As someone who played Shadow of the Tomb Raider and found it relatively enjoyable earlier in the year, it’s nice to see Square Enix take the time to update the title for PlayStation 5 backwards compatibility. While we’re still waiting for Sony to patch key PlayStation exclusives like Uncharted, the Japanese publisher has rolled out v2.01 for Lara Croft’s South American romp which allows the title to run at 4K in 60 frames-per-second.
Previously, the options were a little bit limited on Sony’s next-gen console. You could run the game at 60 frames-per-second, but had to drop the resolution all the way down to 1080p to do so. Alternatively, all of the 4K modes were capped at 30 frames-per-second. This allows you to get the best of both worlds on PS5, which is great news if you’re yet to take the trip to Paititi yet.
If you’re looking for a list of more PS4 games enhanced through backwards compatibility, then some of the best examples of PS5 Game Boost are through the link.

So putting the game in high Res 4k 'quality' mode now also runs at 60fps too?
SotTR just got bumped up my backlog pile!
Wish Rise got this too. I got 100% trophies for this game but Rise still needs cleaning up
Already a beautiful game, can’t wait till I can actually obtain a PS5 grrrrrr
patches for Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne would be my main wish.
I hope these patches will keep coming. Glad to see two games from backlog getting 60fps 4k just today.
I’m so surprised to see publishers doing this with older games. Surely they’re not making any money on this game anymore. Not complaining — just surprised! And pleasantly so! Maybe I’ll go back and mop up trophies and finally play DLC here
Awesome, I'm one of the few who genuinely enjoyed this game and will love revisiting it on PS5 with these upgrades. Disappointed the PS5 can't play PS1 or 2 discs but as far as PS4 backwards compatibility, it's become an excellent machine for that.
@Arnna same here can't wait until I finally can get one hopefully soon!
@Arnna DS3 should run at 60fps on PS5 - it got a PS4 Pro patch a while ago that unlocked the frame rate. I believe it ran in the upper 40’s or so on the Pro, so with the 2.5x multiplier in power on PS5 compared to the Pro, it should run at a locked 60fps @ 1080p.
Series X got a FPS Boost for DS3, but it’s capped at 900p as that is what the X1 version ran.
Played this game right at the start of the pandemic. Was a very odd time of uncertainty and fear but also being able to fully immerse myself in this game because of it. I don't think I'll ever forget this game now and will forever tie this experience in with the terrible year that was 2020 🤔
It was something I planned on revisiting on my PS5 regardless (played it on Xbox when it came out and was mildly disappointed), so this is very welcomed and unexpected. I've always wanted to give it a second chance given how much I loved the first two, and now it will look and play fantastically.
I just gotta ask , whats the point of doing these kinds of things to old games when devs could be doing something else better ..
like , who really cares .
I just can't get excited about games I've already beaten getting a few upgrades. Better than Director's Cuts and $10 upgrades, but still.....I'm sick of getting new consoles for 80% of the library to be games I played the prior generation! Or upgrades to old stuff, its just so boring!
I’m in the mood to go back and play this game again.
@nomither6 Well a lot of people care and it's not like this is stopping them from making games.
@TechaNinja The First One As Well As i Feel That One Needs It The Most
@Gamer83 I played it last summer and thought it was really good, so good I was surprised that iy received such mediocre reviews. Another case for me where the mainline critics got it wrong.
It looks and plays wonderful, some really good puzzles/tombs, good score and combat and an exciting story. Maybe the characterisations and scripts aren't in the same class as the Uncharted games but I found the new Lara Croft trilogy to be well worth playing.
@Nepp67 if you say so . i know theres people that care , but i wouldn't of thought its a lot .
I don’t have great memories of playing shadow but I think it’s because I played all 3 back to back and was really sick of Lara Croft by the end of it. It’s coming up to 3 years since I played it so it might be worth a revisit on its own.
Thanks for the heads up on this, it’s only 12.99 for definitive version. Downloading now.
This probably signifies their intention of giving it away with ps plus in the near future. Or maybe going on gamepass.
@ChrisDeku It Already Was a PS Plus Title Back In January.
@Th3solution I imagine they are working on newer titles, and finding the solutions to get 4K 60fps then being able to convert those skills quickly into older titles… as a easier way to test it out instead of on a complete new game
@Col_McCafferty
My favorite Tomb Raider games are still Legend, Underworld and Anniversary (in that order) but I loved the new trilogy as well. Rise is my favorite but 2013 and Shadow are also great games. I'd actually say I enjoyed all 3 of those games more than Uncharted 4.
@nomither6 its probably a lot more than you would like to think..
Nice to have, shame I already did this with pc over a year ago. It's a good game but the weakest of the 3 I feel. Good price on psn.
I loved playing these games in 3d on pc. Shame that didn't really catch on as adventure games like this benefited greatly from it.
So good. Started the game on PS4 pro but haven’t finished it. Now it’s on my PS5 since months with all dlc and updates.
Happy to finish it now with a higher resolution.
Difference on my 55“ tv is not groundbreaking to be honest but overall it’s sharper.
Oh sweet, really enjoyed Shadow, I might have to give it a little replay. I wish Alien Isolation would get a little bump up patch, I know its unlikely but I can dream
This was an excellent game. Possibly my favourite of the reboot trilogy. Deserved way more credit than it got
Shadow was brilliant but the dlc tombs are a must. With the extra tombs, it’s easily my favourite of the three ‘reboot’ games.
@ATaco I did exactly the same but with RDR2. I’ll never forget that game now.
@Gamer83 TR:Legend is still one of my favourites too. It had a brilliant atmosphere and an incredible soundtrack (second only to the very first Tomb Raider soundtrack).
Anniversary was another gem.
Underworld I don’t really remember as much as the others. I think Uncharted may have upstaged it a little at the time.
I’d love them to release a remastered collection of these games. I know we got one on the PS3 but I’d definitely buy it again on PS4/5.
I’d also love a remake Angel of Darkness. It was a bit of a mess on PS2 but it had a great story and some unique ideas for a TR game. I know it will never happen but if they completely overhauled the gameplay it would be a pretty solid game.
@nomither6 As you can see from the comments of this small subsection of Playstation gamers, people do care. And if I'm a developer that worked long and hard on a game, I'd put in a little extra time to make it look and play beautifully for the new generation of consoles. Finally, the game is still selling physical and digital copies, so a relatively small project like FPS boost at 4K resolution will produce a lot of new sales and bring the game back into focus for a lot of people.
So does it need to be installed on the PS5s SSD to take advantage of this or will it run from a connected HDD and still have these features?
@Th3solution
In a way it's encouraged people who havent yet played these games to give them a whirl even if it's just to see what the games like with higher frame rates.
Oh this sounds very cool. Finished the first one, thought it was great, played about half of Rise and it was great as well. Then got distracted by other games. I did like how even though the first one was linear, Rise was a bit more open with large areas to explore, find missions, etc. Does this one have open-worldy areas as well?
I should finish the 2nd one, but getting this one may be a priority
@frankmcma
I'd say Shadows area is more like Rise personally.
That funny I literally just re-downloaded the whole trilogy last night before going to bed! I still have a few DLC tombs to clean up that I never got around to so this is literally perfect timing. Will have to hop on some time soon.
Great news.
People needing to buy their entire collection over each generation needed to end. The extended value this upgrade cycle is amazing.
@fR_eeBritney
The Legend era Tomb Raider games remastered for PS5 with the same exact content but updated controls to play more like the reboot trilogy would be an easy day one buy for me.
already tried it and it looks amazing , i still need to finish this game up so this gives me a reason to.
Ah, this could be what all the "Optimised on Series X" stuff is all about on Team Green yesterday.
@Th3solution
If it's something simple like just unlocking the frame rate to 60FPS, it involves minimal effort from the developer and can lead to some extra sales from PS5 owners that might not already own the game.
You’re very conspicuously using “backwards comparability” incorrectly. This would be forward or upward compatibility.
@GamingFan4Lyf cheers for the info
@figboot it’s backwards compatibility if you’re using a PS5 it just has perks too.
Haven’t played this before, despite buying it in a sale she’s ago - installed it on the PS5 last night and it’s stunningly good looking on my OLED C1, and fantastically smooth. Huge thanks to the folks who pushed this update out - I’ve been playing it all day!
@nomither6 shall we apply that logic to every game that gets patched for PS5?
@carlos82 I suggest it .
Good for them.
Still waiting for a similar Bloodborne patch.
@DM666 The graphics and framerate will take advantage of PS5 hardware still but load times won't be quite as fast as SSD allows for. Love the King Crimson thumbnail.
@TJ81 Cheers, prog rock fan right here!
@Futureshark Can't believe you haven't played it yet. Jelly. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a selective memory wipe, so you could play classical games all over again for the first time? Would love to play Zelda LttP all over again.
Shame it's not a legit next-gen upgrade/remaster, but I'll take what I can get lol.
@nomither6 it's perfect for me, I still haven't played it. This makes me want to play it, and there many like me I'm sure.
@Arnna Bloodborne deserves the full Blue Point treatment, it will sell like crazy.
@TJ81 not the full power of Ps5 because Shadow is still only running in backwards compatibility mode.
Nevertheless it runs with pretty solid 60 fps.
@SlySnake0407 I think by Japanese publisher, they're referring to Square Enix. Can't really call Playstation a Japanese publisher any more.
Sony don't publish upgrades as you say but they do own Naughty Dog so could ask them to upgrade the Nathan Drake Collection, Thief's End and Lost Legacy to do something extra on PS5 - depends on their workload to be fair (another remix of Last of Us, probably!)
Completed this on PS Now. Nice to see this kind of service to older games ...
Cool, gives me an excuse to go back and Platinum the game. While it wasn't as good as the 1st two, I enjoyed it. Particularly the larger focus on puzzles over combat, I missed that about Lara Croft.
Although, I did find it a bit funny that by the end of the game I actually wanted more combat, just to put the new stealth mechanics to more use.
