It is okay for games and franchises to end on their own terms. You don't need sequels for the heck of it, if the development team feels they've done everything they possibly could with these characters.
Nathan Drakes story ended perfectly. This here is the problem with the games industry. Halo became a joke, MGS lost the plot even though gameplay got more refined, Gears lost its charm. Sly was given to a new developer and now he's stuck in a cliffhanger.
In all seriousness though, Housemarque seem to be scaling up quite a bit. Didn't they get a Platinum Combat guy last year or something. By then SAROS was already far in development, so it seems like they already have a pretty clear plan for the next project.
Hope they figure it out but AA games are having a far tougher time recovering costs despite a few titles becoming popular in recent times creating a false narrative.
@Bsb56 change in combat allegedly which may mean a new camera, change in lead character that too one who is almost a complete unknown. probably a prequel which is also a narrative very risk.
@AverageGamer Oh that's interesting to know. Hopefully Nintendo figure out an affordable way to put heavy games on cartridges. Feels like it'll only become a bigger problem as more third parties release on the platform.
@Ainu20 Exactly I have my issues but Santa Monica have shown they're unafraid of taking the big risks and have earned the right to at least show gameplay and the story before people write off the game.
Didn't care for the base game witcher 3. A dull open world and a story that lost steam after the first act but the Expansions were excellent. Especially Hearts of Stone with its smarter pacing and top notch character writing. So I'm interested in this if it is real.
That's interesting. I think releasing like this with the price cuts are a smart way to get that second wind. If it does well on PS it helps boost interest on other platforms as well.
I know they consensus is quite mixed to negative now but who knows maybe it gets a better reception at the new price.
@Ainu20 I've said it for multiple times but this comment section is one of the weirdest I've seen: 1. they want new IP but also want old failed IP to come back 2. They want sequels and existing franchises to take more risks but also, hate it when franchises take risks. 3. Want Playstation to diversify from third person cinematic action adventure games but complain about everything that isn't a third person cinematic action adventure game.
@Haruki_NLI That's interesting but Dring did say he included Generation pack in his calculations (https://x.com/Chris_Dring/status/2028216658259800432)
Either way I just started playing Requiem today. It's my first RE game ever and first CAPCOM game since DMC5. It's very scary.
@Ludacritz If you can revamp your franchise why not play with that universe with new types of gameplay? It's like saying Capcom should stop making RESIDENT EVIL or Nintendo should stop making 3D Mario games.
God of War has shown it's ability to re-invent itself, I don't see why they cannot do it again.
@mrbone xbox is about right for a extremely digital playerbase and a failing console. The Switch 2 numbers are quite low for a new AAA third party. Cyberpunk (5 years old during switch 2 release) numbers but for a new game are poor imo.
It's not for me but in an era of samey looking blah shooters it is nice to see something that looks INTERESTING and CLEAN and isn't just a bunch of brown and grey. It is also interesting to see BUNGIE go so hardcore and have so much friction in the gameplay where so many games now seem to actively want to court casuals.
@Jackthelad93 Two things about such comparisons are: 1. Youtubes compression messes up how good a thing actually looks on video. 2. Images don't really do justice to seeing the game in motion on a real screen.
It's why the PS5 PRO has been so difficult to market where the PS4 PRO was easier.
Good. Exclusivity matters. Valve isn't sharing Deadlock or Half Life Alyx. It also feels like this more than any other was a Jim Ryan decision while Nishino being a HW and Platform guy would prioritise PlayStation consoles.
Edit: Sorry this wasn't a Ryan effort but a Layden one.
I said this before but Yotei and God of War Ragnarok had their release dates revealed in a random Youtube Video and a Blog Post respectively.
This is Sony marking that date as theirs and telling others to find another one. Q3 2026 will be stuffed with releases as everyone avoids GTA 6. Not to mention if Wolverine is asgood as Spidey 1 it will be a massive 1-2 punch for PS5 hardware with GTA6 releasing shortly after.
@MB3108 as per Kotaku Grace's sections are amazing but kinda disappear as the game becomes the Leon Kennedy show and relegates her to the sidelines in a way. So that's what they mean by that criticism.
@Juanalf God of War Ragnarok's release date was announced in a Blog post Ghost of Yotei got a random release date video on youtube
It isn't as weird as you make it seem. They seem to be more interested in locking dates down before others reveal their own. Especially this year where GTA means no other games will come out after October.
@Leinad7 dude a nintendo fan talking about reused assets when Mario Tennis Fever just came out is laughable. Go back to Nintendo Life lol. Nintendo hasn't had a successful new IP since Splatoon
The worrying thing is when Bungie starts saying all the right things and actually starts dropping 40 min gameplay videos that look excellent. Bungie cooking is usually the start of Complacent Bungie. Hoping a trigger happy Sony keeps them on their toes.
The Switch 2's over-performing in Japan but underperforming in the Western market. Not sure Nintendo will be happy about that given the higher profit margins on the western devices and the strong USD will mean higher profits on FX.
Regarding PlayStation it's an impressive feat but sadly what would've been a really strong week has been a ***** sandwich. Yotei is a great game and I think Sucker Punch continues to be the blueprint with Insomniac for smart, focused development. I think Housemarque fits in this too if Saros matches Returnals quality.
Xbox did better than I expected with Hardware given the insane cost of the device but I don't know how to feel about the future of the platform.
It is something I find fascinating. The amount of ire I see online does not match the Insomniac leaks about the actual sales of Bluepoints remakes. Just like Japan Studios.
If I had to cut a team Bluepoint seemed like the obvious target. I can give the remakes to Virtuous at a fraction of the cost and it will get an 85-88 on Metacritic and call it a day.
As a person who bought TNDC, SoTC, GR Remastered and played DeS on PS+ it sucks but the business is moving towards outsourced work.
Media Molecule caters to an area that PlayStation wants to grow in so they're safe for now (childrens games), Bend is in a precarious spot but the location is cheaper in comparison but they need to work fast, Fairgames is a sunk cost fallacy at this point and the project I'm most surprised hasn't been shuttered yet.
Regarding Hulst, I wouldn't be surprised if he retired at the start of the PS6 era. Get the new leader boost. I think they're looking at who they can replace him with but looking at current heads of Sony Studios they're all too artistic. The Sucker Punch and Insomniac bosses leaving really reduces the viable candidates.
Here's hoping the story is more Control and less AW2. AW2 was rubbish papered over by vibes and cutscene direction. A poor man's version of Twin Peaks: The Return. Also hoping there is a better variety of HISS since the shadows and Hiss in the previous games were really limited.
People are negative now but Oblivion was one of the best selling games last year. I think they need to evolve their world and quest design and drop the procedural generation. People want authorial intent in an RPG. Give the world and let people RolePlay within the confines of your world
I wonder if he knew he was being filmed by a youtuber while saying that. A lot of VAs reveal stuff to fans at cons with the assumption that they're not being recorded.
Either way interesting times for Santa Monica fans. I know some wanted a new IP but God of War has so much potential and I trust Barlog as a creative.
It's interesting given Nintendo hasn't really bothered pushing Indies since the Switch 2 reveal. Hades 2 is maybe the only one that got a pretty big marketing push
@graymamba Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Santa Monica, Sucker Punch have their own proprietary engines. Bend had allegedly shifted to Decima for their cancelled game I think San Diego has their own engine too Polyphony, Asobi, Bungie are also proprietary.
I think Housemarque are the only ones who use Unreal.
I think Square are generally quite screwed overall. They don't seem to have anything for this year except that Elliot game. All their big games are in some form of dev hell.
I think the Remake trilogy is only catering to the same 4-6 million gamers and not getting younger players
Anyway wish them well but the writings on the wall when 3.5 million units sold in a week is underwhelming on a 35-40 million unit install base
I also think a lot of the friendship with Nintendo now is because Square wants to get Japan interested again and for Nintendo, to show that they're a good place for third parties. I also think it's interesting that the best SOP and show in a while came when Square had nothing to show.
I won't console war but when even the licenced Bandai Sony games haven't gone to Xbox why the hell would Spider-Man go.
Xbox has had no choice but to go this route and one must never forget they bought all these studios for exclusives. It's just that they miscalculated and it put them in a worse position that forced the head of Microsoft and the CFO to 'assume direct control'
While I don't think it was false marketing I do think the game should have been clear about it in the description of the PlayStation store. I would give refunds to anyone who played up to an hour for that reason.
Jaffe was a great developer but it's also clear he hasn't grown or matured beyond his edge lord sense of cool. I haven't played this to comment but he's been pissed since 2018 overshadowed the originals.

@AverageGamer Is the Key card boycott that big? I'm genuinely curious because quite often online noise doesn't really translate to real world action.
