Guerrilla Games Came Up with Its Own Upscaling Tech for Decima Engine, and It Rivals PSSR 1

Earlier this week, Sony shared the PC specs required to run Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and it came with a small but interesting detail that's worth highlighting.

As it turns out, Guerrilla Games, makers of Horizon, implemented its own upscaling solution for titles made using its Decima engine.

Decima hasn't been used for very many games to date, but Horizon Forbidden West, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and Death Stranding 2 are shining examples of the sort of image quality its capable of producing.

We now know Guerrilla's bespoke upscaling technology is named Pico, and that it was employed for DS2 and is an option for players of the upcoming PC version.

Notably, this tech is utilised instead of PSSR on PS5 Pro, meaning Guerrilla opted to develop its own solution and forego the de facto option.

The results, as highlighted by Digital Foundry over a year ago, are excellent, rivalling established upscaling tech on PC such as DLSS:

It's interesting to see Guerrilla going its own path instead of simply adopting PSSR.

A so-called PSSR 2.0 is apparently incoming, which will upgrade the default PlayStation tech. PS5 Pro owners will definitely want to keep tabs on that front, but it'll also be worth paying attention to what Guerrilla chooses to do in future now it has an upscaling tool purpose-built for its own engine.
