In late 2018, developer FDG Entertainment brought us a spiritual successor to the Wonder Boy series with Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. It's a highly regarded 2D platformer with a wonderful cartoonish style. Now, it's set to brighten up next-gen consoles too. The studio has announced an enhanced version of the game is heading to PlayStation 5.
As stated in the above tweet, Monster Boy will run at native 4K and will support 120 frames per second on PS5, so it's going to look absolutely pin sharp. Better still, current owners of the PS4 game will be upgraded to the next-gen version for free, following the trend of several other titles.
There's no word on when the PS5 version will arrive, but it's obviously good news for fans regardless. Did you play Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom? Will you check it out again on PS5? Don't be monsters in the comments section below.

Had been meaning to pick this up but haven’t yet. Will now probably wait for the 120 FPS version on ps5!
Saw this a few days ago but yeah so good. I'll leave the trophy cleanup till I get my hands on this upgrade! I hope more good games get 120hz support cause that'll make stuff like this look smooth
This is a wonderful game but as my TVs are all 60Hz (I have one 75Hz monitor), I won't be able to take much advantage of all this 120FPS business for some time. I know there are input latency advantages even on a sub 120Hz monitor, but I am intrigued to give the full experience a go.
Do these upgrades apply to disc versions of games, or just digital versions?
Also, does your TV have to specifically support 120Hz or in general terms can a typical consumer HD TV support it? I just have a bog standard LG 1080p TV. I won’t be upgrading anytime soon, but would love to see 120Hz in action if it’s available to me!
The other monster boy titles is better I think, it's made by street of rage 4 developers. I hope that one also got native 4K and 120 fps patch too.
@GravyThief Yes it will apply to physical versions of the game too. To see 120fps, Yes you will need a corresponding display AND one that has HDMI 2.1 ports. Plenty of 120hz TV's but not many have HDMI 2.1 yet so whenever you do upgrade look for that as well.
@redd214 So, is the new console generation largely pointless unless you also have a brand new TV as well? What benefit WILL I see if I buy a PS5 but play it on my 5/6 year old Samsung? I hadn't even thought of any of this!
If the difference is negligible, it plays the new Xbox propostion into my hands even more to be honest! £25pm for a next gen console and gamepass package sounds good, even more so if the difference between that and the PS5 isn't going to be much on an old TV anyway.
@tomassi I would say no to that question. From my view there are reasons to upgrade even without a new TV. Many games will run at 30fps on the PS4/Pro so even a bump to 60 (which majority of TVs can do even without the newer HDMI standard) will be a welcome change imo. Add in the faster loading/QOL improvements etc and there are reasons outside of just graphics.
Also cheaper 120hz/2.1 TVs are already hitting the market now and I imagine more so in 2021 so it wouldn't be a must to drop $1500+ on a new screen. Vizio already has models now that have both those things and can get a 50" for like $400ish. Obviously there would be some tradeoffs in there but options will be aplenty.
The vast, VAST majority of households will not have a 120hz monitor, let alone a TV.
I’d say 1% of households would have it at most. The gaming community % would obviously be higher, but still nowhere close to the number who have 60hz screen.
It may looks good to say 120hz, but 60hz is what they should be aiming for as the industry standard.
When I first saw this tweet last night & then saw the latest Control Ultimate Edition upgrade farce,I had to laugh! Clearly FDG must've slipped on some of Monster Boy's special boots/armour to get past those deadly "Blocker" ninjas that 505 just couldn't overcome!
Lovely to see them provide a little something extra for next-gen & not price gouge for it.
No HDMI 2.1 here, so not for me. 4K @60 fps is what I aim for even on PC
But sounds great with the Free upgrade and all.
Sweet! This is a surprise! I will definitely look forward to it when this arrives, I haven't finished the game on ps4 yet
@Agramonte Lucky for me my TV supports 120htz so I will get the full benefits from this improvement 😎😎
@tomassi and who's fault is that your TV is 6 years old and doesn't support the features on ps5? You only have yourself to blame for that, you can buy a compatible TV for 500, it won't break the bank, I knew what the ps5 will have and future proof myself, it's about being smart about it, not lazynes, Devs are not going to hold back the specs just because you are too lazy to upgrade 🙄🙄🙄
@huyi errr, Okkkkkkkkaayyyy? Get out of school early today tiger??
@tomassi ok then.... 🤨🤨🤨🤨
Lol I feel like that's a bit of overkill for a game with such a simple art style. Great to see, I guess.
I already have it but its a great game. In my opinion it's the best Monsterboy.
I still love the cover art, shame I'm not a fan of the gameplay style.
However I know a close friend that is very excited about this coming to PS5.
@huyi FACTS! Just because others haven't upgraded already doesn't mean developers should hold back! 😃
@Kienda And why the hell would they hold back just because the majority don't have 120hz? There's seriously nothing to complain about here! It's giving both the people with 120hz and 60hz the benefit!
@tomassi Not pointless, even with you're outdated screen games will still look amazing!
@Ke1ni2chi3 because most games that will support 120hz will not be the games that need it (like competitive FPS games).
Most games currently play at 30fps, and when they got 60fps there is a graphical hit. To double it again means there will be a graphical hit. So why not just aim for 60 but make it rock solid 60 along with better graphics than can be achieved at 120fps?
In my opinion that tactic would be better for the whole gaming community rather than catering to a small few or, what I suspect they are doing, is simply aiming for 120 because the majority have no idea their TVs can’t support that and are wowed by big numbers.
@Kienda Think about what you just said long and hard. Use that beautiful brain of yours and take a look at reality for once. Yes, you'll see that you've answered your own questions multiple times already.
@Ke1ni2chi3 you really mad that I have a different opinion?
Why waste development time for the 1% when you can make the experience better for everyone by focusing on the core rather than getting those numbers?
Monster Boy clearly isn’t a game going to suffer graphically at 120, but other games will make compromises when most people will set the frame rate to 120 and it will do nothing because they haven’t got a TV that supports it. Or worse, they’ll have screen tearing.
They can go for it all they want. But it’s just to massage egos.
@Kienda I'm not mad, I'm simply disappointed that you can't understand something so simple. You're making excuses instead of simply admitting that there's nothing wrong with them striving for 120fp. Keep on making those excuses, continue being ungrateful towards the game future proving on one day, hopefully, you upgrading.
@Ke1ni2chi3 I play Overwatch at 120fps on a 120hz monitor.
I’m happy they give that option.
However, for console gaming the vast, vast majority (Like 99%) only have a 60hz TV. The majority don’t even have 4K which is way more widely available than a 120hz TV.
I don’t know what you aren’t understanding.
@Kienda I don't understand why you don't understand. The percentage of people buying a PS5 without a 120hz screen isn't that high. Either way, there's still seriously no reason as to why not go for 120hz in such a beautiful game. That precious development time will be enjoyed by me and many others! 😀
I'll be getting this the next time it's on sale!
