The feedback on enthusiast forums is that Microsoft is being refreshingly open about its next-gen plans, but rumours suggest that Xbox Series X may only represent half of its strategy for the generation to come. Apparently, the Redmond giant intends to introduce a smaller, cheaper alternative to its 12-teraflop beast – and it could put the PlayStation 5 in a precarious position.
Xbox Series S, or Lockhart as it’s apparently codenamed, is said to be a 4-teraflop entry level device designed to play next-gen titles at around 1080p. The emergence of teraflops as a point of comparison has confused many more casual gamers, so it’s worth pointing out that the unannounced console would be more powerful than the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, despite it having less teraflops.
This is because it’ll purportedly utilise some next-gen features, such as ray-tracing and an SSD hard drive. The idea, as we understand it, is to offer the Xbox Series X experience, at a price point more palatable for average consumers. And with the coronavirus pandemic likely to lead to a global recession, it could be a serious thorn in the PS5’s plans.
Sony, as far as we understand it, is planning a single model of its next-gen system. The device will likely find itself sandwiched somewhere between the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in terms of price, although we wouldn’t be surprised if it costs the same as Microsoft’s flagship. Estimates peg both devices at around $499.99, while Xbox Series S could go as low as $299.99.
Microsoft has invested a lot in scaling technology, making development efficient across different models. While the existence of a lower powered Xbox Series X may seem problematic at first blush, it’s worth remembering that developers have spent half this generation developing for both the PS4 and PS4 Pro, and it hasn’t really proved to be a problem.
The jump from Xbox One S to Xbox Series S will be significant, then – enough to justify the box’s existence. And while it won’t be anywhere near as capable as a PS5 or Xbox Series X, the lower price point could prove extremely attractive in a cash-strapped economy. It’s worth remembering, after all, that the less powerful PS4 is much more popular than the supercharged PS4 Pro.
Pair this with Xbox Game Pass, an aggressive subscription which will include access to all first-party launch titles from the outset, and Sony’s more traditional play may look overpriced and antiquated in comparison. The Japanese giant could find itself sandwiched between a more affordable Xbox Series S and a more powerful Xbox Series X, with a software roster that needs to be purchased at full price.
Of course, Microsoft’s strategy could also backfire if it can’t effectively communicate the differences between its multiple models, and with the PS4 likely to receive cross-gen games for several years to come, Sony may still be able to dominate the low-end of the market with its existing system. A price drop is heavily rumoured, after all.
But these are new challenges that the manufacturer may have to overcome. Exactly when Microsoft will announce Xbox Series S remains unclear; the industry seems certain that it exists, but the Redmond firm appears reluctant to talk about it right now. All should be clear within the next few weeks, and communication is going to be imperative for both organisations at this crucial stage.
Would you be tempted by the rumoured Xbox Series S, or are you looking for a full-blown next-gen experience at this point? Which next-gen console are you planning to buy based on what we know so far? Pick your poison in the comments section below.

Gamepass is the key. Multiple devices may work for some markets - such as the mobile market, but i think it could cause confusion launching the 2 next to each other.
But gamepass is outstanding value and im quite envious of friends that have xbox because of it - particularly during the lockdown.
Xbox have played a blinder. Playstation built an attractive platform in the instant game collection at the end of PS3's life cycle. That was huge in making people jump ship. And gamepass will have a similar impact. Microsoft are making a lot of the right noises and i wouldnt be surprised to see them closer to Sony, if not overtake them in certain markets (north america).
In theory Sony have nothing to worry about if their output remains high quality, but they have to stop hemorrhaging 3rd party exclusives like they have recently. Thats been an area that set them apart, so seeing things like Yakuza on xbox and Falcom titles etc going to switch is concerning
I defintley think it will hurt them overall as the Lockhart sounds pretty impressive and as said could come in a couple hundred bucks cheaper. Though it wont sway me personally, I can see a good chunk of people going for it.
I'd imagine that Xbox would probably appear a year into next gen, if priced well enough it could be a great way for people to get into next gen. Looking at it objectively it could put PS5 in a tricky position with the likes of Gamepass and Xcloud on top but Playstation does have strong brand loyalty and a proven recent track record in first party output. Whatever some on here think about Xbox you can't deny how many options they are going to be giving gamers and for very little money. At the moment I'm on the Xcloud beta so can play games that I don't even own for absolutely free on my phone
I find the idea that there's a huge number of people ready to jump on console gaming if they are just given an option that's worse in every way ludicrous.
Worse GPU, worse CPU, and potentially an HDD are going to make this the worst next-gen system by miles, and severely impact SeX games development.
If that wasn't enough, the lack of a disc-drive is all but guaranteed to kill it with the "low-spend gamers" it's supposedly aiming for.
@Rob_230 I have the One X and Gamepass is amazing value, giving me access to games I either couldn't afford or maybe would never have considered buying in the first place. I also know I can take my entire library forward too, even with games from older generations
@Tulipanzo the problem with your argument is that the base consoles this generation are still by far the biggest sellers on both sides
@Tulipanzo id agree with that. Given how many people are declaring playstation 'dead' because it has 2 terraflops less than series x, why would they suddenly become supportive of a machine with less terraflops than Xbox One X (unless they are massive hypocrites)
The exciting thing about Series X is it’s GPU. If they force all games to also support the Series S then they won’t be able to design games to specifically take advantage of that power. I’m not interested in a budget console that’s inferior to the PlayStation five in every way whatever the value proposition is. If it holds back the Series X then it will make me less interested in that as well.
It will have a place when Microsoft abandoned the Xbox One but until then I can’t see why people would buy it rather than the One S if all they are interested in is playing Microsoft games on the cheap.
Ps5 for me. I just don't see compelling arguments that would make me want to switch to xbox.
I also think in terms of sales unless Sony make a huge mistake and i mean really huge like the red ring this next gen will play out exactly like the last.
PS5 for me day one.
Lockhart will be on par with a PS Pro but without Sony's great line up of games so I can't really see the appeal for a box like that, especially when most who want's a new system will compare it to PS5/Next Xbox.
Lockhart is dead in the water imho.
PS5 is BC so we who have been loyal to them all these years can just move on into next gen and reap the benefits of the new system from day one, no low-end Lockhart can never ever make an impact on me anyway. And talking to my friends /workmates/neighbours who are gamers, most have the same view of the future so I'm sure Playstation/Nintendo will rule on and Xbox in the 3rd place as usual.
"Microsoft being refreshingly open"? Wow. Nothing indicates Sony isn't being open. They are practically operating within the same time Frame of the ps4 in the midst of a global crisis and seemingly not trying to capitalize on a pandemic.
Off that soapbox for now. Right now im not planning on buying an xbox, I don't believe long run gamepass is good for gamers. Short run is great for consumers, but for various reasons that outlets won't discuss, could be detrimental. Ms releasing multiple skus makes sense for them to try, but then who are you marketing that to? Not "real" gamers, because we buy the real system. And marketing to casuals only worked for the wii, and was and proved terrible when the wii u released.
I'll get a Ps5 eventually, by the time I've somewhat caught up with my backlog. I'm not in a rush, too many great games, so little time.
@Cutmastavictory i also agree woth this. In the long run, gamepass risks devaluing the product for the sake of pulling in some extra gamers to your platform. If there is a risk that there is less money available in the long run for devs to create the AAA games we demand, then thats got to be a bad thing. And obviously the more people get used to game pass, the less willing they will be to pay for full price releases in the long run.
Ultimately im getting a PS5 regardless - but plenty to tode me over on PS4 for a while yet. Im not ready to upgrade
Btw, isn't Lockhart meant to be a 'streambox' only? If it is, how many is really interested in it in the end ?
@Ryall next gen the CPU is the biggest difference that will enable higher framerates and more advanced game design, the GPU is simply to have higher resolutions and a few more effects on screen, this won't hold back game design at all
there isn't going to be a giant amount of PS4 and Xbox current owners that will jump off immediately or even early to just buy a cheaper 'less good' console, a slow trickle of casuals will buy it yes, also 4k TVs are the standard now, because casuals love 'graphics' and thus resolution they probably aren't going to jump on a HD only console
Xbox S 400 - PS5 500 - Xbox Series X 600
I mean, what were we expecting on the vote system on a Playstation fan site, haha....
The only thing that would ever make me jump ship is if Sony completely did a 180 on their game release style, and overall quality.
Besides, I'm far too invested into my PS4 library, would take a great deal for me to even consider moving. And besides, I like Sony.
It's always going to be PS5 for me, for the first-party games alone.
For everything else, I have a gaming PC, and hence no need for an Xbox of any description. They have few if any first-party games I'm particularly interested in, and anything they may produce in the future will be on PC day one anyway.
It's an interesting strategy, and it gives them a PR victory insofar as they can claim to have both the strongest and the cheapest next-gen console hardware out on the market.
Combine that with pitch-perfect messaging thus far, big games like Cyberpunk 2077 primarily being advertised for that platform, etc. and it looks like Microsoft is ready to start the next generation from a place of strength.
An Xbox still isn't for me, though. I'd rather invest a little more in PC components and have access to a much, much larger library, the ability to customize my play experience (I'll opt for higher framerates over expensive visual fidelity settings every time) and a variety of control options. PS5 will primarily be worth buying for the exclusives it gets in a few years.
@carlos82 Sometimes the inability to render a graphical effect can be game breaking. My computer GPU wasn’t powerful enough to render the flashlight affect on half life 2. Which meant I was unable to get through the dark areas on episode two. If the game needs to run on a 4 Tflop GPU then it won’t just scaleback the resolution it will also mean that some affects can’t be used which will limit the game design.
Hey its not a problem for me. People can buy an SS if they want. 😃🤡
Also I thought Spencer was a champion of transparency hmmm HMMMM?
What's that SS Lockheart thing then ? 🤔
I'm more likely to get a PS5 eventually, but Lockhart could work out well for Xbox. The Lockhart and the more powerful Xbox Series X are going to target different customers, and if Microsoft manages deliver a clear message in their marketing then this approach could be successful.
@crazykcarter they need to do more than a simple rebranding - they need to completely change how PS Now works if they want it to compete with Microsoft's Gamepass. As the service stands right now, I literally have no reason to ever try it because by the time games get added, it is typically several years after release. That means that if games added weren't ones I wanted to play bad enough to buy at launch, I've still probably had the chance to buy them at a substantial discount by the time they get added to PS Now. Again, no reason for me to ever consider trying the service other than to maybe play a game from a previous console gen that is unplayable on PS4/PS5.
Granted it hasn't been as big of a deal that PS Now kinda sucks value wise this console gen, but Sony can't bank on that always being the case.
@Cutmastavictory
Exactly ' Microsoft is being refreshingly open about its next-gen plans' is in complete contradiction with the article.
It's like propaganda works.
@Ryall that's a pretty extreme example that just doesn't ring true in today's game design and technology. You're also talking about a machine that would outperform an Xbox One X on the GPU side coupled with a CPU around 4x as capable. The CPU is a far bigger limiting factor this generation and Lockhart would still blow all current gen systems out of the water.
I guess it depends on how willing the major third-party devs are willing to commit to scaled back versions of the final visions they have for their games.
As for myself, I don't want one. I get the appeal - it will be a low powered alternative that most who buy it will probably use for streaming, but if it comes without a disc drive as the rumours suggest, I'll be flatly against it. I guess I'm old fashioned, but I need something tangible when I spend my money.
Also, if I'm going to spend money on an XBOX next gen I'll be getting the best one I can buy, provided it has games I want to play.
All of this aside, it's a 50/50 strategy - If Sony get the price of the PS5 right, it could end up sitting nicely between an under-powered XBOX and an over-priced one. The average consumer will determine what the best value for money is.
Sod xbox with there lame sales and in-app purchase's ( gears of war ) and realising the new Gears Tactics on pc first and having to wait half a year until it comes to xbox one. And xbox one game pass holders get it first thats a sign of things to come.
Goodbye beloved Gears series broken by greed ( Gears Pop ).
I much prefer my ps4 the sales are huge the games are vast and outstanding and everything better.
@Amusei. I agree with you playa.my backlog of games is a lot.and im still buying new games for my ps4 pro.im having fun right now.im going to miss the light bar on ps4 pro the way it is on the ps5.too many and too little times.and the ps4 is going to be supported for years.word up son
to go from HD to 4k is a 4x jump and the S to X is a 3x jump. It is expected to have the same Zen 2 processor so scaling frame rates down may not be required like devs will most likely have to do to scale games down to current gen hardware. What isn't known though is what CU cores the GPU could have and its clock speeds. There is talk that it won't come with a Bluray player - just a 'digital' only box.
Whether or not someone will decide to buy a HD digital only Xbox when they want a PS5, have all their PS4 games etc, just because its cheaper I don't know. I think its more likely to sell to existing Xbox customers, more 'casual' (I hate that) gamers, those looking for a 2nd gaming platform or for the 'younger' kids bedrooms.
Time will tell of course...
The WiiU launched with two sku’s
Even if the PS5 is less powerfull than XBOX Series X, the deciding factor for me is that PlayStation has VR support.
I'm still 100% in on the PS5. I can get Gamepass on my PC so I'm set.
I'll buy ps5 because it's the only place to play new sony big AAA games like new god of war, new spider-man, next ND games, etc 😃
@crimsontadpoles Yes, and No...
Whilst it's great in premise, depends on developer support, and how this is handled code side. If it's something the developers have to spendtime tinkering with, could end up a complete mess.
PS4 Pro games are largely designed with the pro in mind, and often the PS4 varieties of the game are left with a hugely disadvantaged and limited version, due to poor scaling, and translations.
Will have to wait and see what Microsoft have up their sleeve, could be some ingenuius process they've created for the differential between the two systems.
Equally though, since both console generations are to be supported for the forseeable future, makes this purchase fairly arbitrary unless you're after specifically front end UI adjustments and a flashy new piece of hardware, which to be honest wouldn't be the demographic you'd be after.
I dont want there to be a cheaper xbox as third party device will be less ambitious if they are developing games that include this. At this stage, sony need to do more to get now to compete with gamepass. Throwing online games access in with it maybe? If we are in a situation like this gen where Microsoft has not many major first party must play exclusives, then I'll be getting ps5 first. Otherwise if their first party stuff picks up and gamepass still offers that value and third party stuff runs better, it's hard to look past xbox first and then ps5 later in gen to pick up exclusives. I've always bought a sony console (1-4) within 18 months of release now I'm not sure. Hope they start showing us kick ass games soon!!
This just seems like cashloss for MS. Why would anyone choose this when you can still play Xbox Series X games on an Xbox one?
@ThaBEN wait till you see what they have planned for PSVR 2
@Cutmastavictory @JJ2 To be clear, my personal opinion is that Microsoft hasn't said much more than Sony has. But there's definitely a general consensus online that they're being significantly more talkative than Sony.
I personally disagree, and it's the point I was making in the article really.
This would be a sucker punch to Sony and I could see it being true.
One things for sure though, all the new Xbox consoles naming is starting to make my head hurt...
@get2sammyb understood. I agree with that completely.
I must admit this Lockhart if it's what this article says it is then it's attractive BUT Naughty Dog, Guerrilla and Santa Monica. Oh and TROPHIES.
There have been multiple SKU launches before (e.g. PS3), but Microsoft have a problem this time:
Take Cyberpunk 2077 as an example, as it's confirmed cross-gen. Best experience available on an MS console will be the XSX, which is simple enough.
Compare the X1X and XSS, though: X1X is 4K, XSS is 1080P. Maybe XSS has a framerate advantage, and faster loading, but a lot of people get hung up on resolution (maybe not as many as FLOPS!). How do you message this if you've decided not to have next-gen exclusives straight away, and have either 3 or 4 SKUs on the shelf? What if you've got a 4K TV, but don't want to pay for the premium XSX?
Xbox
Xbox 360
Xbox One
Xbox One S
Xbox X
Xbox One SAD
Xbox Series X
Xbox Series S
I'm not even sure if that's right, I think it is, but I'm more concerned w/ MS differentiating between the naming system than the power.
I don't see what an Xbox Series S brings to the table that Xbox X doesn't besides more confusion.
Here's the thing. If Xbox Series X was going to have several exclusives at launch that only XSX coudl play, then yes, a cheaper model makes sense. But, if as we've been told by MS, there will be no next gen XSX exclusives for an entire eyar, and every XSX game will be playable on Xbox One, then you really dont' need an Xbox Series S until Xbox Series X gets some exclusives that Xbox X owners can't play.
Though as someone above said, if this is a really cheap Xbox Series SAD, then it makes sense for digital only gamers who don't want to buy game or movie discs. But then it should just be an Xbox Series X w/o a disc drive to save people $100.
Too. Many. Xboxen.
Considering this is a PlayStation news website, was this poll really necessary? I could have told you the odds without a poll...
In terms of the xsx lite, I don't think Sony should try to compete with that market price. It is simply unattainable. Just need to put a fair price point for the specs (499-549$) and launch with titles people would want. That'll draw people in.
I’m getting a PS5, if not at launch then within the first year. This news doesn’t change that. What it does do is make it more tempting to double dip and get a “Series S“ (the naming system for these Xbox consoles is maddening) later after PS5. I’ve never owned an Xbox before and $300 might be low enough price point to join in.
@carlos82 The base systems weren't sold as worse versions of the "real" next-gen systems.
Plus, both X1 and X1X have been way cheaper than PS4 and Pro yet sold much worse.
This is not a fair poll though; we're on a PlayStation related website after all.
I might get both, but PS5 will be first and my main focus. I like Sony games. At the end of the day it's more about games. M$ might be trying to change people's focus from that. I'm not sure. At the moment I haven't seen one game from M$ that I want.
I hope the Xbox S isn’t real. It just a hold back next gen. If it does, I hope devs just skip over it if optimization proves difficult or it restricts vision. We don’t an intentionally lower lowest-common denominator. That’ll make the later years of the gen that much more creamy and restricted.
I’m getting Xbox series x and ps5 next simply reason backward Compatibility and on ps5 playing PS4 games only not enough Sony if Xbox series x can do all 4 generations of games then u can do ps1 ps2 ps3 ps vita PSP digital then again Sony want you to rebut all your games again no thanks I get ps5 next year but Xbox series x this year
Don't think it will be a problem. More than likely not going to launch at the same time as Series X (if it's real). If your looking for a cheap entry into gaming you have a year with most titles appearing across all consoles. Most people are not likely to jump ship, it's the new customers they're trying to grab. I just want a super fast load time on Metro Exodus lol
@Tulipanzo this wouldn't be sold as a worse version of the real next gen systems, why do Apple/Samsung sell multiple models of their phones? or how about AMD/Nvidea, should they just sell their best graphics cards then? Make no mistake there will be a big market for such a thing and if Sony did the same I suspect they'd have great success with it too. There will be a lot of people who would want to play the next gen games or want to have both systems but may not want to pay £500, so an option that is much cheaper, maintains it's best features and only real draw back is a lower resolution sounds like a great deal
I won't be getting a ps5 till at least a year after launch so by that point price should be down
Waiting for the PS5 Pro.
PS5! No Xbox needed, I've got a PC that's better in any way then any console M$ is going to present.
PS4 (Super Slim) or maybe PS4 Pro (Slim) will be fighting with the weak Next-gen Xbox.
@carlos82 Of course it blows current gen system is out of the water. The Dreamcast blew the PS1 out of the water. The Wii U blew the PS3 out of water. Under powered consoles at lower price points have historically failed in the same way as overpriced overpowered consoles tend to.
The GPU is what draws the world and is sometimes a limiting factor that prevents the developers from realising their vision. Although given the size of the step up of even the weakest next box’s GPU it’s difficult to predict what problems that bottleneck will cause. Just as it is difficult to predict what problems the lower speed SSD will cause in the next generation.
It will certainly play modern games better than anything currently on the market but what we are interested in is the next gen games has been built for the ground up for the new consoles.
What is funny is when console warriors keep saying PS5 is ***** but then try to hype the Lockheart as a new gen powerful console 😏
I read somewhere, that power of S in 1080p is meant to be on similar level like X in 2160p. That can make perfect sense. There are lot of people who dont need 4K. Im really curious, how can Sony counteract that. Because new S will put ps4(no pro) in its pocket.
Anyway one ps5 for me please!
Outside of the first party games and a few big games the current mid gen consoles are rarely pushed. The potential graphics will be fantastic next gen - I just can't see the vast majority of developers using all of the additional graphical processing power. So a cheaper but better than last gen console is a nice compromise for casual gamers.
I think MS should name Lockhart Xbox Series Y.... I'll get my coat.
My idea is that if your going to buy something you really want. Do it properly
If it takes longer so save then so be it but no point cheaping out then regretting it later settling for an inferior model
@Ryall a GPU only draws what its told to do by the rest of the system, a 6tflop GPU (by today's standards) used for 1080p won't be limiting any game design, only framerates and some extra effects. The Xbox One X GPU is barely idling in games like GTAV and can run RDR2 comfortably at 4K, imagine how it could run it with a decent CPU. An RTX 2060 (which could be in that ballpark albeit less bandwidth) can hit over 100fps on Far Cry 5 at ultra settings and averages nearly 80fps. Multiplatform games are going to be designed with scalability in mind to accommodate all the mid range gaming PC's and laptops anyway
@carlos82 I apologize in advance as this is going to be a long post.
The console and phone markets are wildly different and comparing the two is frankly dumb.
Phones have an extremely wide market, with very different performance needs depending on the kind of users.
Everyone you know needs a phone, but clearly we need different phones.
Cost, screen size, battery life, camera quality, memory size, brand, apps you need to run all influence which kind of phone you need.
I would be screwed with a 150$ cheapo phone, but that's perfect for grandma.

Graphics card (and PC setups in general) vary wildly for similar reasons.
Resolution, framerate, game-type, costs, ultrawide usage, loading all influence the setup that works for you.
My laptop is fine because I use it to read pdfs, but it doesn't run games at all.
A product that would appease both needs couldn't exist.
With consoles, the requirements are a lot more simple: something that runs games reliably enough and lasts long.
A person that buys Fifa and COD and a person that buys over ten games a year both need the same level of performance and reliability. A PS5 will work great for both of us.
Still we might have different prices in mind, and the PS5 might be too pricey.
However there's still a great solution to account for cost: 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.
If you build reliable hardware, you can wait until it's on sale, buy used, get slim models, whatever.
The PS5 will be just as good a purchase, arguably better and certainly cheaper, in 2023 than in 2020.
𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐒: they have a terrible track record with this.
Bought the X1 on day 1? Congrats! You bought their most expensive yet worse hardware of the gen. They literally discontinued it.
MS has three SKUs available right now, both cheaper and/or better than Sony's, yet they are getting beat by both them and Nintendo.

So, who's the Lockhart for?
Somebody that desperately needs next gen right away, but has no actual interest in any next-gen features; or exclusives games since MS will release none for up to 2 years. As long as it's cheap.
Oh, and no disc-drive, the ONE thing people who play games for cheap and then trade-in need.
It's doa.
I’m happy to wait a few years and then get whatever console has the most games I want to play. The logo on the side of the box doesn’t concern me
Not worried about xboxs cheap version of the new console to be honest it's only going to be able to stream games no disc drive so I wouldn't think Sony are at all worried and after seeing my cousins devkit at weekend and the stuff it can already do am even less worried about xbox than before Sony have got this in the bag easy so many things people don't know yet but trust me you guys that get ps5 will be well impressed the feed back from. The control and how it responds is sweet asf and it can charge without a cable 😉and xbox are going to be fuk they have done us once again there going to struggle to break out of America yet agian 😂😂👍💯
@crazykcarter what about making psplus and psnow into one so people can choose to download or stream and then make online gaming free.
I feel Sony needs to adopt a similar strategy to Microsoft using the PS4 as its scalable platform. While the PS5 will definitely have its forthcoming exclusives the price and the fact that every PS4 they sell now is pure profit based upon the age of the platform and throughput would keep them competitive with the potential product plans Microsoft will have.
@Tulipanzo well that's just nonsense, kids growing up today are doing so in an environment of tiered hardware models and subscription services, so who's to say their gaming habits won't follow a similar path? Yes there are budget phones but even the top end is over saturated with vast amounts of models every year, all of which are capable of doing pretty much everything that anyone wants to do. The console market is different but has already been changed in this way by the mid gen refreshes and a 1080p version of a next gen system will work just fine and will still be perfectly playable with those specs. Look at what the 1.84 tflop PS4 is capable of today with an awful CPU and you think something akin to the Xbox One X with a significantly more powerful CPU is going to struggle in a few years to run games at 1080p?
The X1 was just replaced by the S, its fundamentally the same system with the same performance and it still plays today's games, the same as how many consoles have revisions, it's not a dead platform.
As for whether it has a disc drive which is needed to play cheap games, well that couldn't be further from the truth as Gamepass is a cheap subscription service giving access to 100's of games.
It might not be for you, it might not be for me, maybe Lockhart could be for those who for the last couple of years still bought the base versions of PS4/Xbox. The majority just want to play games and don't care about 4K and ray tracing and this will play those games and will be cheaper. Maybe for those who want both consoles, so a cheaper option for one is ideal or even a second system for the home. A few years ago I would have said it was a stupid idea but the world has changed and ultimately it'll be games that decide the success of these consoles. Do you honestly believe a PS5 equivalent wouldn't sell?
lol I don't care about xbox series x or series y
Even if ps5 is less powerful at least it has a controller that I can use and a better line of exclusives and most important of all, I don't have to pay extra for a charger
I will own a PS5. I love my PSVR, my friends are all on PS, and Naughty Dog and a slew of other awesome developers are with Sony.
I do have Game Pass for PC, and it's a great deal.
I think I'll always be a PC/Nintendo/Sony gamer.
I like xbox I have nothing against xbox or Microsoft, I have gamepass for pc so I'm happy with that for now maybe in a few years my pc won't play new games full spec but atm no problems so for me it's OK. Apart from that my heart is about playstation so to me regardless how many consoles xbox make I will buy a ps5 without a shadow of a doubt at launch if you love playstation and playstation is usually your console of choice why would you jump ship? If money is an issue ok no worries but if you genuinely love sony, money is no issue and you will just work hard to get the new console as that's what you love.
I was a little disappointed when I watched the deep dive about ps5 about the different things but it won't stop me owning a ps5 because I look forward to the next console and the features I will have at my finger tips with the create button.
Anyway launch day ps5 still wondering on the colour scheme i have always said i wish Sony did a white console at launch so with the controller being white it has given me hope.
When Xbox makes a Xbox Series X slim what the heck are they going go name it?
Sony has, traditionally; had the exclusives I wanted to play. That's it; I don't care about teraflops, price points or design; I follow the games.
I'm 40 now. I genuinely can't see me buying another xbox as long as i live. I've owned them all and the experience is nothing like playstation. The UI is shocking and the first party library is a joke. I've had plenty of reliability problems in the past as well (always, shortly after warrantee runs out...). so, it will take more than a teraflop or two to turn this old dogs head.
A shelf full of goty, single player games might do it though...
No, the PS5 price will NOT be a problem, because this ‘Lockheart’ console is nothing but a myth, Phil Spencer stated they would only be making one console, their hasn’t been a shred of factual leak or proof it exists. It’s nothing but a pipe dream of Xbox fans. And even if it was real it’s also rumoured to not be very powerful, so the PS5 would trounce it let alone with its games...
No, the PS5 will sell very well indeed next gen, I think better then the PS4 and certainly better then the Series X.
Honestly, I won't be getting either right away. As for the point of the topic, the price hurt Sony with the PS3, just like the price of the 3DS at first hurt nintendo. It needs to be a good price, and even if they lose money at first, they gain it back quickly with Plus, Store games and retail games later...it's all about getting the install base at first. Anyways, I usually end up having all of the consoles anyways, so I'll have a PS5 first, but will also have the X-box. Which one I pick up first will all depend on exclusives, and Sony usually has me for that. I just hope Sony wins this next generation again, and not fall behind like they did at first with the PS3.
Lockhart is simply pointless, at least for a launch console and would assist in killing the brand even further than Phil has. Why? The 1X is 6tf, so if Lockhart is 4tf, the 1X will inevitably be cheaper and since it's getting all next gen Xbox games for at least 2 years, either upgrade to the top tier multiplatform box or stay with the 1X. Sony has nothing to worry about anyway because power means absolutely nothing to gamers, it's the games that matter and Microsoft simply doesn't have the games that you can't get anywhere else.
Exclusives drive competition, they ensure fair industry practices, they are the literal check and balance. Microsoft wants a monopoly which is why they went 3rd party, they are everything that's wrong with gaming today and so are their diehard fans.
It’s undeniable that Xbox’s campaign is going to bring some big selling points. The PS exclusives companies like Insomniac, Santa Monica and Naughty Dog are enough to get me to stay though. They’re video game consoles, and PS always brings the games!
Price won't matter anywhere else in the world but I do think it could help MS in the U.S. market which is more about trends than anything else and right now Xbox has been positioned as the cool thing heading into next-gen.
But there are two potential big factors in this whole scenario. If 'Series S,' is exactly on par with PS4 Pro, it's not really worth it. Also, until everything is made official, there's lots of stuff still on the table... It's possible Sony launches with a PS5 and PS5 Pro with a similar pricing structure to Series X and whatever the weaker Xbox system is called.
I'm currently leaning towards Series X first since it seems it will be the most powerful console and I like a lot of what MS is doing but this can all change depending on what both company's final plans and lineups look like. Cost will play a part too. PS4 being more powerful than Xbox One played a big role in my decision to go PlayStation first this gen but $400 vs. $500 was an even bigger decider.
I have a feeling Sony is doing the opposite of Microsoft in strategy. The PS5 being shown is their base unit and they have a PS5 Pro planned later in the year. Granted this was before the economic mess we're in now so this could backfire in grand form. This would give Sony the edge in both the base and high end units in terms of power.
@carlos82 I guess whether or not it will hold it back depends on the answer to the question why old the graphics cards can’t play the latest games.
If it’s because more modern graphics cards have new features that are used in the way the world is drawn. In that case Series S GPU would be able to run a game the One X couldn’t.
Whereas if the structure of the world is compute intensive in the way that independent from resolution that could pose a problem for less powerful version.
I don’t know enough about the bottlenecks in computer graphics to know which is the case.
There's another to compete with Xbox Game Pass, make PS+ and PS Now being tied as one subscription. I wouldn't be surprised if xcloud will also be tied in with Xbox Game Pass. To be fair, the price point of Series S for $299 sounds appealing to masses, the upgrade you could get from Xbox One S will be significant as well for as long as it'll play next-gen games on Xbox as well.
The power of a console is that it's that one machine for the whole generation. Game developers can program to the metal for that one piece of tech.
There is a reason a pc has a lot of overhead and unused potential because there are thousand of configurations possible.
By releasing a lower spec console Xbox is holding the consoles back in the worst way possible. Even if it is only down scaling, it takes developers extra time to make it run smooth and that ups the cost for the creation of the game and hurts the end product.
And gamepass looks like a great deal but making a game is very expensive and if you want a high quality, game of the year contender game (as Sony had a lot of and MS not) it takes money and I'm happy to pay full price for it.
For the love of God teraflops in a consoles don't mean squat I wish people would stop it with the numbers of teraflops likes it's an OMG thing when it's not.
Unless your doing folding at home or number crunch computing or need something that needs to calculate stuff fast for example then yes but no it doesn't mean anything for a console.
I have been buying playstations since 1994. But this is the end of the road for me. I bought an Xbox before Christmas signed up to gamepass and since then hardly turned on the PS4. The store for buying games on xbox puts Sony to shame. The UI is formatted so much better. The controller which i thought I would find hard to get used to fits so much better in my hand. Also xbox have been so much more open about the new console I trust them more than Sony. Will I miss Sonys exclusive games? Probably not they are too focused on single player games.
@thefirst scalability dosn't hold anything back, if this was the case then PC's would not be used for Gaming, also Xbox has this thing called Smart Delivery.
@GoblinKing86 The One X is being phased out and supposedly being replaced with the Series S (Lockhart) so yes it has a place.
This is like asking if the price of a £1300 iPhone would push them towards Android. A lot of Playstation owners are barely aware that there are other consoles or PC, and yet they "know" (lol) that the PS4 is the best console in the universe, especially for its slightly improved PS1 controller
@thefirst you realize that all the cross-platform games also have to run on PC, and are already held back by needing to perform decently on spinning HDD and budget video cards?
A lot of third party games also traditionally maximize installed base by targeting prev gen at the same time as next gen (like Assassins Creed IV and Shadows of Moldor did at the start of this gen.)
Why can’t the first party also do the same thing third parties do?
@Zeke68 I totally agree except x-box is technically #2 in the console market but if I recall correctly it was 360. This is based on statistics of the greatest consoles of time. It just means there 1st to lose lol.
Honestly I think x-box one was low on the list and was definitely beat by switch.
So to put it mildly x-box is an irrelevant system for anyone who owns a computer.
All there focus has been mmo-fps and they charge you extra to play.
Ps has always had better games and more of them. Since I don't like mmo's or fps, and any game on x-box I might want to play that I can't get on my PS I can get on my computer directly or on steam. So why would I ever buy or need an x-box?
The technology doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if it can do everything 10x faster and do backflips....if it doesn't have anything I want to play I'm not going to buy it. To date x-box has never released a single game I want to play so badly I need to buy one.
PS has at least 5 major titles I'm invested in and at least 4 new PS exclusive games I would want to play so badly I'd run out and buy a Ps4 just to play them. X-box has nothing like this.
Point is as a gamer the hardware is cool but doesn't matter....the only thing that matters is the games.
