Re: Poll: Will PlayStation Exclusives on PC Affect Your PS5 Purchasing Intent?

badbob001

One major reason I play on console is for owning the physical release. PC games are mostly digital.

If PS exclusives are released at the same time on PC, which is what MS does for their own games, then that will not be a good idea. But if released to PC much later, I'm ok with that. This is similar to MS' release of the Halo Collection to PC. My theory is that it is good marketing: PC games are much more likely to be pirated and once more non-playstation users are amazed by the old games, then they may want to get a PS5 to play the sequel. But often with marketing, it's all flash but not much substance, which may explain why the PC version of games often are buggy and not well supported post-release.

Re: There Will Be Exclusives You Can Only Play on PS5

badbob001

I don't think the PS5 will have any component so specialized and unique that would make it difficult to port to another console or PC. I think the days of the ps3's cell are in the past. Any console exclusive would be due to a contract agreement and not a technical reason.

This is because modern consoles use components that are very similar to the ones used on PCs. This allows for some of the development to be done on PCs and also makes it easier for cross-console support.

If PC games can support computers from one with a $150 video card to one with a $1000 video card, then the exact thing applies to consoles. In fact, this is already happening with the xbox1/xbox1x and ps4/ps4pro. The next gen will just add another tier to that range.

Re: Microsoft's Xbox Series X Exclusive Game Strategy May Play Into Sony and PS5 Hands

badbob001

@Nyne11Tyme Don't forget that their games will also be on PC. So I guess if their games can scale to work on computers of various levels of performance, then the same can be done for their 3+ versions of the xbox. I'm sure this will make it much harder to tune the games for best performance.

Maybe they will introduce a buy-once strategy where a single purchase allows you to run the same game on previous and new-gen xboxes. Heck, why not throw in a download code for Windows version.

Re: Rumour: Is the Recently Patented PlayStation Cartridge Upgradable SSD Storage for PS5?

badbob001

@AdamNovice From a cost perspective, a hybrid approach would be best. I rather they put most of the cost on the cpu/gpu/ram, as that can NEVER be updated without buying a newer system (ala ps5 pro) and let us upgrade the storage later. Does it make sense to use up expensive SSD storage for video clips? It would require PS5 games to be designed to allow for part of it to be on faster storage. Then either SSD can be a requirement for the game or if not, then the user can choose to let the game decide or have the user override the defaults. Also, perhaps having a HDD is needed for PS4 compatibility.

Maybe many years later, SSD will be very cheap and so users can pop in a 4TB SSD and migrate everything to it.

Re: PS5's Devkit Looks Like a Monster in Visualisation

badbob001

@wiiware stacking computer systems is a common thing to do to save space. And one developer may need access to multiple dev kits at the same time (eg: multiplayer, different builds, server/client, etc) or the dev kits are centralized and shared in one place instead of being allocated to specific individuals.

Re: Guide: All PS5 Games Confirmed or Rumoured

badbob001

This is also a list of PS4 games that I will not buy because they will most likely be ported/enhanced for PS5 and I will be too busy, in the twilight years of the PS4, catching up on my PS4 backlog. Only afterwards will I be ready to purchase these PS5 games at their new normal price of $10-$20, along with a PS5 Pro.

Re: Guide: All PS5 Games Confirmed or Rumoured

badbob001

I guess this is a living document, but nothing on this list is confirmed or even hinted at. Gran Turismo should be on here as at least that has been mentioned to be running on PS5 dev kit.

Might as well add Gravity Rush 3 here as the developer did say any sequel would be on next-gen...

Re: Rumour: PS5 Will Represent the Biggest Jump in Computing Power of Any Console Generation

badbob001

@darksoul77 If it can really run games at 4K 60FPS consistently then I would be very impressed. A $1000+ rtx2080ti is just about to hit 4k 60fps, but not always. But I'm sure 4K 60FPS of some form can be achieved if details are dialed down or re-implemented (easier to do for a fixed hardware target). But my guess is that it won't meet expectations for all games and games will just get more and more demanding. Perhaps a few years later, the PS5 Pro will achieve the expected performance for more games.

Re: E3 2019: Final Fantasy VII Remake Is Spread Across Two Discs, and That's Just Midgar

badbob001

This is like how they took a small book like The Hobbit or Fantastic Beasts and magically inflated it to be 3-5 movies.

If this game will be split into three parts, that is potentially 6 bluray disks. It must be due to pre-rendered cutscenes and I'm rather disappointed with that since I love to see cutscenes done in-engine. But I suppose it's ok for this game since the characters' looks don't change. Are they pre-rendering the cutscenes are multiple resolutions (eg: 1080p and 4k)? I guess swapping disk is authentic to the original experience...

Is the title of the first game final? Final Fantasy 7 remake? What will they name the later episodes? Remark Part 2 / Part 3?

Re: Poll: What Are Your Thoughts on the PS5?

badbob001

3D audio is a nice bullet point, but I don't think it'll really catch on. For visuals, one just needs to replace the TV, like upgrade to 4K. But for better audio, much more work is involved. You will need surround speakers (and the more the better), an amplifier to connect them all, and have enough space in your gaming environment to sit in that sweet spot between all the speakers.

Most games will end up wearing stereo headphones and while you can kind of get fake 3d on headphones, it's not really the same.

Re: Poll: What Are Your Thoughts on the PS5?

badbob001

The hardware stuff is pretty hard to get excited about since it's mainly the same as PS4 but faster. But that is a good thing since it makes it easier for developers and great for backwards compatibility. When they try to wow us with exotic hardware like what was on the PS3 or Sega Saturn, then you end up stalling the momentum of developers and weaken the quality of the games.

I think an easy way for PS5 to wow us is to throw more ram into it so games can have higher-res textures. I remember playing resident evil 7 and sometimes I would get close to a wall and I'm disappointed when some of the textures are very low-res.

I think Sony needs to make sure it launches with games that really puts in above what is capable on the PS4/Pro. Otherwise, people will just think of it as a PS4 Pro Pro or a Sony's late answer to the Xbox One X.

Sony is one of the few console makers that have backwards compatibility out of the box (ps2, ps3). That stopped with the PS4 so its return in the PS5 is welcomed. I wonder if there will be games that are released for PS4, is supported on PS5 via backwards compatibility, and then later patched to support the enhanced features of the PS5. I'm specifically thinking of late 2019/early 2020 games like The Last of Us 2 or Cyberpunk 2077. Will publishers create PS5 enhancements for PS4 games or double-dip us with separate PS5 versions?

I haven't played ICO but would it make sense (and be fun) to either extend the length of the current game or add more content to the end of it? I've heard that the original game is kind of short.

So kind of like what was done with the SEGA CD version of Out of This World, where a sequel of sorts is added to the end of the first game. They could have the new content be a prequel, a sequel, or even something that runs in parallel with the previous game. Imagine they add content that ties together ICO, SOTC, and TLG, starting the beginning of a new connected gaming universe.
