Sony wanted to buy Bullfrog, the legendary UK studio founded by Peter Molyneux.
As part of a 30th anniversary piece published by The Game Business, veteran PlayStation producer Martin Alltimes revealed that the platform holder came incredibly close to adding the Theme Park maker to its stable of studios.
He revealed:
“One of the best kept secrets is we almost bought Bullfrog, Peter Molyneux’s company. Peter pitched Dungeon Keeper, a game that never came out called The Indestructibles, and another thing. At the end of it, we decided that it was easier and cheaper to buy them.”
It’s believed that, on the back of Sony’s offer, Bullfrog’s managing director Les Edgar immediately contacted EA to see if they’d make a counter-bid. Molyneux was on fire at the time, so the publisher simply couldn’t say no.
Bullfrog would go on to release a string of other hits, including Magic Carpet 2, before Molyneux eventually departed. He would later create Lionhead Studios, which was eventually purchased by Microsoft.
Molyneux is obviously known for his “pie in the sky” game concepts, but it’s not hard to imagine what Sony saw in him – especially during the 90s, when everything he touched turned to gold.
We suppose history would have been very different had he and his team been added to Sony’s stable of first-party developers.
Perhaps he would have taken a great interest in the EyeToy, and pitched a project named – oh, we don’t know – Project Milo?

For all the flak this guy gets, he was involved in so many great games back then.
They dodged a bullet like Neo!
Yeah thank god that didnt happen
I can remember playing Populous, on the Amiga back in 1989 or 1990? That was an incredible game.
For his sheer inventiveness and creativity, Peter Molyneux is quite rightly a legend.
I never did play Fable, though. But there is talk of a remake coming out soon, right?
Sony really dodged a bullet with that one.
@Matthewnh Fable is hugely nostalgic to me, and seriously one of the best RPGs I've ever played (even by today's standards.) I know it might be hard to access for some, especially exclusive PS gamers, but it surprises me that some people have just never touched it.
It's available on Steam and can probably be run on an advanced potato. Highly recommended.
As for the remake, I'm not sure about that. There's the reboot, which will probably just be an out and out new game, and Anniversary, which came out a good while ago.
I would like to see this in Black and White please
Bullfrog would probably have succeeded better if managed by Sony rather than Phil Spencer. Now you have other studios profiting from the legacy of the Theme games his team created.
I like Fable but this guy strikes me as a very difficult person to work with.
Bullfrog was my favorite developer in the 90s, shame once ES got ahold of them and ruined it. If Sony did aquire them, then maybe we will still be talking about them
This isn’t a secret?
I swear Colin from LSM said this years ago 😂
Fable 1 and 2 are great. But it’s not because of this guy. Hes a quack and has contributed little to the gaming community beyond being the guy who made WAY OVERHYPING your game popular.
Got to wonder how different PlayStation would be with Molyneux’s input. Got to wonder if he’d still be striking gold like Kojima still is or like hopefully Ken Levine does with Judas. Say what you will, but the auteurs and idiosyncratic minds in gaming make for a far more creative and interesting industry.
I really loved Populous, Dungeon Keeper and Syndicate and at the time I would have been thrilled if he joined PlayStation studios.
But in hindsight Sony lucked out. I didn’t care much for Fable in part because it wasn’t the game he promised it would be and Molyneux’s tendency to overpromise and underdeliver has only gotten worse since then. He wasted a lot of MS’s money then once they got rid of him started swindling people on Kickstarter and via NFTs.
The only Peter Molyneux game i ever played is Fable 1 on PC and that was eons ago. I don't remember much about the game beside the character design looks bland / ugly af and the combat was kinda fun.
I guess Sony is lucky that they didn't get Peter and his studio. The guy didn't make anything big since he left Lionhead.
I was never really a fan of this man. I used to be a 2 console guy, but Fable doesn't hold any nostalgia for me, never played them. When's the last time this dude put out anything truly AAA and meaningful?
@StitchJones fable 2
Regardless of his overall hype mentality and later NFT shenanigans; Molyneux has put out some absolute bangers in his time. Dude is a legendary figure in the gaming landscape.
That would be interesting and weird at the same time.but Sony should of buy crash bandicoot back then Word up son
@HRdepartment lmao really? so its been ages in other words?
This guy gets so much praise whereas true auteurs like Jeff Minter deserve it more. Jeffage is a legend.
@Jammer Jeff is absolutely a legend, but Molyneux's game CV is hard to top. Populous, Syndicate, Fable, Dungeon Keeper, Black & White, Theme Park and more. It's a shame he's gone off the boil the last 15 years and mostly ruined his legacy. I can see why many don't give him much credit anymore, but many of us still remember the visionary he undoubtedly was.
What I wouldn't give for a HD version or remake of Populous. A pity it's in EA's bin of abandoned IP.
@Vivisapprentice Indeed. EA ran them into the ground and shut them down. I can’t see how that was the better option over Sony. More money I guess. I suppose it’s easy to say it was a mistake in hindsight though.
