After losing the December 2025 sales battle to the Switch 2, PS5 was once again the best-selling console in the US this January, ranked by both units and dollar sales.
The console, which is now more than five-years-old, was propped up by some lingering holiday bundles. But while it doesn’t sound like there was a huge amount of difference between the devices, it’s still impressive to see Sony’s system coming out on top against Nintendo’s all-new machine.
The most important news is that the industry saw a 3% improvement in overall sales year-over-year – hardly revolutionary, but better than a decline in this challenged economy.

Elsewhere, there are few highlights to speak of – January is always slow – but Ghost of Yotei continues to sell extraordinarily well, much to the chagrin of a select few on social media. And it’s also worth acknowledging Code Vein 2, which was the only new release to chart.
Here’s the top 20 software sales for the month:

PS and switch leading the way gains on different territories etc. excellent.
Look COD at the top of the game chart 😫
Looking at the game charts, Xbox should give up on hardware now and might do after the changes and stick with publishing.
Happy to see FF7, Ghost of Yotei and KCD2 making the list
Nice to see Yotei still hanging in the top 20. But wait, i wonder if these result even enough for Hermen the clown...
Yotei’s Legend mode will be dope.
Pixel flow sounds like an amazing game.
Cant wait to not play it.
@mrbone it will be, but launches at a busy time!
@PuppetMaster
“Hermen the Clown”
There’s a nice ring to that! 🤔
@mrbone it will be, but launches in a very busy time!
Look at those great results! Time to close another studio and make them even better.
@Ainu20 yeah exactly. I’m still in mourning. I’ve started another playthrough on Demons remake and been continuing my platinum run on MGS3 vita by Bluepoint. Also my mate has made it his aim to get 100% trophies on all the Uncharted remasters. I hope Bluepoint know how loved they are/were
This kind of stuff is why Herman still has a job.
The Switch 2's over-performing in Japan but underperforming in the Western market. Not sure Nintendo will be happy about that given the higher profit margins on the western devices and the strong USD will mean higher profits on FX.
Regarding PlayStation it's an impressive feat but sadly what would've been a really strong week has been a ***** sandwich. Yotei is a great game and I think Sucker Punch continues to be the blueprint with Insomniac for smart, focused development. I think Housemarque fits in this too if Saros matches Returnals quality.
Xbox did better than I expected with Hardware given the insane cost of the device but I don't know how to feel about the future of the platform.
It's always good to see PS5 on top, even as a 5 year old console, against the Switch 2.
Going to get even worst for Nintendo once the rumoured price increase comes into effect. They will need to start charging more for basic game boy ports and upgrades next.
For anyone interested in getting a Switch 2 id say do it now. Hopefully there's some big games coming this year that they haven't announced yet.
They should focus on selling PS5 pros. And consumers should look to it. The machine is good enough to compete with 1000+ dollar-machines.
Consoles typically peak late in life like this. Sale prices have been decent, and there's plenty of software out for the system that's compelling.
The lack of any big games announced for Switch 2 probably doesn't help either.
Helldivers 2 having strong legs doesn’t surprise me. Great game. Doable solo but the chaotic fun is even better in multiplayer.
I’m also glad Ghost of Yotei continues to thrive. It’s a really fun, well paced open world game whose side missions were always interesting/lovingly crafted.
I’m sure Switch 2 will do fine. It hasn’t had a Pokémon game yet.
KCD2 in there a full year after release. Love to see it.
Just a reminder that the only reason the Switch 2 beat the PS5 in December is because retailers went rouge and dropped the price just to get them off the shelves. Even then, a 5 year old console running neck and neck with a debut system in it's first holiday season is pretty impressive for the former, and pretty embarrassing for the latter.
A home console is still selling next to a new handheld console, say it ain’t so
Sony is floundering…
…in the minds of obsessives on the internet.
Oh, and Nintendo is totally different despite selling all the same things in all the same segments!
@nomither6 Hybrid console, it combined both Nintendos home and handheld market into one, so let's no lt pretend it doesn't have a bigger market audience than playstation.
Switch 2 is my favorite handheld. Great addition to my PS5. Currently playing Switch 2 more
I dont see the switch 2 getting good sales until a Pokemon and or Zelda game hits the platform. The initial boost was Nintendo die hards that haven't played Cyberpunk or any of the old games that are going to that platform.
@Enuo On the positive side, with most retailers going “rouge”, nearly all shoplifters last month were caught red-handed!
It’s pretty interesting that saleswise CoD has surged past Battlefield despite Battlefield having stronger initial sales.
Nintendo has not really had any big hitters for Switch 2, and Metroid Prime 4 was a shadow of the previous 3
Yotei might be the best PS5 game in years, so it makes me very happy seeing it have continued success. Hopefully it gives confidence to SuckerPunch to continue with the gameplay core they developed for two Ghost games.
@UltimateOtaku91 - Lollers “things are going to get worse for Nintendo.” You act like the Switch 2 had a Wii U level of decline in sales. If Nintendo produces great games, the console will sell itself… unless it goes up some obnoxious amount in price.
@jFug @PuppetMaster I’m an old fart and we used to have “Homie da clown” 🤡 and he used to say “Homie don’t play that.” That’s freaking Hermen, he’s “Hermen da clown” and he says “Hermen don’t play that” referring to single player games 😂
@j2c I’m waiting for “Hermen in da unemployment line”
I really hate how greedy Nintendo got since Switch's success. Hope they struggle at some point soon.
Switch 2 is the exact example What's going to happen if ps6 get's delayed. You get a nice on the surface product with insufficient out of date internals
@nomither6 Oh look, another totally disingenuous comment. The Switch 2 is clearly a hybrid console and has been pointed out to you, rolled Nintendo's handheld and home console business into one. Want a handheld Nintendo? You buy a Switch 2. Want a console for the home from Nintendo? You buy a Switch 2.
You might be familiar with it's predecessor - it's close to becoming the highest-selling console of all time, and the exact same business model has helped it do so.
@PuppetMaster
I don't think it's just Hermen's fault, hoot; something with shareholders will also play a major role in what's happened recently.
@nomither6 it ain't so
I'm sorry but the PS5 selling lots of consoles is like when the Wii outsold the 360 and PS3
It don't mean nothing, I know at least 6 people at work that own PS5's and they either use it to watch films, play FIFA, or play warzone, I try to talk to them about upcoming games and they don't even know what I'm talking about.
@MrPeanutbutterz He won't reply, he knows when he's cooked 😂. He just spouts Sony hate nosnese whilst bigging up PC but as soon as someone corrects him he's no where to be seen.
@jFug @j2c He will be forever stuck with that name lol.
@TommyNL All Bluepoint games received positive receptions and most of them sold well too. I think the shareholders doesn't have problems nor they agreed to close the studio.
This is just Hermen try to dodge his mismanagement. He's the one who put Bluepoint to do a GoW live service game when the devs already said they want to make at least one original IP after they done with Demon's Souls remake.
@MrPeanutbutterz wipe your monocle, it's fogging up🧐
@PuppetMaster Bluepoint is known as the master of remasters of single player games but before that they made an original game whose expansion was multiplayer focused and when they were bought by Sony they talked about they were now able to move beyond remasters.
Clearly gamers were happy with Bluepoint’s remasters but given their history and their old public statements it’s possible that they wanted to make a multiplayer game.
Of course that doesn’t make the dissolution of Bluepoint less of an outrage (I don’t know what happened in the year between project cancellation snd studio closure but Sony should have worked out something).
@Oram77 I'm especially happy for KCD2.
The success of the Switch 2 is baffling to me. I don't mean to knock anyone's enjoyment of it, I hope they like it, but really, what is on there that you can't play on any other console? Some kiddie themed games, Mario Kart, Metroid, and Donkey Kong. The same tired games we get every generation. The first console I ever bought with my own money was the original NES. Since then, I've owned every Nintendo console except the WiiU, which I was very tempted to buy a few times. But I have absolutely zero interest in the Switch 2. They still haven't fixed the drifting controllers (all of my Switch ones were affected ever AFTER getting them fixed), the games are overpriced, and the peripherals are costly as well. My daughter and I played Mario Kart World for a good 20 minutes at the store together. I asked her what she thought, and she said it was boring. I agreed. The PS5 costs what, only $50 more? You get a catalog 3 times the size and a more powerful device. What's the point?
@UltimateOtaku91 That's because they didn't have their homework finished for school this morning and had their digital privileges taken away 😂
