Re: Of Course The Last of Us 2 Is Being Review Bombed

@Scollurio your point is understood but if a disappointed fan awarded a game 0/10 primarily because it didn't meet their expectations, I would still consider that to be churlish and petulant.

Case in point, I "waited" something like 18 years to play Shenmue III and I was somewhat disappointed with the way it turned out and thought the ending was somewhat cheap. However, despite my disappointment I would still rate the game a 6/10 as I enjoyed parts of it, it was still definably Shenmue and even in my disappointment, I refuse to disregard the work of hundreds of people over many years and reduce their effort to a zero.

@Scollurio the point on the article isn't saying people aren't entitled to their opinions or it is wrong to like the game. What's it pointing out is that there are hundreds, if not thousands of people "reviewing" a game they haven't even played and have no intention of doing so and if nothing else, that is disingenuous.

In saying that, for anyone to have played the game and scored the game zero is facile or indicates the only scale of measure available to that person is zero or ten and that person is not capable of proper or fair judgement.

@TooBarFoo fair points and you know much better than I do but I think we need to see a technical breakdown before concluding it will run as hot as you fear. I guess that might be why Sony is predominantly showing it in it's vertical orientation so people won't think to cram it into their entertainment set-ups.

I think it's fantastic. If i close my eyes, I can vividly recall the PSONE, PS2 and PS3 but the PS4 barely resonates. The PS5 is clearly going to be divisive and I think it will be a lot more impressive in the flesh, but I feel Sony have done a phenomenal job with the design.

@Tharsman trust me, I'm not so high - minded to think that way and I'm always happy to listen to multiple perspectives and change my stance when wrong. In the case of the PS3 and BC, the proof is in the pudding - the removal of the latter had no negative impact on sales (worth noting that only ps2 support was removed).

Additionally I'm a proponent of BC and would be ecstatic if a fully-featured BC function was implemented. At the same time I'm pragmatic enough that if Sony chose to only include the purported ps4 BC and focus the rest of their efforts on ps5 software, I would not feel I'm being hard done by.

@Tharsman I'd be careful about the definition of heavily criticised. Certainly a vocal minority were upset but the reduced cost that came with the removal of BC (and other factors) did wonders for sales.

I'm an old-head and I try to look at things as objectively as possible. BC is a nice-to-have for sure but it's not a defining feature by any means (and I spend at least half my gaming time on "retro" games). If we look at the big picture no company has ever done it right over multiple generations although this is not limited to gaming by any means.

Your point about optical media is well-taken. In a past life I supported optical engineers so I fully understood both the similarities and the rather costly differences between optical media.

Re: PS5 Fans Are Panicking Over Backwards Compatibility

@Tharsman yes, obviously Nintendo's earlier consoles all featured different media, just as PS1,2 AND 3 did (the fact that they are all optical is noted) and BC is clearly an easier proposition in the digital age.

And you'll have to forgive me for forgetting about the miserable 7800 and it's 1 million units sold and an optional adapter that failed to make any significant impression.

My overall point is that it's interesting there has been a reversal in stance related to BC and it's really only this generation or the one prior that a big deal has been made of it (made all the more interesting considering how quickly games are discounted and how ubiquitous they've become)

Re: PS5 Fans Are Panicking Over Backwards Compatibility

@Tharsman Nintendo did not offer any BC on home consoles until the Wii. NES, SNES, N64 and GC were all completely stand-alone and same for Switch if I'm not mistaken. In fact, you could argue that Nintendo were the first company to leverage their back catalogue and sell "remasters" of older properties. Sony led the way offering BC when no other console maker had previously done so (Atari, no. Sega, no). Interesting that they've changed their respective stances and this is the generation where gamers want to draw the line.
