How big is the open world in Death Stranding? It's hard to tell right now, because most of the gameplay footage we've seen has taken place in what appears to be very similar environments. In the latest trailer, we do get a look at some new areas, such as a forest and a snowy mountain. Speaking of mountains, Hideo Kojima has tried to explain the scope of the sandbox you'll be navigating, and there's something familiar about what he says.
It seems like Kojima has been trading notes with Bethesda's Todd Howard. Joking aside, it looks like that mountain in the distance of the first shot is the same one we see Sam scaling later in the trailer. Impressive stuff.
It's going to be interesting to find out how big the map actually is; Horizon Zero Dawn proves that the Decima engine is capable of producing a sizeable and varied open world while maintaining incredible visuals. Hopefully we'll see more of what the environment has to offer soon.

Oh sod it kojima, I've pre ordered!!
It's not about the scale of the map but the amount to do within it. It'll be no good if it's all barren with nothing to do.
Welcome to open worlds, Koj.
did he just hit us with the pitch from Breath of the Wild?
I am not sure the size of the open world is important until we know the type of game. We only know what it's not: "not a stealth game". As long as it doesn't turn into a boring walking simulator (doubtful coming from Kojima), that's cool with me.
@vitalemrecords My thought exactly. And it made me want to revisit it.
''See the Moon? You can go there.''
Tell me lies, tell me sweet little lies!?!
Good headline.
@Rhaoulos @vitalemrecords He should have followed it up with - "But don't worry, we're not going to take the time to show you how cool the interactive map is, only to take it out of the game later so the PS4 version isn't better than the PS5 version." 😝
Considering its made by horizon zd decima engine, I’m sure the world will be beautiful 😍
@vitalemrecords Bethesda already doing open world exploration games before nintendo switch ever exist lol.
Think he just realised how still confused people are even after all these trailers. He is trying to explain but still confusing people all the more. As I said I hope this game makes sense because I can't pre-order a game am not sure about just because of the creators past glories, Just Look at man united. DieKaiser92.. Ouut!!!
@Rhaoulos
Why would you absolutely want to put a label on the'type of game'?
It's open world and third person perspective. That's enough as 'type' goes for me. The rest is more about the game s identity.
What type of game is HZD?
@JJ2 People like to put things in boxes
I've seen enough to know that there's enough variety between exploration, combat, stealth, plenty of narrative elements, a big variety in settings; from sci-fi tech labs, and weird Lovecraft-esque alien landscapes to old WWII battlefields. And a motorcycle, do we need any more?! Yes we do, the frickin' ladder!!
Can I place a giant ladder up the side of a mountain & ride my motorbike up to the top? Hahaha
I have hope knowing he's using HZD's engine but just hope it's not as barren as MGSV - one of the most overrated games this gen. I hope the protag can take a break and sleep, one thing I disliked about HZD - Aloy never slept. And Alexios/Kass be meditating like a Witcher... pfft please. This why I love R* open worlds.
The trailers seem to show climbing abilities, something which was missing from HDZ and resulted in many of my sessions full of trying to hop up the sides of mountains.
I cant wait for this game. Never has a game gripped me so hard before. This cyber punk and ghosts of tsushima Are the only new games I want after I beat sekiro and rdr2 and gow.
@Octane I’m surprised I’ve not seen anyone mentioning the final line in the trailer when Mads’ character is talking to the screen. I think it’s supposed to be the baby but seems like he’s talking to the players too and says about exploring the whole world and also the moon.
I know it’s not feasible but maybe a clever trick to make it seem like it. Intriguing anyway.
@BearsEatBeets I mean, it's not going to be Earth-sized. But I do think we're going to the Moon at some point in the game.
@NintendoFan4Lyf I think the mountain comment is iconic to todd howard lol, but seriously I’m super impressed the first time I play bethesda elder scrolls open world games, I really hope bethesda will be using more capable engine for their next-gen elder scrolls games.
I think sam is like snake in mgs, can defend himself but it’s not a good strategy to go all action on enemy.
@Neolit See, that's why I'm not too into online.
@vitalemrecords I sincerely hope the exploration is a LOT more interesting and entertaining than that game.
@Neolit "Damn, that still hurts."
I swear if it would have skipped Wii U - like numerous other games scheduled to be on it - I would have been so done w/ Nintnedo. I think they figured - probably rightly so - they could get away w/ dumping the map, or any Gamepad screen use at all for that matter - b/c they got to say "Look, Wii U is still getting the game, so stop complaining." That "distraction" comment was the worst though, said by the guy who put the Gamepad screen to good use in WW HD and TP HD. To bad he didn't tell Miyamoto about the "distraction" before forcing it on people who didn't want it in Starfox Zero. OK I'll stop now.
@NintendoFan4Lyf "The Gamebryo-based Creation Engine has GOT to go!"
This sentence is really weird out of context. And I read it in context. Oh don't mind me, still going thru GOT withdrawals.
@JJ2 HZD is a story driven open world adventure action/rpg.
It doesn't need to be a single type, but 3rd person open world means absolutely nothing. It is the equivalent of saying a film is CGI... I am curious to know what this is about, if there is a combat system, how much you interact with the world around you, etc. I am intrigued but I won't be interested until we actually know something real the game.
@Rhaoulos
You can give it the exact same label apart from rpg
@TheArt MGSV was missing events in the open world. Why do you never see the Soviets and Afghanis fight, and so on? MGS4 had competing forces fighting each other, but V had none of that.
@NintendoFan4Lyf The GOT DTs are almost as bad as all the GOT RTs in my twitter feed. Thanks for understanding.
@Orpheus79V Yea it was so empty, no villages with civilians, nothing. Just you against the world, it's obvious MGSV shoulda been linear.
I loved Fallout 3's world, it had the perfect balance between size and exploration.
Who cares, he really thinks this is some new achievement? Everything he does now is miles behind what's already been done.
Plenty of games have the 'See it, visit it'. Manta.
This is going to be insane!
Who else wants the collector's edition baby?
@TheArt I think it would have been much better had they taken Ground Zeroes's gameplay structure, but expanded it into a full game with multiple bases. Kind of like Hitman then.
Using a Jetpack would be super cool though.
@Simon_Fitzgerald Agreed. The world in Death Stranding looks gorgeous but I'm hoping there could be at least unique events scattered through out the landscape.
I can do that already in Breath of the Wild, Kojima.
Jokes aside though I really love to see that kind of thing in open world games. If this game will offer a more realistic take on mountain climbing (as opposed to BotW where Link is apparently Spider-Man) then I'm sold.
Yeah, you can climb that mountain. You can even put a ladder across it horizontally. It'll be fine, no matter how silly it looks.
I haven't pre ordered a game in years.
I've pre ordered this.
I don't understand why people are upset that they're still confused by what the story is... The game isn't out yet. We're not meant to know what's going on, Kojima always keeps people in the dark with his trailers (Raiden). This looks like one of the most imaginative and creative games I've seen in years, it looks unique and different, yet people are complaining because they can't explain or understand what it is yet. I'm on board, I don't need to be told or shown everything. I'd rather not see any more trailers and just enjoy the game when it releases.
@AFCC Oh I can only wish to have that baby and the jar! XD
@wiiware what strange person would see what I typed and think what you typed was an appropriate response?
like - nobody cares - Bethesda didn't invent the open world game - so why mention that?
jesus you guys suck.
@Applejackson75 Breath of the Wild is a perfect game IMHO.
@Homo-Ludens I'm seriously thinking about getting it lol
@vitalemrecords Yo! Chill my man xD
@NintendoFan4Lyf @rjejr I got some bad news for your PTSD my friends:
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2018/11/bethesda_will_keep_the_same_fundamental_game_engine_for_the_elder_scrolls_vi_starfield
Though I hope they changed their minds since that post came out.
Cool. I'm more interested in what you can do in the open world, though. Taking the BotW example, a lot of interactions were possible with the open world itself (foraging for food; chopping down trees; taking advantage of the in-game physics systems in battle; surviving the weather; etc.), not to mention the numerous puzzles and mini-dungeons the player was constantly finding that made exploration rewarding.
If an open world is just an overly large space to walk around in, devoid of meaningful interactions, then I'd prefer a more linear adventure that doesn't waste my time. What I've seen of MGSV's open environments doesn't inspire confidence in this aspect of Death Stranding, frankly.
@vitalemrecords I think if gamers heard the mountain stuff in open world games, the first things they’ve thought is todd howard open world elder scrolls games. Like, that “see the mountain, you can go there” catchphrase is iconic to todd howard/elder scrolls games, not zelda botw. Type “see that mountain” in google, the first search is todd howard from know your meme lol.
@RawnDawn Confession - I've never actually played an Elder Scrolls game. Don't see me starting now. Well technically I played the first hour of Skyrim on PS3 and meant to go back to it but never did. I avoid first person games, and by the time I found out I could play Skyrim in 3rd person the moment had passed. I'm pretty sure I'll be done gaming by the time the next one comes out on PS6.
Amazing. PS4 has been the console to get if you love open world games. Looks like another AAA entry to the library.
Kojima need for a crazy narrative, DECIMA ability to create a realistic world to put it in and Yoji shinkawa art to give it form.
Already pre-order!!
Phew i thought was gonna be a walking simulator but mountain hiking simulator sound waaaaaay better.
