Unexpected PS5, PS4 Fighting Game Inspired by Avatar the Last Airbender Revealed for 2026 1

Bet you didn’t have this on your 2026 bingo card, huh?

Gameplay Group has announced a new one-on-one fighter inspired by classic animated series Avatar the Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, slated for release on both the PS5 and PS4.

(Yes, Sony’s last-gen system is still getting new releases!)

Here’s what the official blurb says about the game:

“Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a fighter rooted in the spirit of elemental mastery. Designed for both newcomers and veterans, it channels the energy of classic fighting games while breaking new ground in movement, style, and combat expression. Built with a focus on fluidity, responsiveness, and online integrity, the game invites players to discover what it truly means to fight with purpose. Hand-drawn in 2D, it is crafted to preserve the style and expressive animation of the original series.”

The trailer is pretty impressive, and there are moments where animations look straight out of the Nickelodeon show. However, we think the backgrounds are a little bit too flat and could use some work.

The full game will feature 12 playable characters, with the promise of more via a Season Pass. You’ll also be able to pick support characters to further hone your strategy in combat.

Alongside a full-length single player campaign, the dev is also promising “best in class net code and crossplay”, so it clearly knows what’s important for a modern fighting game.

We’re not the biggest fans of Avatar the Last Airbender personally, but we’re always down for a great new fighting game.
