@UltimateOtaku91 None in the article that give sign Sega will abandon disc / cartridge and just put a code in the box. And a code in a box not gonna sell just like a code in a piece of paper aka gift cards.
But i'm okay if they go with a disc / cartridge + a digital copy. Physical movies has done it for years where they include a bluray / DVD and a code for digital version. Heck, they can charge a bit more as long as i get my physical games.
@L_R_V The biggest and also have the utmost worst consumers practice in the industry with very heavy MTX, gacha pull crap, pay-to-win walls, and misleading ads. Not to mention tons if not most of mobile games are low effort garbage and no guarantee they will refund your money when the time they shut down / delisted the games.
So, I rather play a buggy / incomplete game in a disc / cartridge over mobile games that bombard me with ads every 5 seconds or block me from playing because i used all the fuel or energy.
@Mifunefan I think going retro is the best route for us physical fans. I'm currently saving money so i can get Sega Mega Drive and PS2, probably will get a SNES and GBA SP too. Combine with my PS1-5, Vita, and 3DS collection, i'll have enough catalogue to play video games for the rest of my life.
@PanFriedSoup Yeah really miss the era where physical games always get instruction booklet. It's ironic looking at what Sony doing right now, they made one of the best and my favorite instruction booklet with Puppeteer. Not just it's full color but the design looks unique and has cute artworks too.
These days most physical copy either get that warning paper sheet, a registration sheet, or nothing at all. Games are more expensives than NES, PS1, and PS2 era but these billions dollar companies doesn't even bother giving us a nice instruction booklet anymore :/
I strongly believe that this has everything to do with wanting to be the sole retailer
Pretty much Sony wants to get full revenue by abandon retailers and kill second hand market with this decision. Funny thing is they still need retailers to sell their console.
Don't get me started with the "But they're going to sell codes at retailers!" Those will sell dismally if it all - nobody wants them, and they won't be priced competitively.
Yup. There's only one supermarket near my neighbourhood who bother to sell PSN, Netflix, Steam, and Apple store gift cards and every time i go there, the shelf where they put those gift cards always looks like nobody bother to touch it for years.
I'm not even surprise if this codes on paper will be very limited quantity.
It's weird how Matt decided to double down his report that lacks context and clarity as if he wants people to take his words like a bible. He's not even bother to say what are these 7 games that only sold 100K after making that shiny graph.
Instead of berating the physical enthusiasts, the digital advocates should channeling their efforts at Sony to offer proper insurances for their purchases
Completely agreed but sadly it's not gonna happen. They rather mocking physical fans than confronting Sony to do better policy for digital games and PS store.
Comic-Con attendees are able to grab an exclusive physical version of the comic, but a digital rendition is available to all via subscription service Marvel Unlimited.
It's only 1 volume with probably 15-20 pages and part of the game marketing. But Sony / Marvel can't just make it free for anyone without locked it behind subscription service. SMH π
I give my kudos to Capcom though. They worked together with Udon Comics for SF 6 prequel mini-series and they made those comics FREE to read for everyone without the need to create Capcom or Udon account / subs https://www.streetfighter.com/6/comics/en/
Just wait, in 20 years all of your discs will be glorified frisbees
I owned multiple 2 decades old PS1, PS2, and PS3 disc and they're still working just fine. I also owned more than a decade old Vita, NDS, and 3DS cartridge and they're still working flawlessly.
Heck, i've seen Atari, NES, SNES, Neo Geo, Sega Master System & Mega Drive, and Gameboy cartridge also still working despite they're more than 3 decades old. Physical copy can have the same if not more than average human life span if the owners put a proper treatment with their collection.
Meanwhile, over the years Sony and 3rd party publishers has delisted tons of digital games from online store. Some of them are completely gone and can't be purchase as well played anymore. Like those mobile only or F2P games for example, they got shut down and can't be redownload and played anymore. I'd bought a couple of items on Tekken Revolution and Ace Combat Infinity for PS3 and when Bamco shut them down, both games can't be redownload or played anymore. And did Sony / Bamco refund my money? Nope.
Physical copy isn't flawless either, especially for games that requires internet to play. But at least with physical copy people still have enough control compare to digital only games where you put 100% trust towards Sony / publishers to keep and play your digital library.
It's amusing to see Sony stay silent despite they fked up really hard, even worst than the day Crazy Ken said people would do double job to buy $600 PS3.
@DennisReynolds Nice. I played all of them except Hulk Ultimate Destruction and i heard good things about it as the peak Hulk games.
And yeah, Marvel games has a long history of licensing issues and they also charged a lot of royalty for a limited time. It's no wonder why no company bother to remaster Punisher PS2, Ultimate Spider-Man, X-Men Legends 1 & 2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2, etc etc.
I've been playing superhero games, DC and Marvel, since NES era and i never get bored of them especially if they're good games.
Some of my favorites on retro consoles:
Batman 1989 and Revenge of the Joker for NES and Batman 1989 for Sega MD
The Adventure of Batman and Robin for Sega MD
Spiderman: Maximum Carnage for Sega MD
Spiderman 1 for PS1
X-Men 2: Clone Wars for Sega MD
X-Men Legends 2 for PS2
Sony is right to invest on superhero games. People loves it and the trend rarely dip for video games despite DC or Marvel made some stink on box office.
@ButteredCrumpet Thanks for the kind offer. But sadly Chaos Rings 1 doesn't have physical copy. Chaos Rings 3 have physical copy for Vita that also includes Chaos Rings 1 and 2 but both are download code, which is useless because both games already delisted from Vita store. It's a pain and one of the reason why we still need physical media for games preservation.
Btw, it seems no one in here doesn't know or ever played Chaos Rings. The game was developed by Media.Vision, the same devs who developed Sony's Wild Arms and Sega's Valkyria Chronicles. For me, Chaos Rings 1 is one of the best JRPG i ever played. It's Media.Vision top works and it's sad their top works are gone and can't be played by a lot of people, unless using emulator. Here's one of the review for Chaos Rings 1. https://www.rpgfan.com/review/chaos-rings/
As for Disgaea 1, i've seen some online sellers in my country who have a brand new and second hand PS2 copy. Either i'll grab a PS2 copy from them or the HD remake for PS4.
@Almost_Ghostly That's the first thing i've tried and also from both PS3 and Vita store and both games was gone from my download list. If it's working, i wouldn't be here.
And I guess at the end I really don't care if you don't provide actual substantial proof of your misinformation
Misinformation? Again, i don't have any solid reason why i should do that.
that you haven't done what it takes on your end to make the game playable. Shrug.
You seem like a smart and kind guy. If you really know how to make delisted digital games appear to my library and i can redownload them again, legally btw, then by all means you can spell it in here. I would love to replay Disgaea and Chaos Rings on my PS3 and Vita.
@Almost_Ghostly That IS my account and i don't have any reason to lie. I don't care if some anon like you don't believe me. I don't get anything either even if you believe me.
You say you lost access to Disgaea, ok Iβll take your word for it even though I canβt find anyone else say they own it and canβt download it.
You're saying i'm lying? Here's a picture from my PS3 account that i owned the game and i can't even played it despite the game still installed on my PS3 HDD.
And my Vita memory stick that has Chaos Rings got corrupt. By the time i want to redownload the game, it's already long gone from my download list.
Either way, Iβm not spending my time sitting around worrying about whether I might lose access to one or two owned games in 20 years time. I abandoned all physical media I owned a long time ago due to a lack of space. Theyβre all gone, lost forever, a consequence of my reality.
Good for you. But don't come in here and acting like an ignorant, claiming it's all bulls* and fear mongering from bad actors. I hope all the proof and facts presented on your face is enough for you to accept the reality about digital games.
@ShadowRJ Yeah i wish more indie games has physical release at the same day as digital or at least a couple of months after digital release. But now after Sony decision to stop physical games, i wonder if indies will still have physical release for PS4/5 or just digital only.
Btw, i didn't know OlliOlli has a physical released. I played it from PS+ and really enjoyed it. But i can't find a copy on my retail / marketplace.
@Fyz306903 I'm pretty sure a lot of indie games has physical released. I owned a copy of Axiom Verge, Valfaris, Owlboy, Shadow Tactics, Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap remake, and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and i bought all of them brand new. Next i would love to get a copy of Blazing Chrome, Huntdown, and Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth.
@Swandivetotheasphalt The one who needs to get back to reality here is you. Just because YOU never experienced losing your digital games doesn't mean the case never happened nor it means digital has full advantage over physicals.
And did you listed and check all your hundreds / thousands digital games? Go check if all of them are still in your library and playable. I'm not surprise if some of them are gone or not playable.
Yes, and your digital copies of those games will also continue to work and be downloadable. Removing a listing for a game does not remove access to it. Thatβs just fear-mongering spread by bad-faith actors
That's not always the case.
I bought Chaos Rings 1 and Disgaea: Hour of Darkness from PS Store and when Sony delisted both games from PS3 / Vita store they also gone from my download list.
Years ago I also bought a couple of digital comics from PSP store and when Sony closed down PSP store, all the comics was gone from my download list. I spent around $30-40 bucks for those digital comics and Sony didn't offer any refund. https://www.gamesindustry.biz/sony-psp-drops-digital-comic-service
Or should we forget the recent case where Sony delisted all Studio Canal movies from users download list and they didn't offer any refund?
So i'm baffled when someone say this is baseless fear mongering when multiple case already happened that showed we still needs physical as alternative buying options as well better ownership for digital products, instead of locked down to digital only purchase and put all your trust to billion dollar companies who doesn't give a da*n about customers rights.
@MrPeanutbutterz These people with skills issues wouldn't last 5 seconds with Ghost n' Goblins series that used RNG mechanic for weapons and enemy AI behaviour & spawn locations.
Like @ManicMitch @IntrepidWombat @IllusiveMan said, this report feels incomplete. It's hard to draw a definitive conclusion from this report and it feels more as if to push "look, Sony is right, no one buys physical games anymore" narrative.
And a total of more than 700K copies for 7 PS5 games in the last 6 months are still a decent chunk of numbers for people in the US who still care for physical games. I'm sure there's more of them considering there's almost 70 million physical PS4 and PS5 games sold globally in 2025.
@Qu1n0n3z I'm a bit sarcastic when i said they only realized it now. Just like you said, they already known it for years but tone deaf to the complaints from regular PS users who thinks the price are unfair.
Although, i'm not sure if Sony decided to do this is mainly because of the complaints from Consumers Protection office or there're other factor that pushed them to do this change.
So all these years Mexican, Nicaragua, and Honduras gamers has been buying digital games on PS store with USD instead of their own regional currency? Dang Sony, that just fked up.
And only NOW Sony realized oh wait these three countries doesn't used USD and should get their own regional price? That's just crazy.
I think Mexican, Honduras, and Nicaragua gamers should get some compensation from Sony since all these years they've been forced to pay more than they should. But i doubt Sony would give back at least $10-20 credits for their PS store wallet.
I like my shelves of games, and I hate the entire concept of digital entertainment. Itβs far less of a piece of art and more of a product. At least thatβs how it is for me.
I don't hate digital games. But i'm with you that looking at my shelves give me feels that games are a piece of art and not just some contents to consume. I don't get that feeling when i'm scrolling down my digital games or download list.
Now, is that a threat, a declaration of intent, or something else.
A simple prediction.
Don't worry, a mere physical release fans like me are no threat for your Sony overlord. You don't need to bark at me as if i'm gonna bankrupt them with my complaint.
yet you don't seem to be lambasting those who are rising up in your cause simply to cause disruption to those unable to change Sony's decision
Lambasting them doesn't solve this situation and prevent more devs for getting caught in the crossfire. They're not the source that cause this situation.
And like i said in that same thread, these indie devs have my sympathy for getting caught in the crossfire. The only way to stop this is from Sony. The ball is in Sony court to calm down people and fix this situation. It's that simple.
So i'm not sure why are you here and keeps arguing at me or anyone who wants physical games to exist.
You want better ownership for digital games then go bark and stomp your feet at Sony, MS, Nintendo, EA etc, NOT at me who wants every gamers to have buying options instead of living under Sony / corporate monopoly where you don't have any control at all with your purchased digital games.
Now, don't reply me again. I said my stand and if you don't like it then put me on ignore list. Period.
Zone of the Enders HD (PS3)
The hours of playing time in the save data showed 3 hours but i felt like i played more than 4-6 hours. Anyway, ZoE probably one if not the best mecha games with great soundtrack that i ever played. Kiss Me Sunlights and Beyond the Bounds are just top notch π . Really reccomend this series for anyone who loves mecha.
Playing:
Infamous 2 (PS3)
Muramasa Rebirth (Vita)
This weekend i'm gonna replay Muramasa Rebirth and Infamous 2. It's weird that i've beaten Infamous 2 but don't remember the game has custom missions.
As for anime, i'm adding another one to my watching list: Orb: On the Movement of the Earth. I'm at episode 3 and so far i have a great time with this anime.
@tangyzesty I can also say no matter how hard you stomp your feet, Sony, MS, Nintendo and all these billions of dollar companies wouldn't grant better digital ownership over total control where they can easily delisted digital games, movies, or music from their store and users library.
Heck, digital only owners will stomp their feet more when Sony and these billions of dollar companies gonna rise standard games price from $80 to $90, $100, $150 etc because they don't have second market who can act as a limiter to hold them down anymore. They have full control while giving customers a big giant middle finger.
So, we need physical as well better digital ownership. It's not one or the other.
@belmont Insomniac Spiderman and Wolverine are not in Marvel earth-616 universe. So they can created a different looking character compare to the main universe.
from the screenshot above, she looks nothing like Deathstike
Lady Deathstrike has a couple of different design in the comics. You probably only remember her classic design that also used in X-Men tv show. But she also looks like this Or this
This Insomniac version still have her iconic adamantium nails though.
I bet people will buy these remasters on day 1 like they did with Oblivion remastered and then they got angry that the games has full with bugs and crashing just like Oblivion remastered π€£
@Intr1n5ic Big chance PS4/5 digital library will be playable on PS6. But digital BC and price are not enough for PS6 to compete with Switch 2.
PS6 needs killer exclusive games that appeals to Japanese taste. The question is can Sony 1st party provide those games since most Japanese 3rd party already multiplat.
@Intr1n5ic Ok then what's your basis for saying a digital PS6 handheld that could be price at $1000 will be massive in Japan, especially when the market still heavily favor physical release and Nintendo games?
@mvhess So how you're willing to break up Sony monopoly by acting defeatist as if there's nothing people can do to change this?
On the other hand, you're judging and criticizing people who tries to break that monopoly from your high horse. Sure their action looks kinda rough by involving some indie devs who doesn't have anything to do with Sony decision. But at least they did something to change this situation, unlike you. Heh.
@cainhurst94 PSP Go and Vita doesn't sold well in Japan despite Sony gave a competitive price for both handheld. And now you're saying PS6 handheld which could be a lot more expensives than Switch 2 will do well in Japan and even have bigger install base than PS home consoles?

https://www.vice.com/en/article/microsoft-deletes-xbox-players-25-year-old-account-erasing-digital-game-library/
So i'm baffled when someone say this is baseless fear mongering when multiple case already happened that showed we still needs physical as alternative buying options as well better ownership for digital products, instead of locked down to digital only purchase and put all your trust to billion dollar companies who doesn't give a da*n about customers rights.
Re: Going Platinum: It Was a Pleasure to Grind Returnal for That RNG Trophy
@MrPeanutbutterz These people with skills issues wouldn't last 5 seconds with Ghost n' Goblins series that used RNG mechanic for weapons and enemy AI behaviour & spawn locations.
Re: Sales Data Paints a Very Grim Picture for Physical PS5 Games in the USA
Like @ManicMitch @IntrepidWombat @IllusiveMan said, this report feels incomplete. It's hard to draw a definitive conclusion from this report and it feels more as if to push "look, Sony is right, no one buys physical games anymore" narrative.
And a total of more than 700K copies for 7 PS5 games in the last 6 months are still a decent chunk of numbers for people in the US who still care for physical games. I'm sure there's more of them considering there's almost 70 million physical PS4 and PS5 games sold globally in 2025.
@EVIL-C Right on brotha π€
Re: PS5's Regional Pricing Switch Has Players Concerned Yet Again, Here's What's Happening
Re: PS5's Regional Pricing Switch Has Players Concerned Yet Again, Here's What's Happening
Re: Indie Devs Unfairly Attacked Over Sony Decision to Stop Making Discs
@ShadowRJ
I don't hate digital games. But i'm with you that looking at my shelves give me feels that games are a piece of art and not just some contents to consume. I don't get that feeling when i'm scrolling down my digital games or download list.
Re: Indie Devs Unfairly Attacked Over Sony Decision to Stop Making Discs
@ButteredCrumpet
A simple prediction.
Don't worry, a mere physical release fans like me are no threat for your Sony overlord. You don't need to bark at me as if i'm gonna bankrupt them with my complaint.
Period.
Re: Indie Devs Unfairly Attacked Over Sony Decision to Stop Making Discs
Like i said in that Denshattack thread, there will be more devs caught in the crossfire if Sony stays silent.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 642
Finished:
The hours of playing time in the save data showed 3 hours but i felt like i played more than 4-6 hours. Anyway, ZoE probably one if not the best mecha games with great soundtrack that i ever played. Kiss Me Sunlights and Beyond the Bounds are just top notch π . Really reccomend this series for anyone who loves mecha.
Playing:
This weekend i'm gonna replay Muramasa Rebirth and Infamous 2. It's weird that i've beaten Infamous 2 but don't remember the game has custom missions.
As for anime, i'm adding another one to my watching list: Orb: On the Movement of the Earth. I'm at episode 3 and so far i have a great time with this anime.
Have a nice weekend everyone π»
Re: 'It's Totally, Totally Irrelevant': GameStop Boss Unfazed by Sony's Physical Discs Decision
Re: This Incoming PS Plus Premium Classic Will Have a Full Set of Trophies
@shonenjump86 Yeah that's Shinkiro artworks for Psi-Ops Japanese version. The artist used to work for SNK.
Re: Wolverine PS5 Trailer Quietly Confirms Another Major Villain
@belmont Insomniac Spiderman and Wolverine are not in Marvel earth-616 universe. So they can created a different looking character compare to the main universe.
Re: Wolverine PS5 Trailer Quietly Confirms Another Major Villain
@belmont
Lady Deathstrike has a couple of different design in the comics. You probably only remember her classic design that also used in X-Men tv show. But she also looks like this

Or this
This Insomniac version still have her iconic adamantium nails though.
Re: Fallout 3, New Vegas PS5 Remasters Confirmed by Bethesda
I bet people will buy these remasters on day 1 like they did with Oblivion remastered and then they got angry that the games has full with bugs and crashing just like Oblivion remastered π€£
Todd must be happy he keeps getting away.
Re: 'It's Totally, Totally Irrelevant': GameStop Boss Unfazed by Sony's Physical Discs Decision
Re: 'It's Totally, Totally Irrelevant': GameStop Boss Unfazed by Sony's Physical Discs Decision
@Intr1n5ic Ok then what's your basis for saying a digital PS6 handheld that could be price at $1000 will be massive in Japan, especially when the market still heavily favor physical release and Nintendo games?
Re: Irate PlayStation Fans Want You to Buy Games Anywhere But PS5
@mvhess So how you're willing to break up Sony monopoly by acting defeatist as if there's nothing people can do to change this?
On the other hand, you're judging and criticizing people who tries to break that monopoly from your high horse. Sure their action looks kinda rough by involving some indie devs who doesn't have anything to do with Sony decision. But at least they did something to change this situation, unlike you. Heh.
Re: 'It's Totally, Totally Irrelevant': GameStop Boss Unfazed by Sony's Physical Discs Decision
@cainhurst94 PSP Go and Vita doesn't sold well in Japan despite Sony gave a competitive price for both handheld. And now you're saying PS6 handheld which could be a lot more expensives than Switch 2 will do well in Japan and even have bigger install base than PS home consoles?
Re: Wolverine PS5 Trailer Quietly Confirms Another Major Villain
Yeah with Japan as one of the setting, either Lady Deathstrike, Sunfire, or Silver Samurai would be shows up.
Funny that Lady Deathstrike as well Sabretooth and Omega Red also appeared in the latest X-Men '97 episode.
Re: 'It's Totally, Totally Irrelevant': GameStop Boss Unfazed by Sony's Physical Discs Decision
@Intr1n5ic Are you sure about that when PSP Go doesn't sold well in Japan.
