It isn't a new observation to declare we're very much in the age of IP, revisiting the same popular franchises over and over again.
There's a good reason it's happening — games (or any media) following this tactic sell, and fresh, new ideas are risky business when budgets are now many hundreds of millions of dollars. PlayStation is at the epicentre of this push.
A studio like Naughty Dog is afforded the luxury of making something different (the incoming Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet) because of its past successes, but several teams within PS Studios are sticking to what they know works.

Guerrilla Games struck gold with Horizon Zero Dawn, and the series has sold in excess of 40 million units across its various games. The studio is firmly entrenched in Aloy's robo-dino world; its next game is multiplayer spin-off Horizon Hunters Gathering, and it'll almost certainly follow that up with Horizon 3.
As mentioned, Naughty Dog is shifting over to a new IP for its next title, but we can't ignore The Last of Us, which has also surpassed 40 million units. Two main games, a DLC chapter, two remasters, a remake, and many years spent on a cancelled live service multiplayer offshoot — Sony went all-in.
Santa Monica Studio has been in the God of War mines for even longer, and while it has experimented with other projects in the past, it's very unlikely to move on from its mythological epic. The entire franchise has sold over 76 million units to date.

The Norse games revived the series and made it significantly more popular than it already was. As a result, we've recently had a prequel spin-off with God of War: Sons of Sparta, the announcement of God of War Trilogy Remake, and strong rumours about a new title in the Norse mythos featuring Faye as the player character.
MLB The Show is consistent enough that San Diego Studio has made nothing else for years, and Polyphony Digital, which makes Sony's best-selling series Gran Turismo, is also unlikely to change gears at this stage.
I feel like Marvel's Spider-Man is almost not worth mentioning, as it's so obvious an example, but yes, expect Insomniac Games to be making Marvel superhero adventures for a long time.

Many of the franchises I've mentioned are being converted into big, expensive films or TV shows, if they haven't already, all in aid of making them as big as humanly possible.
It's very clear to me that, save a few precious exceptions, PlayStation is heavily leaning into its most popular series and will continue to do so.
My question is, if this is the reality we find ourselves in, how come Uncharted isn't part of the equation?
It did get the movie treatment — in fact, it was the first project handled by PlayStation Productions, and a sequel is in the works. But it seems to me that the likes of God of War and Horizon are doubling down with new games, while Uncharted is left on the back burner.

Preceding The Last of Us, the globe-trotting escapades of Nathan Drake quickly became a jewel in PlayStation's crown. It too has sold exceedingly well at over 41 million units across four mainline titles, a handful of side stories, and remaster collections.
It felt like Uncharted would become a staple of Sony's first-party lineup, and it did, for a while. Across PS3 and PS4, Drake was the poster child for PS Studios, but aside from a remaster of the most recent games, the adventures haven't continued on PS5.
That's despite glowing reviews, big sales, and a burgeoning movie series. Yes, the first film wasn't the greatest, but it made money, and that's ultimately Sony's aim.
It just seems to me that Uncharted still has a lot left to give in the games department. Spoilers for the 10-year-old Uncharted 4: A Thief's End follow.

Just a couple of ideas for Sony and PS Studios here: Nate and Elena's daughter, Cassie, could easily become the new face of the series, perhaps with her old man begrudgingly in tow.
What about a game following Victor "Goddamn" Sullivan in his earlier years as a treasure hunter? At Push Square Towers, we've long said an Uncharted game set in, say, the 1970s could be fantastic.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy puts the spotlight on Chloe Fraser, and she could definitely front another adventure. In fact, she proved that Uncharted doesn't need Nathan Drake to succeed.
The series introduced such a rich world with so many fun characters, and it feels ripe for the picking, but Sony has seemingly left it out of its current strategy to grow its biggest series. It just seems like a missed opportunity to me.
There's a possibility that Naughty Dog is maybe reluctant to let go of the series it created, and let other teams take on new projects. That being said, it's Sony's IP, so I'm not sure how much weight that sentiment would carry.
But anyway, what do I know? Maybe Uncharted isn't done, after all, and it'll bounce back in spectacular fashion, and then this article will feel silly. I'd certainly like that to come true.

How about letting Night Dive have a crack at Golden Abyss ?
The only Uncharted game not playable on PS5 is the PS Vita spin-off, Uncharted: Golden Abyss. While Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (1–3) and Legacy of Thieves Collection (4 & Lost Legacy) are playable via backwards compatibility or native ports, Golden Abyss remains locked to the Vita handheld
I feel like enough is enough. We basically saw the entire life of Drake. There are no plot twists for us anymore.
I also doubt Sully can carry the game. He's a great character but he only works as a Nate's mentor/sidekick
I don’t know why Sony didn’t do more with this in the end.. Uncharted 4 sold gargantuan numbers, but as soon as Neil Druckmann got a hold of it, he goes by the philosophy of every game he touches has to feel like it’s the last one possible and it really put a hold on this franchise. Allowing a studio to do what it wants is one thing, but basically killing off a franchise when it’s still relevant is another. God of War and Uncharted are the 2 franchises which I would buy forever, I love them so much, but the magic got removed from Uncharted when Amy Hennig left (got forced out?) of Naughty Dog.
Uncharted could have made a good return if Sony had a studio perfectly fit to do a Remake of the first 3 games, as well as a new title in the series... but(t) management took another "inspired" decision.
It wouldn't surprise me if there was a team that has been working on a Cassie Drake led game for a while. It also wouldn't surprise me if that team was constantly being pulled from that project to run support on whatever live service game was about to fail.
It's in the same boat as Ratchet now, joining the likes of Sly, Twisted Metal and others, because their studio has found the golden goose and that's now all they can afford. The budgets are so high the profits from said game have to go into the next guaranteed hit, rather than make smaller games for less.
I thought we wanted new IP and no more sequels, reboots, remakes, or remasters?
I'm fine either way. I would love to see more Uncharted, but I'm also extremely satisfied with the way the story ended for Nathan Drake and the rest of the cast.
Not many franchises I feel get to stay "complete" like Uncharted can.
Tbh even though 3, 4 and Lost Legacy were fine; after 2's superb outing, there wasnt really anything that could live up to it imo 🙂
You can't even imagine how much I missed Uncharted. My most beloved franchise. I really wanted a sequel to Lost Legacy etc. But I just can't understand why they don't do anything with the IP. Also it is so sad to remember that Sony refused to do remake of 1st one since it would be "expensive" and they chose to remakestered the Part 1 instead since they didn't change anything about it.
I Find it Funny that people say that there is to many Horizon games but they want Naughty Dog to do the same with Uncharted.
Live service Nathan drake spin off is in the works. Will be cancelled in 2030!
There were those rumors a few years back of a new team working on an Uncharted spin-off. Since it’s been so long, that either got cancelled or didn’t exist to begin with, but if it did exist and got cancelled, I wonder what Sony’s thought process was.
Still don't understand why Bluepoint wasn't tasked with remaking Uncharted 1.
@Areus We've had/will have had 5 Horizon games in 10 years in 2027. Meanwhile, we haven't had an Uncharted game since the year the first Horizon game came out. Pretty big difference in saturation.
@ButterySmooth30FPS I still have that opinion. I loved playing through all of the Uncharted games, but sometimes it's fine to let a series end.
@ButterySmooth30FPS Who the f*** is "we," here?
@Nepp67 it had a fitting end to the series
I would love a new game focusing on Sam and Sully’s adventures after Uncharted 4’s ending, even tho I think they are done with Uncharted.
Where's anything from Naughty Dog? They have brought nothing to the table this gen.
Honestly, kinda feel like Uncharted has run its course. Maybe it's just because I've never been a big fan of the series, but I'd imagine it'd feel about as tired and played out as Gears or Halo had they kept up with releases. And while you could ideally do a Norse of War style reboot, I really don't know what Uncharted's universe would contribute above just making a new IP.
Why because it got the perfect send-off why ruin it with a new game.
With that said, I'd reckon a Golden Abyss remake would be a bit of fun.
@Splat exactly not a new game this gen yet
Dead and buried apparently
@wildcat_kickz And we had 8 uncharted games if you count the spin off games from 2007-2017 not that different not to mention Horizons story isn't finished while uncharted at least ended Nathan Drakes story.
Sometimes you just need to know when to let go and Naughty Dog did that.
If anything they made more Uncharted games than expected.
Besides you just can’t please everyone, for everyone who wants more Uncharted there will be someone else who would rather something new.
Ugh…. Regurgitating franchises over and over and over and over…..
@saffeqwe Yup.
I'm good. You can like something and be fine with it being over.
@Areus Realistically, we've had 6 Uncharted games. Tiny mobile games are not part of anyone's zeitgeist, but I take your point.
The point I'm trying to make is 10 years is a long time, so people are obviously hungry for a new one. The same can't be said for Horizon and God of War, where we've been saturated with releases, consistently. You can't miss something if it never goes away.
Franchise fatigue is real, but it doesn't really have anything to do with how many entries a franchise has. It's how frequently we have those releases.
Well, even though I want 100 such games from them, I know that there is 90% chance that all will go to hell. Right now this stands as masterpiece series. Maybe best leave it like that and have it as benchmark for others to aim. Not ruin it's reputation.
@RoomWithaMoose The collective consciousness of PushSquare
@ButterySmooth30FPS The collective consciousness of Push Square also believes there are only two game scores: 1 and 10 😂
It ended. The way all franchises intended to before corporate greed refused them to die gracefully.
If you really wanted Uncharted back then Bluepoint could be making a remake of the OG trilogy, oh but wait…
@ButterySmooth30FPS Having just beaten System Shock 2, I am perturbed and disgusted by the implication.
The story is over.
Uncharted without Nathan Drake isn't Uncharted.
I’d crawl over broken glass to reach a face painting tent… ooh err.. I mean a new uncharted!! Can just imagine Nate’s daughter the protagonist and Nate playing the sully role ❤️. One of the best franchises in gaming history!! Much preferred it to TLOU
We definitely don't need another Uncharted game with the previous characters. I would be delighted if a new globe trotting, swashbuckling character was introduced but it probably needs to be set in the past - what with the world in it's current state (technology/conflict etc).
Need more uncharted please ND! Drakes story ended perfectly. So I think two options would be good for a next step.
1) continue on with drakes daughter and drake tags along like sully.
2) reboot with new adventures from a new beginning
I’d take either but maybe more the first option
@RoomWithaMoose That’s fine because it isn’t a Sony game. PS Studios specifically aren’t allowed to remake/remaster/reboot games (except for Bluepoint which should’ve remade everything SIE has ever published) or make sequels.
@Gr8VngnzN4esAngr This is Lost Legacy erasure.
Personally, I'd love a new game with Cassie Drake in the lead.
I adore Uncharted and think 4 is by far the best one.
I was glad it ended at the time but it's been a decade since then and I'm more than ready for another. Bring Drake out of retirement!
@Deadhunter People seem to forget that Lost Legacy exists. A shame since it's a brilliant game in its own right.
I Still think they have an uncharted game in development at a secret first party studio.
@IOI Consumer tastes are erratic as the "we want new IP" vs "please remake this game" comments here demonstrate. Businesses try to gauge demand and often get it wrong (greed is irrelevant).
It was time to move on. The thing about sequels in story driven games is you kind of have to play the previous games, and after awhile it gets to be a lot. I never need to play another Kingdom Hearts game, Final Fantasy is very different, and I don't need another Uncharted.
I'm thankful Uncharted exists, 2 was an all time great, but imagine if all we ever got were Spyro and Crash games b/c the devs never moved on to new IP? It's good for devs to move on.
Honestly I say this as a massive fan of the series with a lot of nostalgia from playing the ps4 remasters when I got mine back in 2015 - it’s fine just to let things end and move on. I think the series got everything out of the formula it could and ended before things got boring 🤷
Uncharted was my first proper exposure to Sony's first-party output (always been a Nintendo guy first and foremost so it took me a while until I had the means to properly play Playstation games XD) and to say its left an impression on me would be one hell of an understatement. I have yet to play UC4/Lost Legacy as of now but UC2 is one of my favourite games ever made and while UC1/3 are quite flawed in comparison, both still have so many memorable moments that endeared me greatly to the video game equivalent of Indiana Jones.
At the same time though....do we really need more of it? I do recognise that there's potential in bringing back Uncharted as a Split Fiction-style co-op platformer but given that story and characters were such a crucial element of the series and the story in question has been given a definitive ending point with UC4, I can't help but feel like bringing it back now would basically be reviving it for the sake of reviving it and not much else.
then again I will absolutely be there day-one should they put out a new one anyways so who am I to judge XD
I totally get why sequels are made as they sell well but thanks to the high risk these days it’s sad to think these studios are becoming just same franchise studios.
To me this makes the closure of bluepoint even worse when they could’ve been remaking some more left field, lower seller remakes that fans are clamouring for to mix things up like sly cooper, Jak, wipeout, infamous or whatever.
@ButterySmooth30FPS https://shodan.fandom.com/wiki/The_Many
Sony is sadly clueless with this Herman turd calling the shots. The fact Sony would rather shut down BluePoint and not come to some agreement with From to make it happen is crazy. If from decides to Remaster it I hope it tanks them tbh.
Wasn’t there rumors for a while that there was an uncharted game being worked on or is that not true
@Nyne11Tyme clearly fromsoftware wasnt happy with demon souls remake and the fact they had nothing to do with it , I doubt they would ever agree to bloodborne remake sadly. People need to move on already now that the truth is out.
Uncharted had a humour which feels a bit outdated, too much like Myles McKenzie, which didn’t go down well. Nathan was coined by Amy Hennig, and Uncharted is Nathan Drake. The series will probably never lose that humour.
The Last of Us allows for a wide, intense, mature spectrum of emotions. That universe can still tell a lot of interesting stories!
Yeah a new uncharted game need to happen. It's easy money for son.word up son
Only ND can make Uncharted so....
Naughty Dog too busy making that garbage game because of Neil massive ego.
@HerlockSholmes 4 is amazing the ps5 version is glorious to behold
Valid. Uncharted is one of the few series Sony has that feels like it could use more. All you need is an ancient artefact and a plucky hero. Blow some stuff up. Golden.
Yep such opportunities with Drake and his Daughter.
Could release a new series of 3 games, starting with drake and Cassie together.
So miss this series after UC4.
To think ND did UC4 and the spin off on the PS4 by now, in the PS5 life cycle.
But of a joke this generation.
The suggestion at the end of the article that Naughty Dog's reluctance to let another team work on the franchise might be a problem is baffling to me. No other studio in the world should have the right to work on Uncharted without Naughty Dog's blessing, and it only makes sense for Sony to respect the wishes of one its jewels in the crown.
If Naughty Dog feel Uncharted has run its course, at least for the foreseeable future, than we should all accept that. In the space of 10 years, there were 4 mainline entries, one very substantial spin-off and a couple of handheld games. That is plenty, it was time to let it rest. Let it return at some point in the future when it might feel fresh again. And if it never returns, it had a great run with a beautiful epilogue.
I definitely believe they are working on another Uncharted game. Whether it's Cassie as the lead(which would be a refreshing and cool take) or Chole(who is a badass) I think Sony has a Studio working on it and we will probably see it revealed in the next year or so.
Have it announced before we see info about the New movie. Just makes way too much sense. Nathan's story is over but his daughter can start her own thing or Chloe can have another cool adventure.
@RoomWithaMoose Ahh! Haven’t played it yet, but it (and the first one) is definitely on my list.
Uncharted had its day in the sun let's move on to new IP please, I can only stomach so much regurgitation, its prevalent in movies, tv and videogames today, are the current generation of creatives devoid of new ideas?
I don't necessarily need this specific IP or brand or characters to return, but I desperately want a similar game. A fun and lightheaded yet thrilling romp across the world, with lots of historical fiction and beautiful showpieces.
I don't really want to play The Last of Us because although it may not strictly be horror, that sorta stuff just stresses me out! It took a lot out of me to even get through that one part of Uncharted 1. I don't want to be scared, it's not fun for me.
@ECharles Remakes or remasters are actually a great way to bring a franchise back without a new entry as the story has concluded, many people assume all gamers were born at the exact same time and that’s just not true, there’s a huge collection of games that younger gamers simply don’t know of and remakes are a great way to revive a franchise (if done correctly) while at the same time leave the studio to create new IPs and franchises.
Please no. Let the franchise end on a high note and be remembered fondly. Also no lead will they get to replace Drake will measure up to him.
@ButterySmooth30FPS well for me the sequels, reboots and remasters depend on the series I guess. Like God hand, Castlevania, Bomberman, bloody roar, etc. But yea I'd still love more new IP please
I wouldn't mind if the series ended at 4. I think it had a great ending and just needs to be done imo. Unless we're gonna get some wild stuff like cyberpunk uncharted or pirate uncharted then just keep it. I don't want a reboot or new entry that's just gonna be the same gameplay only with better graphics
Id be fine with leaving Nathan Drake in retirement and focusing on the broader world or new characters.
REALLY wish Sony would have scooped up the Tomb Raider IP and went that direction with treasure hunting games.
I’m done with the series, it never felt like a game that evolved other than the tech side creating bigger set pieces each release. At its core, it was stagnant and you felt like you were playing the same game each time only with better graphics/animations.
Someone was working on a Cassie Drake led game at some point - there was that clip of her in a cave in a PlayStation 5 ad a few years back. (Well, never confirmed to be her, but go watch it and tell me that it isn’t her and it isn’t Uncharted.)
Man, I would love it if Sony would do another Uncharted. Gotta be honest, Uncharted on PS3 was THE franchise. I overlooked the series for a while too, thinking it was a Tomb Raider clone. Foolish me. When Uncharted 3 came out, I binged the first three games, figuring why not? Tomb Raider was good again, maybe this was worth it too. It sort of blew my mind.
In fact, I remember being disappointed by TLOU 1 when it came out because it felt worse than Uncharted for me. For the life of me, I’ve been baffled that Sony has stopped making games like it for a long time now. I just don’t get why publishers don’t understand that there’s a market out there for people that want fun, cinematic third person adventures that are about 10 hours long. Resident Evil gets it. The rest of the industry needs to remember.
Uncharted is the type of game that'll alway sell.. The possibilities in terms of story, location etc are endless. We should have an uncharted every generation.
Current day/Druckmann lead Naughty Dog take forever to make anything, and what they do make is woke garbage. Leave the Uncharted legacy untarnished.
My hope is that bend studio is continuing it.
Hopefully Drukmann hasn't blocked it.
I don't really see where they can go from Uncharted 4, to be honest. And Nate Drake got off pretty easy for a modern Druckmann game. Let it be.
@saffeqwe Well, throughout the series Nate and Sully recall many shared stories, I would love to see an Uncharted: Drake's Past where the focus is on Nate's past adventures with Sully when they were younger.
I won't play it without Nathan Drake.
@Shinnok789 I was wondering how far down before someone made the reference
Uncharted can go in different directions. Either branching out from one adventurer to another (my preference), or have Nathan Drake be like James Bond or the Simpsons, never aging, yet always contemporary. I could see both working. It's pulp fiction, so I don't see it being "depleted" from a story perspective.
For all of Expedition 33's game of the year awards, it's core message hasn't connected with people. Uncharted 4 was an amazing ending. Let art die
Make new IP, for those who come after!
Nooooo. No. No no no. Uncharted had a PERFECT ending that I hope they leave alone.
@Shinnok789 let it die! No one cared about them when they were alive. Now that they’re dead they’re the best thing ever. 🙄
Uncharted has:
It's funny how some people keeps demanding Sony / ND to make a new IP. But now they want ND to go back to Uncharted while also complaining "too many Horizon" and "too many GoW" lol. Did these people just realize now that making a new IP with selling power as good as Uncharted, GoW, or Horizon is a Herculean task and publisher / devs should try as hard as they can to keep the IP fresh before completely done and moves on to a new one?
Anyway. At this point Uncharted is pretty much done and in dormant state, unless ND decided the series deserves a revisit / revival.
@Areus Looking at some comments on GoW thread, we can add "too many GoW" and "Santa Monica creatively bankrupt" complaint to the "too many" list lol.
@ButterySmooth30FPS ikr lol.
Didn't we wrap things up narratively with Uncharted 4? Let's let Nathan enjoy a well earned respite
Yes the unchartered games are really fantastic ,and i would absolutely love another one i must admit, everything about these 4 games (5 if you include l.legacy),the exploration, cast ,humour ,writing ,graphics, simply unbeatable for the type of games that they are, unfortunately i cant see naughty dog doing another anytime soon what with the new one they are working on unless the franchise rights get sold or whatever to another company,i still go back sometimes to go back through them.yeah to me this series is what great gaming is all about ,really hope another is made at some point
Uncharted is my favourite series in all of gaming. But to be fair to Sony and Naughty Dog, Nate's story has been fully resolved.
A spin off in the same universe could work but I'm not sure it would have the same impact without Drake and Sully.
@IOI Agree.
@Nem i'm pretty sure the rumor was that sony bend was working on an uncharted game for ps5 and then asked to be removed from the project , if the project was canned or not idk.
@Bionic-Spencer Druckmann heading up the fourth game ended the series. Don't get me wrong, the 4th game is great, but I HATED that they poked fun at the supernatural spins of the previous games by joking about "ghost pirates" in-game. That was such a great aspect of past Uncharted games to always give a little bit of "unreal" grounded in myth and legend that opened up the play style to be pure unadulterated arcade fun. Ghost pirates would have been bad ass. All the other games handled it well but for some reason (always wanted to know the scoop on the drama that happened to drive Hennig out) they flipped off the entire series. And a brother out of nowhere!?!?! Come on, that was a weak plot direction.
Didn't Uncharted sales always kind of disappoint Sony? Not in the sense they were bad, clearly they weren't because they made a few of them. More in the greedy corporate sense. The sales were good but not blowing their socks off basically.
Essentially it was a tent poll series for them and the PS3 at a time they didn't have many of those (and still had competition). They've since come up with a handful of viable IP's and there's not much competition hardware wise. Perhaps they just don't think the roi will be great enough for Uncharted given the cost of such a game and yeah, they don't really need software to sell PS5s do they? They kind of just sell.
@PuppetMaster Consider that the people asking for more Uncharted might not be the same ones asking for new IP.
Also, they are not mutually exclusive in the first place. People can desire a balance of supporting established franchises while exploring new IP, and Sony can simultaneously fail at both.
It is okay for games and franchises to end on their own terms. You don't need sequels for the heck of it, if the development team feels they've done everything they possibly could with these characters.
Nathan Drakes story ended perfectly. This here is the problem with the games industry. Halo became a joke, MGS lost the plot even though gameplay got more refined, Gears lost its charm. Sly was given to a new developer and now he's stuck in a cliffhanger.
I'd love to see a new big-budget Uncharted game, full of explosions, thievery, and snark. But what I don't understand is Sony's reticence to use the Uncharted title in ways outside of that big-budget type game: there are a host of game types/modes that could bring us the characters and stories without the cost. An Uncharted Reigns game would be awesome (they just worked the Witcher into that style!), or even a Telltale-type chapter story (hell, even something like an Inkle game would be stupendously good with Nate, Elena, & company) would keep the name alive and draw new interest and new players. And while some kind of roguelike would be a shock, something replayably dramatic could be a smaller project that pays dividends (literally) - just see The Rogue Prince of Persia for a little inspiration. Or a reboot of the mobile puzzle Uncharted 4 playalong! Even a turn-based job like The Lamplighters' League but with Uncharted flavor and characters could hit a audience. Point being: not using the IP is WASTING the IP.
@MetalGear_Yoshi I never see any Sony higher ups who says they dissapointed with Uncharted sales. Early games while not sold a ton but they had efficient budget for AAA scale and turned profit.
And so far Uncharted series already sold more than 50 million copies with a big portion dominate by Uncharted 4 (18.6 million copies) and Nathan Drake Collection (10 million copies).
@PuppetMaster
Yeah, I think I heard it just last week on Jeff Gerstmans podcast. He didn't go into huge detail. From memory he was emphasising how weird expectations can be. He might have been recalling back to the original trilogy as well, again, it was an aside and not very detailed. Those later numbers seem pretty healthy though for sure.
It's kind of hard to call. I think a new Uncharted would do well but maybe in their minds they're thinking one; who will make it? Two; will they be able to make something that lives up to the IP's legacy? And three; how much will it cost? The AAA landscape is so drastically different now. The costs are huge and seemingly things have changed now but up until recently Sony was fixated on that live game money, rather than the modest roi you get from a single player game.
It could simply be that they will get there with Uncharted but it's just taking them time to move the boat around after they've recently changed strategies. It is a very big boat.
Yeah that is interesting, where is the Uncharted 1 to 3 remake? Should have had Bluepoint work on that. Or someone else.
Still what big IPs will they stick to? God of War and Gran Turismo sure, Uncharted you'd assume, Last of Us, Horizon, Ghost is just there I assume as it doesn't have 1 set character, Sucker Punch hasn't had that since the Sly games consistent characters across all 2 to 3 games (Infamous got Cole for 2/Festival of Blood or whatever went on there, and PS4 era ones had 2 separate characters).
Multiplayer other ones.
it's more then just Ubisoft pushing Assassin's Creed so much and Far Cry/other hanging on there.
Thing is what's the point, we getting to the point all these companies are just having 4 IPs they rely on, build up others with multiplayer and go for the COD/Activision format? Well that's boring.
Not to mention all of us not interested go elsewhere.
I liked Ubisoft still offering their niche titles, it gave me something to want to buy from them. Now none of these 3rd parties offer anything and 1st parties aren't doing ity for me besides Nintendo's niche games.
I mean EA offering My Sims was nice (accounts are the reason why, if i can't network off line with them like I skipped Fenix Rising/Lost Crown and Beyond Good and Evil 1 remaster, I think i have an EA account but I have no interest in using it, haven't for years) and they still have the Indie program but that's about it.
That aside whatever recent IPs, whatever older few they carried over into PS4 (I doubt Infamous or Killzone, I care about them but Sony doesn't or doesn't have enough interest to spin up a character or a group of them or whatever new character, I mean why not, in-between Marvel games have an Infamous, it doesn't have the same effect as Fallout/Outer Worlds but you could kind of go for that dynamic and build it up).
Wasnt there a clip years ago in a PS5 sizzle showing a girl in a cave that everyone felt was a new uncharted? Wonder what happened to that.
I'm more than ready for a new game. It doesnt have to be a massive - Lost Legacy was the perfect length. I think the series would still perform very well. Perhaps if the new Tomb Raider titles do well, Sony will take another look?
@RoomWithaMoose "People can desire a balance of supporting established franchises while exploring new IP, and Sony can simultaneously fail at both."
There's also an option to keep going on with established franchise and refresh it like it's a new IP.
But like i said, making a new IP alone is a Herculean task. You need full resources and commitment to support and established it or it will end up as a massive failure. In the same time you also needs to keep your established franchise at high quality or the fans will complaint and stop buying.
That's why devs, especially the ones who has limited resources, needs to choose carefully if they should keep going on with established IP or move on to a new one.
For ND, it's pretty clear they don't have enough resources to juggle between established franchise and a new IP. They can't juggle between Uncharted, TloU, and a new IP like Intergalactic. Hence why there's no new Uncharted for 8-9 years and looks like TloU is also in a semi-dormant state because they focus on Intergalactic.
I reckon the reason Uncharted is being left behind is because it's a PS3-born franchise. The examples mentioned came to life on PS4 and PS5 is still riding that wave (ok God of War started life on PS2, but the evolution was born on PS4).
Uncharted has had its latest game on PS4, just like Killzone and Infamous did, but now it's about the future and those franchises are of an era that has now passed. We have witnessed SONY take a generational approach to its iconic franchise, where they give rise to new IPs, then store them away.
There are of course exceptions such as the Ratchet & Clank series, but in order to make new generations of PlayStation stand out new franchises come in and several are put on the shelf.
@PuppetMaster Naughty Dog can't, but Sony can. We're already seen Bend take a crack at Uncharted, and the PSP/PSVita were rife with IP being handed to smaller developers. Even look at Microsoft, handing one of their biggest IPs (not saying much), Fable, to a trusted partner.
@JDINCINERATOR Agreed other then God of War, GT or Ratchet the rest are all PS4 related IPs or 2016+, they won't support Killzone or Infamous which I think is sad.
Infamous has more of a chance while a Killzone and others don't have the same impact they did in the past.
I get selling characters, and whatever worlds but yeah. The PS3 and under IPs for sure have characters/settings and gameplay they don't care about as much to try and sell to people.
Unless things like Twisted Metal that are just so out guesses, but it's a tv show so they won't bother with more vehicular combat or any type of cage match/other crazy angle games I assume (even if Destruction Allstars could have been that then the Fornite audience angle they went for that was super pointless and stupid).
I mean I thought Gas Guzzlers and others are fair for that sort of thing.
Uncharted I think works not just because of the 4th/Lost Legacy PS4 ones (where is the 1st to 3rd game, Golden Abyss not surprised they wouldn't be interested in touching it) but just in general, having something as 'light hearted' or adventure movie like their own Indiy/Tomb Raider (Activision won't with Pitfall for whatever reason they don't care to compete with that). compared to their other IPs.
I mean while Infamous you can see as more then a Fallout compared to Outer Worlds (Fallout the big title, Outer Worlds not as much but similar style, Marvel or any other IPs as the bigger ones, Infamous to compare, whether we comparing super hero angle or otherwise here, hopefully that makes sense), they could rework it or bring characters back in some way. Other games do bring characters back, try new ones, etc. Or age them up and work out a scenario for them.
I mean Sucker Punch keeps making new characters then just the 1 you follow through each era like the other Sony IPs.
I mean they could rework other IPs to be about the same family message/dark themes and what not, will audiences be happy, maybe not, but I mean they still could try to.
The other PS1 to PS3/PSP/Vita IPs I think can work but I see why they wouldn't care to.
Even Syphon Filter competing with Splintercell or Metal Gear, would Sony care about that? I doubt it.
I doubt Sackboy will get another, does Sony even care, will Astrobot take that place?
They care about teen/adult IPs and that's obvious, the rest are whatever 3rd party kids IPs that make deals and the niche stuff if they care to still offer more to Bandai Namco I guess if they do well.
I ask this every now and then. Sony is absolutely terrible at IP management. They go for stories first which makes it really hard to continue any franchise. Nintendo has the special formula well defined, go for gameplay first and you’ll have endless possibilities. They’ve been retelling the story of Link, Zelda and Ganon for decades and each game is better than the last!
There is nothing quite like Uncharted today. The closest we get to 3rd person shooter is Resident Evil in 3rd person and that is not even a shooter. Also why go for big budget games all the time? You can leave a lot of that to third parties. Explore with untapped genres that show what PS5 can do while being unique and fun.
I don’t know what to expect from PS6 really. Will it be just a computer-like hardware focused on multiplatform games with a few sequels from PS Studios that play the same as previous titles? They’re dropping the ball and letting Microsoft kick it, assuming thay MS figures out their Xbox Anywhere strategy right - why go for PS if you can play the same games across devices you might already own?
@Boomers-r-us No, they're not devoid of new ideas. Like the article said, the problem is AAA game development has gotten so expensive publisher and dev management are reluctant to green light something new. Even if a game earns GOTY nominations from critics and sells pretty well, if it "misses sales targets" set by the developer/publisher, that can get a studio shut down and everybody laid off.
Everybody says they want new ideas and new IP, but sales charts don't back that up. The top 12 selling games in the US in 2025:
1. BF6
2. NBA2K26
3. Borderlands 4
4. Monster Hunter: Wilds
5. BO7
6. Madden
7. College Football 26
8. FC 26 (#1 in Europe)
9. Oblivion: Remastered
10. BO6
11. Ghost of Yotei
12. MLB The Show 25
Gamers say they want new IP, but their buying habits say they don't. Many of these games do have new stories/settings but they all follow established formulas within the same franchise. Five of them are annualized sports games. Furthermore, everybody already knows what 2026's top two games will be, GTA and COD.
A game can get all the GOTY nominations possible and genuinely be an awesome game. If the game doesn't sell, developers and publishers ultimately don't care because video games are a business. AAA games are just too expensive to risk the investment on something that may not work.
Ironically, that's one of the reasons why I'm surprised Uncharted hasn't gotten a new game in a while.
@TheUnrestCure We've seen something like this with Tomb Raider. I don't know how well those non-AAA Tomb Raider games did. IMO, it ultimately still comes down to the same issue as developing brand new IP, risk aversion.
When a franchise has become identified as a certain type of game, using the IP in new ways is risky because many fans may say "What is this?!?! This isn't [insert franchise name]! I hate this!!" The game might make "enough" money simply because the costs are less with a Telltale type game, but the studio/publisher simultaneously has a PR mess with the franchise's most loyal and vocal fans to deal with. That kind of thing can end up harming preorders and initial sales of the next game in the franchise as fans wait to see if the developer/publisher has "screwed up" the next game.
Uncharted had its run and should be left alone. ND is worse with Druckmann in charge anyway. I wouldn't want him damaging the franchise. U4 somehow survived with him but it wasn't near the peak.
oh get Bluepoint on it... oh wait.
Sony ignoring Uncharted this generation is one of the biggest sticking points as to why I'm so pissed off at them. Same with The Last of Us. Part 1 did not need to be remade. Could've given us UC5 (or TLOU 3). It's been a mostly very disappointing generation on the 1st party front, save for Horizon and Astrobot.
@IOI It wasnt intended to end. That was the whole point and the reason why Amy made it a point to not age any of the characters, and always find a reason to split Nate and Elana up. They are supposed to be callbacks to the old serials, like what inspired Indiana Jones.
Just an series of jetsetting adventures featuring the cast doing crazy things, for viewers/players to get lost on an adventure looking for buried tressure.
Then Neil came in and mucked that up
i'm content with how the franchise ended. far too many people are afraid of closure and feel the need to suck the life out of a franchise. there is nothing worse than poor revival projects when the franchise has already run its course. it looks desperate, lazy and is the polar opposite of what game designers should strive for if they take their craft seriously.
now if sony wants to bring back the key members of ready at dawn and complete the order 1886 trilogy, sign me up!
@orvisbean101 That entire studio got cancelled. San Diego Studios or something like that.
@RoomWithaMoose And Golden Abyss, which still a pretty good Uncharted game imho, is the lowest selling (and rating) game in the series, outside the mobile games. It's the same as Sly Cooper 4 which not handle by Sucker Punch.
I'm personally okay with the idea of smaller devs working with an established IP. It's a neat idea but it also comes with a risk where these smaller devs messed up the quality standard already established by the original devs. I mean, just look at how people complaint about the recent Sons of Sparta got 69 at metacritic. Sony probably wouldn't let anyone outside Santa Monica work with GoW anymore after the complaints and 'low' rating...
Wonder how these hold up, never really played em.
@NavalHistorian oh dear did I upset someone, I go into a shop, I fancy something new to eat sadly all I'm presented with is what I ate yesterday and the day before..
1. Do I go hungry
2. Have what I've already had
I wouldn't want to go hungry so id buy something to eat plus they've just updated the packaging and improved the recipe, yum yum.
The story of Uncharted was the story of Nathan Drake, and that story has been told. I have no issue with them returning to established IP's but it has to make sense. You need a compelling reason to return and for me that is not a spin off about Chloe, his kid or Sully.
The Lost Legacy was alright, but it was also not Uncharted 5 and I don't think I would want a series run fronted by Chloe. I have nothing against playing as a female character, she just lacked Nathan's mannerisms / charm that made the originals. If they are to return to the series it has be when its right and when the studio wants to, if its forced it will be a bad experience.
@Midnyte-Monkey I played A Thief's End and The Lost Legacy for the first time recently, and IMO they're great. I read this article because immediately after finishing them I wanted more. As many have already written, A Thief's End has an epilogue that could easily set up another game with an older Drake accompanying his kid.
The new characters in The Lost Legacy I think could also carry the franchise forward because, unlike the recent Wolfenstein spinoff, IMO The Lost Legacy still plays and "looks" like it's part of the franchise. Hopefully, Naughty Dog will be able to get back to the franchise someday. I don't think a game franchise is necessarily ever "dead," it's all about the execution. The writing, gameplay, etc.
I LOVE Uncharted. But that story was told, not every franchise needs to go forever, in fact they are often better if they don't.
If it does come back it really needs to reinvent itself similar to how God of War did in 2018, or how Mario or Zelda frequently does, it can't just be more of the same 20 years later.
@NavalHistorian yes I enjoyed Lost Legacy and Chloe/Nadine worked surprisingly well with great chemistry. Better than Nate and his Brother did IMO.
This choice would also tick the "modern audience" boxes that Neil is obsessed with, but without causing the eye rolling that would accompany them making a game about Nates daughter.
I actually thought that Lost Legacy was priming a spin off series of games, so I'm surprised it didn't happen.
That 76 million units for god of war, is that an official number?
Remember when 'Live from PS5' got everyone excited? 💀
@Ravix I just got a PS5 so I'm new to this "party." When did this screenshot get released and what was the context?
Loved every one of these games and really miss the characters. As much as I love seeing new stuff, I have to admit I'd be super hyped to see the franchise return. Would be well up for a Cassie-plus-old-man-Drake adventure. I could easily imagine something like Sully dying motivating the Drakes to get back out there, to carry on some half-finished adventure in his memory.
@NavalHistorian it was some live-action advert marketing PS5 a few years ago, almost like a soft-relaunch featuring all the franchises with PS5 games that are out or coming soon: spider-man 2, God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon FW etc. But it also featured a woman with a torch, which didn't directly resemble any Sony ps5 game, so people thought it meant it was Uncharted 5 and that would be announced at some point. But then it wasn't.

You could still look back at it and say "well, there's some Samurai types riding away from a burning location" which could have been a Yotei hint way before it's release, if one wanted to revive such rumours of the Torch Woman meaning Uncharted 5 👀 but I wouldn't want to do that...
Also, Enjoy the PS5 😁 Plenty of games to get stuck into for a new owner!
@Americansamurai1 No just estimates but GoW III sold 10 million and GoW 2018 + Ragnarok sold 38+ million copies. So, 76 million looks possible.
I would be pumped to continue in the world of Uncharted one day. Thankfully Indiana Jones scratched that itch big time for me. I hope the new Tomb Raider also nails it.
@PuppetMaster with the show and the next game, series should get close to the 100 million mark.
@PuppetMaster golden abyss was a vita game though. And vita was a flop. Kinda pointless to compare sales
I’d love more Uncharted games!! The idea you mentioned about Uncharted in the 70s with Sully sounds awesome. A prequel, a sequel, a spin off with other characters - bring them all on!
When uncharted 4 came out, didn't they say it was going to be their last numbered game? The one after that was a spin-off.
I would love to see more Uncharted.
But it would have to be something worthwhile. The story would need to be really good, the same level as the other 4/5.
I can imagine a game where you play as Cassie, starting out as a rookie treasure seeker. Maybe with Chloe Fraser as a mentor?
The Tomb Raider reboot trilogy was fantastic, so I do not see why this idea could not work just as well.
Uncharted : The Next Generatiion.
@Americansamurai1 Yeah that's very possible.
@saffeqwe Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time was a PS3 + Vita game and it also doesn't sold well. But my point isn't the comparison but it's about handling established IP to smaller devs is a neat idea but comes with a risk that these smaller devs could messed up the IP legacy.
Not sure I'd be too excited for a Cassie Drake fronted game. Young woman adventurer/archaeologist? We already have that series, it's called Tomb Raider.
Great question, I reached a point where I honestly wouldn’t even be against a remake. Better than nothing at all. I’ve loved literally every uncharted game I’ve ever played so I’m not particularly picky at this stage.
@Areus way better games.. easy
@Haruki_NLI We literally got a new Ratchet and Clank in 2021, after we got Miles Morales in 2020. Insomniac has since released Spider-Man 2, and we’re about to get Wolverine this year. How many games you expect Insomniac to release in a 5-6 year span?
@wildcat_kickz Strange logic you’re using. You’re complaining about getting 5 different Horizon games in 10 years, but what about the fact that we got like 7 different Uncharted games in a 10 year span? We got 4 mainline Uncharted games, and 3 spinoffs from 2007-2017, and you’re still asking for more. Just admit you don’t like Horizon, instead pretending you’re unbiased
I’m a big fan of this franchise but the story is over and done. I think it is time for a new adventure game.
@Nicekix Two things can be true at the same time. I do like Uncharted more than Horizon, but that’s beside the point. As I already said, we haven’t had an Uncharted game in 9 years, so it’s pretty understandable that people miss the franchise and want a new one.
Sony is not doing anything! People are still on the same games from 2 years ago because there's nothing new worth playing.
@The-punishr if only Bluepoint were around 😩😩😩
@Areus Uncharted has 6 games since starting in 2007. Horizon has 6 games out or announced, not even including Horizon 3, which is certainly in active development. And this is only since 2017, 10 years after the start of Uncharted.
I mean, right now, there are at least 3 Horizon projects in active development. And before the VR game was done, that number was 4. To my knowledge, no franchise in Sony history has been milked on that level. And Horizon isn’t nearly as beloved as games like GoW or Uncharted. It feels like a form of nepotism with this happening only since Hermen Hulst took charge.
Interesting comments from everyone. I do think story wise they really put uncharted on a closed book ending but that doesn’t mean a spin off as mentioned couldn’t work, however I think it could be very tricky to market as they’d potentially be making a copy of tomb raider.
Which may not be a bad style to use in the UC world with Nathan’s child as the star, however the story would really have to come first and to do that, sorry to say, I’d kill him off so she can “find” a mystery that his wife doesn’t know about to kick start a fresh adventure.
Sony need to pull Uncharted from the hands of Druckmann and make a new trilogy in my opinion. Uncharted is my topmost fond memories from Playstation together with Bloodborne.
But Sony doesn't seem to want my money so...
@Areus Uncharted had good writing, characters, dialogs and story. Horizon series on the other side.. nice huge colorful open world and stupid story, cringe dialogs, boring characters and writing and game pace is .. ridiculously boring.
That’s the case why ppl want Uncharted
It's crazy we did not get an Uncharted this gaming generation. it's just sad how bad this generation has been if you've been gaming since the days of Sega.
It's crazy Sony hyped Live Service games more than single player this generation and at least a few of those Live series games have died and will eventually die.
