We think it’s probably fair to say that the PlayStation 4 has played host to some pretty good games. Sony, in particular, has transformed its first-party portfolio into an unrivalled industry titan, and this social media montage celebrates that. Give it a watch, we’ll wait:
Yeah, the video editing is obviously outstanding, but the software on display is pretty decent, too, eh? Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us: Part II, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, Bloodborne… It’s not been a bad generation, has it?

I've seen the criticism going around that this montage highlights how similar Sony's first-party games are... But I think it's a bit of a weak point to make.
Sure, Sony's banked on third person action games a lot this generation — there's no denying that — but that doesn't change the fact that almost all of these games play completely differently. Are you gonna tell me The Last of Us 2 feels like Spider-Man? Ghost of Tsushima is built around its open world design. God of War is built around it puzzles and combat arenas.
I dunno, I think it's a very surface-level criticism. You can say Sony's played it a bit safe this gen with its exclusive output, but I think lumping all of these games together as "third person action" does each of them a huge disservice in what they try to achieve in terms of feel and design.
That montage was more of a mic drop moment than anyone else has had today.
I've actually been mulling over an idea of doing a big 5 to 10 minute montage video of many of Sony's exclusives this gen, I do want to have an actual song on it but can't settle on what at the moment.
So it's nice to see other have the same idea.
Where's Ratchet and Clank lol
As someone who’s first REAL console is PS4, (other than a Wii), I couldn’t be happier with the PS4, especially compared to the Xbox. It’s helped me get through high school. Whether it was playing the Nathan drake collection on Christmas of my freshman year, or getting the Last of Us 2 the weekend of my senior prom, it’s been an amazing gift. Can’t wait for PS5!
I’ve loved every game from Sony this generation.
While I love to see risks being made, it has been nice to know that when Sony puts a game out, it’s going to be a solid game with polished gameplay and story.
@ShogunRok
I dont understand your concern. This is just a lovely short montage without agenda or pretention. Of course it shows third person games. I wish Days Gone and R&C and the Order and ISS were in it. I may miss some
There could be other montages to show off first person games or racing games or VR games whatever. Trolling concerns dont need addressing.
This reminds me how stunning the boxart for that collection is! 😍
It wasn't bad. Not as bright and inovative as PS3, but not bad.
the quality is great but the portfolio is very samey samey, certainly not samey samey like awful Ubisoft games but there really isn't a lot of variety, I do wish they'd branch out and cover more genres and make smaller games and shorter games, with investments in the successful studios they could do that
@GAMER-GlRL
What you said isnt true though. Theres plenty of variety and many short games too the fact is Sony isnt as focused as Ms into FPS that is true and I love it.
There is a lot if variety though.
There was a time when people complained games were too short. In the last few years we saw Sony games become bigger and meatier (even open world games are now up there with the best third party can offer in scope and quality) but still supporting small games.
I think its human nature to follow trend criticism and I dont agree at all with SLayden pushing for shorter games. It just sounds demagogic.
That video montage is ace, shows the strength of sony's games
@ShogunRok absolutely spot on. It’s been an incredible generation
@GAMER-GlRL samey samey in what way? Third person action games? It’s obviously a formula that works for them, whilst they may be a similar genre it’s one that everyone can find something to love within.
I'm so glad I decided to switch my Xbox One for a PlayStation 4 in 2015. Sony constantly reminds me why I love gaming.
Sony has done something this gen that Microsoft just haven't been able to. I know it's to do with money but I still ask myself "what was/is it that Sony has that make developers choose them for exclusives (more often than not) more than xbone"
This tiny montage while, yes all 3rd person, are stunning SINGLE PLAYER games(at least the stories are) which only within the last few years people were saying were dying off.
Sony must be doing something well behind the scenes
Killzone Shadow Fall is so underrated. It looked fantastic at launch. And performed very well. It's only downside was the scaling of difficulty during the story.
@ShogunRok
I love that people say Sony is playing it "safe" with their exclusive library. But just think about it for a second.
HZD: First RPG and 3rd person game for the studio. New IP.
GOW: Completely overhauled the entire game and what it could be.
TLOUpt2: Took some risks. I'll leave it at that to avoid spoiling and to avoid the eventual potentially toxic discussion.
GOT: I mean who would have thought they would make a freaking feudal japan samurai game? Completely out of nowhere.
4 games that took huge risks taking into account that they are AAA, so I don't even buy that critique. Pretty much no other AAA studio takes a risk like that.
So many games!
And yeah, I don't buy the "they're all the same" argument at all. The variety is outstanding imo.
That list of games is great, but also a reminder to me of how long the PS4 took to become essential. You could easily have picked one up at the end of 2016 and caught up on the games from the first 3 years in no time. It was only after that we started to see regular big hitters.
Where's Knack? Disappointeeeeeed!
Poor Deacon.
☹️
Days Gone, the black sheep of the Sony family?
Ha, this is one cool-looking montage. So many great hits. Yeah, Sony excel at third person action games. And? It's not exactly something to criticise them for.
After all, it's not that easy to pull off. If you dont believe me then just look at the state of the Xbox presentation yesterday.
😉
@AdamNovice Ooh how about....
"Simply The Best"?
Too much?
"We Are The Champions"?
Nah, that's going too far!
"The Winner Takes It All"
That'll do.
😜
Awesome video, the editing was fantastic and whilst you could add many more it was a great selection and a small indication of why this generation has been so successful for Sony 😎
@ShogunRok I understand the criticism but at the same time, not particularly fair. I mean, Killzone Shadow Fall, Wipeout, GT, Drive Club, Resogun, Matterfall etc.
Probably more the issue is that a lot of the most successful games of this gen have been third person titles but you could argue that has been true of many of the major AAA games this gen. On the XB1 side, Gears 4 and 5, Recore, Quantum Break, Sunset Overdrive. Cross gen, the Assasin's Creed games, Control, Dark Souls 3, Sekiro, RE2, RE3, DMC 5, The Division, Jedi Fallen Order.
I just think that third person titles have become the FPS of the previous generation. Maybe it is a tired design but let's face it... it is industry wide. It also happens that Sony First party releases are some of the best examples of the genre.
@Rudy_Manchego Third person view is more cinematic and less headache-inducing than first person. If anyone prefers the latter then the Xbox is thataway!
Third person isn't a genre, it's just more natural and the fact that Cyberpunk is fp only really disappoints me. They made The Witcher 3, a glorious third person epic. Why reject all of that? I don't get it.
@Col_McCafferty Agreed and also, if you want to be cynical, third person allows for better customization of characters etc. In RPG's etc, this is actually a really big part of the experience (admittedly, now preyed upon by some game makers).
I think there are advantages to FPS and vice versa but it depends on the story you are trying to tell. I think FPS can be more immersive and immediate (though I am lucky and not affected by any motion issues). However, as you say, Third person isn't a genre. Bloodborne is in no way the same type of game as The Last of US Pt 2 for example - completely different genres.
@NomNom Ah, I see you're a person of culture as well. Honestly I still sink dozens of hours into the game every so often.
Loved every minute of this gen. Bar few games that were sad as hell, anthem cough. Fallout 76 cough cough. But even the naughty dog fiasco. All still good I'm loving got though and I've still to play shadow of the colossus though same with ratchet and clank. But I think the ps4 will be around alot longer then the ps3 ever did.
@Boucho11 everyone? no, not everyone, the sales are comparatively good but everyone would be 100 million copies sold
@JJ2 nope, there was no substance to your point of view, never mind
@GAMER-GlRL Ffs. It was a figure of speech, you knew exactly what I meant but instead chose to pick on that. Your original comment asking for smaller games, if I’m not mistaken are Sony not planning On doing that anyhow?
@GAMER-GlRL
I see
I guess you are of those who think TLOU is the same as Days gone, GOW is the same as TLOU, ISS same as Bloodborne, Killzone same as Little big planet, Spider-man same as GoT, Dreams, same as DriveClub or GT or R&C, I could go on and on....its all 'samey'
They also helped develop a lot of small indie games. Point of views you know arent alway matching reality and substance, what can you do ? 😁
@JJ2 Sony have killed it this gen, I'm not sure how anybody can complain with what they have offered us during the PS4 era.
Then I remember, no 'community' seems to hate it's chosen hobby more than gamers.
🙄
@ShogunRok I think you're missing the point, perhaps. I really enjoy my PS4 and I've had it since launch. I've played a majority of these games and I do like them, but every year I've played less and less of them because it's hard to get pumped about games that do feel so samey. I understand that they have very different elements in many ways. No one is denying that (well, no one SHOULD deny that), but in the same way that I get tried of open world games or racing games or first person shooters, it's hard seeing these constant third person high octane action games all the time.
That being said, I liked the fact that there were a lot more platformers revealed for PS5. Still, I'd love to see more RPGs, 2D games of any kind and just other genres in general with wildly different control schemes and perspectives.
"Sony, in particular, has transformed its first-party portfolio into an unrivalled industry titan"
Good portfolio? Yes. For sure. Unrivalled? No way. Nintendo offers a similar or even larger amount of great titles and of a much more diverse array of genres.
It's good they both exist but I'm excited more for what Sony is doing with PS5 and hope they continue to diversify that portfolio into more genres and perspectives.
