Sony allegedly has a functioning Switch 2 build of tentpole exclusive Gran Turismo 7.
Word comes by way of Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, who’s broken stories regarding the inner-workings of PlayStation in the past. He rarely misses on a State of Play date, for example, and even seemed to be aware of the shadow drop for God of War: Sons of Sparta.
In an off-the-cuff comment during his Game Mess Mornings livestream last week – as spotted belatedly by Reddit – he mentioned that he “heard recently that Gran Turismo is running on the Switch 2”.
He continued that he doesn’t believe the game will release on the Switch 2, but that he found it interesting nonetheless.
This is a particularly strange story because, if accurate, we’re not sure why Sony would go to all the trouble of requesting the notoriously difficult to obtain Switch 2 devkits for a tech demo.
We’ve seen some people speculate that Polyphony Digital may have been experimenting with a lower-spec build of the sim racer ahead of the release of PlayStation’s purported new portable, but wouldn’t it have access to the prototype hardware the company’s designing anyway? It’s a first-party studio, after all.
And if not, aren’t there a dozen other easily accessible handhelds on the market for it to mess around with?
It’s worth remembering Gran Turismo 7 is also available on the PS4, so it probably would scale perfectly fine to the Switch 2’s hardware.
But Sony’s always treated Gran Turismo as a sacred franchise – it’s one of the few first-party series not available on PC.
So, it seems unlikely the platform holder would port this game to the Switch 2 – especially when the Nintendo console doesn’t have analogue triggers or robust steering wheel support, which are largely required to experience the series at its best.
What do you think? Is there potential in porting Gran Turismo 7 to Nintendo’s machine? Do you even believe this story to begin with? Let us know below.
