Alongside sharing news that the PlayStation 5 has now sold 10 million units, making it the fastest-selling console out of Sony ever, the company also issued updates on purchasing figures for many big titles native to the hardware. Courtesy of an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, we now know Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales has sold 6.5 million copies, last month's Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has already topped 1.1 million sales, and MLB The Show 21 currently sits on two million units distributed to buyers. Returnal, meanwhile, has 560,000 copies to its name.
Speaking to the aforementioned site, Jim Ryan says engagement with the PS5 platform is the highest the firm has ever seen, no matter which way you look at it. "Whether it's the number of people measured by a metric such as MAU [Monthly Active Users], or whether it's the time that these people spend playing games. Both of these metrics are showing very significant double-digit growth compared to the launch window of PS4, the previous high-water mark."
Ryan says Sony was confident these statistics would beat the highs of the PS4 generation, but even it is a bit taken aback by the reality. "But fair to say that the engagement has surprised us, in a very pleasant way."
The CEO then moves on to discussing different financial strategies and experimenting with different markets, such as Xbox Game Pass. The latest iteration is the fastest-selling instalment in the sports franchise, and Ryan believes that's because it's a fantastic title on its own. "It's always interesting to experiment with new models but the core reason that MLB: The Show has done so very well is that it's a really great game that is now the fastest-selling title in the franchise's history. Our San Diego studio just gets better and better with each annual iteration, we're ever so proud of this team. I just wish I could understand the sport..."

Part of it has to be the fact that the people buying it probably were or would be the most active and engaged Ps4 users. I think there is a collection bias issue. Put another way, what specific about PS5 is making people behave differently?
As an American I can even say baseball is weird. That and golf are the only professional sports I'm aware of where you can make 20 million a year and sport a beer belly
Congrats to all the teams! It's a shame Sackboy and Demon's Souls weren't among the games listed because I think those are two of the finest games during the PS5 era so far.
@RBMango Yes definitely would have been good to see how those games sold as well. I've bought both and both are great games.
Good to see Returnal doing well considering a lot of people were hung up on either the price, the difficultly or the lack of being able to save.
@koffing Part of the engagement growth is definitely due to people being stuck at home more. Not saying that's all there is to it but I'm sure it made an impact.
@koffing it’s a direct comparison to PS4 over its same release period. The PS4 would have been mostly bought by heavy PS3 users and generally more hardcore gamers. The comparison is fair and apt.
so days gone 5 millon in sales nope not good enough no sequel ...death stranding 5 million sales not good enough no sequel. does that mean we wont get another ratchet or returnal now ?
@render Returnal is easily my game of the year so far. It’s great.
selling one million isnt the mile stone it used to be 1 million usually doesnt even cover development costs now days
MLB the show sales are ok despite it being available day one on Gamepass
@trev666 I don’t think you understand how this works. Ratchet will probably hit 10m lifetime. Returnal was made in 18 months by a team of 80, so a budget of around $10-15m and has already easily made a profit.
Great to see these high quality games doing well for Sony and fans alike. Was a miracle both Xbox and Sony were able to get these systems out on time in the first place.
@ChrisDeku theres no way ratchet and clank rift apart sells 10 million copies
@AgentGuapo It's easily mine too. If they came out and said they were going to do some DLC for it or even a NG+ then I'd made over the moon.
@TBubs311 You are forgetting about darts. Nearly every one of them has a beer belly.
I might of missed it, but if not, how many of those Spiderman sales were purely PS5? The way it is worded seems as if that is across both PS4 and PS5 in which case, how many PS5 copies have sold would be more interesting to know.
@trev666 you realise Miles morales sold around 1M in its release month right?
There will be 10-15x the amount of PS5s in circulation by the end of the generation. I don’t think people have adjusted their sales expectations from late gen to early gen…
These sales are up to the end of June, Sony’s reporting period.
@Rural-Bandit No disagreement there. I can barely catch a baseball
@Enigk Now there's a high intensity sport
So only just over 500k sales for Returnal after 2 months (reports are to end of June), and Sony consider it a big success?
Does that mean the game was cheap to make and shouldn't have cost £70 if it wasn't an AAA production?
@ChrisDeku I wasnt talking about miles morales because thats sales across ps4 and ps5.
no way ratchet and clank rift apart sells 10 million units that would mean it sold 3x more than the best selling ratchet game
@trev666 uncharted 4 sold about 3x the previous series best, and God of War was similar.
Miles morales sales trajectory is an example to show how sales will be more elongated, especially so for PS5 only.
Those ratchet sales are for less than one month, at £$70, and with an install base of PS5s at 10m.
@blinx01 Returnal selling over 500k in 2 and half months isn’t bad for a hard rogue lite game. Returnal probably took about 20 million to make the 70$ price tag was put on the game because Sony probably felt it was worth that asking price.
@blinx01 is value determined solely by how much something costs to make? How much for the Mona Lisa then? Are cinema tickets for Indy films cheaper than blockbusters?
Very nice.
I love console hardware and I'm a fan of the ownership model when it comes to my games, be it digital or physical, so it's great to see these numbers.
Dayum that's hugh numbers right there.
Astros Playroom selling 10 million is mind blowing.
Spider-Man is Spider-Man, I guess. Ratchet already passing a million? It'll definitely have legs to sell some more millions.
And Returnal over 500k is incredible. Where are all the people saying nobody buying games for 70?
I'd really like to know Sackboy and Demon's Souls sell figures too. 2 outstanding games.
Big respect to Sony and team for that incredible work.
Launching an outstanding hardware with such strong software support throughout the year so far. Can't wait for HFW.
Come on Sony, show the sales figures for Sackboy too. Don't be shy.
Considering the install base, Returnal's sales are very good for a Roguelike.
@ChrisDeku
The point was if just over 500k is a success for a Sony game in the first 2 months, vs Rift Apart selling 1.1m units in 2 and half weeks, then clearly the game must have been much lower budget.
If that means it should have been less than £70 is a totally different question.
@JAMes-BroWWWn
Astro's Playroom comes with the PS5, which SIE announced has broken 10 million sales, so that would explain that.
However 6.5 million copies of Miles Morales is an insane sales figure out of those 10 million PS5's sold.
Two thirds of PS5 owners bought it, wow!
@trev666 Your wrong it will sale 10+ mil !
PS5-only titles have it rough. With the few existing units of the console being mostly in the hands of scalpers, even the people who'd like to buy and play them can't. No wonder big hitters like Ragnarok are still targeting last gen.
@Futureshark Miles Morales released on PS4 as well, and I'm pretty sure those are overall software sales.
@Gaia093 the scalpers probably have a few hundred thousand consoles most of ps5 stocks were sold to consumers.
Curious about demon’s souls sales
@Gaia093
Good point!
I stand corrected (said the man in the orthopedic shoes).
come on people, buy Demon's Souls!
@Enigk I'd argue that darts isn't even a sport, despite that it's shown on sports channels and declared a sport by some sports authority.
There's no tactics or offensive/defensive strategies. Your opponent just stands and watches, it's a pub game.
Unpopular opiion but, put the ability to save between biomes in Returnal and it will sell a lot more.
@blinx01 They didn't say anything about sales. They said the game was a success or something like that, but Sony has already said that there is more to a game's success than sales. Sony also really wants their games to get good reviews and win awards, because it helps build their image as the best place to play.
Days Gone, for instance, didn't get a sequel, not per se because of sales, but mixed reception was a big factor.
Also, Sony can afford to not make a huge profit on launch games, even take a loss, if it means these games lure gamers to the platform.
So, yea, you're simplifying things too much.
@eltomo I agree. It's a game rather than a sport. Next thing they'll class Monopoly as a sport. I also take issue with the term esports but I am not in charge of such things so let them crack on with whatever they want to call things and I won't lose any sleep over it.
Of course it has higher engagement. You bothered to make it backwards compatable this time.
Engagement is a terrible metric.
@Kidfried
They called the game a "mega-hit" and purchased the studio afterwards.
We can talk about what Sony class as a "mega-hit" all day, but I can only assume the game sold well enough for them in their eyes for the budget it received.
Sony aren't in the business of losing money on games.
The reason Days Gone didn't get a sequel is because it didn't sell enough games at launch at full price.
Here's a quote from the director;
"If you love a game, buy it at f***g full price", and implied that part of the reason Days Gone did not receive a sequel was because it did not turn a significant enough profit.
@blinx01 You're taking the man's, (who's not working at Bend anymore anyway!) words out of context. He never said that, that's your interpretation.
And Sony will of course call Returnal a mega-hit in some PR piece. But they didn't share if it was profitable. And like I said, Days Gone was profitable, but low review scores hurt the chances of a sequel. Read the Bloomberg report.
Numbers are fantastic for the number of PS5 consoles out there.
By next year ratchet will be close to 10 million units and Returnal close to 2-3 million units.
@koffing For me, it's the faster load times. It's so easy to bounce between games now. It no longer feels like a commitment; you just open the game and within 10 seconds you're in.
@Athrum I want to finish the game so bad, but throwing away hours on a run just to get nowhere is so demoralizing. Aside from that, it's such a fantastic game.
@Athrum
One of the major themes in the game is how a focused obsession can take over and negatively effect someone's life, and that such might even happen to a player of Returnal.
I genuinely think they haven't added saving because it compromises the artistic vision. If the only way to beat it is to do so in one sitting then players will get overly engrossed, which is what the developers are trying to express.
@blinx01 I think lack of saves hurt Returnal, it's very tightly focused , not for most shooter fans , 560k sales isn't really that high.
PS5 has done an amazing job to sell £10million consoles in a regular year let alone the last horrible 18 months the whole world has faced. Hats off because it's genuinely impressive to have the fastest selling PlayStation ever during a global pandemic. Although I still refuse to buy one until it gets slimmer and prettier. 😉
But, and I've said this before, Microsoft aren't interested in how many consoles they sell. It really doesn't matter to them at all. They want people in their ecosystem. GamePass is on PC, phones and soon to be every major TV brand. Console is a tiny part of their plan and is exclusively for the hardcore who want physical media and non-streaming. Xbox is a gaming brand and not a console anymore.
Sony will continue to shout about hardware sold but whether you like it or not, eventually, PS, Nintendo and Xbox will solely be apps to which you subscribe to play content on whatever screen you choose. Something, as a collector, I'm not happy about by the way. 😟
@ChrisDeku I like your optimism, but Ratchet is not selling 10m lifetime. It just doesn't have that selling power like Spider-Man. I can see it hitting somewhere around 3-5m. That's possible.
