After losing the December 2025 sales battle to the Switch 2, PS5 was once again the best-selling console in the US this January, ranked by both units and dollar sales.
The console, which is now more than five-years-old, was propped up by some lingering holiday bundles. But while it doesn’t sound like there was a huge amount of difference between the devices, it’s still impressive to see Sony’s system coming out on top against Nintendo’s all-new machine.
The most important news is that the industry saw a 3% improvement in overall sales year-over-year – hardly revolutionary, but better than a decline in this challenged economy.

Elsewhere, there are few highlights to speak of – January is always slow – but Ghost of Yotei continues to sell extraordinarily well, much to the chagrin of a select few on social media. And it’s also worth acknowledging Code Vein 2, which was the only new release to chart.

PS and switch leading the way gains on different territories etc. excellent.
Look COD at the top of the game chart 😫
Looking at the game charts, Xbox should give up on hardware now and might do after the changes and stick with publishing.
Happy to see FF7, Ghost of Yotei and KCD2 making the list
Nice to see Yotei still hanging in the top 20. But wait, i wonder if these result even enough for Hermen the clown...
Yotei’s Legend mode will be dope.
Pixel flow sounds like an amazing game.
Cant wait to not play it.
@mrbone it will be, but launches at a busy time!
@PuppetMaster
“Hermen the Clown”
There’s a nice ring to that! 🤔
@mrbone it will be, but launches in a very busy time!
Look at those great results! Time to close another studio and make them even better.
@Ainu20 yeah exactly. I’m still in mourning. I’ve started another playthrough on Demons remake and been continuing my platinum run on MGS3 vita by Bluepoint. Also my mate has made it his aim to get 100% trophies on all the Uncharted remasters. I hope Bluepoint know how loved they are/were
This kind of stuff is why Herman still has a job.
The Switch 2's over-performing in Japan but underperforming in the Western market. Not sure Nintendo will be happy about that given the higher profit margins on the western devices and the strong USD will mean higher profits on FX.
Regarding PlayStation it's an impressive feat but sadly what would've been a really strong week has been a ***** sandwich. Yotei is a great game and I think Sucker Punch continues to be the blueprint with Insomniac for smart, focused development. I think Housemarque fits in this too if Saros matches Returnals quality.
Xbox did better than I expected with Hardware given the insane cost of the device but I don't know how to feel about the future of the platform.
It's always good to see PS5 on top, even as a 5 year old console, against the Switch 2.
Going to get even worst for Nintendo once the rumoured price increase comes into effect. They will need to start charging more for basic game boy ports and upgrades next.
For anyone interested in getting a Switch 2 id say do it now. Hopefully there's some big games coming this year that they haven't announced yet.
They should focus on selling PS5 pros. And consumers should look to it. The machine is good enough to compete with 1000+ dollar-machines.
