Re: Review: Secret of Mana (PS4)

GravyThief

I can forgive the remastered soundtrack, especially as the original is still in there.

I can just about forgive the new art style. Just. Once I've finished vomiting.

I can maybe forgive the voice acting. Or put the Japanese voices on. Or mute it.

I can forgive the loading screens between areas of dungeons. Just.

But what I absolutely cannot forgive at all, ever, no matter what their excuse, is that they removed the cannon travel animation sequence from the world map after being shot out of the cannon!! Unforgivable!!

Re: New US PlayStation Store Sale Reduces 2K's Titles

GravyThief

What's the Bioshock collection like compared to the PS3 counterparts? I bought the 3 games separately on PS3 simply because I could get them for under a tenner, but also looking at comparison videos on YouTube seemed to show they changed the design/style to a degree (e.g. water reflections on surfaces seem to have vanished) so I plumped for the originals. Wondering if I made the right call? Frame rate differences don't bother me too much, unless it's a full 60fps on PS4?

Re: Soapbox: I Miss the Mystery of Video Games

GravyThief

I miss the early to mid nineties. I remember when Gamestation first started (I was in Leeds, I think that was their first or second store before going national?), it was amazing. I used to browse the SNES games, and was in awe at how many there were to choose from. I do wonder how much of the nostalgia stems from being a child/teenager, rather than the stores themselves. I also remember how amazing I found the likes of Toys R Us and Jolly Giant toy stores with their shelves stacked high with Lego, long before Lego became some branded licensing showcase.

Re: Rumour: Spyro Remaster Roaring to PS4 Later This Year

GravyThief

I don't think I've played any of these before, so I'd love this to be true. I'm almost done with the Crash remake and I've loved it. I hope pro support here means a 60fps option (if not already in the base game). If Bluepoint can do it with SotC, it can be done with these games

Re: Hands On: Kingdom Come: Deliverance Marries the Open World of Skyrim With... The Sims?

GravyThief

I always like the idea of games like this, even Skyrim and the Witcher. But then I play them and I can never get into them. I like games to be simple. I don't want to spend hours in menus managing my food, sleep, 100 different attributes or 1000 different ingredients. I never understood when games try to be realistic, but then you end up carrying around 100's of pieces of clothing or 50 different weapons. It's like a half way house because at the end of the day, it's a game and it's meant to be fun.

I've started playing The Last of Us this weekend for the first time ever, and I like how that does it. Seems plausible the amount of items/weapons you can carry, and the crafting is nice and simple. That style is definitely my preference.

Re: PS4 Pro's New Supersampling Mode Is Putting in Work

GravyThief

@BAMozzy thanks for this, really good info. So I suppose what I find a shame is that using the 4K mode on games that have it (which for me would be supersampled down to 1080p) can impact performance. I'd want it to at least not make it worse.

A question I do have is: if a game doesn't have a 4K mode (or 'higher than 1080p' mode), does that mean Supersampling won't do anything? Or does the Pro output 4K anyway for those with 4K TVs, and thus supersampled down for us peasants with only HD TVs?

Re: PS4 Pro's New Supersampling Mode Is Putting in Work

GravyThief

It's good to know this looks like a decent option as I'll have a Pro soon and only have a HD TV. I'm more interested in smoother performance, so I'll benefit most from games like SotC or rise of tomb raider etc. I wish ALL pro updates enhanced performance for 1080p output, but resolution always seems to take precedence these days which is unfortunate.

It's annoying that Supersampling can impact the performance of some games, as it means I'll need to keep track of which games to turn it off with. Still, it's a nice benefit to have, so kudos to Sony for adding it in just as I'm getting a Pro

Re: Grand Theft Auto V Is Getting Closer to the 100 Million Units Milestone

GravyThief

I am one of the 5 people who play videogames but haven't played or bought it. I might buy it sometime this year, but probably second hand seen as there're nearly 90 million of them in the wild! I've never really been into GTA games. I think they're technically amazing, and the city worlds they've created are sublime, but I just get bored of them once I've beaten up enough civilians. Not really into the missions and story that I've tried, I feel like I'm controlling a chav and it's too 'hip-hop'. Now if they did a remake of Vice City with its 80's soundtrack and Scarface vibe, that would be a different story.

Re: Store Update: 6th February 2018 (Europe)

GravyThief

My copy of Colossus will be here tomorrow. Can't wait. Also got a PS4 Pro coming, thanks to a 'free' gift signing up to a new mobile contract. I only got my PS4 Slim a month ago! I couldn't miss out on that sweet 60fps for SotC though. Though if I sell my PS4 Slim I'm still paying the same a month for my mobile. I'm not that desperate for a Pro!

I've only got a 1080p TV, so this Supersampling update couldn't have been timed better

Re: Crash Bandicoot to Score a New Game in 2019

GravyThief

I'm currently playing the trilogy right now (just about finishing number 2). Whilst I think this is great news, we have to remember Naughty Dog developed the first 3 games and Activision/Vicarious just remastered/remade them. Whether they can design a Crash game from scratch that is as fun and well designed as the originals we'll have to wait and see. Plus I hope they make the controls feel better. I only recently played the original game on a PS1 (original hardware, not emulated) and the trilogy on PS4 definitely doesn't control as nicely. It's hard to say what it is. It just feels stiffer and less responsive, but I got used to it eventually.

Re: PlayStation Profits Soar as PS4 Reaches 76.5 Million Units

GravyThief

I just wish I went straight for the Pro rather than the Slim when I bought one over Xmas to add to these numbers. I don't have a 4K TV, but more games seem to be going for a 60fps option on the Pro like SotC. I really struggle with 30fps on games with fast moving cameras. The backgrounds go into double vision/ghosting as the frame rate can't keep up. Seems to bother me more than it ever used to. I look forward to when 60fps is the standard, not the exception!

Re: Ridiculous Rumour Suggests Microsoft Is Eyeing Up EA

GravyThief

I know this is likely false, but in the alternate reality where this is true, I can't really think of an EA game I'd miss (as I don't ever plan to own an Xbox or gaming PC). Dead Space maybe, but that series seems to be dead now and it got worse with each installment anyway, by removing what made it great in the first place into a generic story driven game. Maybe the SIMs too, for my wife anyway, not me. What else is there? Is Mirror's Edge any good? I don't like sports games, and have no interest in games like Battlefront and the like.

Re: Review: Shadow of the Colossus (PS4)

GravyThief

I'll playing this game for the first time on PS4, I can't wait. I just wish I had the PS4 Pro as seeing this at 60fps on the Digital Foundry video looks absolutely glorious, and that's on YouTube on an iPad.

Re: Shadow of the Colossus Vinyl Soundtrack Revealed

GravyThief

Screw it. I've just pre-ordered the PS4 version of this game on Amazon. I've recently bought the PS2 and PS3 versions, but I think this game deserves to be first played with the best version which this is looking to be.

Does anyone know if this soundtrack will be available on CD or on iTunes or similar? From what I heard in that video the music sounds amazing and I'd love to have it alongside the rest of the video game music on my phone.

Re: God of War Won't Have a Season Pass

GravyThief

I like proper expansions as DLC, such as new stories, new areas or levels. More gameplay basically. Makes me think of the expansions you used to get for board games like Heroquest. You get something meaty for your money.

What I don't like is DLC tat: costumes, avatars, weapons, micro transactions. Tat.

Re: Resident Evil 2 Remake News May Be Close as Capcom Alters Social Media Accounts

GravyThief

I always wondered why RE2 and RE3 were never remade in the same vein as REmake on the Gamecube. I've never played either of them so would appreciate remakes of them on PS4.

Also, if it's true, wouldn't that just leave RE3 as the only mainline RE game you can't play on the PS4? Not sure if Code Veronica is classed as a mainline entry or not. It would be amazing if you could get every mainline RE entry as a PS4 disc release.

Re: Could a New Prince of Persia be in Development for PS4?

GravyThief

I would like a new PoP game, but please keep it linear and all about the platforming and puzzles. If it becomes yet another open world game that demands 100 hours to work through a chore list disguised as 'Main quest' and 'side quests' I won't bother. Oh, and it might be better if the prince character was more like, you know, a Persian Prince rather than an American douche bag surfer dude. Just saying.

Re: Feature: 5 PS4 Firmware Update Features We Need in 2018

GravyThief

@joey302 I hate it when that happens! It happens with the BBC News app on iPhone, and was doing it on eBay when I was browsing yesterday. It's almost as if these designers don't actually use their own apps and websites.

Talking of the PS Store, and the fact I'm new to it, is there a way on the PS3 Store to view the PS1 and PS2 classic games? I can't find a category or a way to filter them out, but if I search for a specific title I know they sell I can find it. It's almost as if they don't want my money!

Re: Feature: 5 PS4 Firmware Update Features We Need in 2018

GravyThief

@NintendoFan4Lyf oh yes I knew that before I purchased the consoles. What I didn't realise was that the same happens with most PS3 games (I thought it was PS4 only), and that 1 game like DOOM could take up over 70gb on its own. It does put into question the useful life of optical media, though personally I still dread the day gaming goes 100% digital.

Re: Feature: 5 PS4 Firmware Update Features We Need in 2018

GravyThief

@EVIL-C it seems it's a necessary evil of modern gaming and optical media that isn't fast enough to load data on the fly, but man do I miss the old days of simply popping in a game and playing it.

I would love the firmware to have a 'Retro mode' or something, where it just strips back all the rubbish and lets you simply play games.

Re: Feature: 5 PS4 Firmware Update Features We Need in 2018

GravyThief

As someone who has just come from Nintendo consoles to Sony's PS3 and PS4, and reading for years about how far behind the times Nintendo are with their consoles' UIs, I must say I am extremely disappointed with what I find on the PS3 and PS4. There's just so much chaff on there, and the layout is horrendous. I don't need to see an icon for Singstar, or icons for PS NOW or whatever. I cannot see update and game data separately. I also cannot believe how much my storage space has disappeared despite only owning physical based games! And why the heck did DOOM need a 30GB update so it now takes up 70gb+ of my storage! The PS Store is terrible as well, I struggle to find DLC for games, and don't seem to have access to my wish list on the store on the console. I have no interest in all the stuff about friends or trophies either.

I understand what people say about the lack of features on Nintendo consoles, but when it comes to simply playing games, I definitely prefer the stripped back approach. Sometimes I have to wait 30 mins before I can play a game, waiting for it to install and update. It's like owning a PC, but with better games.

Re: Feature: 5 Ways PS4 Can Dominate in 2018

GravyThief

With the recent 20% discount eBay promotion, and selling the copy of FIFA 18 that came with it, I've managed to bag myself a shiny new PS4 Slim for £150 which I'm very pleased with. That would be a great rrp to shift even more consoles as I would have bought one much sooner at that price.

My only problem is I've also just bought a PS3 with like the top 50 games for it, so I now have a 10 year Playstation backlog to work my way through. Nice problem to have though

Re: Game of the Year 2017: #4 - What Remains of Edith Finch

GravyThief

Is there a way to view all the games from this list in one place, so I can easily read all the articles on them? Sorry if it's staring me in the face! I read the site on Mobile, so maybe that's why I can't see it obviously.

EDIT: I've worked it out! I've just clicked on the 'Game of the Year' tag. It shows me the similar articles from last year too which is useful, as I get my brand new PS4 over the next few days so need to see what games to get.

Re: UK Sales Charts: Crash Bandicoot Climbs the List for Christmas

GravyThief

@dark_knightmare2 because I'd rather it came with a game (or games) that I want to play, rather than the hassle of selling them on. There have been other deals with games I want and an extra controller, so I'm just waiting for them to appear again. Selling on eBay is a pain in the backside, and that's before eBay and PayPal take their massive cut.

Re: UK Sales Charts: Crash Bandicoot Climbs the List for Christmas

GravyThief

The top 3 games have all been bundled with PS4 consoles, and continue to be, so I bet that contributes to these positions. I've been trying to buy a PS4 for a couple of weeks, but I won't until I can get one that doesn't come with any of those 3 games or a bloody playlink game as I don't want them!

Re: PS4 Gobbled Up Half of All Physical Game Sales in UK This Year

GravyThief

Well I'll be a new PS4 Slim owner soon, contributing to these stats in 2018. I've already purchased a few games ready for it, but there's still so much to get and coming out next year.

I've also just purchased a PS3 Slim and about 20 of its best games for £50 or so on eBay. My backlog has increased by about 10,000% in a matter of a week! I'm sorted until the mid 2020's anyway.

PlayStation definitely has the best lineup of exclusives. Whilst Nintendo's best will always be my favourite (Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Fire Emblem), Sony has nailed the quantity/quality ratio down to a fine art. I could literally only play exclusives on the PS4 and I'd still always have a back log.

Re: Feature: The Making of MediEvil

GravyThief

@Flaming_Kaiser it's because you need to imagine you're controlling a stick at the back of the head of the character. Pushing it up means the head faces downwards, pushing it down means the head faces upwards. Same for left and right. This was fine back in the day when ALL games had controls that were inverted. The problem started when some games had them uninverted without an option to change (well done those people), so you had differences between games. Since then most games have had uninverted controls, which meant that's what I now see as normal. If all games were consistent and followed one standard, or all games had an option for both, this would never be an issue. But of course not all games designers are intelligent, so hence we are where we are.

Re: Feature: The Making of MediEvil

GravyThief

Great read. I've recently fired up my PS1 and gave this game a quick play after hearing it's getting a remaster.

One thing I hope that's updated are the inverted camera controls. Like many games from the 90's and early 00's they're inverted without the option to 'un-invert' (that I could find). I could just about get used to it on the vertical axis, but not the horizontal one.

It goes to show how controls have evolved. This never used to be an issue for me. In fact I preferred them inverted (certainly on the vertical axis with games like Starfox), but now games border on unplayable when I can't uninvert them. I've got soft in my old age!

Re: Review: Okami HD (PS4)

GravyThief

@get2sammyb indeed. The Last of Us, all the Uncharted games, ICO, Last Guardian, even Skyrim, Witcher 3, Tomb Raider, DOOM, Bioshock and all the other great multi plats are new to me, so I'm going to be starting with a decade old back log right from the get go! Looking forward to it though 😀

Re: Review: Okami HD (PS4)

GravyThief

As someone who has never played Okami and is going to be getting a PS4 soon, I am glad this has reviewed well and I'll get to experience it for the first time in its best form. Same goes for Shadow of the Colossus too, can't wait!

EDIT: Actually I've just ordered it from Amazon as it was only £13 with Prime Discount. I am definitely preferring Playstaion game pricing over Nintendo game pricing!

Re: Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection Brings 12 Classic Games to PS4 in 2018

GravyThief

So how does this rewind tech work to reduce input lag then? Tried a quick google search but nothing's come up. I'm a bit dubious that they can retrospectively remove input lag from our wireless joypads and HDTV set ups, but it would be great if it's possible. Is it some form of displaying the gameplay a few frames late, to give the illusion it's more responsive than it actually is?

Re: Guide: PS4 Pro vs PS4 - Which One Should You Buy?

GravyThief

@ToddlerNaruto that's the way I'm leaning. I too won't have a 4K TV for many years, and looking at some vids on YouTube the Pro really is quite a beast, too big if I'm not going to benefit from most of it. £200 for a PS4 + games is amazing value and I can't really pass that up, and it really shows up how expensive the Switch is. I don't know how that's still selling like it is. I'll take power and games over portability, that's for sure.
