I’m hoping to buy their Escape the Dark Castle game if it ever comes back in stock. I love the artwork in the game and it reminds me of the original Fighting Fantasy gamebooks, in the best possible way.
I’m not really interested in this but it looks cool and should be great for any fans of the game who also like board games.
Not watched the trailer yet, but I’m sad to hear (pun intended) that Isaac will talk in this remake. One of the main reasons I massively prefer the first Dead Space game over the second was the fact he was silent in the first game. In the second game he was dropping F-bombs and it was one of the reasons DS2 just felt like a generic action game. I’ll hold my final judgement until I’ve seen the trailer, from reading the rest of the comments it sounds like the rest is top notch.
@Kidfunkadelic83 ah right I get it now, thanks. Well, I mean now I get what the real issue is (it’s actually the number of Platinums that’s the problem, not the number of trophy lists), although personally I’d still say ‘so what’ if you only get 1 Platinum instead of 2. It would never impact my purchasing decision, and isn’t the fun meant to be acquiring the trophies themselves? But I won’t keep going on about what I think of the whole trophy nonsense! 😀
As for this game, I can’t comment on what this remaster is like (as I haven’t received my copy yet), but I’ve played the originals fairly recently, in the last 3 years, and I couldn’t praise them enough. I just hope these new ones play as well as the originals.
I too was a huge platformer fan back in the day (still am), but these passed me by. There’s something about the whole double jump mechanic from holding an enemy that really appeals to me. It turns it from your bog standard platformer and adds puzzle elements as well as parts that require pure skill and accurate timing if you want to get 100% (which I did). It sounds simple, but they manage to come up with lots of ingenious ways to use it.
There’s also the music. It has a sort of melancholic and eerie vibe to it, quite unusual at times and very different to what you normally get with platformers of the time, which I really liked.
Anyway, I suppose what I’m saying is if you think you might like these games, don’t pass them up!
@johncalmc but if it’s one list with the same number of trophies covering both games, instead of them being split across two lists, what does it matter?
I clearly don’t get trophies (not that I really want to).
What does it matter if it’s a single trophy list? If it has the same number of trophies, just in one list rather than two, so what? I don’t understand.
I know modern games seem to have an affinity for lists, like to do lists in most games these days (sorry, I mean quests).
Then again, I don’t even look at trophies and I most certainly turn off that annoying pop up. I don’t need to know I’ve won a pretend trophy for ‘starting the game’. As Klonoa would say, woo-hoo!
I’d never heard of the Sly Cooper games until I got into PS3 and PS4 around 2018 and got the HD Trilogy on PS3 and loved it! So much so I’ve since bought the PS2 originals, just because I had to.
They felt very ‘Nintendo’ to me, which was surprising considering Sucker Punch are American and first party to PlayStation.
@thefourfoldroot1 AstroBot is definitely top of the list to try, looks to be the best game to play for my tastes. I also would want to try Resi 7 and Wipeout to have a proper first person experience and test my stomach for high speeds (although I reckon I’ll be fine).
I can’t see a second hand PSVR set up for less than £100 which is well beyond the ‘want to try out first’ price point for me.
And with the move controllers, while it’s good to know they’re not essential, to me using VR with a standard controller kind of defeats the point of VR for a lot of games. I get using one for Astro Bot, but for something first person like Resi 7 I’d like to use my hands/arms like I’m really there. Of course it might not matter once I’ve tried it out, but to me part of the appeal of VR is using my arms/hands like in real life (as much as possible), not just using a joypad.
I really want to experience some games in VR (any VR headset) at some point to see if I’d like it or not. It’s not the kind of investment I’d ever make without trying it out first. I only have a PS4 and have no plans to get a PS5 anytime soon, so PSVR 2 is off the table for years. Not sure about PSVR 1, again I’d have to try it first but I don’t like the fact they never actually sold any proper controllers for it. Yes you can use Move Controllers, but they never actually rereleased them did they? You just have to hope you can get some on the secondhand market? Sounds half-arsed to me.
But anyway, VR is something I really want to try out to see if it’s something I’d like, I’m just not willing to spend hundreds of pounds to do so. If I could rent one for a week or something, that would be ideal.
With the PS Classic, the issue wasn’t just that it used PAL roms running at 50hz, but it played them back at 60hz so you got frame skips (Digital Foundry explain it much better!). This made it a much jerkier experience than it should be. 50hz runs slower yes, but they can still run smoothly if output at 50hz.
So while it’s ridiculous they’re still using PAL roms in 2022, the bigger question is whether they’re running them at 50hz or 60hz. At least on the PS3 they ran at 50hz so it was a smoother experience.
I only discovered the magic of Klonoa in the last few years when I played the PS1 game for the first time, and I’ve since played the PS2 game too. Despite having played them recently, I’ll still be getting these remasters.
I’m just glad I own a decent amount of PS1 and PS2 games, and those that I don’t, I can just burn and play on my modded PS1/PS2 consoles anyway. I got fed up of relying on these digital services providing retro games years ago.
Still, I hope they end up with a decent selection of games eventually for those wanting to use this new subscription.
Given how amazing the original soundtrack is, that’s either a bold or stupid decision. I haven’t heard the remastered soundtrack yet, but I’ll assume the latter for now. Happy to be proven wrong.
@shadow2k I do have Blake Robinson’s Synthetic Orchestra Chrono Trigger soundtrack. It’s awesome!
I was being a little flippant with my comment. I’m sure they’ll just make it higher quality or whatever, which would be great. If they do change the composition though, that would be sacrilege! 😀
I’ve never understood trophies/achievements. Like why do I want an arbitrary trophy for pressing the start button or whatever other rubbish you get them for.
If I want to do something in a game, I do it because it’s fun, or there’s more (good) content unlocked for doing it. I didn’t need trophies to give me the motivation to find all 96 exits in Super Mario World. Yet 30 years later no amount of trophies could capture that fun of discovery. Trophy for getting 100 mushrooms! I don’t think so.
Then again I barely buy or play modern games anymore. Trophies, skill trees, crafting, open worlds, auto save, procedurally generated, over the shoulder/back of necks, battle royale, online multiplayer. It’s all just a bit naff.
I have absolutely no excitement for the new consoles at the moment. I’m happy to wait another 12 months before I consider getting one. By then the number of true next gen games might be in double figures
I still haven’t played this game. I’m waiting for the Limited Special Ultimate Definitive Day One GOTY Nostromo Edition to be released with a figurine of Todd Howard. Plus a sticker sheet.
I haven’t played an Uncharted game yet (I do plan on correcting that), but from what I see the trailer looks good. Then again, I enjoyed the latest Tomb Raider film for what it was, so take from that what you will! 😀
@Tharsman do you know how that digital release of the original on PS4 plays? Is it just the PS2 version or did they specifically port it? If it plays better than the PS2 version then it might be worth a punt, I do really like the look of the game.
I hope this situation isn’t mirroring the original game. If I recall, wasn’t the original much better on Xbox than Playstation 2, to the point where it’s a disservice to play the PS2 version? The original is a game I know I’d enjoy but I’ve always avoided it as I don’t want to play the PS2 version and I’ll never own an Xbox.
Ace Combat is a series I really want to get into. I love the melodrama, I recently purchased Belkan War on the PS2 and have the others too. I’ve also burned myself a copy of the English patched Japanese version of AC3.
I just haven’t got around to properly play one yet. Every time I give it a go I’m absolutely rubbish at the actual game! I’ve never been a fan of flight sims, I think maybe I’m expecting more of an arcade orientated game given its premise. I’ll keep trying though!
@sanderson72 yeah I definitely need to give my pro a clean, I’m sure it’s full of dust inside. I do have a dust cover for it but it’s quite impractical to use and I can’t always guarantee the rest of my family will remove it when using the console! Heck even I’d forget sometimes I’m sure. I’ll check out some YouTube vids, thanks!
I’d love it if they did a ‘slim’ type revision of the PS4 Pro to end its life on a high (and drive further sales if the price is right). My current Pro is big and noisy I can’t imagine it lasting very long. I much prefer the standard slim model and would have that instead if it wasn’t for the Pro’s ability to run more games at 60fps and 1080p (I have no need for 4K right now). I won’t be getting a PS5 anytime soon, I didn’t get a PS4 until 2018 and I don’t feel like I missed out on anything.
@kyleforrester87 just make sure you get it from the US store if you can. The EU store version is the US Rom (great) but it runs at 50Hz! So it’s basically in slow motion. I’ve not had this issue with any other PS1 classic. I had to contact Sony about it and after a few weeks of back and forth they gave me a refund.
I’m going to get it from the US store now, I must have Klonoa on my PS3 and it won’t play my ‘Verbatim’ disc version 😀
Good. I didn’t play computer games in my dark bedroom, alone, when I was a child for nothing you know!
But seriously. The only online multiplayer game I’ve ever played was Mario Kart 8 back on the Wii U about 3 years ago. It was somewhat fun, and I won quite a few races, but that’s it. I’ve never played online before or since, and it will probably stay that way.
I used to have so much fun with multiplayer back in the day with my brother/dad/friends. Mario Kart, Goldeneye, Track & Field (never had as much fun as playing Track & Field with my brother and dad). I did not get any of that sense of fun with online multiplayer.
ICO should never be remade. Nothing could make that game better than it already is without completely changing its vision (such as making it fully 3D over the shoulder or first person). I played it for the first time ever just last year on PS3 and still felt its magic. It should be left alone.
Dead Space on the other hand. With full 3D Audio/Binaural support, haptics on the controller and an extra spit and polish on the visuals, could really enhance the already great experience.
Is 3D Audio different to Binaural audio (what they used on Hellblade)? The audio on Hellblade was awesome and I could experience it with my cheapo standard earphones! No need to buy any special headphones.
I’m guessing when they say this 3D audio will work with your current headphones, they are talking about your current 3D audio headphones, not just any old headphones?
Do these upgrades apply to disc versions of games, or just digital versions?
Also, does your TV have to specifically support 120Hz or in general terms can a typical consumer HD TV support it? I just have a bog standard LG 1080p TV. I won’t be upgrading anytime soon, but would love to see 120Hz in action if it’s available to me!
@clvr yeah I’ve come to realise I don’t like open world games. I like the idea of them, a massive open world to explore, but I get bored. I enjoyed BotW to some extent, and that world certainly had the most draw for me to go and explore for the sake of exploring, but I still got bored with it as a video game. Even the Witcher 3. It definitely had some very interesting side quests (and main quest), but I still got fed up of chasing icons and button mashing.
And what is it with crafting? Why do I need 25 rose petals and 15 rancid monster organs to make 10 squirrel nut sacks, which in turn I need to combine with 20 leather straps and some pigeon feathers to make a sword and a helmet? How is that ever fun?
The best game worlds I’ve played in are generally the most linear: Shadow of the Colossus, Hellblade, Last Guardian. Those worlds are so much more immersive than any open world (aka follow the icons collectathon) game I’ve ever played.
As someone who only purchased a PS3 a couple of years ago, and Dead Space was one of the first games I played, I really don’t think it needs a remaster. It held up extremely well in my opinion, it looked great, sounded great, and has lost none of its atmosphere. I started the second game but never finished it, it started going too action focused and they had Issac talking, coming out with one liners like he was in a 90s action film! I won’t even bother with the 3rd game. What a waste of a franchise.
I just bought Silent Bomber a couple of days ago! I’d never heard of it before, but saw a video of it on You Tube and thought it looked like a blast. The voice acting was just the icing on the cake.
I heartily recommend Over Blood for anyone who likes bad/good voice acting as well as characters who think they’re being serious but turn out to be really goofy. It’s hilarious!
Over the past couple of years I’ve finally managed to play Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian and Ico (in that order). And now I can finally see what all the fuss has been about. Great games. Unfortunately, the significance of the Last Guardian’s reveal at E3 2015 was lost on me at the time, which is a shame. Just like how I was 15+ years late experiencing Ico!
Just on the battery comments. As an avid retro gamer and someone with old gameboys, DSes, PSPs etc, I definitely see the advantage of modern handhelds or controllers using AA batteries. Getting brand new AA batteries will (hopefully) still be easy in 30 years time, when I will most definitely still be playing these consoles in my retirement. But getting a replacement battery for, say, a DualShock 4 controller when its battery is long dead most likely will not be. Still, I suppose I could plug it in via the USB cable to get that ‘retro’ feel I love so much 😀
I wonder if this will make my PS4 Pro sound like a jet engine like the demo of RE2 Remake does. I haven’t bought the full game because of that, it really takes the enjoyment out of it. Maybe I should invest in a mini fridge to house the console or something.

Also, does your TV have to specifically support 120Hz or in general terms can a typical consumer HD TV support it? I just have a bog standard LG 1080p TV. I won’t be upgrading anytime soon, but would love to see 120Hz in action if it’s available to me!
Re: Assassin's Creed Valhalla Has World Events Rather Than Side Quests
Re: Assassin's Creed Valhalla Has World Events Rather Than Side Quests
Call it what you want, I’m sure there will still be 5 lost goats/pigs/sheep to find and collect* for a farmer.
*find and collect = follow icons on a map.
I haven’t actually played an AC game, but as it’s ‘open world’ I’m guessing the above is still accurate.
Re: Dead Space Writer Teases His Next Game for PS5 Reveal Event
As someone who only purchased a PS3 a couple of years ago, and Dead Space was one of the first games I played, I really don’t think it needs a remaster. It held up extremely well in my opinion, it looked great, sounded great, and has lost none of its atmosphere. I started the second game but never finished it, it started going too action focused and they had Issac talking, coming out with one liners like he was in a 90s action film! I won’t even bother with the 3rd game. What a waste of a franchise.
Re: Can You Name These PS1 Games?
I just bought Silent Bomber a couple of days ago! I’d never heard of it before, but saw a video of it on You Tube and thought it looked like a blast. The voice acting was just the icing on the cake.
I heartily recommend Over Blood for anyone who likes bad/good voice acting as well as characters who think they’re being serious but turn out to be really goofy. It’s hilarious!
Re: Interview: How Sony's E3 2015 Press Conference Became the Greatest of All Time
Over the past couple of years I’ve finally managed to play Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian and Ico (in that order). And now I can finally see what all the fuss has been about. Great games. Unfortunately, the significance of the Last Guardian’s reveal at E3 2015 was lost on me at the time, which is a shame. Just like how I was 15+ years late experiencing Ico!
Re: PS5's DualSense Controller Will Have 'Strong' Battery Life
Just on the battery comments. Still, I suppose I could plug it in via the USB cable to get that ‘retro’ feel I love so much 😀
Re: Resident Evil 3 Looks Even More Impressive on PS4 Next to Its PSone Counterpart
I wonder if this will make my PS4 Pro sound like a jet engine like the demo of RE2 Remake does. I haven’t bought the full game because of that, it really takes the enjoyment out of it. Maybe I should invest in a mini fridge to house the console or something.
