Earlier this week, Sony shared the PC specs required to run Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and it came with a small but interesting detail that's worth highlighting.
As it turns out, Guerrilla Games, makers of Horizon, implemented its own upscaling solution for titles made using its Decima engine.
Decima hasn't been used for very many games to date, but Horizon Forbidden West, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and Death Stranding 2 are shining examples of the sort of image quality its capable of producing.

We now know Guerrilla's bespoke upscaling technology is named Pico, and that it was employed for DS2 and is an option for players of the upcoming PC version.
Notably, this tech is utilised instead of PSSR on PS5 Pro, meaning Guerrilla opted to develop its own solution and forego the de facto option.
The results, as highlighted by Digital Foundry over a year ago, are excellent, rivalling established upscaling tech on PC such as DLSS:
It's interesting to see Guerrilla going its own path instead of simply adopting PSSR.
A so-called PSSR 2.0 is apparently incoming, which will upgrade the default PlayStation tech. PS5 Pro owners will definitely want to keep tabs on that front, but it'll also be worth paying attention to what Guerrilla chooses to do in future now it has an upscaling tool purpose-built for its own engine.

I said it once and I'll say it thousand more times, Decima engine master race
Horizon Zero Performance Dips
Horizon Forbidden Resolutions
I got nothing for the third one.
Maybe this IS PSSR 2.0, and it's Hermen's solution.
If they rivalled pssr, then maybe they can even make their own power saving mode.
It's an impressive engine no doubt.
The Decima engine is a seriously impressive bit of tech. You’d think more ps studios would utilize it
Upscaling is the least of Hinters Gathering problem
Guerilla’s superior upscaling tech, Bluepoint’s god-tier lighting tech. A company would have to be in complete disarray to let either one go.
I hope they helped with PSSR 2.0 cause they really are technically one of the best over there at Guerrilla Games
The thing that impresses me most with Guerilla is Decima games don't have ray tracing and they still look better than most RT games
Forbidden west on ps5 pro is most likely the game with the best image quality on consoles.
@Reeneman made worse by the stupid glowing characters
Bluepoint.
Now that that’s out of the way. Excited for this. Love the series and the dev. I think PSSR has done well for what it’s been. But they’re not using it enough to justify the Pro. Even though I have one and love it.
Absolutely masters HFW voted best PS5 Pro visuals by DF.
PSSR does shine in some games ACS and GOY, but neither of these touch HFW.
I remember getting up to 100 fls on Forbidden West and it looked absolutely stunning. And that was on base PS5. Can't imagine how the Pro looks. Hands down the best engine. Then you get UE5 nonsense that struggles to hit 60 and look far worse.
i'll say this forbiden west , and zero dawn on the ps5 pro look amazing, and to me to crank out a game that looks like that on something like the the ps5 pro , is crazy , when you would need to buy a pc at least easily over 2,000 - 3,000 dollars to produce the same.
@Andy22385 it looks amazing , that alone was worth upgrading my tv for the ps5 pro for , not only does it look so good but it plays so smooth too.
As far as I remember on this subject from reading up at the time, this upscaling tech only works with 3 caveats: 1) High pre upscale res, 2) fixed not dynamic res, 3) very difficult to get it to apply to a different engine.
Hence why it can only be used in very specific situations, unlike PSSR which needs to cover all uses.
Not in their mp game, they won't lmao😂🤣
Yeah prob cause we won't really see it in full force until Horizon 3 and that will more then likely be on ps6. So I would hope that they have upscaling tech that is better then what will be on current gen with PSSR 2.0
I still can't believe this engines and what it can do. I have yet to play Forbidden West but I already know my mind will be blown away in terms of how it looks.
