Re: Japan's New PS5 Model Suffers Sales Slump in First Full Week of Data

PuppetMaster

@RoomWithaMoose "But that kinda makes you think these trends are more a PS5 problem rather than a not-DQ problem"

Fun fact. Xenoblade 3, Nintendo 1st party game, only sold 112K copies in the 1st week. With Switch 25-30 million installbase in Japan at that year, I thought the game could at least sell 500K-1 million copies in the 1st week but it wasn't.

And a couple more recent examples:

  • Ys X for Switch only sold 15K copies in the 1st week.
  • Trails in the Sky 1 remake for Switch only sold 21K copies in the 1st week.
  • Tales of Xillia remastered for Switch only sold 10K copies in the 1st week.
  • FF Tactics remastered for Switch only sold 41K copies in the 1st week.

So no, this isn't a "PS5 only problem" like you believes. It is what it is: the majority of Japan just doesn't give a damn about RPG not-DQ or Pokemon anymore. Japan RPG market has totally changed compare to 20-30 years ago.

"It's hard to say if that's a software or just a hardware problem, but it does seem like Sony doesn't even try to put out stuff for their native fans these days."

What do you think Sony did back in PS3 and PS4 era? They pumped out those Japanese games left and right and most of them ended as a flop. White Knight Chronicles, The Last Guardian, Tokyo Jungle, Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice, Toukiden, Oreshika, Gravity Rush, Puppeteer etc etc. Japan doesn't want them.

Heck. Even Astro Bot, a GotY winner developed by Japanese devs and fit perfectly for Japan audiences taste, only sold 12K copies in the 1st week despite it received 36/40 from Famitsu and solid marketing from Sony.

I think there's not much Sony can do with Japan...

Re: Future Total War Games Will Finally Invade PlayStation

PuppetMaster

I remembered one of my college friend loves this series so much and he really pushed me to try it. So i borrowed his Shogun: Total War copy since i love Japan history & samurai and i felt quite overwhelming with all the mechanics. While i kinda enjoyed a bit of the build infrastructure, trade, diplomacy, and the battles, in the end this series and RTS in general is just not my cup of tea. But i get it why some people enjoyed it.

@Coffeeglitch "Japan doesn’t care about much for these narrative driven “dad and kid struggling with life”. They want JRPGs, good mechanics, more creativity. They don’t want live services and western action games."

It's the opposite.

1. Japan doesn't care about creative / unique Sony games like Astro Bot, Tearaway, Puppeteer, or Gravity Rush. Go check their sales in Japan and tell me if they even pass 500K copies.

2. Nowadays, a lot if not most JRPG's doesn't sold that well in Japan either. Some examples:

  • Eiyuden Chronicles only sold 65K copies in the 1st month all Switch, PS4, and PS5 ver combine.
  • Suikoden 1 & 2 HD only sold 49K copies in the 1st week all version combine.
  • FF XVI only sold 330K copies in the 1st week.
  • FF VII Rebirth only sold 262K copies in the 1st week.
Japan doesn't give a damn if it's not Dragon Quest or Pokemon.

3. On the other hand, live service-gacha-waifu games are dominated Japan. From Nikke, Genshin Impact, Monster Strike, Fate GO, Umamusume etc. Even some western games like Minecraft, Fortnite, Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yotei, Spiderman, COD except Blops 7 did really well.

Re: PS5 Action RPG The God Slayer Getting Full Support from Sony, First Gameplay Footage Is Jaw-Dropping

PuppetMaster

@Oram77 I don't think people gonna buy LSA either even if it's price at $30-40 at launch, not when it has that level of technical issues.

And the game has been in development for more than a decade with Sony poured a good chunk of money into the project. They've been patience enough to support Yang Bing for that long, from start to finish. If LSA handled by MS or Embracer, i bet they already cancelled the project years ago.

Sony did their job but Yang Bing didn't. He failed to answer Sony's support for him with a good game.

PuppetMaster

"Worse visuals than past games"

I thought i'm the only one who think the graphics looks rough and less polished than Octo 2 after i played the demo.

I'm just not convinced at all after done with the demo. Feels like the story isn't interesting and then the silent protag which i personally never like.

Re: Sounds Like Saudi Arabia Will Own Almost All of EA After Buyout

PuppetMaster

Not a fan of EA and the only EA games that i played and enjoyed in the last 10 years was Titanfall 2, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, and SW Jedi Fallen Order (not yet played Survivor).

Titanfall and Mirror's Edge are pretty much dead and buried along with Dead Space. And i think i'm fine if i skip Star Wars games.

So for me the Saudi's can do whatever they want with EA.

Re: 'What If I, Y'Know, Design the Next Console?': How Mark Cerny Pitched Himself as PS4's Architect

PuppetMaster

@Stepan Big chance PS6 still have disc and BC with PS4 & PS5 disc. Sony wouldn't completely abandon disc when it still provided them with good revenue. Not to mention many countries doesn't have fast internet and still have a big market for physical copy.

@themightyant I agreed with you but i think PS6 will have disc version. The handheld one probably where it needs to buy add on to play disc.

@kuu_nousee I don't know how they gonna do it. That's Cerny / Sony job to figure it out. I mean, if 20+ years ago PS3 can played PS1 and PS2 disc then right now with better hardware & software, i think it's possible for Sony to make PS6 run PS1-PS3 disc.

Re: Mark Cerny 'Loved' Legend of Dragoon, But Admits It 'Can't Possibly Be as Good' as He Remembers

PuppetMaster

This makes me want to contine my playthrough again. I think i stopped at some market or something.

And while some stuff doesn't age well like the early 2000 voice acting and the QTE combo / counter timing are too strict but i think the rest are still good.

@Areus I believe the original devs already disbanded long before Japan studio got closed down. And with Shu already left Sony, there's probably no one in SIE internal who familiar enough with the IP and wants to revive it...

Re: PS5 Is Edging Out the Switch 2 in the UK So Far This Year

PuppetMaster

@Dodoo "why limit yourself?"

Because time and especially money are limited.

Video games is an expensives hobby. Not everyone has the luxury to buy multiple consoles and keep up with the latest games without the need to worry for their financials became red. Especially in current economy where everything became crazy expensives.

And even if you have the money then time is the problem. Finding enough time to just play and finished one game would be hard if you have 9-5 workshift every week.

Re: PS5 Is Edging Out the Switch 2 in the UK So Far This Year

PuppetMaster

@Member_the_game Ok now i get it that you only wanted to pointed out the flaws with the headline which you're right.

But like it or not, that's how headline works. If it doesn't look clickbait or bombastic, people wouldn't click or even read the article. Not saying i agreed or support the method. But i understand why many gaming / news media did it since i used to be a freelance contributor for two gaming sites. I rarely used clickbait or bombastic headline and the traffic wasn't good most of the time lol.

Re: PS5 Is Edging Out the Switch 2 in the UK So Far This Year

PuppetMaster

@Member_the_game "If the article was specifically about sales for October then that would be fair enough, but it wasn't it was about 2025 as a whole."

Sorry if i sound rude. But the article already mention it's not fair to compare 12 months PS5 with 6 month Switch 2:
"Obviously, the PS5 has the advantage of being a more mature piece of hardware, and has been available for the entirety of 2025 where Nintendo’s new console didn’t launch until 5th June."

Hence why they only compare like 1 or 2 months sales specifically october sales:
"In fact, in October specifically, Sony’s console registered a 36% increase in sales which saw it assert its position as the best-selling system of the month."

It even thrown a question if this result will stay until the holiday end as well PS advantage with UK market:
"Whether it can hold on against the Switch 2 over Christmas remains to be seen. Some readers may note that the UK has always been a more challenging territory for Nintendo, even though it still enjoys plenty of success there."

But the main point with this article never been about "12 months PS5 vs 6 months Switch 2". But how PS5, a 5 years old dedicated home console, still have positive growth and can toe to toe with Switch 2, the newest hybrid console who has better supply, cheaper price, and more hype behind it than PS5. It's nothing deep or even unfair.

Again, i'm sorry if i sound rude but maybe, you should re-read the article from top to bottom to get the full context before posting your comment 🙏

Re: Going Platinum #1: Rocket League

PuppetMaster

I enjoyed Rocket League many moons ago but i never have the motivation to get plat trophy.

I kinda forgot what's my 1st plat, i think Batman: Arkham Asylum?

But this is a nice feature and i hope PushSquare keeps doing it on every week along with Quiz.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 609

PuppetMaster

This weekend i'm taking a break from video games. Next week is december which means it's almost new year. So, i need to work with my inventory and stuff.

But i finished Splinter Cell: Blacklist and really enjoyed it. I give it an 8/10 despite a couple of issues. I think some fans are too harsh with this game.

I've also played Neon Inferno demo and i really like it. I don't think this game deserves a 6/10.

Have a great weekend everyone 🍻
