Re: Reaction: Spider-Man PS5 Debacle Shows Sony Is Out of Touch

badbob001

The important optics with the new console launch is having a good selection of new console-specific launch titles. Offering the original Spider-Man as a standalone would look like they are re-selling an updated version. And then would you like it if they sold Miles Morales as a separate game from that? And offering a PS5 upgrade for PS4 Spider-Man users will promote the idea that the ps5 spider-man is just an update.

Maybe Morales will have some expansions and they can release a complete edition later but selling miles morales as a new Spider-Man game is key for the launch.

Re: This Could Be the First PS5 Compatible SSD

@David187 we don't really know the cost of expanding the ps5 yet because sony hasn't qualified this product. This product may have the required bandwidth, but is that all that is needed? Does having less channels affect latency? Is that quoted bandwidth for sustained operations or just in short bursts? Likely the quoted bandwidth is under the best-case single-task scenarios, but does it perform as well under mixed read/write operations? Maybe something that copies sony's implementation will be more costly. Maybe a simpler but faster implementation is good enough to compensate and be compatible. Too soon to tell.

Re: This Could Be the First PS5 Compatible SSD

@Bamila Don't you have to ensure your saved data is backed up somewhere else, do the swap, and then download the os, saved games, and reinstall all your games? This process makes me think you can not just swap between multiple harddrives to play different games.

My point with the harddrive is that after you upgrade to the larger harddrive, you never use the previous harddrive anymore. So if PS5 upgrades are like that, then if you buy a specific size expansion and later on you need more, you can't just buy another of the same size and you need to buy an even bigger version to hold the stuff from the previous expansion and to hold future stuff. But if the system allows you to swap out the additional storage like game carts, then it's not an issue if all your carts are the same size. SSD is costly and it's a bad investment if you have to replace the existing and then never use it again.

Expanding the ps5's storage doesn't require the existing storage to be replaced so it is possible for them to allow for swapping of the secondary storage without affecting the core function of the system. But if the expansion is internal , then it doesn't seem like swapping is part of the plan.

Re: This Could Be the First PS5 Compatible SSD

I kind of want Sony to come out with their own official expansion options so we are getting exactly the same specifications as the on-board storage and not have to worry about shoehorning a third-party specification to meet the PS5's specification.

And my understanding is that PS4 games can be installed on slower storage so there will be support for storage with different performance levels. So we need some official clarification on what needs to be installed where and what are the pros and cons of that decision.

Re: Dragon Quest XI S Overview Trailer Shows What's New on PS4

badbob001

@ShogunRok Assuming this game hasn't been released anywhere yet, are you able to confirm that the textures are the same as the switch version from just looking at the trailers? Or are we just assuming this because they said it's based on the Switch version? Seeing how users can just slap in a texture upgrade pack onto an emulated game, maybe updating or reusing the PS4 textures is not out of the question.

Re: This Could Be the First PS5 Compatible SSD

badbob001

@thefourfoldroot I don't use wifi with my ps4 and the download is much slower than my internet connection. Most likely the ps5 will use the existing PSN infrastructure so I'm not expecting a radical change in delivery speeds. And while ps5 updates may be more efficiently packed, the size may still increase due to things like 4K-quality textures.

Re: This Could Be the First PS5 Compatible SSD

badbob001

@2cents Xbox's expansion is shaped like a card that can be swap out easily, perhaps meaning someone can swap in a specific a card on-demand to play a game on that card. Since Sony is allowing third-party solutions, it's possible Sony may not be allowing on-demand swapping. So if this is the case, getting a large card upfront may be important compared to getting a bunch of smaller cards over time.

For example, the PS4 allows for third-party harddrive to be added but it involves opening of the unit to insert it and then an involved migration of the data. Not exactly designed to be swappable.

Re: PS5 Game Install Sizes Revealed, And They're Enormous

badbob001

If bluray is 50GB and if Spider-Man is 105GB, then that means either the game is compressed 2:1 on the disk, which is good, or at least half of the game needs to be downloaded first, which is bad. Those that prefer physical media like to believe that the disk/cartridge represents a specific and tangible version of a playable game but not just physical copy-protection for a downloaded game.

Re: PS4 Games on PS5 - All Confirmed Upgrades

badbob001

@Richnj Unclear how that will work exactly. Sony hasn't defined something like Microsoft's 'smart delivery' where it seems to automatically determine which version to use. Certainly the PS4 disk version of a game can be installed on PS5. But if the PS5 version is also available, then what happens? Does something pop up and ask if you want the PS5 version? Is the PS4 version automatically uninstalled or do you have a choice to keep both (may be needed if the progress from the PS4 game is not compatible with the PS5 version)?

Some possibilities:

  • PS4 game owners can download enhancements to support PS5 and there will not be a standalone PS5 version.
  • PS4 game owners can download PS5 version. Interesting thing is that the PS5 version will check for the PS4 disk before starting.
  • PS5 version is considered a remaster and needs to be re-purchased or have an upgrade charge.

This may be a unique situation for Sony where the new console is backwards compatible with the previous generation. I know the PS2* could play PS1 games and the PS3* could play PS2 games, but I think that is from the inclusion of additional hardware and not that the new hardware was compatible with the old software.

Re: PS4 Games on PS5 - All Confirmed Upgrades

badbob001

It would also be helpful to track if there will be a PS5-specific version. If yes, then I may decide to wait for the PS5-only version than get the PS4 version+online-upgrade, which may take up twice the space and you lose out on the new PS5 game case.

Re: Haven Gameplay Shows Fluid Exploration and Turn Based Battles

badbob001

I do love hearing banter between characters, unless it starts repeating too obviously.

Also, is it me or am I hearing hiss and pops during the their conversations? And their voices sound too much as if they are a direct feed from their mics, which makes it sound like they're talking in a very small room. Maybe the dialog needs to be better mixed and blended with respect to the game environment audio so to sound more natural?

Re: System Shock Makes Surprise Return with Gameplay Trailer

badbob001

@Ear_wiG The technology of the time limited the game to mainly tiny corridors and made level designs feel more like a game maze than an actual real life environment. As pretty as this is, it looks like it's still sticking to those original level designs and that could make the game be disappointing to those not playing this based on nostalgia.

Re: Stunning Indie Hit GRIS Surpasses One Million Sales

badbob001

This game is stunning and I've platinumed it but the only nagging thing is that I still can't find the ps4-specific content that was supposedly added. It's probably some sort of easter egg and minimal in interactivity, but any excuse to hang out in this beautiful game some more.

Oh, and an art book is coming out soon.

Re: Soapbox: The Sims 4 Is a Travesty on PS4

badbob001

@get2sammyb Not sure how practical, but the PS4 has a built-in magnifier feature. Then as you swish your head around to scan the screen, you can pretend it's a VR game. Else you can just sit a few feet from the TV but that only works if you don't live with your parents.

Re: Reaction: DualSense Reveals Sony's Unrivalled Ambition for PS5

badbob001

@JJ2 I think the only officially announced feature that is new is the adaptive triggers. Haptic feedback is in the Switch. Microphone was in the Wii and even the famicom. To compare with just xbox, then even the Dualshock 4 has more features such as touchpad, gyroscope, speaker, audio jack (compared to earlier xbox one controllers), and light bar. There was a recent sony patent to improve controller response for online games so that may be part of the new controller. Microsoft says they improved the controller response in general, but that may be to just to catch up to Sony. I've read that the DualShock 4 usually has the best response compared to many other controllers. Of course, some would argue that it's all these extra features in the sony controller that is causing its battery life to be shorter in comparison.

Re: Reaction: DualSense Reveals Sony's Unrivalled Ambition for PS5

badbob001

Wow, I didn't think we could get any more articles from just the few DualSense photos. I can't wait for them to show the underside of the DualSense. Yes, it'll confirm if it has back buttons BUT I'm more interested in the screws used. Knowing the type of screws on the controller may tell us what type of screws are used on the console. If they are common non-security screws, then that may tell us that the console is easy to open and has a simple but efficient serviceable design like the new xbox.

Yes, this is sarcasm. The changes to the controller are evolutionary and not revolutionary. Based on photo overlay comparisons with the old controller, the control placements are all in the same place. To most people, it's basically a white dualshock 4.
