazon. That will take me a couple of months to go through and with some other games in my library or PS+. There is no need for more subscription adding to monthly bills and added to games you actually want and have to buy anyway.
A worthy 9 from me, great game, really good characters and enjoyable combat.
Would give it a 6 as I found it too repetitive and I got bored after completing act one and have not played it since. It got to point where it became too laborious and it was here we go again another village to clear, another patrol or another person to rescue all of which play out in the same way as the last one. Stand off gets old after the 100th time.
The grass and trees and wind is impressive but then a lot of other things like rocks are very low res and look terrible. The characters feet often either sinking into the ground or there is a gap between them and the ground.
I enjoyed the story and the combat, missions were good because of the narrative and the location/art style was very good. I had problems with the side missions and their variety, I also didn't enjoy the collectathon it had you go through throughout the game, I don't see why open world games feel like they have to punish you with so much of this stuff. 7/10
A solid 10/10 Simply Outstanding
I save 10s and 9s for games that are absolute classics in my book and GOT fell just shy of that. I still loved it though and put it up there as one of the best of the generation
