Re: Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection (PS5) - An Almost Flawless Victory for Fighting Game Fans

somnambulance

Sort of interesting to see how critical people are in the comments.

Personally, I love these Digital Eclipse collections and documentaries. Really happy with this release. It satisfies the nostalgia itch, for sure. The quality of the games on presentation are all over the place, but we already knew that, and it’s fun going back to play the bad ones. It’s entertaining. At the very least, I can now play MK3 Ultimate whenever I feel like it. It was always my personal go-to at the arcade back in the day. Actually had a blast playing it live at an arcade over the summer (though arcades don’t quite have that feel that they did 25-30 years ago now).

Not sure about other PS5, but it runs flawlessly on Switch 2 in handheld mode.

Re: Poll: Do You Play Horror Games Around Halloween?

somnambulance

It all depends on the release schedule, honestly. Last time I marathoned any horror games on purpose, I think, was the year RE Village came out when I played REmake 2 and REmake 3 back to back in October of that year. I used to do that a little more often, but I’m a release schedule kind of guy now, I guess.

I have an Alan Wake hoodie and Maniac Mansion sweater I wear more often though! Jeez, I wish someone would port Maniac Mansion to modern consoles…

Re: Talking Point: Is PS5 Really in Competition with TikTok?

somnambulance

The reality is that Sony’s biggest competition is that the F2P model took off and following that there’s been a down economy. People are simply spending less on gaming because it’s cheaper and more social to play things like Fortnite.

…but that’s only a part of the story. I think that genuine gamers and mainstream gamers have always been separate demographics that aren’t studied separately. I do think that more people are buying indie games and investing outside the AAA space, but that’s not as large a demographic as the casual space, so there’s less notice taken.

Re: Monster Hunter Wilds Doing So Badly That's It's Been Outsold by MH Rise, Devil May Cry 5

somnambulance

With Monster Hunter right now, I think the things is that people aren’t “trying MH” anymore. The series is back to having a core concept rather than having a dramatic shake up like World was. Personally, I’m not much a MH guy, but I bought World and Rise because the series seemed to have new life to it. Didn’t love either game. Played the Wilds beta and I was good. I’ll never buy the game. People that are on the fence are probably buying the cheaper games instead during sales too, as the risk is lower for a potential reward.

I’d imagine KCD2 releasing right after it to considerably more word of mouth too might’ve washed out some wishy washy early sales too. Usually MH is a little more present in the GotY discussion. This year, it does feel forgotten and would be surprised to see it in many year end top 10 lists.

Re: Poll: Will You Be Buying Halo: Campaign Evolved on PS5?

somnambulance

Yes, on day one! This is the official next era in gaming. Going to share this one with my son as our first co-op FPS and I’m really looking forward to it. The novelty of it coming to PS5 can’t be overlooked either. I think I got goosebumps the moment I saw the PS5 logo. For all the good times with Halo over the years, I can’t skip this event.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 604

somnambulance

Finished Pokemon Z-A this morning (and the final season of Resident Alien, as much as that is not a game). And after that, there was a new Katamari game. I will be out of town in a moment for the next two days. I will bring the Switch 2, sooooo… maybe a round of Hades 2 and Absolum to complement Katamari? Or maybe just Katamari. Katamari is such pure good to me.

Re: The Outer Worlds 2 (PS5) - Mechanically Fantastic RPG Struggles to Be Memorable

somnambulance

Since when is a 7/10 a bad review score? C’mon community. By giving it a 7/10, Robert said it was good, and if anyone knows how to review RPGs across the internet, it’s him. Let’s all remember that not every game needs to be 8/10+ to be worth playing. Based on what I’m seeing, if you’re someone that loved the first one, this will be more of that, but with better writing, according to this review and others. If we reduce ourselves to only play GotY tier titles, get ready for the industry to continue its descent into banality. Play the 7/10s. They’re still worth it.

Having said that, I was hoping to be wrong, but it sounds like my personal biggest issue with the first game persists in the second one, where I do struggle to remember the story (and I completed the first one). The whole first game felt derivative of Fallout as if it was meant to be based on a tale from a fictitious comic book that existed in the Fallout universe or something.

Even so, having played through Starfield, I can’t help but be curious about how this one turned out in the desire to compare them. Alas, with me still having Absolum, Yotei, Pokemon, Silent Hill, and Katamari to play (and Metroid soon enough), this year probably isn’t the year, but maybe if we get a slow patch and a good sale, I’ll be in.

Re: PS6 Could Be Less Than Half the Price of Microsoft's 'Very Premium' Next-Gen Xbox

somnambulance

Right now, I think I’ll just keep my Switch 2, PS5, and Xbone plugged in. The Xbone can still stream any game my Series S can, but I can watch DVDs on it. Wanna bet Nextbox games will be streamable on it too? I get the feeling Nintendo made waves with MKW, but will be the cheaper option again sooner than we all expect. And I’m sort of expecting PS5 games to continue releasing for a decade. I’ll upgrade if Kojima makes it the only option to play Physint… or my PS5 breaks again….

Also, I only expect PS6 to be half Xbox’s price if there’s a change in strategy from what we’ve seen this generation and Sony pivots somewhat to focus the experience on things other than premium visuals.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 603

somnambulance

Pokémon Z-A. I am suspecting everything else I was playing will temporarily be put on hold for a bit after my session last night. The discussion on its “Dreamcast visuals” is totally overblown and untrue. If we’re going to pick a topic that makes more sense to go after Game Freak about, it’d be the lack of voice acting…

Anyway, the gameplay so far is just so good and addictive! I had a hard time putting the game down now that I’m finally out of the introductory portion of the game and I have the freedom to play as I like.

I was playing other things before Pokemon, such as Absolum, Hades 2, and Yotei, but those games will be on ice for a little bit.

Also, I’ll be making a habit of showing off that I was on TV yesterday! Lol.

Re: Heavy Rain Dev Wants You to Stop Crying and Start Competing in New Multiplayer Game

somnambulance

I feel like Quantic Dream has dropped off heavily as a studio since Become Human. I loved their earlier games, but I think they’ve pivoted in a really weird direction after basically mastering a very niche and specific genre. It’s a shame because no one makes Heavy Rain style games anymore and it feels like there could be a market for it. This news just proves that the studio doesn’t understand why they had success before or who their audience is.

Re: Talking Point: PS6 In 2027 - How Do You Feel About Sony's Next-Gen Console?

somnambulance

Honestly, I can wait for the next Kojima game and will probably stick with current consoles until that point. Sony’s pushed me away a lot this generation with the shift from narrative adventure games. For the longest time, I felt that Rift Apart was the only essential exclusive game. Fortunately, we’ve had Astro Bot, Death Stranding, and Yotei since then, but even so, right now Intergalactic is the only first party game on the horizon I care about. It feels easier than it should have to scale back my gaming spend on Sony consoles the last couple years. Sony will have to show a truly compelling argument to get me interested in PS6. It’s sad because I felt the exact opposite in the latter years of the PS4 era.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 602

somnambulance

Well, I forgot to write on this yesterday, but so far I’ve played Absolum, which I love to start, Kuukiyomi 4, which my son stole from me and proceeded to play as rudely as possible, a few rounds of Hades 2, which I’m starting to progress in now (and I agree with everyone that prefers the first game, basically, because the second one may have better gameplay but a less compelling storyline), and Super Mario Galaxy 2… because my son was having trouble with bosses.

Hopefully I get a chance to play Yotei as well! Pokemon is coming out next week and, after a relatively easy year to stay ahead of games, I’m sinking now! A good problem to have, huh?

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Ghost of Yotei?

somnambulance

A solid 8/10. The story is still been-there done-that to me, even though I’ve had a little bit more time in the game. I’m far from finished though. The exploration and style is fantastic and it actually utilizes the controller in an interesting way, which is something I’ve wanted from a game for years. It’s absolute comfort food. If the story and quests were more unique, I think it’d be an easy 9/10, but it just doesn’t seem like that’ll be the case. My opinion could change. It’ll take me a while before I beat it at the moment. There’s a lot of games out there right now and I just haven’t had a lot of gaming time to get too deep. It’ll probably make my top 10 list at the end of the year, but it could be anywhere in that list, at the moment.

Re: Call of Duty Is Trying Everything It Can to Make You Play Black Ops 7 Over Battlefield 6

somnambulance

@wildcat_kickz This is absolutely the struggle I was going through while playing CoD back in 2019-2020-ish. My friends had roped me back into trying to be a competitive FPS player for the sake of being more social after I had largely dropped playing multiplayer games for a couple years. I WAS a strong player circa 2013-2014, but I’d stopped playing CoD, Halo, etc for a while. Sure, I was proficient enough in Overwatch, but that’s a very different style of game.

When I had returned, the skill gap between my friends and I was so vast that I never really had a chance to catch up, thanks to SBMM. My k/d ratio was awful, but my wins were very high. It forced me to have a very different playstyle than I used to have, which made me a support player rather than someone that had the ability to compete one on one with another player… as I was definitely in full-on sweat lobbies. I know I didn’t enjoy playing CoD every time we played it and that’s because I wasn’t playing with my skill ceiling, but with another person’s. To use a Dragon Ball analogy, I was Resurrection F era Gohan playing with Super Saiyan Blue Goku and Vegeta against Golden Freeza, Broly, and Jiren lol.

Re: 25+ Essential PS5, PS4 Games You Must Buy in Player's Choice Sale

somnambulance

@themightyant For me, it’s not about completing every game I own anymore, but playing them enough to where I’ve gotten my fill from them. I complete a lot of what I purchase, but I also will drop a game if I feel it’s not for me. I’m not a completionist, so I tend to play through the story and go to the next game. Most of the backlog for me are games I’ll likely never complete for me or the games that just didn’t click.

A good example for me is Pacific Drive. I got maybe 15 hours or so into the game total, and I’ve tried to get into it maybe 2 or 3 times so far and it never seems to click. I still pick it up once in a while just to mess with, but I’ve got no intention of actually beating it anymore. I wouldn’t consider that game backlog for me anymore, as I know where I’m at with it.

In my younger days, I used to have a backlog problem and my OCD was agitated by it. I took “a break” from gaming about 10 years ago due to it and other reasons, but only lasted about half a year from the break and arguably made my backlog crazier, though in a healthier way, I suppose. I paced myself more.

In 2017, I had my first child and my wife told me I had to go do something in another room while she fed our son because, man, the kid had fomo since day 1 lol. In 2018, I broke both of my feet on separate occasions and also had to have foot surgery a couple times not related to those injuries. Those two years gave me a bit of time to catch up for sure. Then 2020 was something of a blessing for me because I was able to organize what still existed of my backlog and allowed me to complete what I actually wanted to complete and discard the rest. I think I had more opportunity than most to tackle the backlog. The only year since where challenge happened was 2023 for me, but 2024 was sort of slow, so I caught back up.

This year, so far, the only games that I’ve bought that may backlog are Silent Hill F and Split Fiction, and I’ll say that that is largely because my wife hadn’t enjoyed playing either of them. I’ve actually finished everything else so far! I’m working on games right now that all released in the last maybe 3 weeks. But Mina the Hollower got delayed and November’s pretty empty, so I may actually have time to play everything yet… outside Split Fiction… I don’t think that one’s happening.

Just gave you my life story, but hopefully that rationalizes it!

Re: Konami Is on a Roll! Wins Back-to-Back Players' Choice Awards on PS Blog

somnambulance

I mean, the AAA games are almost always likely to be the winners in such things, so I hardly think it’s surprising. Konami basically released the only established IPs in the last two months as well. I’d imagine Silksong has more traction with Nintendo players than Playstation. Honestly, another true success story here though is that Trails scored as highly as it did. That’s quite a surprise.

Personally, I’ve started Silent Hill F and thus far, I’m not sure how I feel about the game yet. Pushsquare’s review is lining up with my own perspective thus far, but I’ve still got more to go. Good on Konami to finally be back either which way though, and I’ll happily take a new Castlevania whenever they’re ready.

Re: 25+ Essential PS5, PS4 Games You Must Buy in Player's Choice Sale

somnambulance

@Titntin @themightyant Only one on that list I don’t have is Mortal Shell and I’m not interested. Jeez, my catalog is dense. It’s sort of crazy. I caught up in 2020 on the “games I missed” type of thing and sales were plentiful and deep in those times. I’ve literally only bought games at release the last five years! I think Mortal Kombat Legacy Collection is going to be the first game I let sit on my wishlist for a sale since Cave Story+. I was waiting on that one to hit $10 since I’ve already played it, but I do t know if that’ll ever happen. Only reason I’m letting MK sit on the wishlist too is because my kids basically told me that they won’t play MK with me and they told me fighting is stupid. I mean, I guess I’m raising them right in that way, but I was like… fine, we don’t need that one then… for now… maybe?

Re: Poll: What Are Your First Impressions of Ghost of Yotei on PS5?

somnambulance

@FatalBubbles @Jammer I’m glad you have Little Nightmares 3. I’m struggling to recover from Mina the Hollower getting delayed. 😭

Seriously though, I’m going to be bouncing between Yotei and Pokemon for most of the rest of the year and having a good time, even if I’m going to be doing the same thing I’ve done before. I could see my vote for Game of the Month next month being the new Katamari game potentially right now. 😅

Re: Bungie's Maligned FPS Marathon Makes Its Return in Closed Technical Test This Month

somnambulance

I mean, right now, 2026 is a pretty quiet year for releases for me, so I’m hoping we get a public beta following this. I’m truly rusty at FPS, but I’m sort of jonesing for what Bungie used to be able to do with Halo, given current events. I dunno. I want a good multiplayer experience that feels new and I like the style they picked for this one in the first trailer. I’m delusional, I guess.
