Update []:
Following the blog post mentioned below, Quantic Dream has now officially announced Spellcasters Chronicles, its competitive multiplayer game.
Here's the teaser trailer:
Spellcasters Chronicles is a free-to-play game combining strategy and action, in which you and your teammates summon creatures and wield magic to come out victorious.
Each 3v3 match is a 25-minute battle in which you must engage in third-person action and make tactical decisions to overcome the opposing team.
The game will host a closed beta on PC via Steam later this year, and other platforms have yet to be confirmed.
Original Story: Quantic Dream, the studio best known for its narrative adventure games like Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human, is dipping its toe into the world of multiplayer.
In a new blog post on its website, the French developer explains its current structure and ambitions, where it says it's no longer a single-game studio.
The team has "doubled" in headcount since 2018 and is now working on several titles, including Star Wars: Eclipse, which was announced nearly four years ago.
One game in the works is a "competitive multiplayer experience", which is of course a big departure from Quantic Dream's usual output.
After years as a single-project studio, we also decided to take a new step. Multiple teams are fully dedicated to crafting the next generation of great games, including something very different, a competitive multiplayer experience, born from the same spirit of curiosity and creativity that has always defined us.
This new title may surprise our fans as it is very different from what we have done so far. But taking risks, challenging ourselves, exploring new ways of playing and telling stories, and attempting what seems impossible, has always been part of our DNA.
We also know how demanding it is to create something new. Earning the trust of players, standing out in such a competitive space, and introducing fresh concepts is incredibly challenging. And since we have no legacy in this genre, we know we have everything to prove — which is why your support and feedback will be essential. Together, we believe we can create something truly unique.
Overall the post is fairly vague on details; it sounds like Quantic Dream has seriously expanded over the last few years, and it has been publishing a selection of external games, such as 2024's Dustborn.
The announcement of a competitive multiplayer game is a curveball, for sure — we'll be very interested to see what that looks like, but we don't expect to see it for some time yet.
Anyway, interesting stuff from the David Cage joint. Are you excited for a multiplayer game from Quantic Dream? Tell us in the comments section below.

That sounds like a really rough change and I do not see it going well.
Raw gameplay has never been a strength of this studio, so this is 100% a wait-and-see situation. If they can marry their narrative strengths with compelling gameplay, it could be pretty cool, but narrative multiplayer games typically have an uphill battle.
I look forward to the gameplay reveal in 2031.
So are we competing to see who can say "JASSSOOOONNN" the most?
Oh god damn it did they not see what happened with Remedy's multiplayer game? Double down on what you've been great at, what's given your studio brand recognition. Don't waste your resources on a title that's competing with every other multiplayer game out there.
The nice thing about story focused games is once you're done you can move onto the next thing. There's an entire generation who is into online multiplayer but they will always and forever compete on players' time, who usually only do one or two at a time for ages. Story focused games are great because after they're finished gamers are ready for the next one. It's such a shorter time commitment.
Maybe I'm rambling, maybe I'm old, but as a dad with a full-time job I just have no time in online gaming. This isn't 2007 where I could spend 6 hours in Sunken Temple fighting it out
This is gonna fail, big time.
When will studios learn...
So much wasted time and resources ...
@AdamNovice you beat me to it!
Oddly, I just bought Fahrenheit in the recent sale and having not played it since it's launch on the OG Xbox, boy is it gloriously terrible. The emotional scene when Lucas' ex comes over and he's got Thus Spake Zarathustra as his bedside reading is when it fully clicked that this was in another realm of nonsense in regards to pathos. Never has 'Self Overcoming' sounded so apt as a double entendre.
I did geniunely like the narrative in Become Human though. It was far less heavy handed in it's themes.
LOL this will go down REALLY well
Edit: Wow, that looks super generic. Did Quantic Dream get an AI chatbot to generate this?
Honestly, I'm curious what they'll do.
I loved Detroit become human but I just can't see them doing a good mp game but will nonetheless keep an eye out and hopefully be surprised.
Is this not just an excuse for David Cage to call gay people f***ots over the mic rather than in public?
Well they published Dustborn and doubled their headcount to expand into multiplayer where they have no experience. Its clear the people with MBA’s but no understanding of gaming or appeal are running the show now. Wonder when it gets them shutdown
another game to die within 6 months -_- Just make single player games my god
I feel like Quantic Dream has dropped off heavily as a studio since Become Human. I loved their earlier games, but I think they’ve pivoted in a really weird direction after basically mastering a very niche and specific genre. It’s a shame because no one makes Heavy Rain style games anymore and it feels like there could be a market for it. This news just proves that the studio doesn’t understand why they had success before or who their audience is.
The PS Studios were forced by their publisher SIE to burn their fingers with multiplayer games. Who forced Quantic Dream?
In such a demanding competition these days, mediocre products (especially multiplayer) just have no chances. Why not sticking to what you are really good at?
Multiplayer game???
What the hell is happening with QD???
Gameplay has always been the weak point for the studio, & one would think they're cognizant of this. Hopefully they don't throw a gazillion dollars into it and budget it responsibly, like Remedy did for Firebreak.
I think everyone except the developers can see this failing bad especially with their past games as well being mainly limited single player obviously all they can see are money signs across there eyes id bet my house this fail
@AdamNovice SHAUN!!!!!
"Are you excited for a multiplayer game from Quantic Dream?"
It's always nice to have a good laugh, so yeah, can't wait.
Good on them for experimenting and trying someone outside of their wheelhouse, but damn, this is hard to see finding an audience.
Hopefully they prove everyone wrong!
Has Quantic Dream hired some ex-Bungie staff from their "advisory group" to Sony?!🙄😂
Nevermind Disney has managed to devalue the Star Wars brand enough that outside of Respawn's efforts can't help but think they'll face an Ubisoft like flop!
Shame...enjoyed the likes of Heavy Rain & Detroit Become Human.
Well this will be a flop, lol. Soon as I read F2P I was out.
I would have preferred Star Wars Eclipse instead 🤷🏼♂️
@Dan12836666 I was thinking, surely if it's a multiplayer game it will be like Supermassive with their coop interactive games like their DA games, but then I saw "competitive." Lol
I just watched the trailer and the gameplay looks...kinda unique? But a 3vs3 with 25 minutes time limit /match sounds like too long.
But i don't think i'm the target audience for this game. So, good luck to QD.
Come on now we want more single player game.not free to play.word up son
@Max_the_German Quantic Dream was acquired by NetEase in 2022, so maybe they're the ones making them do it. NetEase does primarily publish live service games, after all.
Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Too bad, Too bad!
But seriously this is depressing. You just KNOW David Cage is grinding his teeth in frustration.
@Questionable_Duck I forgot Netease bought them. Now it makes sense why they made this MP game.
@Nepp67 ye lol I know multiplayer games can be great but I cant see this developer pulling it off with their past games thats for sure and free to play its basically live service crap then
quit screwing around and keep developing Star Wars Eclipse
Oh no... Not another free to play live service 🫣🫣🫣
oh god! using that neatease money well i see. i assume this game was a stipulation and part of their contractual agreement in getting acquired. it looks like the most generic AI slop imaginable. clearly quantic dream really did not want to make this trash. looking forward to star wars: eclipes, though, if it ever gets released
This was likely a huge mistake.
@AdamNovice If they implement a dedicated button so one of the characters can say "Jasssoonnnnn!!!!" at any time during matches, i'll buy this game just to run around and spam the "Jason button"
It's turning into a Quantic Nightmare.
I predict this would do better than Concord but worse than Suicide Squad
Not to be that guy but... can they just give us an update on Star Wars Eclipse instead?
Ok, another multiplayer... NEXT!
Is another NetEase studio now. I can hardly blame them for trying as a Star Wars game these days is no guarantee and I have to imagine the licensing is expensive. Still a shame because I loved Become Human. Hopefully NetEase will let them continue to make the games they are known for but at this point, does anyone even remember them besides us old gamers?
I'm sure this won't fail at all. Somehow I managed to type that without laughing too hard.
It's a 3v3 MOBA. I don't understand why companies shy away from descriptors that succinctly describe what players should expect.
Battleborn did the same thing by inviting comparison to Overwatch, which it did not resemble in gameplay nearly as much as people claimed, and it muddied the entire discussion about what it actually was, which certainly helped kill the game by not attracting the players it should have (MOBA fans).
Another example of why live service games are the worst!
Live service games are lazy, greedy, time cannibalizing slop.
Like why???....
I wish failure upon this pile of garbage! I'm sorry I will protest with my wallet.
Wow that just looks like all the others games that look just like this
Fahrenheit indigo prophecy
heavy rain
beyond two souls
Detroit become human
then this why?
I get why companies chase live service multiplayer because regardless of what anyone says, it is where the money is at. That said I can't see this succeeding as they don't have the pedigree to make this genre of game.
I have really enjoyed everything Quantic Dream have done, all the way to back The Nomad Soul, which was utterly compelling just because of how bizarre it was.
I hope this works for their sake, but I just think this is a bad call on their part and will probably backfire.
@ItsAlwaysSunnyyy 100% with you mate! Since my little on came, gaming is a rarity! So much better to have a single player focused game.
This seems like an incredibly bad idea.
As people have pointed out this is dead on arrival. Whoever decided this was a good idea will inevitably not face any of the repercussions when this bombs catastrophically though.
