As Final Fantasy fans wait patiently for the third instalment in the grand FF7 Remake project, the trilogy's director is clearly happy with the upcoming RPG.
Speaking in an interview during Brazil Game Show 2025, Square Enix's Naoki Hamaguchi commented on the remake project and what he expects of the reaction to the third game, which currently doesn't have a title.
He explains the reasoning behind splitting Final Fantasy 7 into three parts, saying the remake could've "cut some parts and turned it into one game" — but that the fans would "never have forgiven us". To realise the full extent of the game "using new technology", they decided to make it a trilogy.
With Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth out and adored by fans new and old, Hamaguchi is expecting players will equally enjoy the third and final entry:
"Of course, I already have a clear idea of the ending for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3. I think this conclusion will appeal to both those who loved the original and those who became fans of Final Fantasy 7 thanks to the Remake series. I’m confident this new game will be loved by everyone."
There's still a big chunk of the game's story to get through in the final part, so the third game could be a big one.
Square Enix has previously said development is progressing smoothly on the game, while Hamaguchi himself has said Rebirth is doing very well after fan concerns about its sales numbers.
It's difficult to determine exactly when Part 3 will be done; there was a nearly four-year gap between Remake and Rebirth, so it could still be a few years until we get to play it. However, it's possible the team could turn it around slightly faster having now produced the previous two titles.
Whatever the case, Hamaguchi seems pleased with how it's shaping up, and reckons everyone will love it.

I like the confidence. Time will tell if that’s true though. Hamaguchi seems to have underestimated the fickleness of gamers. 😅 I’ll be very surprised if everyone will love it.
Hahhhahahhaha, good one.
The previous two were extreme trainwrecks, I can't imagine a single way that could save the third installment.
I didn’t particularly enjoy Rebirth because it felt too long, mostly due to the mini games. It is a quality game, but my opinion is that it’s just ok, not great. Xenoblade Chronicles has become my favorite JRPG series, and those games are crazy-long, too, but I enjoy the journey so much more.
Not as long as any Chadley type characters with tedious, immersion breaking, waste of time arena battles are still in the game and swinging the buster sword at him doesn’t do anything it won’t be.
@betasector 84-92 on Metacritic - yeah, “complete trainwrecks”.
Rebirth was my GOTY last year, I have complete faith in SE to stick the landing with Part 3, obviously it's not going to be for everyone, but it will show respect to original game. My prediction for the title is FF7: Repose.
@Darude84 I can't with those people....
@betasector is the trainwreck in the room with us
@betasector Looks at your comment history, all negative all of the time OK, that tells me everything I need to know.
I've really enjoyed what they've done with the remake, though Rebirth's emphasis on mini-games did go overboard a bit. I'm hoping they've taken that feedback on board and can find other ways to add substance to the game.
I'm really excited to see what they do with the story next as Disc 2 was where the story really kicked in to gear.
Like...EVERYONE everyone!?
"Conflabbit, these vidya game things are ruining the minds of the kids, I tell ya. They should ALL be banned, every last one of 'em! Except for that last part of the Final Fantasy 7 trilogy, I loved that one!"
"The friend of everyone is the friend of no one"
Wait, that's Aristotle. Never mind.
Has he met some of the people on this site 😂
I appreciate the confidence. I have no doubt the game will be fantastic. Hopefully, there aren’t an excessive amount of mini games, but even if there are it won’t be that big of an issue. Bring on part 3 — we still have a ton of things we need to see.
I'd love it a whole lot more if they cut all the crap with the whispers out.
In fact, give me an abridged version, that gets rid of all the faff, and runs closer to the story of the original, and I'd be immensely happier.
'Will be loved by everyone!'
Sounds like the sort of silly comment certain people in politics would come out with...
The amount of Story that needs to be covered in part 3 is gona give people that never played original a real case of whiplash. Mideel I am waiting.
is it gonna be turn based and include the entire OG final fantasy 7?
THEN NO
Not sure if there’s another game set to release that has a higher likelihood of being a 10/10 in my opinion. I’ve loved the last two games, both GotY tier titles.
Take out the excessive mini games and Rebirth will be loved by most people too. It's my only gripe.
@Darude84 Whatcha talkin' about? Remake and Rebirth are clearly Mindseye level of trainwreck... /s
@naruball Has Aristotle been cancelled too? I can't keep up /jk
@J2theEzzo
I never played the original.
I bought and played Remake, and there were things I just did not like about the story - After speaking to people, it turns out all the things I didn't like were changes to the original; and conversly the things I did like were part of the original.
I didn't bother with Rebirth at launch due to the performance mode graphics, but that issue has now been solved by the Pro version, yet I still haven't bought it because of my feelings about the story - I think im waiting to see how part 3 is received before deciding on part 2.
@Darude84 Rebirth on Steam: 77% overall, 71% recent positives. GOTY material.
Can’t wait to fight Sephiroth, Jenova, the Turks, Rufus and a bunch of other characters for the 3rd or 4th time, do long qte sequences and beat Jules again at whatever exercise he fancies that day!
Part 3 is probably one of my most anticipated games. Nostalgia definitely played a huge part in me enjoying the first two so much. Getting to Cosmo Canyon and seeing it in full 3D with the music kicking in… loved it.
I loved Remake, I'm loving Rebirth even more, so I don't have any doubt I will have a blast with Part III. Those games are extraordinary achievements!!
@Darude84 And Metacritic is the lord of judgement?
It's a an opinion aglomerate of dozen of self proclaimed critics.
I don't think the games are complete trainwrecks, but both were underwhelming in my opinion.
And that's the keyword, opinion. If another person thinks it's a complete trainwreck, it's entirely up to them.
Metacritic is no more right than your perspective or mine.
All I can say is I hope so. I really hope so. FFVII is my all time favourite game, and I was left disappointed after the two endings. Both were fantastic games but they really butchered that big moment in rebirth. Should have been a homerun, but they had to go the weird way.
@Kiefer-Sutherland I'm in the Cosmo Canyon part, and wow, it's so beautiful!!
@1UP-HUSKY FF7 og is also my favourite game of all time, all I can say on the remakes, I really didn't like the "wisphers" at all and the ending to part 1 was a mess, but Rebirth calmed that stuff down a lot and pulled it off.
I have been pretending the sequel didn't exist, for various reasons, but I don't know how long I can keep up with it.
I already hate it
Just had my date with Tifa in rebirth and enjoying picking this up again after I dropped it last year. Is a superb game and I have full faith in the 3rd entry when it arrives in 2030!
The past two games were masterpieces so I got insane amounts of faith in the team.
Haters on the game can keep crying, I was raised on the OG through my older sister and still adore these games, both can exist!
@MJF they remade it with more modern gameplay mechanics. Doubt they will change it for this one. You always have the OG with turn base.
I will not hold my breath. Remake and rebirth were terrible ff7 games.
@themightyant give it time and I'm sure one day he will. He must have said at least something problematic by modern standards 2,345 years ago.
I'm still reeling from the weird graphics of Rebirth. Granted it may be better on the Pro but the entire game looked blurry as Hell even without a drink or several! I tried it recently for a second run through and thought this is still pretty ropey. The story beats weren't as emotional as the original either which didn't help.
I wish I shared this same optimism, but Rebirth left a sour taste in my mouth. To clarify, I don't hate the game by any stretch (Queens Blood, my beloved), but for me it doubled down on the things I didn't like about Remake. Unfortunately this time I won't be there on day one (but plenty of people will so the game will be fine and reviewed great, etc.).
I respect the confidence but there's no history where a Final Fantasy game ever universally "loved by everyone".
So i doubt VIIR Part 3 will be the first FF who will get that achievement, especially when Remake and Rebirth already hated by the purist. Even og FF VII hated by FF VI fans for whatever reasons.
This seems incredibly unlikely but I do admire the confidence.
One thing is for certain. I would never be friends with or have a good opinion of someone who doesn't like Remake/Rebirth. To me, video games don't get any better than that. And if you can't see how great they are, clearly something is wrong with your brain.
@PuppetMaster I'm a OG 7 fan and love Rebirth, also pretty sure everyone loved 7,9 and 10 so FF have done it in the past.
@Oram77 yeah the whispers are something else, I'm not a fan of those either. But who knows maybe something will happen in part 3 that will change our mind about the whispers. And rebirth was indeed amazing, seeing everything from the og completely remade was amazing. Can't wait to see the other locations in part 3.
@Oram77 "also pretty sure everyone loved 7,9 and 10 so FF have done it in the past"
Sure in some alternate dimension but not in this one.
@PuppetMaster Ok brother.... like are you down playing the impact FF7 had on gaming?
Poor guy must have never actually interacted with a "hardcore Final Fantasy Fan". Which is to say, theyre mostly miserable SOB's that hate that it's no longer 1997.
After how they butchered the second one, I call ***** on this. Not gonna bother on the 3rd one.
@Oram77 No, i'm not.
@PuppetMaster Is everything ok?
Can't wait. For me Rebirth is a master course on what a JRPG should play like in the present day. Too many JRPGs are playing it way too safe.
Rebirth never held my attention. I played under ten hours of the game and haven’t picked it back up. When the third game is officially revealed, I might play the game again to be caught up and see the series through in hopes that it gets better.
Eh.
I genuinely loved Remake, and was excited for the second, but outside of the combat Rebirth lowered my expectations for the final part into the gutter. It became clear pretty quickly, and excruciatingly so in the final chapters, that they set up the 'what you know, but not quite' premise of Remake with NO clear plan of how to continue it.
@captainsandman I was being facetious.
yeah, I've bought the OG like 15 times at this point.
would be cool if they demade the remake at some point.
I have no interest in these kingdom hearts reskins.
As a fan of the original game and a fan of the remakes, who's genuinely enjoyed both, this is a bold claim. The remakes have been awesome in my opinion, but they have been nothing but divisive among the fanbase. Glad he's being bold though and I can't wait for part 3
@betasector are you confusing this game with concord.
Considering how mind numbingly terrible I thought the ending of Rebirth was they've got their work cut out for them to entice me into playing part 3.
Obviously he knows you cant truly ever please everyone but i have no doubt it'll be a phenomenal game like the other 2 parts. Can't believe we're almost at the finale
I didn't like remake at all, though some of the art was nice. I found it tedious and the bad dialog didn't help. I found the combat system clunky and not much fun so I never played rebirth. Not much point in playing the 3rd installment at this point.
Considering the problems I had with Rebirth, I find that highly unlikely.
I realized something in going through the comments and on reflecting on my time with it - Rebirth is a Japanese-made caricature of western RPGs. I don't tend to like western RPGs very much beyond the 15 hour mark - I find them boring and repetitive (radio towers...enough with the radio towers...). I cooled off on Assassin's Creed Odyssey in the same way. I have a feeling that a lot of people that are down on this game share the same sentiment.
I agree with an earlier comment in that Rebirth was a train wreck. Critics loved it, and it did well commercially - fine. It's all perspective. It's like watching a match between two teams. A resounding victory for Team A inside of Team A's stadium will receive near universal praise from those in attendance. For fans of Team B though, it's an awful collapse - and I'm Team B here.
@Rich33 The story is already pretty convoluted, with time skips, unreliable memories, mixed identities and so much other stuff - and it works and holds up reasonably well, nevertheless. When you then add a layer of multiversal antics and extraneous characters who control fate, it just seems a bit messy.
I'm really keen to see where they go with the final part, but I'm also glad to see it wrap up — the sheer length of Rebirth really did a number on my enthusiasm to fire it up.
@J2theEzzo Yeah I think a lot of people are sick of the idea of multiverses
@Oram77
Im not the greatest fan of turn based combat these days, but back when it released I really enjoyed FF10. I particularly loved how all of the characters got together and formed a very tight group.
Although the scaling was a bit...suspect.
By the time I fought through the last main game section and its bosses I must have been way over powered, as I just walked through them all - the most devastating option I had, the aeon Anima and its super, were just redundant as everything literally went down to a couple of sword slaps from Tidus.
Then, in post game I found (by accident) the dark version of Valefor who wiped out my world saving team like they were a bunch of idiots who had just spat in supermans face, after saying bad things about his mother!
Just hope they don't go hardcore on the plat trophy like they did it on Rebirth.. those brutal / legendary VR challenges were insane along with 7 star hotel trophy
Please let me keep all my items and weapons and my queens blood trading cards.
It better because i didnt like ff7 rebirth. Too many annoying minigames plus jules cheats
@Fatewalker
Skill issue...
@BansheeNorn Classic take! Sure thing, you might be a world star class gamer.. If you didn't like the game, I assume you didn't even got the plat, hence most likely you don't have an idea what you are talking about
Tone deaf much? Lol. Just like Rebirth, the game will be mostly good with an ending so horrendously bad it will sour the while experience. Everyone will hate you for it.
I'm gonna predict the future...FF7 3 fails to meet Square Enix's sales expectations...
There's going to be a lot of people hating this. Its inevitable.
@Kiryu-Chan that's one Patcher-level prediction XD
While I understand taking an optimistic approach to your work as a way to ensure you’re giving it your all, the comments here alone unfortunately highlight that ultimately his goal of pleasing both newcomers and veterans likely won’t happen. Even if the final product is the best it could be (and going by the two prior installments there’s a decent chance it’ll get reasonably close to that) there’ll be people mad about it for not being “turn-based” (either using the exact same atb system as the original 7 or just a turn-based system in general) while others will criticise it for other changes it’ll make to the original. Even when it’s adapting elements faithfully, there’s potential problems due to either imperfections in the source material (sorry og FFVII fans), or complications with being adapted into a three-game story (I should add I’m actually overall in favour of the multi-game approach here, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to ignore any challenges it brings) so either way, it’s going to annoy a few people.
Still, trying to look on the bright side, if he feels like this will “please everyone” that at least implies he’s satisfied with the game overall, so at the very least it sounds like the development process wasn’t a particularly hazardous one, which is at least something imo.
If they work on perfecting this game too long, I'll either be 50 or physically unable to play the game...
What does that mean turn based battle system lol, my girlfriend got me part 2 last year for father's day it's still sealed. I hadn't even played part 1 but I finally started this year got to chapter 6 and then quit. I was considering in buying it last night but I think £15 for it now it's too much for a game that's old now and to be honest I wasn't a fan when it came out of what they did.
The original will always always be the best for me over this remake anyday, the whispers and the timeline BS really makes me feel that it's just to satisfy the new players and a big f U to past players
I'd love to have played that original version with the improved spirites think it's a mobile game
I'll "BEE" checking out the game upon release! (B for Barrett)
Nice confidence, but I doubt that will happen.
I'm looking forward to it.
