If you've read our Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut review, you'll already know that we're big fans of the new Iki Island expansion. We'd go as far to say that Jin's new offshore adventure is worth the price of admission alone — but the reality of the situation isn't so simple. Having played the entirety of the expansion on PlayStation 5, there's no question that Sony is overcharging for the next-gen upgrade — and it's not a good look.
This whole debate exploded back when Director's Cut was first announced. We penned a surprisingly controversial reaction article, saying that Sony's approach to this particular upgrade was all wrong — and now, we feel like that initial take has been validated. Simply put, Sony shouldn't be charging extra for Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut's PS4 to PS5 upgrade.
The following features are exclusive to Director's Cut on PS5:
- Slightly higher resolution
- Instant load times
- DualSense controller haptic feedback
- Full Japanese lip sync
Essentially, Sony is saying that these exclusive features are worth the extra dosh. And to be fair, the haptic feedback is pretty cool (as noted in our review). But there's no getting away from the fact that other developers have implemented similar PS5 updates for free. Heck, some studios have gone above and beyond; Metro Exodus received haptic feedback and a complete graphical overhaul with its PS5 upgrade, and players didn't have to pay a penny if they already owned the game on PS4. And that's just one example of many.
The bottom line is that we're perfectly fine with paying for the Iki Island expansion — it's excellent. But if you want to upgrade Ghost of Tsushima PS4 to Director's Cut PS5, you're forced to pay an extra $10 (it costs $19.99 to upgrade from PS4 to PS4). Sony is squeezing wallets here, and it's very hard to justify.
Indeed, the tech heads at Digital Foundry agree. In their latest video, they go over everything that Director's Cut does on PS5, and they arrive at the same conclusion. Unless you really care about that haptic feedback — or the full Japanese lip sync — then you might as well just grab Director's Cut on PS4 for $10 less.
So what do you think? Should Sony be charging for these PS5 exclusive features, in a world where other companies are doing more for free? Don't be a ghost in the comments section below.

Couldn't agree more! The need to pay extra, just to use the features of the console I've forked out £450 for is just..........eh
I couldn’t agree more!
The price may not be justified but surely at the same time, there are players out there who will pay for this so why shouldn't Sony charge for the upgrade? If other companies want to give upgrades away for free then great, it benefits consumers but not necessarily the company themselves (except maybe PR).
As a consumer we have the right not to buy or wait until the price inevitably drops and buy it then.
Not a fan of a game, so it doesn't really bother me that much as I won't be playing it anyway. The pay wall for the upgrade is shameful tho and I am glad it doesn't go well with fan base.
Edit. There is some kind of 22gb patch for the game on my ps5 tho. I didn't update it, but it prompt it for me yesterday in the evening. So, maybe they do upgrade some stuff for free? 22gb seems rather large patch.
I really don't understand why the stance that Sony is nickel-and-diming their customers for minor upgrades is so controversial.
You’d think the company standing to gain the most from locking you into the PS5 ecosystem would be the ones giving the upgrades out for free. Sony’s been doing some strange stuff. I miss the fun times of 2009-early PS4
As mentioned above I couldn't agree more.
I really want this. Love GoT and got the Plat on it. But I'm gonna vote with my wallet and wait to get it until it's a bit cheaper.
I very much disagree. Paying $10 for a PS5 upgrade is more than reasonable. The upgrade doesn't just happen with the click of a button. Real people do real work and get paid real money to make the upgrade possible. The upgrade costs time and money.
Why do people feel so entitled that they should get the upgrade for free just because they previously bought the original version?
I understand the norms of the market but I don't think I will ever feel right with saying "You need to do this work for free." I will agree that it would benefit Sony from a goodwill perspective as it does for the other companies that do it. But if they choose not to because they want to charge you for the extra work, to me, that is just a break even situation.
The only reason I won’t be playing Iki island is the fact that I don’t want to support this practice :3
@bpomber Because this game doesn't exist in a vacuum, and there are companies with a lot less resources than Sony who are providing their customers with better upgrades at no extra cost.
If they can do it, then Sony definitely can.
Instead, they've chosen to nickel-and-dime their most loyal customers, which opens them up to reasonable criticism like what's written above.
Yeah I'm fine playing the PS4 version of the expansion on PS5. There's one big problem though, Hades just came out and it's consuming my game playing life.
They aren't squeezing wallets for the sake of it.
The reality is they just wanted an excuse to have a PS5 physical release on store shelves since all other first party games have been delayed for the rest of the year.
They've offered free upgrades in the past for Spiderman MM, Sackboy, etc.
This is the only reason they have changed tune for this Director's Cut and Death Stranding.
On this topic, I think I've ultimately decided to play the DLC with the PS4 BC version.
@Hobbesyall You can still play the Iki Island expansion by buying the PS4 DLC. This will save you money and you'll still get a great experience through BC.
I didn’t like the idea of the $10 charge to begin with but now, knowing how little was added to the “upgrade”, I think it looks really bad and I certainly won’t be paying for it. Too many other games have had so much more done for free. This just looks lazy in comparison to games like Metro and Doom Eternal. I may have sucked it up if it was a “wow” type upgrade (and I see the other two free ones I mentioned as very much “wow” in their improvements). But, here the fee just feels like a cash grab with very little in return.
Charging for DLC: OK
Charging for upgrade: Not OK.
I don't get why this is a drama. If you don't think it's worth it then you shouldn't buy it. If you do then do. To me this is more than what other companies are doing as a next gen upgrade - they already did that for free. This is something a bit different and so they feel comfortable charging for it.
I'd like to play it again and jump in the new island but I don't want to pay for the PS5 upgrade. Really want the DualSense controller haptic feedback so I decided I will wait for a sale. If the PS5 upgrade price doesn't drop, then I will just have to settle for the PS4 upgrade instead becaue I'm really not going to pay that extra 10er
Maybe it should of come out cheaper I think. Say £49.99 for the PS5 version considering it only came out last year on PS4 + Death Stranding DC is going to be cheaper to. Anyway I will get this soon when price goes a bit lower
nope wont be supporting charging for such a minor upgrade
Yeah, I always thought the idea of these re-releases/upgrades was to bring new players on board, not to squeeze the players who already bought/supported it out of even more cash. What should have been a nice gesture has turned into a cynical cash grab. Not that it affects me really - I don’t even have a PS5. But, I woke up in a bad mood so... sorry Sony, you’re gonna get it 😁
Sammy, forgive my ignorance, but I'm very confused right now. When I check Ghost of Tsushima's page on my PS4 right now there's only one expansion option: the Director's Cut upgrade, which includes the Iki Island Expansion. There's no mention of a second purchase of a PS5 upgrade. Is it because I'm checking on PS4?
I bought the retail version on the PS4 and I’ve just bought the retail version on the PS5. More than happy to pay for it again. Amazing game.
I will be playing the PS4 version of the DLC, I still can't believe they did basically nothing with the graphics. Are Insomniac or the Metro guys just that much talented or maybe they had a deadline and didn't have time? Ghost is still one of my favorite games of last gen so I can't wait to play the dlc at least.
@Tulio517 That's most likely it, you can't really buy PS5 games on a PS4.
What it's £10 for Ghost of Tsushima PS4 to Director's Cut PS5?!?! Mines saying £24.99 😞
Agree, sony seems stingy for asking money for ps5 upgrade while other developers, even their competitors (microsoft id software), gave their games free upgrade (doom eternal ps5 upgrade).
Oh well, at least the upgrade is only $10.
I just finished the Iki island main story (PS4 version) on PS5 and was pretty good! Will spend still some hours more to explore the rest of the island and do all the side content.
I won't be supporting this money farm and greed from sony! Getting the upgrade just for the sake of the dualsense features, it's just a joke.. when you already bought the hardware to utilize that!
What is the most ridiculous is that the biggest upgrade was already been given for free - the 60FPS!! Pretty much it's a charge just for the dualsense features, even the loadings are almost none on the PS4 version installed on the internal SSD of the PS5, and the resolution it's almost unnoticeable - a slighly boost from 1800p to 2160p.
If there wasn't a 60FPS upgrade free till now, and they would include it now on this 10€ upgrade would make more sense and "less exposed to greed". But still.. would be still a money grab! We see so many upgrades been given for free for much smaller studios. And look at Spiderman Miles Morales, u get 60FPS, RT, Performance RT for free! This move/strategy from Sony just didn't fell really good..
I don't like it either but let's be realistic here ...
First of all this is an opinion not news lol.
And second, they aren't charging 10 for fps or resolution (so whatever df says doesn't matter lol) they are charging for the dual sense and 3d audio stuff and that from a developer perspective takes more time (and more money) to do than just making it look better.
So basically it makes sense but it doesn't look good because not a lot of people are interested in that part of the ps5 experience and while they will make some games look better for free like ratchet and c. they will charge for updates in games they believe will be better with the new part of the experience.
@The_Moose They shouldn’t just because they can. Goodwill goes a long way in this industry, and Sony is squandering theirs.
While I should have voted with my wallet and just got the PS4 expansion, I did ultimate decide to take the PS5 upgrade route.
Call it simple laziness on my part as I just clicked on the upgrade link after inserting the disc and went with it. I am kind of kicking myself a little now. I really should have saved the $10.
The lack of Japanese lip-syncing annoyed me on initial release, so I guess that's something to look forward to.
@Kieren1234 Can't speak for our region, but in North America it's $19.99 to upgrade to PS4 Director's Cut and $29.99 to upgrade from PS4 to PS5. If you buy the Director's Cut outright for PS4, you pay $10 to upgrade to the PS5 Director's Cut. That's where the $10 tax comes from.
This is more of an opinion piece then an actual news article which gives the impression Sony charging for any upgrade is factually wrong when it's a subjective business decision.
@get2sammyb 100% Sony can give PS5 upgrades for free. In my opinion that doesn't mean they should.
The thought in life of "others do it this way so I should too" has never made sense to me, and it's the same in this situation. Where's the innovation in that type of thinking? Who knows, maybe Sony will be using the extra profit from the $10 upgrade to invest in more outstanding exclusives in the future, which will provide the consumer with more great content and set them apart from their competition. That would be a luxury that their competition doesn't have because they gave away upgrades for free.
I think most people on this site will agree that Sony puts out more quality exclusives than any other company. I would think Sony's resources that are allowing them to continue to put out great content are a result of their business practices, such as the one in question here.
It's the consumer's right to not purchase something if they see no value in it, just as much as it's the company's right to charge for their product.
@dudeAmarillo The game already had 3D Audio even on PS4. So while it may have improved on PS5, we aren't talking about any drastic changes.
The ONLY thing that I guess could justify the upgrade fee is the change to cutscenes being in real-time and having to go through the entire game to make sure Japanese lip-syncing matched. Even that is a stretch.
@Spiders
I highly doubt anyone will stop buying Sony products because they charge consumers for upgrades.
I mean people who even just wanna buy the PS4 version have to pay £60 for A YEAR OLD GAME, because you just decided to remove the base version completely. Ridiculous! I've lost interest.
Doom Eternal added at not extra cost:
1800/60 with Ray-tracing
4k/60 or
1584p/120fps
Dualsense support
ultra quality graphics
That's allot more work put in by a Microsoft owned studio 😶
This really be an opinion / soapbox piece; otherwise it has no right using the words “should/shouldn’t” as it’s driven totally be the author’s viewpoint.
It’s a complex argument; on the one hand publishers have been reselling upgraded releases of previous-gen games for years and you could argue that if you are creating an enhanced product, then you have every right to sell it for a price if you desire.
What has happened in this case is that other publishers have set a precedent of expectations by offering free updates. It seems Sony decided on a different path. Some see it as being greedy, others seeing as common sense business. At the end of the day, opinions and views are going to differ, but there is no “right or wrong way”.
Some people don’t bat an eye about paying $1000 or more for a next gen console. Heck, even one of my co-workers who has no business spending like that, dropped $1000 on one from Walmart last week. If people are willing to pay the cost, you can’t blame Sony for setting the price.
@GamingFan4Lyf and the dual sense part* let's no forget that because every cool thing takes a hell of a time for devs and the new rumble experience is really really cool. And as i said i don't like it either and i don't think they should but it makes sense
No way I’m coughing up the extra 10, the only greed I like is GreedFall! 😷
I don't know guys. Nintendo gets away with charging full price for Super Mario 3D World + Bowsers Fury and we are bellyaching about $10. Plus if you really don't want to spend 10 more bucks, you don't even have to! You can still get the expansion and a well done backwards compatibility version for $20.
I like sticking it to the man as much as the next guy but this just feels kinda petty in my opinion.
@The_New_Butler
If you play cross platform there is obviously a reason you are playing Sony games/platforms because they have something you want.
You don't have to take anything what any company does, you can go to a competitor or as you've hinted at buy it at a cheaper price. Why do you care that you can't play the PS5 upgrade straight away for free?
There's loads of games on PS4/PS5 and other gens to keep you busy. The catalogue will only get bigger which will cause GoT at least to drop in price.
If you don't want to pay for the upgrade then don't. There are thousands of gamers who will buy it though.
Agreed, much as i loved the first game they can keep this overpriced PS5 sting
I totally agree, but it kinda seems like this article should fall under "Soapbox", not "News."
Is the complaint that the PS5 version is more than the PS4 version, or that it costs any money at all to upgrade? If it's the former that's a fair complaint, but if it's the latter I think that's entitled - they've made some quality DLC and are charging for it.
Even the latest Zelda charged for a higher difficulty mode, so Sony's competitors aren't completely innocent.
I agree. Personally, it's not a problem to pay an extra 10 bucks but on other hand, as someone pointed out, I don't want to support this practice.
My autumn is already stocked with games so I might as well wait this one out and see if there's a price drop.
The PS4 to PS5 upgrade should be free but your paying for the Iki Island content which I have no issue with
Yeah, this should have been a free upgrade. As much as I love the game, can't support such behavior with purchase :/
Shouldn't this be labeled "SOAPBOX" rather than "NEWS"? Don't stone me - just asking.
@art_of_the_kill Sorry - didn't read the comments before I made mine. I agree
@FX102A If I had read the comments I wouldn't have posted. Ah well. Last time I do that I guess. I agree with ya.
Happy to pay it if it helps to increase the likely hood of getting a 2nd full game.
I'm not going to pay for the upgrade so I wait till the total price for the PS5 version is below 20 euro as I think that is worth it. I'm not going to support these kind of practices.
@Nexozi Do you really think that extra $10 is going to make it so Sony can afford to make Ghost of Tsushima 2? I hope your being sarcastic.
May have been worth it for the retriggering of every trophy I earned first time out. It was one of the few platinums I bothered with..
@The_Moose Don’t be so sure. It’s one thing when they’re dominating the market. It’s another when their main competition is going the opposite direction with value.
I don’t want to tell anyone what the value of their dollar is, but you have to look at it a little objectively — paying $30 to play a title you already played again with marginal improvements is a sucker’s game, especially with what you can get for that price in other places.
Imagine complaining about a $10 upgrade like you people in the same breathe don’t speak $15 on junk food or crap on Uber eats. Pathetic
I can forgive it for this game, only on how much I love it and they gave legends free, I do understand the grumpyness tho.
Does this really warrant an extra article?
Couldn't agree more.
But I can't help but notice how it's "not okay" to criticize Sony, according to certain Push Square users, whereas the same people would immediately jump on the Microsoft hate train without second thought.
I get it, this is a Playstation centric website but that DOESN'T mean we shouldn't be vocal about blatant anti consumer practices!
Remember everyone, companies are not your friends.
Yeah this is absolutely greed and nothing more. There is no justification on a consumer end to say something along the lines of "hey someone will buy it so why shouldn't they charge that for it?!"
That type of mentality is exactly why these types of behaviors continue to take place and why we see such a prevalence of all the greed-based implementations in the gaming industry today.
If you conform and do not at the very least with your wallet, you are an inherent part of this problem, and likely the problem with conformity to the enslavement of humanity as a whole.
Good luck with that
@Jarobusa lol They're not going to make a new game just counting up who is willing to buy the PS5 update. What they are going to look at is overall sales. Sales is how most 2nd games are given the green light. If you want an recent example just look at Days Gone. No second game as it didn't sell enough. For what they've done I'm happy to pay the extra. It's probably my favourite game ever, so anything extra I want it.
Seems like alot of people here works for free.
If you get paid for your work than maybe tell your boss that you want to work around 50 hours for free, so your companys costumers can get stuff for free.
@Spiders
"paying $30 to play a title you already played again with marginal improvements is a sucker’s game, especially with what you can get for that price in other places."
Couldn't agree more. That's why I won't be buying it. I don't blame Sony either for charging because they needed to pay staff to pull off those upgrades and they know people will buy them.
We can just play whatever else in the meantime until titles like GoT become cheaper.
@The_New_Butler
"What I care about is the fact that Sony are charging a fee for minimal upgrades and is essentially charging money for a patch."
Fair enough but it's up to them and the fact that other gamers will buy it is motivation for Sony to charge. If a company can make money from people by doing something they'll do it. Just the way it is.
I am assuming devs are paid the same rates for free upgrades? Since there is often a heck of a lot of code tweaks for even small upgrades, not to mention bugs. Either way I'm fine with whichever way works best for the Devs that make the games both in short term and long term.
@Nexozi so the millions of copies that sold on PS4 is not enough to let Sony know to make a new game? But it all depends on how many pay $10 for the PS5 upgrade? lol. Sure.
@The_Moose ". ... I don't blame Sony either for charging because they needed to pay staff to pull off those upgrades and they know people will buy them."
PlayStation 5 is selling at a record amount, but they do not have enough money to pay their developers to add a few new features to a game, that has sold in the millions?
But a small company (compared to Sony) can make huge PS5 upgrades (Metro) can afford it?
@Jarobusa You either don't bother reading or are just a troll.
@Jarobusa
Affordability doesn't really come into it. Could Sony afford to give this update away for free? Certainly. Why should they though if people are going to buy it? It's a company not a charity after all.
I'm sure the company behind Metro will have good PR but it will be forgotten quite quickly.
@Nexozi So the millions of sales on PS4 is not enough to justify a second game? But for a second game to be developed it all depends on how many people upgrade to the PS5 version (in addition to the millions already sold)?
How is this trolling? It is a legit question.
@The_New_Butler
Apology or not, it's logic.
If they give stuff away for free then why should they charge you for anything? You could just apply the "but I'm a loyal customer" rule to absolutely anything.
I've been eating Walker's Crisps all my life but I've never had a free bag off them.
@The_Moose The question is the $10 extra worth all of the negative press?
@The_Moose but other companies give away free updates. It makes Sony look greedy.
@Jarobusa
All the negative press will be forgotten. Charging for this upgrade will not go down in the history books as some great betrayal.
R* have charged people for the same iteration of GTAV 3x over and it's still regularly in the top 10 selling games charts (combined with online).
Being charged for a product isn't as big a deal as you think it is. Yeah it can be a rip off some time but I can see both sides of the argument.
@Jarobusa
Maybe it does but they're not alone in charging people for a slightly better version of their product. How many times was CoD reskinned with a bit better better graphics and a new story every year. Was merely an upgrade when you think about it but it still sells.
Companies are there to make money, some value PR, some value the profit to invest back into the games. Just different ways of doing things.
@The_Moose I just hope Sony does not go down the path of Nintendo.
Paying full price for a game with very little improvement. Yes $10 is small, but if Sony sees people paying this amount what's to stop them from going for a lot more?
If the PS5 game disk has all the game on disk, ill just wait until I find a used copy for less than $20, I got a big backlog so I don’t mind if I need to wait a year for that. But I’m definitively going to try to get this one used, because I refuse to reward these tactics.
@Jarobusa Ok, so when did I say that? Considering the first line of my first response to you was:
They're not going to make a new game just counting up who is willing to buy the PS5 update.
@Jarobusa
We the consumer can stop them charging more. The more they hike up the prices the less people will buy the games and products, especially newly released.
@Gamer_Girl_
Spot on!
You'd think Sony were putting a gun to people's heads and telling them to buy their stuff.
Only the most hardcore Sony simps out there will be defending this. I’m fine paying for DLC, but not for an upgrade of a game I paid full price for at launch and supported when other companies are doing it for free.
Gears 5 did it right, released Hivebusters to buy while upgrading the original game for anyone for free, and more significant upgrades than in GoT I might add.
I loved GoT and platinumed it, I won’t be touching the expansion or upgrade as I don’t want to support this. Sony are doing their best to ruin any goodwill they showed throughout the PS4’s lifespan it seems.
I’ve bought both, but I have to say I wish I’d actually read up on what the ps5 upgrade included (and what it didn’t).
As far as paying for a ps5 upgrade when you already own the ps4 version of a game, $10 or so is fine. However, paying a full $70 for a ps5 game that has already been released on ps4 is totally insane. GoT Director's Cut should only be $39.99 max, just like Greedfall. $69.99 for GoT is criminal price gouging.
Worse of all they don't even allow you to buy the PS4 only version on ps5 and try to force you to buy the 50% more expensive version only!
I'm TRYING to make a point to them that while I think the expansion is worth $20 I DO NOT think that I should be 59% more just for haptics and real-time cut scenes (vs pre rendered on ps4).
Heck in some ways the ps5 version cut scenes look WORSE (and they still lock them to 30fps so it's not line they run better or something).
Sony really is truly telling their fans that "we own you and there's nothing you can do about it".
@The_Moose yea except for the fact that I WANT to NOT buy the extra ps5 version and yet I'm FORCED to if I try to buy just the PS4 version from my ps5 (which has the PS4 version already installed on).
Sony won't even let me speak with my wallet here its total bs!
@bpomber the "work" put into the iki island expansion is absolutely "worth" the asking cost of $20 but the "work" put into the barley anything upgrades of the "ps5 version is NOT worth 50% of the cost if the expansion itself. It's literally some haptics and instead of pre rendered cut scenes they let them run real time (and not even at a better frame rate like 60 but still locked to the pre rendered cut scenes 30 fps).
They also (the cut scenes) look worse in some regards.
There's no way the "value" is appropriate between the two.
Not to mention this is a SONY 1ST PARTY studio who GREATLY benefits from the people buying the new hardware (vs 3rd party studios making things like final fantasy 7 and metro exodus upgrades who literally make NOTHING from more people owning Sony hardware).
Yet THEY can go out of there way to reward their customers who just dropped a ton of money on new hardware and experience their games even better than before?
Lmao... anyone who see this as anything other than a cash grab from a company whose lost touch from being put in front too long is just billboarding their fanboy colors.
@FX102A when I a consumer who has the right to choose to support or not support this practice are FORCED to take the upgrade along with the expansion (when I bought the PS4 version and have the PS4 version installed and yet when I TRY to go buy the PS4 only expansion it's no where to be found on the store from my ps5 (only the $29.99 version and NOTHING else) then yes I have a right to complain.
I want to speak with my wallet and Sony will not let me!
@Korgon please tell me how on earth from my ps5 do I go about "getting the $20 version"?
It no where to be found on the store from my ps5 Ive searched high and low and it's only the $29.99 version as the ONLY option.
@The_New_Butler Sony has already burned me too much for me to support them fully... Like you I own all the consoles and even have a very high end pc ( 3080ti / 10900k 8tb of ssd / nvme and 24tb of hdd along with full custom water cooling).
Money ISN'T the issue. It's respecting me as a customer/fan.... And they just don't.
They haven't for a long time and it's why I ONLY play the must play 1st party games on their systems and NOTHING else.
I also started in the last year or so just buying them day 1 beating / platinuming them followed quickly buy selling them off at nearly what I paid for them.
I won't let Sony profit a penny more than I have to if they are going to continue to act like just because they DIDN'T screw up like MS last go round that they are in Infallible.
I pay for their overpriced hardware because I have to but I don't have to give them anything much beyond that and whenever I can I won't.... Not til they start seeing their fans as anything other than a cow to milk.
@Neverwild bs... Sony (the hardware manufacturer and OWNER of this studio could EASILY off set the extra cost of the "work" done by these developers whose game (and this extra content they create is going to drive at least some to want to spend the $400-500 for the system to play it on.
Sony has already said how the systems already profitable and we KNOW they buy and create studios (and pay them to drive more growth of the buying of said hardware).
So there absolutely no reason to act like the devs would have to do this work for free. They would absolutely still get paid and the "cost" to Sony would only he a marginal increase to their "marketing" spend.
Don't try to act like this is some lowly independent development studio just trying to survive and could benefit from some extra funds.
NONE of the extra spend here is going to the actual devs who did the work it's straight going into Sonys piggy bank.
@The_Moose it may not be a "gun to the head" but as I WANT to speak with my wallet and not support the extra $10 upgrade and only buy the PS4 version of iki Island expansion yet NO where on my ps5 or from inside my ps4 version of the original game on my ps5 can I chose to get JUST the PS4 iki island expansion
The ONLY option anywhere on the console is the $29.99 version... So it may not be a "gun to the head" but it's close enough to say they pulling some very shady practices and I for one and NOT on with it.
@Cybrshrk
"but it's close enough to say they pulling some very shady practices and I for one and NOT on with it."
Well here's a crazy idea, don't buy it straight away. Let it drop in price, then buy it.
Daylight robbery!
I'm not against paying for game upgrades, expecting to get upgrades free forever is unrealistic, but yes, they have made this one overly complicated.
@Cybrshrk
It should show up in the add on section of the game. If not try the phone app it's there.
They definitely should have made the PS5 upgrade separate from Iki Island and free.
@The_Moose You pay €30 for a expansion and and the upgrade dont spread lies thats one thing.
@The_New_Butler Then again their games are always quality. Dont have massive issues on launch, complete so i never feel the expansion is something they held back. For me it should have been €30 for the expansion and you choose if you want it.
@Balosi They should have made it a €30 upgrade and thats it no two things. Then again if you dont like the upgrade you can get a 17 hours expansion for €20 for a expansion.
@Cybrshrk im not trying to be a dick here but they dont make money on a console. And then again i read on Twitter im buying it secondhand so thats zero money made and i was a free PS5 upgrade and expansion for €20. So it depends how you look at it. But thats my idea behind it and its probably the reason why we never get a complete physical edition anymore but downloadcodes. For me Playstation always gave me quality with games i love so as a customer that has been there from the start i never felt cheated so im happy to pay no DLC, no MT, no gold edition that says to me we are holding back stuff from the start.
@Tharsman I guess there is your answer why they go this route and lots of people buy it secondhand i now see why we get these terrible things like a SF5 game disc packed with DLC codes with no resell value.
"Not when other companies are doing it for free."
A half truth. AC Valhalla, Doom Eternal, immortal fenyx rising etc are free upgrades but your buying the DLC. Ghost of Tsushima Legends was completely free DLC that is still being updated with free content, other games like crash bandicoot 4 it's about time had no DLC but gave a free upgrade. Either way Ghost of Tsushima Legends DLC you can support or you don't, people support full price game's with microtransactions & battle-passes (battle-passes are a F2P model) the fuss over this is a bit odd.
Note to Sony don't give free DLC like Ghost of Tsushima Legends, put a price on it. As you can see no one is grateful for it in the age of F2P Battle Pass and microtransactions in full priced game's, like the standalone version you should have charged £15.99 for it. That way you get to make money while giving away a "free" upgrade. In this day & age people are simple what can I say?
My hot take is....
I couldn't give a *****. Pay or don't pay, that's your choice.
At least they upgraded the Framerate for free which is a darned sight more than GG have done for HZD. What are they waiting for?!
@Flaming_Kaiser I never ever buy used before. I will start now, only for games that do this.
@Tharsman I never did it plus everything is on the disc so ill be rewarding that to just bought the game this afternoon full price. Ubisoft games are useless for resale the same goes for fighters cheaper but no resale value.
People do forget the free multiplayer update the other free PS5 updates.
@The_Moose
-All the ones that did charge extra will NOT be forgotten (thinking twice before buying their game on day one anymore)
-All the ones who gave it as a service will NOT be forgotten (looking out for their new games)
I just bought the DLC for the PS4, that's enough for me. With a PS5 still being a mystery as to whether I'll ever own one there is no need to pay for any upgrades and if anyone does have a PS5 they shouldn't have to pay for updated versions of games by Sony. Bad form all around.
Here in Australia, the PS Store lists the PS4 edition for $110 and the PS5 edition for $125 (rounding both up the 5c to even dollars). The difference is less than a Crispy Bacon & Cheese burger on GF bun from Grill’d. Is that really worth the highly passionate comments here?
If Sony feel haptic feedback, spatial audio, and Japanese voice/sync rework should cost a burger (without fries or drink) that’s their decision as a business to make.
If I don’t want to forego a burger and make myself a cheese sandwich to experience those enhancements, that’s my decision as a consumer to make.
(And personally, buying any game over say $80 AUD is tough to swallow for me, so I’ll be waiting until it’s on sale regardless. Plenty of back catalogue to keep me going until then!)
I would pay for the upgrade because the game is fantastic and I want to support the studio, to deliver great adventures in the future. And they took no charge for the Legends online. This is my point of view. All Sony's exclusives are awesome and from my side, I will always support the studios as much as I can. PlayStation is the best way to be truly entertained. 😉🙂
It seems charging the difference in price between the PS4 and PS5 versions is how Sony prevents people paying $60 or less for the PS4 version instead of buying the $70 PS5 version.
I have actually paid for the upgrade which I believe cost £9 in my country and I love the features of the controller and the graphics upgrade. Real people have put time and effort into this and they should be rewarded iki Island and the additional features are a masterpiece in my opinion
I somewhat agree.
I actually wasn't that much against a $10 upgrade cost back when this was discussed, before this gen released.
But then again it may be hypocritical of me, because I will get the full PS5 game when my funds allow it (if they had, I would have pre-ordered it). Because I had been waiting for around 20 years for this kind of game, so I don't mind buying/support it again. This is also why I would say the upgrade should be free, because if there is but a small (large) enough group like me and also newcomers, which is going to be paying FULL price for the Director's Cut version, then that should be enough to offset the cost of the $10 upgrade.
Again it just seem like the corporation wants ALL the money instead of some of the money.
This IMO is a total money grab by SONY! PS5 games already cot $70.00 how in the hell can sony justify charging an extra $10.00 for a DLC ? Its mind boggling to me and makes me very resentful of sony. I knew when they first annunced the game prices going up on PS5 and Xbox that this was going to be the slipper slide towards making gaming unaffordable for many gamers.
