Horizon Forbidden West is one of PlayStation 5's flagship exclusives, looking fantastic in its debut trailer from a few months back. As it turns out, however, you won't need a PS5 to play it at all; the sequel is also in development for PS4.
That's right — just like Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West is a cross-gen title, being made for both PS5 and PS4. It doesn't end there, either. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is also coming to both consoles.
As noted on the PlayStation Blog, these three games will benefit from a PS5 upgrade path. "The PS4 digital versions of launch games include a free upgrade on both PS5 consoles, while the PS4 disc versions of these games include a free upgrade on the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc drive," Sony confirms.
Unexpected news, but good news for those not looking to get a PS5 straight away. What do you think of this? Tell us in the comments section below.

So what happened to "We won't do cross-gen games to get people to upgrade faster?"
That certainly went the way of HALO Infinite.
Also, yikes...those prices on games man. Now third parties really wont hold back.
"We believe in generations"
If GOW is the same (and Demon Souls to a lesser extent) i just went from a day 1 to 2022 purchaser.
What the hell.
If this is true then i'm waiting with buying a ps5 till 2022.
Backlog is still big enough.
I hope the PS4 version won't hold back the game...
Demon Souls is suspect too. The small print said not available on other consoles for a limited time. It’s a Sony IP so won’t be on Xbox. So maybe PS4?
At least buying on PS4 and getting the free upgrade will be cheaper as it looks like next gen games are going up in price.
@Stragen8 same here
I don't get that, Sony normally don't do crossgen games and flies in the face of what Jim Ryan said about getting over onto PS5 quickly.
Well I guess I'm not getting the PS5 for a year.
That is freaking horrible.
I feel like we've been lied to
I'm with the guys above: no point getting PS5 at launch if Spiderman and Horizon are coming to PS4.
Granted, I'm VERY happy that I can play these on my current PS4.
Maybe Xbox Series X on day one then... and PS5 in a couple of years?
Sony have just turned into Microsoft
My brain is so confused now on when to buy and what to buy.
Might go series x now day one.
I think Microsoft may like this new Sony.
Glad I read this before the preorders go live tomorrow, it can wait
ehh?.. this strategy has lost me. "we believe in generations"?!?. little big planet 3 released on PS3 and 4, so the sackboy thing i understand somewhat.. but horizon is one of those tentpole system sellers. if it's true of horizon forbidden west, expect the same from god of war 2.
When does proper next gen start? What’s the point in PS5 if you can play everything on PS4 looking slightly worse? Nothing in that presentation even looked next gen.
Awesome news, I won't be upgrading for at least a few years and am happy to play them on PS4, where games still look routinely stunning.
...
The PS5 is becoming more and more unappealing. Only thing we are missing is a Knack equivalent.
Kinda sucks but oh well.
Though it makes sense since most of these games most likely is costing the big bucks to create and I doubt the small install base on PS5 will cover the cost.
Oh wow!
If they suddenly reveal Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is cross gen too, then that's my planned preorder cancelled.
Why are people freaking out? I’m getting PS5 day 1 because I want the performance and graphical enhancements that come with it. I’m putting off buying Cyberpunk 2077 because I’d rather wait to play it on PS5 rather than PS4. But I’m happy that PS4 players can get it. Yeah, I could buy Miles Morales on PS4 but the load times will be faster on PS5. I guess it comes down to why you are getting a PS5.
And my potential excitement just dropped. I really don’t care that much about the game anymore.
@Peach64 nope not a sony ip
I'm gonna be very surprised if the game can be RUN on the base PS4, the base model already can't run some games smoothly and this would really push it over the limit
Wow I never expected this. I'll be getting the ps4 version right away.
So, I take it that there will be no flying and other next gen features in Horizon Forbidden West due to they said it wasn’t possible on the PS4 and now we hear the game is no longer a PS5 exclusive. The PS4 is going to hold it back.
@Wake13 I wouldn’t be surprised. Horizon looked stunning on PS4 and ran nicely, they can make the sequel look just as good and run the same. The PS5 version will look slightly better and have a better frame rate but I bet it’ll be just fine on PS4 too.
@The_ghostmen Really? Interesting, back in 2016 which is not that far, Miyazaki mentioned the IP is owned by Sony. Did From or Namco buy it or something?
Well, Sony really make the ridicule with that "generations" BS.
@Keyblade-Dan because we have...
If they play alright on PS4 and all the PS5 offers a bit more tarting up and some quicker costume changes then I can hardly imagine why I should even think of dropping an extra £459 squids for the “honour”. The more I find out the more I feel that owning a PS5 in the first year is gonna feel like a status symbol and barely anything else.
@Fenbops I mean they're gonna do a lot more with the sequel and seeing the trailer looks more that the game is gonna have water and air exploration, I'm not worried about the graphics but the CPU of the PS4 is so damn old I'm afraid that can it at least run at solid 30fps?
@Bluetrain7 Cyberpunk 2077 won't be getting its next gen patch until some time in 2021. There's no hurry.
@Wake13 I think the original was pretty solid even on the base PS4 right? I played it on pro so not sure. I think they’ll get it running fine on PS4. I get the feeling 2 will be held back by the fact it’s also a cross gen game now, cross gen games never take full advantage of new hardware.
Disappointed by this news. It means it'll be built to the lowest common denominator ie the PS4 vanilla.
Well that's made upgrading less of a priority. I can get Miles and Forbidden West on my PS4.
Plus making a PS4 version of the game will hold back the PS5 version.
I feel even more sure about waiting till 2022 or PS5 Slim now.
@Bluetrain7 I honestly don't have a problem with that. But saying " we believe in generations" and "new console don't have to be held back by old tech" it kinda contradicts the whole direction they told us they were taking. It was straight up lies
I mean this is just ridiculous and also why make all the other announced exclusive cross gen but leave out ratchet and clank like if your going to annoye us you might as well do it right.
@Fenbops there was also rumors that Microsoft was also having problems running Halo Infinite on the OG Xbox One, seems like they're cutting support for it
Nintendo seems the only guy around the block that wants to utilize the most out of new tech
@Ben7982 Because it shows the power of their SSD. I'm beginning to believe it was a lie too.
@RazielReaper He's incorrect. Sony owns the IP. Atlus and Bandai Namco published it in NA and Europe respectively.
This is beyond stupid and virtually eliminates any excitement I had, so after mocking Microsoft they go ahead and do the same thing. They are also making it for the really ancient vanilla PS4! If it has to run on that old thing that means I shouldn't expect much.
@The_ghostmen Uhm, yes. It is a Sony IP. Lol. Atlus and Namco simply published it outside of Japan. Might want to do some research.
https://www.polygon.com/2013/6/13/4424550/demons-souls-2-shuhei-yoshida-e3
😂 how the tables have turned. After all the backlash about Halo Infinite and other Series X/S games being cross-gen and being told they are going to hold the next gen games back.
Also what about Sony’s message “We believe in generations”? Yeah right, of course you do! 🙄
@Wake13 man infinite looked like garbage and it wouldn’t run on original Xbox one? That’s crazy.
Wtf is all that bs Sony was talking about having games built jyst for PS5??? There doing the same ***** MS is doing. Hell this just made sure I dont upgrade for a while if their doing this.
That's great for those that weren't planning on upgrading to the PS5 straight away (such as myself), as PS4 owners can still get to play these wonderful games.
I know people won't like this but the more details that are emerging today between cross-gen games, rising prices, etc, the more it's taking the shine off PS5. I was set for a day one purchase but now I'm definitely reconsidering. I also don't think cross-gen games are bad though, in the early days of Xbox 360 a lot of what I bought was cross gen. These games can still take advantage of the newer, better hardware. I'm actually more bothered by the rising cost of games. Can give me all the excuses you want, but $70 is starting to push it.
@Fenbops I mean this is just a rumor that has been going around for a while, no confirmation but this was it
I mean if the rumors of Halo Infinite can't run on the OG Xbox One, I'm really worried for Horizon Forbidden West running on the OG PS4
Wow this is totally freaking insanely nuts?!?!?!
Why announce this today Sony? Why not day 1? I don't get it at all.
So getting HFW on PS4. And Sackboy. Just nuts. I'm floored from all the hypocrisy. smh
@SamMR yea I just realise that as you said, sony clearly decided any game that they can put a full lengthy load times in without running it we will put on a ps4.
Incredible to think that in 2021, developers will still be releasing games on hardware that was designed in/before 2013 😳
Eugh
@MaccaMUFC
Good bye Sony you two faced liars.
We believe in generations
And you can stick your price increase.
Even my Son an massive Sony loyalist is not buying PS5 now on day one.
As for me series x day one.
I find this really disappointing. The PS5 supposedly frees developers to use new methods thanks to the super fast SSD, but I guess none of that really applies to this major franchise. It's a weird move. Why remove one of the main reasons for people to buy a PS5? Why all this talk about generations of they have a similar strategy to Microsoft?
@Dezzy70 I mean, you already have the xbox on your profile pick,so you where pretty much on your way there.
I'm doing the same thing I did with the ps4 launch, I'll just wait a year or so to get the PS5 and instead I'll buy the games I wanna play that are available to me on ps4 and get the free upgrades of the games on ps5 when that time comes.
Wow,gotta admit this news has really made my decision to buy a PS5 at launch even harder.I buy a new system for new exclusives but if they are all ending up on the PS4 why bother paying all that money for a new system?Very disappointed in this news..
This is not going to turn out into a great thing for Sony. Sony held back this information during first showcase and led every one to believe something entirely different.
Once they collected enough publicity, and had people dump on competition, they went the same route as the competition.
What a farce.
I will be buying a ps5 as I was going to in 2021 when Horizon came out, so nothing has changed for me.
I just disliked being lied to in form of "omission".
So Sony's "next-gen" games impossible to run on weaker hardware are coming to PS4?
WTF?!?! Hmm why was SONY saying only on PS5 these games can be made on and then now most of the so called only can made on PS5 games are coming to PS4 to now!?!? I am getting a bit annoyed with Guerrilla Games now. First Horizon went to PC and now making a game that can even be played on a last Gen console. Hmm. But saying all that still hyped for the PS5
@rachetmarvel
I am now wasn’t until tonight
Was a bit more PS5.
Have a Pro anyway.
Meh, more games hobbled by cross gen compatibility...
Wow people are really mad at this, it definitely goes against "we believe in generations" but it shouldn't be the deciding factor on whether or not you're going to purchase the system. Obviously there are still 120 million PS4s out there, are they just going to be playing fifa and COD everyday? And it's just 3 games for now I really don't get the outrage.
@SamMR Yes, I totally get the messaging being the opposite and why people were upset with that aspect. But people arguing that there is no reason to upgrade if the game is also available on PS4 too is what puzzles me. If you are wanting the PS5 experience then the game being cross-gen shouldn't matter.
@Octane I am aware. But there are other games that I want to play at launch.
@theMEGAniggle It is about the omission and taking the "high road" when the actual intention was to pretty much do what the competition was doing in the first place.
Comes across as sneaky and deceitful.
@Bluetrain7 Yes, but just like how every one said that the games were going to be held back (I personally do not think they should be, depending on the approach of development) when MS suggested cross generational support, people will question the same to Sony now.
You tell me, are games truly next gen?
@TrolleyProblems Yes, the PS5 versions are even if the base game can run on PS4. The PS5 version will offer graphics, lighting, speed, and more that are not possible on the PS4.
@TrolleyProblems not really, demon souls isn't, ratchet and clank isn't, GOW 2 probably isn't and I'd think horizon only is because it's been in development a long time. Let's be real, miles morales looks amazing but it's not a next gen game the way demon souls and ratchet and clank are, and sackboy? Who's really mad about that.
Taking the high road is something Sony does a LOT but making a few games backtrack on that "we believe in generations" promise isn't doing what Xbox is doing. But that's just my opinion.
@Wake13 Funny fact, Halo Infinite was delayed so the Series version looks more "next-gen" and the other Xbox exclusives had the Xbox One version removed from the game tags and websites: Everwild, Avowed, Fable, Flight Simulator... So it seems that Microsoft is leaning towards next-gen now in spite of what they said about supporting Xbox One for two years and Sony is leaning towards the opposite of what they said about PS5 next-gen games.
@Bluetrain7 Then why was every one claiming that Xbox was going to hold things back when games were being advertised as cross generation?
@theMEGAniggle I just hate things not being advertised for what they are. that is all.
@BlueOcean Wait, those games aren't coming to xbox one S any more?
@BlueOcean That just proves my concerns, is the PS4 going to able to run these games at least stable 30fps, I mean some games are already having problems running on the OG PS4 right now.
Wrong move for Sony IMO, Even Nintendo doesn't even do this LUL
@rachetmarvel Nah, @Dezzy has complained about the same thing about Microsoft but they backpedalled about supporting Xbox One so he changed his mind about Series X.
@Wake13 Yeah and it's weird. Halo Infinite is the only Series game that has been re-confirmed to get an Xbox One version but at the same time they delay the game to improve the Series version. The other Xbox games are presented as Series games now, Xbox One eliminated. Now Sony does the opposite thing with the PS5 games that were supposed to be next-gen but now are cross-gen games. Digital Foundry is going to have a lot of work, I tell you.
@TrolleyProblems yes, hate them for not disclosing that. (No sarcasm btw, I read it back and it looks like I'm being sarcastic)
I just don't think it's bad, it's not like they are pulling an Xbox but yeah they should have said this. But then again if releasing info later on is bad then have the same energy for the release dates as they said it'll be a global launch but us in the UK are getting it a week later ☹️
@BlueOcean no, most of the games on XSX for the first 2 years are available on the whole family of Xbox. It's already been confirmed so yeah
@theMEGAniggle @TrolleyProblems Microsoft backpedalled. Only Halo Infinite has been re-confirmed to get an Xbox One version. The others got the Xbox One tag removed from game cards and websites, including Everwild, Avowed, Fable, Flight Simulator, basically everything other than Halo Infinite is Series exclusive now. Only Halo Infinite remains as a cross-gen game.
@theMEGAniggle I am checking UK Game prices too, and you guys aren't going to like em.
I am in Canada and prices will be high for us too.
@BlueOcean That is so weird. So their games aren't going to be held back now or were they being held back before?
@TrolleyProblems The only Xbox game that is being "held back" is Halo Infinite because it has been in development for a longer time and the Xbox One version hasn't been cancelled.
https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/halo-infinite
The other games have ditched the Xbox One version so they don't need to hold them back now.
https://www.gematsu.com/2020/07/everwild-drops-xbox-one-version-adds-xbox-series-x-version-drops-xbox-one-version-eternals-trailer#:~:text=Everwild%20will%20no%20longer%20launch%20for%20Xbox%20One%2C,is%20an%20overview%20of%20the%20game%2C%20via%20Microsoft%3A
https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/avowed
https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/fable
Flight Simulator appears as "Windows 10" game but it's confirmed to be coming to Series.
@BlueOcean Thank you so much for explaining this my friend
@TrolleyProblems No problem 😁.
@Bluetrain7 But now I'm wondering just how much faster those load times are on PS5 if the same games are optimized in time for PS4...
It makes you wonder for which console they made these cross-gen games first; did they plan Miles Morales from the ground up for PS4? What about Horizon Forbidden West? Is it truly worth shelling $400-500 plus $10 more each game for 10~ seconds shaved off the load times and marginally less pop-in?
We'll just have to wait and see comparison videos for performance and load times between these cross-gen games.
@BlueOcean huh, that is truly funny. I guess this is the generation of 180s
@TrolleyProblems it's disgusting how expensive these games are gonna be
It suggests that projected PS5 sales are low. There's nice buzz here on a dedicated website, but the world at large seems to be shrugging. Its not good.
@Ulysses That last line says everything. We will really have to wait and see because no one (except the developers) know exactly how much differently the versions will perform. So those who are unsure can skip the pre-order and wait for reviews. I completely understand the apprehension.
I AM SO UNBELIEVABLY HAPPY ABOUT THIS NEWS!!!
Horizon Zero Dawn is one of my favorite games ever but I had no desire to buy a PS5 other than Forbidden West.
SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW 😁😁😁
@MS7000 Knack 3 all but confirmed now lol.
I'm not really seeing the problem here. Modern consoles are very similar to pcs.
By that I mean you are able to have higher frame rates and resolution on a recent computer but you can still play the same game with less graphical wizardry on a 5 years old machine. PS5/PS4 games will be like that.
I wonder if the games that will be available on PS4 will be priced cheaper than the games made solely for PS5 cause you could honestly just buy the ps4 copy with free upgrade
this has to be coming out early 2021 with this news
So I'll login to my PS4 and buy these games, then login to my PS5 to download the free PS5 versions. That way I save $10 per game.
You shouldn’t talk about “we believe in generation” but still design games for old 2013 console 😕
I hope it’s only for launch ps5 games, I don’t want ratchet and clank or god of war ragnarok design is chained to old ps4.
Oh no! People without the money to buy a brand new console at launch can enjoy these games, too. Whatever shall we do?! Darn that Sony for not excluding the poorer people.
@DigiTM Yup! I can't imagine there's any downside to this method.
