Update 2: The game's Japanese website has confirmed that PS4 owners won't be able to upgrade to Dragon Quest XI S. The title is also a port of the Nintendo Switch version. You can read more about all of that through this link.
Update: There's no mention of any free update for existing Dragon Quest XI players in the official press release for Dragon Quest XI S on PS4. Even the in-depth look at what the expanded game brings to the table on the PlayStation Blog doesn't touch on the subject.
It's looking like this will be a full price re-release, folks.
Original Story: Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age -- which is an expanded and improved version of Dragon Quest XI -- is coming to PlayStation 4 later this year. This definitive edition originally debuted on Nintendo Switch in September 2019, and now it's finally heading to Sony's system as well. It'll release on the 4th December, 2020.
The only problem is that we don't know whether existing players will have to buy the game all over again. Hopefully all of the new content and improvements are made available as an update, but again, we don't have any confirmation yet. We'll update this story as soon as we know more.

I'd consider buying a cheap DLC upgrade (I have the original version on PC) but wouldn't buy a full on version again. Well, outside of a 90% off Steam sale.
Well i wont be buying it again so i would hope it comes as a patch or a small fee. Sadly i doubt that will be the case
Never played this and was going to buy it in the sale but that can wait now. I've got Gamepass so I may as well play it on that
I think it’s pointless to release the enhanced version to other platforms now that the game has been out for so long & the portability of the Switch version makes it the better option.
LOL,there is no dlc for the missing content.Atleast its coming to ps4.
And to pc (ku ku ku).
Nice, I'm glad I waited for the S version to come out and didn't buy the first version of game 😃
oh my... i have been holding off on playing my copy of dq xi in that i was expecting an update to be released that fixes the midi soundtrack (with the improved orchestrated version). please include this in a patch — do NOT pull an atlus and force people to re-purchase the game all over again at full price!
Yeah I've been holding out for so long. Glad i can finally play this game in full. The switch demo was fun, but I can't stand how ugly it looked
@Porco They are releasing it as a full priced game. No patches or DLC. It’s also a stab that when you compare it to Persona 5 Royal, DQXIS has way less added content to warrant paying full price.
@wiiware good idea to wait for the "s" version. the sales on vanilla dq xi were just too tempting as i picked up a physical copy for $20. s-e will likely sell the "s" version at full retail price, unfortunately.
@Akurusu oh, no! s-e has already confirmed that there will be no DLC option for owners of the base game?
@Porco Nope :/ I’m one of the owners of the base game too!
what differences between this and the original?
And they wonder why people hold off from buying games day one (which I started to do) because later on your feel scammed with the complete version releasing later and cheaper sometimes, either way I really enjoy my time with this game so I don’t think I will come back to it since I already platinum the game
@Porco I want to buy the game too when it discounted on psn but people says the music in switch is way better than in the ps4 version so I waited in the case of maybe the S version also come on ps4.
Squareenix should just sells the upgrade as DLC, I have no problem buying the discounted game and buy the upgraded music as long as the price isn't expensive. Maybe around $10.
@GKO900 Oh,You do not like missing content from your launch day game, let us increase just the base game price next gen, and still get away with cutting content.
@rachetmarvel Exactly, I don’t mind if they increase the price but I know they will just keep releasing DLC, Season Passes, micro transactions etc, physical games don’t make sense anymore thanks to their tactics which are working so far, heck sometimes not even indies are complete anymore they get updates, patches and DLC just like AAA games
At least Square is finally releasing it on other platforms. I'll probably get it on sale in the future since I've already beaten the base DQ11.
Probably worth upgrading just to be rid of the horrible MIDI music. There's a ton of QoL and story updates too, though. Best version of the game.
As great as the game is, I'm not paying for it full price again for just a few added bells and whistles. Naughty practice this.
Nice way do nickle and dime people. First release the game with crappy music and a horrible dub, then release the new version for 60€
Too late I already have this on Switch.
I’ve been waiting all this time to buy it! I knew it had to happen at some point.
Glad I held off on buying it up to now.
Honestly not going to double dip on this one. I might consider the PC version for better performance but I already have this game on Switch and it just feels right for that platform. For those hesitating on a purchase who've played the vanilla release, I'd say it's well worth it for the extra story missions and the addition of orchestrated field/battle music alone.
@Akurusu If its an update for PS4 then it is worth it. Portability isn't a selling point to everyone. I never play anything portable as my old eyes can't take it and I'd rather have my sound system and tv to play games.
Played the hell out of this game on the Switch. Sylvando is my favorite video game character ever (maybe.)
I got the standard Ed for PS4, but given this Ed is coming to GamePass, I’m definitively not buying it again for PS4. Already bought this game twice as it is.
Better late than never. If they had announced this sooner I probably wouldn't have bought the Switch version.
I knew it. It was obvious it was a timed exclusive. Looking forward to playing the expanded version again but without terrible NPC pop-in and LOD issues all over the place.
This was the game of the showcase for me. I own the original version on PC but wanted to go through it on the PS4 as well. When S came out on the Switch, I held off hoping that SE would upgrade the PS4 version, and thankfully they finally have!
Updated the article. The official press release and other marketing materials have no mention of any free upgrades for existing players. Maybe we'll learn more closer to the time, but it's looking like you'll have to buy this again.
@wiiware I literally just bought DQ11 on PS4 last week for £22.
It’s also on sale now still for £24 in the Summer Sale.
If they don’t add a free upgrade (or even paid DLC) there will be some unhappy folk.
At least I have Gamepass son’s Xbox that I can use on PC I guess.
The PC version of the game is being priced at 39.99.
@AJDarkstar I am guessing that Nintendo had some exclusive deal with this version of the game.
@Kienda It's a brand new game but it's a switch port, man what a letdown. I have gamepass but I'm not trusting xbox pc app for long rpg games, I bought gears 5 and halo mcc in steam because at one time my xbox pc app suddenly stop working and crash instantly.
I'm not putting 50+ hours and get my save gone. Pc gamepass is good for indie games though, just finished installing carrion
Aw yes, so glad I held out on getting the previous PS4 version or Switch version.
@Akurusu I think Royal had a nice amount of content and it wasnt a Switch port so.
@Kienda Its a nice price €22 for the game i dont think people who get it at this price should complain about a free update.

A free update is a rarity for a paid game, persona Royal and this game have proven that, same goes for the "extend" version of Blazblue games
@Flaming_Kaiser I wasn’t asking for a free update.
I said there would be some unhappy folk because we are buying it so close to release and no chance of us updating our version.
I’m happy to pay more. Just would have preferred to keep my current save and get the upgrades rather than starting again. It’s just meant I’ve put my play on hold and will just play it in Game Pass when it comes out.
@Flaming_Kaiser I think I said that, I don’t feel like looking for my comment but I think I said Royal has more content & I don’t see the problem with the Switch port.
I bought the original one for £10 on Amazon, so I won't be paying 5 times the price for a slightly improved version. Also I don't have time to play it again
Hmm how much extra content is there? I mean I held out on the original and Switch version for some time now, so even if it's a small amount of Story content I'm lucky as I'd rather have it on ps4. I only noticed the 2d mode, though.
So "DLC" basically costs $60 (entire new game).
And your existing save might not work with it.
Wow, that's some major customer service!
No, thanks. I'll stick with my original PS4 copy.
Music is fine and playing in 3D is preferred anyway.
@Akurusu You are right my apologies thats why i should not react during the nightshifts.
So its not the best version but the most complete i think that sums it up.
@Kienda Got It on release my biggest issue is that we dont get the updates for the PS4 but we get a Switch port they could at least have added the extra story content and the option for the music.
