Earlier this week, Sony finally announced Guerrilla Games' co-op multiplayer Horizon spin-off that it's been working on for years.
Called Horizon Hunters Gathering, the game is a PvE co-op action game, in which teams of three embark on various missions to fight back against hostile machines that threaten the land.
Taking control of various hero characters, the game features several modes of play — including a story you can play solo — as well as roguelike elements baked into the way you build yourself up during the course of a run.
The reaction to the game has been divisive to say the least, with many lamenting the game's bold art direction and character designs.
It seems Sony has taken some notice of the broadly negative response, as it's just opened up a survey, where it invites participants to tell the platform holder what they think of the game.
The survey poses questions about the Horizon Hunters Gathering reveal video as well as the game itself.
No matter how you feel about Guerrilla's co-op spin-off, it's probably worth sharing your thoughts, as Sony will be hoping to learn what people like and don't like so the end product can be improved.
The game's first public playtest is due to get underway later this month, and that will be the first real opportunity to form some firm thoughts on how it's shaping up.
Per the reveal video, Guerrilla is keen to work alongside players to help shape the game. That being said, we highly doubt it'll make any major alterations to the art style at this point, which does seem to be the biggest point of contention from what we've seen.
Anyway, at least you can tell Sony how you feel, one way or the other.

Of course this isn't going to attract the trolls 🙄
The amount of hate the game is getting im sure il get selected for the Beta as im the only one that signed up probably haha
@Iplaygames4565 I'm signed up to the beta as well, might as well give it a try as it's free, if you don't like the beta then you know not to waste your time with the full release.
I got the email last night and shared my honest opinion of what I’ve seen. I’m sure they’ll enjoy reading it.
I am mostly curious about the story part. I wonder how long and satisfying it's gonna be.
I feel like we (playstation players) should have gotten Steel Frontiers as it literally looks like the other games and would have gone over much better with the players.
I like the idea but it's just not what I was hoping for. Over the past few years I was building this up in my mind to being an Horizon Monster Hunter game, with the exact same gameplay and visuals as Forbidden West.
Sony need to be really careful with this game, if this has a Concord moment then that could really effect the main Horizon games going forward.
god i hate that Fortnite-esque art style everything is going for now days
@trev666 And the “well THAT just happened!” smirks are just utterly insufferable as well.
Just filled out the survey a few moments. I stated that it's odd to me that the mobile Horizon game, Steel Frontiers, looks more like a Horizon game than Hunters Gathering in terms of the artwork, style of gameplay, and environment. Truly baffling that the mobile game looks like it should be the one on console and the console game should be on mobile.
I think Sony already knows what many will think about this game, otherwise why reveal it the week before their State of Play?
Looks good to be honest, people just assume cartoony artstyle = fornite. Even though the artstyle is different.
Playing nightreign these days and this looks great. Seems really like a mix of monster hunter, nightreign and horizon.
Just a slight bummer they aint bringing this to switch 2.
@carlos82 Also think think the fact the main dev said at the start of the video "we love single player games, and will continue to make them" they knew what was coming.
How about liking nothing at all about this game is love horizon not this though it is a bit annoying they could be making part 3 instead of wasting there time with this
Very brave of them to do this.
I love Horizons world. It’s one of my favorite Sony IPs. This game look like a run of the mill live service cash grab. They could have been putting resources into Part 3 but instead we get this crap.
add a colon to the title
I'll try a beta, but don't have have a lot of hype for this.
Its way too late to change this game to Decima engine instead of the cartoony slop they used. So I won't bother telling them anything about this game. It is what it is. I'll just patiently wait for the 3rd game in the Trilogy to drop in 2044
What a pointless waste of time! They only need to look online to see what the feedback is.
Hate to be in Sonys survey team today
Not gonna participate in the poll because I have no interest in it whatsoever.
Hopefully plenty give actual constructive feedback. Because if anyone just writes "This is woke, slop trash. No one asked for this, just give us Horizon 3." Then it's just going to get ignored, developers actually want proper critiques, not mind numbing rage.
@StitchJones I'm pretty sure it's using the Decima engine.
@AdamNovice how do you figure that? Decima isn't stylized cartoon. If its an altered version of Decima with a cartoon coat of paint on it, then my OG comment meant Decima as we know it, not cartoon slop
Sony has ignored the sentiment towards all of their live service games (sans HD2). Not sure why they'd bother paying attention now lol
@8bitOG I know well if they keep ignoring people a massivefall is on the way I dont understand why they woukd keep trying something that is failing constantly might as well burn money crazy
I rarely have much to say about a home console game focusing on online multiplayer, but I won't lose any more sleep over its existence than I did over the similarly dramaticized Metroid Prime: Federation Force. Even despite Sony's mood swings of the previous generation, more solo Horizon content is doubtlessly happening in due time, too.
I participated just to add my drop to the ocean of people telling them that the cartoonish Fortnite-esque artstyle is a massive turn-off for most people who aren't into Fortnite, and that those who are into Fortnite are just going to keep playing that.
There's no saving this game's visuals now that it's so far along in development obviously, but maybe if enough people tell them, they won't add yet another one of these to the pipeline in the future? Maybe, just maybe, a future MP spin-off of a PlayStation IP might actually respect its mainline visual identity?
@StitchJones The Decima logo seen at the end of the trailer, game engines can change artstyles.
I would play it if it was singleplayer and not like fortnite. I like the graphic design.
I did sign up for the beta test cause I do like to see how the game will be like first hand.
The survey will be no more accurate than the online dialogue. Let’s analyse the type of people involved when these things occur:
1, players who had no intention of buying the game, but want to stick the boot in to join the dog pile.
2, those who criticise the game and talk about boycotts, but the sales figures show that a large number of them do not back up the tough talk, and go out and buy it (The Last of Us 2).
3, Ardent supporters of the title who fight to defend it on social media, but the sales figure show that these people never actually buy games and only support certain types of games on social media as part of their political ideology. They never slam cash down on the countertop (Veilguard and every other major flop in recent years).
FWIW I had absolutely no intention of ever buying/downloading and paying for mtx in this game, as at age 50 I have no interest in competitive or cooperative play.
I think it looks absolutely terrible and I believe the target audience will reject it. However, it is not my place to complete a survey.
Me: I hate the art style and I abhor the character designs. It feels contrived now to do cell-shaded/cartoon art style after Fortnite has done it for a decade. This entire project feels like a massive waste of money, and the only thing I can think of is how much time the studio lost making this when it could have been going towards a new Killzone, a new IP, or even a new single player Horizon. Because at the end of the day, people like me who have been with you all for 20 years and now have the money and means to spend thousands on new hardware and software were "sold" on Playstation allowing studios to create engaging, enriching, single-player stories that we remember like classic movies. We do not want endless "seasonal" online games. Go back to what made Playstation the number one console and stop chasing the phantom golden pot at the end of the battle-royal rainbow for your stock holders and board. You abandon your most loyal customers.
@StitchJones Game engines are capable of a multitude of art styles, just like how unreal engine is used for hyper realistic games and cartoon looking games.
@trev666 Same. Every game just blends together now visually and it looks so vanilla, almost AI generated.
@Dan12836666 they've already burned through billions trying to strike gold. Meanwhile, they've been price gouging us to keep shareholders happy amidst their mistakes. The games that they were known and loved for are in the past at this point. I've already turned to pc. More money up front, but I don't have to pay to play online and steam has the best sales out of all the platforms. Plus now I can mod games
@UltimateOtaku91 @AdamNovice whatever the case, its too bad they did this and just didn't go with the ver. of Decima we know and love. Maybe this game would have a better chance. I understand some people like cartoony games. Im not mocking that. But when you decide to pour time and $$$ into a spin off, in a crowded live service/co-op/hero shooter space, then you are playing with fire by also making it cartoony which appeals to less people.
Just imagine how good this could have been, if it was basically Helldivers 2 concept, but with the insane Decima visuals and you are fighting in the Horizon world vs the machines, rather then araknids or whatever is in Helldivers. Even be as bold as marketing it as such as well. Piggy back off the success of Helldivers 2. Be a clone, who cares. There's no shame in that. Better to do that then set yourself up to possibly go the way of Concord, Highguard or Marathon.
Cause not only do the visuals in Horizon mainline look amazing, the gameplay is king too. Nothing more fun then taking apart machines, piece by piece. There would be so much more depth then Helldivers 2 here
It looks great, love the artstyle, would love to try it and I respect SP game makers needing an online game on the side to keep the company floating. As long as it funds more SP games in the future it's fine.
I would tell Sony you milking horizon like Elsie the 🐄 cow.give me a killzone remmastered or remake.collection.word up son
@TheArt That was Always Sony's intent use the money made from their live service games to fund more single player games but nobody was paying attention when Sony was explaining that part.
@playstation1995 You say milking and ask for another Killzone which already had 6 entries... (I also want a new Killzone btw)
Survey is no longer active... or maybe it's overloaded, lol
@UltimateOtaku91
Yeah, I'm was almost sure that it will be Monster Hunter but in Horizon world. So interesting they didn't go for that. Feels like a no brainer.
