Call of Duty x Battlefield 6 PS5

Activision executives reportedly aren't worried about the competition today's new release, Battlefield 6, poses to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, but every move they have made in the past few months suggests they have at least one nervous eye looking over their shoulders.

Treyarch is trying to please its hardcore fanbase by addressing community problems prior to launch. It's promised there won't be any stupid character skins, the Carry Forward feature has been turned off for Black Ops 7, and many welcome changes have been made to aim assist and the Vault Edition designs for Operators.

Now, it's tackling probably the biggest pet peeve of all: skill-based matchmaking.

It's now been confirmed Black Ops 7 will launch with "minimal skill consideration" following the Open Moshpit test in the now-concluded beta. This means you could be teamed up with or play against anyone of any skill level, rather than always facing a squad around your ability.

The latter has become a common complaint amongst the hardcore community, as it means you always have to be on your A game if you want to win multiplayer matches, rather than having a relaxing few games. The developer will be hoping this move sees Black Ops 7 mark a return to the glory days of Call of Duty, when high-level players would earn huge kill streaks around the Christmas season, as newcomers booted multiplayer up for the first time.

In addition, lobbies will remain persistent in Black Ops 7, instead of disbanding at the end of every match and making you matchmake into a new lobby again.

Releasing today, Battlefield 6 essentially has the floor to itself for a month. Black Ops 7 isn't out on PS5, PS4 until 14th November 2025, so it'll be interesting to see how the two compare once they're freely available.
