I don't get all these 'remasters'. Who's going to buy this on PS5 when they can get the PS4 version cheaper and get the 'free' upgrade. It's the same with Witcher 3. I don't know if they plan to sell the PS5/XSX version as it's own thing, but would would buy it when the PS4/XBO version is so cheap?
Nothing can really be done about insane levels of web traffic. Sites could increase server capacity but that’s expensive and would not be needed other than a few days every 6-7 years. They will sell out anyway so no need to bother.
Most of the PS5 issues were down to bad decisions though. Like giving almost no notice, and even then letting the news go out through social media influencers instead of being in their presentation.
It would not surprise me if they're still on PS5. Being able to say all those games are Day 1 on Game Pass is still a huge selling point.
I think the whining about it being anti-consumer is overboard. People say Xbox has no exclusives worth buy a console for, and MS are rectifying that. If anything, this just evens up the console race.
There's a fairly good chance they will still put games out on PS5. That is a LOT of money. Being able to put them all day 1 on game pass would still be a pretty major selling point for them, even if they are on PS5.
I’m pretty sure Sony couldn’t pull it off. I don’t know if MS can either but the way they handle backwards compatibility is promising. You can take a game that was made 20 years ago, when only the original Xbox existed, pop it in an Xbox One X or a Series X and each time it gets better. That’s purely hardware improving a game without any need for the developer to have done a thing.
I wish they'd just let us know how it all works. The way MS have demonstrated stuff just gives people confidence. Not just in backwards compatibility, but that crossgen won't hold things back. Take an original Xbox game and see how differently it runs on an original Xbox, compared to an Xbox One, and then a Series X. That's all using the original game with no tweaks. Bodes well for developers being able to scale up or down when they know in advance.
Another baffling situation! I don't want to pile on them too much because I think the PS5 is a great console, and it's clear the first party games will be amazing, but it's another example of them saying one thing and then making a u-turn.
I think Sony and MS are in almost the same position, but MS have handled it so much better. Both consoles are the same price, both consoles will have mostly stuff you can already play on your current console (at least Sony has some next-gen only stuff), and both are likely putting the price of a new game up.
Sony shouldn't have made a big deal out of next-gen is next-gen if they knew they were going to be putting so many of these games on PS4. MS said this was always their plan, but with Sony it feels like they've made a U turn.
Game Pass also makes the £70 (still can't believe that) price of a new game easier to swallow. Most people won't be buying MS first party games day 1 as they will be on Game Pass.
Another thing against Sony is the pre-order situation. They told people don't worry we'll give plenty of notice. Well, a lot of people will just get their news from a website once a day. They'll probably see the news about the price and date sometime today, but it sounds like pre-orders have already started this morning, and in some places last night?
As the article said, I also hate how little of the system features we know about. People have said they will put blog posts up about those in the coming weeks, but pre-orders are today. The whole backwards comparability situation seems really shady to me. Why are you telling us in your showcase that Fortnite is coming to PS5 when we already know everything on PS4 will be on PS5?
I wonder if they had to change their plans. I wouldn’t say devious is the word as now them making such a big deal out of it leaves them looking stupid. Don’t see why they’d have said all that stuff if they knew the games would be on PS4 too.
I can’t believe believe it’s been over 6 years since New N Tasty. I feel like they started talking about this one almost immediately after that came out.
I begrudged paying £30 for day 1 games in the PS2 era. I’ll now happily wait years for things to drop in price. Just recently bought Spider-Man for £9.
So now they’re dropping the pretty big news that most things are crossgen after all (Miles Morales, Horizon 2, Sack Boy etc). Why make a big deal of previously insisting in a clear jump to next gen?
The reality is, I guess anyone posting comments on a news site, or on a gaming forum is part of 10% of the gaming market at most, and probably a much smaller amount than that. All the things we get worked up about, or excited about, are largely irrelevant. Most people that buy games don't keep up with gaming news or reviews.
I think their plan would have been £/$499 for the disc console, and £/$449 for that digital, but it would not surprise me if after the S reveal they take a hit and drop the digital to £/$399.
I can't see too many new game announcements, but Silent Hill should be enough. The event is mostly for price, date and launch line up, so any new things are a bonus. I'd love for them to announce their backwards comparability is just as good as Xbox, but I think we'd know by now if it was
If people don’t plan on getting a 4K TV, the Series S is as good as anything. I think it’s going to be a huge seller for them too as it’s sort of an impulse buy, especially on the payment plan.
Sony will be fine though. I guess they’ll have their event In the next week to announce date, price and also show off stuff like the Silent Hill reboot.
Their exclusives won't be anywhere near Sony's in terms of quality or quantity, but I think Microsoft are doing an amazing job. £449 is cheap for something with those specs, and £249 is incredible to get your foot into next-gen if you don't have a 4K TV.
I know it's been said plenty of times, but just buying a console and subscribing to Gamepass would be such a fantastic experience, and thanks to All Access, can be done without breaking the bank.
I'm stunned at the price of the series S. It's not for me, but it's almost certain that a series S with a year of gamepass will be considerably less than a PS5 on it's own.
Also interesting how many commentators said 4k was pointless a few weeks back, but now think it's all important. If people don't have a 4K TV, this is an amazing console.
@Noob_Saibot Why wait if it's ready? Let people who want it for enhanced PS4 games buy it in November, then those waiting for the real next-gen games can buy it whenever they come out, be that March 2021, Christmas 2021, or even 2022.
The people playing down 4K are just coming off as a bit fanboyish. Any new TVs going forward are going to be 4K. It's like saying HD wasn't that important back when gen 7 launched in 2005 because most people didn't have a HD TV.
@S1ayeR74 New consoles tend to launch at a premium price because it's only the most hardcore of fans interested at launch. The mass market won't look at a new console until 2-3 years, and then it comes down in price. They don't need to make it affordable for all right out of the gate. There is also the matter of the pound absolutely tanking in value since the last consoles came out. Sony will look at the production cost and sale of the consoles in dollars. £400 now, is not what £400 was in 2013. Sony sold something for £400 in 2013 they got $628 for it. Today they sell something for £400 and they get $523 for it. You can't expect a foreign company to take a loss on something just because a particular country ruined the value of their currency.
Can't get excited for a non-Rocksteady Batman game. Not saying it will be bad. Origins was not bad, but it wasn't great either. Too many great games to be wasting time with something that's just more of the same.
It looks to me both companies want to avoid the bad press of announcing their price first. Both are going to be too expensive, it it will be easier to announce you’re the same price as the other guy after everyone has had their melt down.
Halo is a blow, but let's be honest, the only remotely decent looking game for PS5 is Miles Morales and that's going to be a short experience. MS need to push to get Flight Sim for launch because that's easily the most next-gen looking thing I've seen from either camp.
On top of the lack of games, it's almost certain these machines are going to be ridiculous expensive. I'm expecting $600 and £600. That's why they're not saying anything, because they know people are going to be mad.
I know it's disappointing that console launches don't feel amazing anymore, but it's impossible to have games that feel like a generational leap at launch. Those amazing games we all love on PS4 took 4/5 years to make. The PS5/XSX's specs would have been in the earliest planning stages back then, it would have been impossible to start making launch games that far back.
@Old-Red I don’t think it’s they want to undercut eachother. Both consoles are going to be very expensive and the first one to announce the price is going to get a lot of bad press.
Got a PS4 Pro Christmas 2016 and it felt like the perfect time to jump in. A nice little library had built up such as Metal Gear Solid V, Witcher 3 and Uncharted 4.
7 for me. I find the Edge review scale makes most sense to me. Why have 10 numbers if everything is just scored between 6 and 10? GoT doesn't really do anything bad, but it doesn't try to do anything interesting at all to push the genre forward. Very much typical of Sucker Punch since the end of the PS2 generation.
That list of games is great, but also a reminder to me of how long the PS4 took to become essential. You could easily have picked one up at the end of 2016 and caught up on the games from the first 3 years in no time. It was only after that we started to see regular big hitters.
Years ago, consoles would sell long after their successor had been released. I believe 30 million of the 100 million Playstations were sold after the PS2 launch, and it was even more extreme with the PS2, selling 50 million of its 150 million total after the PS3 came out.
The last gen dried up almost instantly after the release of the PS4 and XB1 however, and I see the same again. I think MS have got it right with the Lockheart approach.
In the last 10 years, I’ve probably bought at launch 3 times. Other than that, it paid more than £20 for anything. I see no point when they drop so much in price.
I’m buying a series X at launch mainly due to their fantastic backwards compatibility. I have a 360 hooked up and now Xbox One, and the thought of just having one console to play four generations of games is a pretty big deal to me. Catching up up Forza Horizon, Halo and Gears along with a few others, plus Flight Sim 2020 and Cyberpunk will be enough for me to start.
Will definitely have to wait for reviews, but will be keeping an eye on this for sure. I didn't buy the remake trilogy as I'm not really one for remakes, but if this turns out well, I'm in.

Demon Souls is suspect too. The small print said not available on other consoles for a limited time. It’s a Sony IP so won’t be on Xbox. So maybe PS4?
