Some PS5 Fans Believe a New God of War Game Could Shadow Drop This Week 1

There’s a wild rumour doing the rounds that a new God of War game could shadow drop during this week’s State of Play.

While it seems unthinkable, it’s worth underlining that, if true, this is almost certainly the Greek-themed Metroidvania-style 2.5D side scroller, which is allegedly in development at Mega Cat Studios.

This game was supposedly originally due out last year, but was purportedly pushed into 2026 in order to add voice acting.

Now fans have picked up on comments from Spanish YouTubers, including one named Revenant, who has suggested there’ll be one particularly massive announcement from a beloved saga later this week.

Judging by detective work by PlayStation Ultimate, it seems Revenant will be working with PlayStation Spain to livestream this week’s State of Play. And interestingly he notes that he’ll be sticking around after the event to continue broadcasting, with the insinuation being there’ll be something new to play in the aftermath.

While this doesn’t feel like much substance alone, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb – one of the first people to mention this spin-off’s existence – also had an interesting reaction when discussing the project.

Speaking on his daily Game Mess Mornings show, guest Lex Luddy asked him if he thinks “the God of War thing will finally show up”. With a wry smile, Grubb responded: “Who could say? I certainly could not.”

So, there’s not much to go on here really beyond a bunch of teasing and assertions, but stranger things have happened. Shadow drops do tend to get decent momentum, and we daresay a side-scrolling God of War game would attract a lot of interest.

What’s going to be particularly fascinating about this one is which platforms it’s on. PS5 is a lock, of course, but could Sony also explore the Switch as a target platform for this title, like it did with LEGO Horizon Adventures?

We’ll find out if there’s any truth to any of this in a few days.
