This issue has been up and down ever since it was discovered on the official website months ago. Back then, all we knew was that those who purchase a physical copy of Spyro: Reignited Trilogy would have to download Spyro 2 and 3 in order to own the full package. With the delay and rumours of multiple discs, some fans were hopeful that this was no longer the case.
Activision has finally clarified the situation. According to IGN, the publisher has said that some levels from Spyro 2 and 3 will be on the disc, but that you will need to download the rest in a day one update in order to have the full games. So, for those with a physical copy who aren't connected, they'll have full access to Spyro 1, and access to some, but not all, of the second and third titles.
This still seems like an odd solution to us. Day one patches are the norm these days, but those updates don't usually have to make your purchase a complete one. We'll have to see how it all shakes out when the game launches on 13th November. What do you think? Please don't breathe fire on each other in the comments below.
Update: Here's a link to a video from Achievement Hunter, which is where the above information originally came from. The discussion about the content download is near the end of the video.

That's it. I'm out.
well i will now wait for it to go on sale, preorder cancelled, really is bizarre
"A subetset of levels"? This is so mad. So basically for Spyro 2 and 3 it's the digital version, without the benefits of a digital version.
For every one of you that says "preorder cancelled" I'm going to buy 2 additional copies.
So mler.
A question, maybe someone from staff can answer this or someone else really smart: have we ever before seen physical releases of single player only games that weren't fully playable without a download?
@kyleforrester87 Then I will be cancelling three pre-orders for every two additional copies you buy though.
@Kidfried That's fine, I'll buy 6 additional copies for every 3 you cancel.
And just so you know what you're up against, I'm the guy buying 10 copies of GTA5 every time someone on here says "duuuddeee I can't believe this is still in the top 10!", so I've been doing this kind of stuff a long, long time.
@Kidfried Well, the Telltale games are like that. The disc is basically a key to be able to download the episodes after the first one. It’s a pretty lousy practice, I agree, but at least for an episodic release it makes a little bit of sense, but not for a game that is supposed to be complete on day 1 of release.
RIP Physical sales.
Seriously? Buy these shoes and we'll send you the laces at a later date... here's your burger, the bun is in the mail and will be with you shortly... thank you for purchasing our game, we'll send you the levels any time now...
@Th3solution Oh yea, I totally forgot about them. I guess those count.
Something tells me they will have a second physical release down the line for those who want all three on disk.
I'll wait. Worst case scenario, I'll buy it digitally when it's significantly cheaper.
Passing this so easily. Might pick it up on an sale. Not buying incomplete game for full price anytime soon
Was buying the digital version anyway pointless buying this disc version
@Kidfried Yeah, even Life is Strange does this too. But again, that’s an episodic. Even when I bought LiS Before the Storm digitally, it only downloaded the first episode automatically, and I was a little annoyed at sitting down and getting ready to play the second episode only to realize I had to manually download each one separately. It was a bit of a pain, but takes some advanced planning.
The issue with this is for people who have poor internet and want physical copies because of a lack of connectivity. I’ve got decent internet, but many throughout the world do not.
@Useyourname Same here.
@kyleforrester87 duuuddeee I can't believe this is still in the top 10!, pre order cancelled 😁
@carlos82 I am so skint right now.
Seriously Activision, why do you hate consumers so much?
I'm still keeping my pre-order. A little download doesn't bother me.
son wtf son .they delay this game for what.is Activision on drugs word up son
Not a problem for me since I plan to buy the digital version but I think this is annoying for collectors, I hope maybe sometime in the future activision will update the disc with all 3 games.
Yes it is an issue for some people! I personally like to return to my favourite games years later! I’ve played FF8 at least once a year since it was released!
You’re essentially investing in a disc that will be useless when PlayStation shut down their servers!
I learned the hard way when I purchased a couple of hundred songs on Singstar for PS3. I took an extended break from PlayStation, returning to PS4. Singstar couldn’t be bothered renewing liscences for a lot (about 150) of the songs and wiped them, they also had no way to transfer purchased ones from PS3 to PS4 AND didn’t even transfer some of the songs over in the first place! It was a mess!
Sidenote, I’ll also never be able to experience P.T because it was removed before I even knew about it! My sneaky 8 year old nephew used to watch the games he couldn’t play on YouTube and once told me, now I don’t HAVE to play it! Is this seriously where gaming is headed?
Listen, power to the people who prefer digital! I miss out on a lot because of my preferences! It’s just that this one hits harder because it’s a remaster of a game I was obsessed with as a kid! I am heartbroken!
@JoeBlogs lets just imagine you live in an area with poor internet or perhaps you even have a download limit and it charges you for every mb you use over that limit and then ask again why it's a big deal for some people?
@SwanPrincess83 off topic but YEAH! another FFVIII fan
So the delay was for fine-tuning the game? Because in that case, I'm totally okay with it. I'm getting it digital on The Green Cross Symbol Console For Third Party Titles That Don't Come To Nintendo (even the acronym, TGCSCFTPTTDCTN, is kind of a mouthful) and that's gonna suffice until the Switch port is inevitably announced. I'm confident you guys are just as hyped for it - Spyro defined PS1 for me alongside Crash and there's no way an inaccurate lineup will change my mind about it.
I'm still puzzled by the digital-only aspect of Spyro 2 and 3, though. I mean, isn't this trilogy being developed as one single game? Then what's the point in not reusing enough assets for the whole trilogy to fit in a single disc? Unless, of course, this is a deliberate move on Activision's part to combat the used game market. Or not. I don't know, I'm not familiar enough with how this kind of stuff affects used games, so in case anyone cares to elaborate on it a bit, I'm all ears.
@FullbringIchigo
Then what are you doing with a Tidus profile pic?
@kyleforrester87
Just how much money do you have?!
@AlexSora89 I got paid a lot by Microsoft to talk smack about Spiderman during its release. I lost a few friends along the way, but it was worth it.
@AlexSora89 because i like Tidus more than Squall (Squalls great too though)
"but those updates don't usually have to make your purchase a complete one."
Tony Hawk 5, No Mans Sky, Pretty much any online game like MGS and any Xbox title recently. There is quite a big list of games that require this. Don't forget Dead Island on PS4 only came with one game and the other was a download, FFX only came with one and the other was digital on the Vita as well as quite a few other Vita titles.
It's not unusual, just not as common.
Yeah this is a real issue for physical buyers and it defeats the whole purpose if buying physical in the first place. Knowing this, I'll likely just go digital for the game, preferably on a flash sale or something. I own the original PS1 games so I'm good.
@JoeBlogs you can my brother for example doesn't have his XB1 connected online because it's for his kids (who are young) and he doesn't want them playing online so Spyro would be useless to him on that system
All this nonsense is going to cripple the Day One sales.
Who want to be the guinea pig for this wacky physical release?
Not me, I'll wait awhile and pay less too. Nice work Activision.
Sigh, this should have been one of my most anticipated games of the year, but I am not going to support them shipping an incomplete product. It will have to be heavily discounted before I pick up this game now.
So what happens if you try to lend the game to a friend? Will they only have access to half a game? Really defeats the purpose of physical copies
So your getting half a game if you don't have internet access?!?! That's utterly unacceptable or should be
@AlexSora89 Problem is even in the original games....every single individual level had it's own aesthetic assets.
So...that's a lot of stuff. Plus two whole soundtracks with barely any, if at all, repeating tracks, for each game.
50GBs isn't enough in this day and age.
@JoeBlogs he could but he probably wont point is not everyone is in an ideal position when it comes to the internet and people shouldn't assume everyone has top of the range speed and unlimited data, depending on the size it can add up to a lot of money if your on a capped tariff, take where i live for example it's pretty rural and we only got fiber a few years ago and even than we are lucky if our fiber breaks 30mbs, on normal broadband your lucky to get 5mbs are you saying that we shouldn't bother playing games because of that? that we should just "deal with it"?, that is something completely out of our control and why should we be blamed just because Activision couldn't be bothered to put the games on the damn discs
@JoeBlogs i don't think Physical media will ever go away honestly, they said Vinyl would die but that's still going today, they said MP3 would completely kill of CD's but CD's are still going so i doubt the next gen will drop physical media although they may try to push you towards digital
and besides the main reason Physical media wont go away is legacy in 10 years time if i want to buy a pS4 game i would still be able to buy the disc but can you say that for the Digital version?
plus there is also the issue with selling your system, if a store can't make money off games for a system then they most likely wont bother selling the system, just look at what happened when XB1's game pass was launched, loads of p[laces stopped stocking the console for a while
thing is physical and digital can and i think will co-exist and one won't completely replace the other but IF you are releasing a game on disc then the disc/discs should contain the entire game not just part of it, whether or not the game would require and patches to fix bugs or if there is any DLC is irrelevant, in this case your buying the Spyro Trilogy so all 3 full games should be on the disc
@JoeBlogs "This really is an online hobby nowadays".
I'd say "They really made this an online hobby nowadays". What's the point of forcing customers to go online with a single player game aside from charging costs of production to the customer himself without selling him the "real" good?
Once developers had to optimize the code to put it inside a limited support, now they can say "Who cares!?! Let them download the rest" or "Who cares?!? Let them buy a bigger hard disk". Half baked games, no booklets, poor testing... Meh.
I recently sold 4 PS1 games for a total of € 60 (Armored Core, Soul Reaver, G-Police and Broken Sword 2) since they are still playable, with their boxes and booklets making the joy of some collector. And now I have the money to buy me a brand new PS4 game while in 20 years our hard disks will be full of useless datas.
I'll wait until they decide to release the whole thing.
@JoeBlogs i can't imagine they are too big for the disc after all the 3 Crash games were all on one disc and this seems to be done in the same way, the only thing i can think of is that the 2nd and 3rd game wasn't quite finished when it had to go to print (this was before the game was delayed) so they put the first game on the disc and added the others as a download BUT if that's the case then they should have just delayed it until it was complete
Typical Activision laziness.
No, I had some honest interest in this, but I don't even want to but it used now. It's unacceptable and cannot stand. I hope the game has terrible sales. We should not stand for it. I'll buy digital if want to activison, (which will never do if it's available physcially, even if God of War was on sale for $.99, I wouldn't) don't make that choice for me. Ahh this frustrates me so.
So the Crash & Spryo physical 6 pack will just be 6 titles screens and 6 virtual buttons to download the games?
Does make waiting on the Switch version a bit easier to take. Maybe they'll just go digital only for Spyro on Switch.
@SwanPrincess83 then what was the point in the delay when it's pretty much the same situation as before? nothing has improved? i've given up on this game now lol
such a loss cause.
@PS_Nation these days all the publishers are attacking physical users and trying to make it's useless, it's like fighting head to head with them, we as consumers shouldn't stand up for that especially for the people who still like only physical.
@JoeBlogs people with limited data caps do unfortunately, those are the ones who are suffering the most with this push giving digital a priority/making physical useless.
@JoeBlogs Good. That's exactly what politicians/industrialists love to hear by their citizens/customers. Sometimes they need to use the force to convince the people (poor countries), sometimes subtle persuasion is enough (rich countries). Why should one be worried about something if his/her belly is full?
Disgraceful...
I canceld my preorder i will play it with a discount maybe at 1/3 of the price. 😁
@kyleforrester87 well buy 4 already preorder canceld. 😁
So Activision are pulling another Pro Skater 5? Oh well, I still have the originals.
@Knuckles-Fajita 2 discs ill pay the €2 extra to print it.
@Th3solution To be fair it does not release it digital first and then release a Complete Edition with all the episodes this way you can have the best of two worlds.
That's a shame.
@kyleforrester87
Are you okay?
@Tako honestly?
@JoeBlogs I still think that using logic is a good thing to do even if everything seems to suggest it is not.
@Knuckles-Fajita Uncharted trilogy in 45 gb, The Witcher 3 + 2 huge DLC in 50 gb, Dying Light + 1 huge DLC in 25 gb... And all those games have a lot of dubbed dialogues. I doubt that 3 Spyro need more space than those mentioned games.
This is sad to hear but my plans haven't changed, still plan to pre-order Spyro Trilogy.
Preorder canceled.
@Knuckles-Fajita
Hm. You got a point there.
@FullbringIchigo
Tidus is a chill dude.
@kyleforrester87
Tell me about it, anytime I'm given a contract and have to kill some random dictator in a small state, generally overthrowing its government overnight, I sigh and say, "it's gonna be one of those days".
A quick disclaimer in the case my previous sentence is somehow taken seriously:

@AlexSora89 YOU ARE LATE.
@kyleforrester87
You think?
@AlexSora89 yeah a bit.
@kyleforrester87
Nah.
@AlexSora89 so very late
