Sony’s throwing all its chips in the anime basket – and it’s paying off big time.
Fresh from the record-breaking success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle earlier in the year, the new Chainsaw Man movie is cleaning up.
In fact, the Reze Arc is currently top of the US Box Office, beating out the new Bruce Springsteen biopic among others with an opening of around $17.25 million. Its global take now sits at over $100 million.
This follows the success of the aforementioned Demon Slayer film, which set a US Box Office record for the genre by taking home over $70 million during its opening weekend. Its global gross now sits at around $667 million.
Sony subsidiary Crunchyroll distributed both movies globally, as the company increasingly ups its emphasis on the genre.

Late last week, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki ruled out an acquisition of troubled media giant Warner Bros, saying his company wants to focus on “anime and games”.
He added that “anime is just dawning right now and will continue to grow by double digits for a while”.
Looking at these Box Office numbers, Sony’s bet is increasingly looking like an absolute masterstroke.
