Sony Santa Monica Studio has announced God of War Trilogy Remake for PS5.
It's all in the title, really. This is a full remake of all three original God of War games.
And, well... that's all we've got to go on at this point in time. The project is still in early development, but we've been promised updates as things progress.
It'll be very interesting to see whether the remake adopts the gameplay style of the new God of War titles, or whether it'll stick to its old fixed camera, hack and slash formula from the PS2 and PS3 days.

TC Carson's still got it.
Please be sooner rather than later.
Bold assumption it's for PS5 if it's early development.
Big Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonetta 3 energy there. Flash a JPG and say see ya in a few years, we were working on nothing until now.
Also, all those rumours of a God of War Remake a while back, and they clearly looked at those and went....oh yeah, we COULD do that!
I hope it’s fixed camera like the OG’s
The first game is one of my all time favorites. It came out at an interesting time for me—just when I was a teenager, and finding things that really inspired me. That game, along with a few others, defined my PS2 era. I can’t wait for this remake.
Wonder how many years till we play them, 4?
@Haruki_NLI YouTube trailer specifically says 'PS5 Games' so we can only roll with it.
(Agree it will almost certainly be on PS6, the way it's being framed.)
I'm so hyped for this. My jaw dropped when they revealed it.
I’m so ready for this one! Didn’t really feel the 2.5D game they showed. But this one, hell yeah
You'd think since they still look pretty damn good after 20yrs, why not just release the entire Greek era in one package (especially since Ghost of Sparta and Chains of Olympus only released on the PSP) instead of doing remakes 🤔🙂
Here's hoping they don't make them all "modern" by removing the sex and stuff.
I can't believe this is in "Early Development". Like WTF!? It should had been out last year. Other than that GoW II GOAT for me and 1st and 3rd were really fun too. Hope they don't remove boobies in game and cutscenes.
Please, please let the game content itself be unchanged and not adjusted for the modern audience.
These games were darn near perfect as they were. Clean up the graphics and that’s all we need.
Still early in development with nothing to show?
That’s very lame to finish on. Won’t be out for a few years.
OMG the real GOW games, just imagine how good these are going to look. God of war 3 on PS3/PS4 still looks amazing.
This is brilliant stuff. I'm thrilled.
However if this is in early development then exactly what have SSM been doing since they released Ragnarok? It's been over 3 years ffs
I hope it's a remake in the same vain as TLoU Part I. Give the visuals a great polish, but leave the rest of the game intact.
I posted this on the poll page
I wouldn't be surprised if the GoW Trilogy Remake is being handled by Bluepoint working with Santa Monica. They already helped with Ragnarok and were working with the IP for years after on the live service game that got cancelled last year.
Plus they are dab hands at remakes.
EDIT: Also it would make for perfect project to come up with at short notice after cancelling the other game.
@IronCrow86 the psp games were remastered on PS3, I have em
At least we know what Santa Monica's going to be doing for the next 10 years
I figured they'd just be ports of the PS3 HD collection
Really hope this adopts the 3rd person perspective/ gameplay style of 2018 / Ragnarok.
I didn't think much to the original games, but if they remake them in 3rd person I will gladly give them another go.
Well, anyone who got angry at Santa Monica for not announce trilogy remaster can shut up.
Anyway. I'm currently playing GoW I & 2 remaster on PS3 and they still looks and plays great.
But i'm curious and also excited how Santa Monica gonna remake the trilogy. Although, feels like the sexy mini game probably will be gone...
So many players will be gutted to learn it's a single player game and not a GaaS.
Kinda crazy that we're getting a full blown remake of the Trilogy, caught me off guard for sure.
Looks like some people on here owe Jeff Grubb and others some I’m sorry’s!!! Cause a lot of what finally got shown has been in their ears that they have been sharing for a while now. This has been talked about for close to 2 years or longer now.
Happy to see how this turns out.
I would rather have a 4K remastered version, of the original games. A remake, from modern Santa Monica, worries me. Especially if they make it in the style of the latest games, add hours of cutscenes, melodrama, and remove the naughty "mini games".
Stay faithful to the originals.
So pumped for this. I do wonder if they will change the gameplay perspective so it's not fixed cameras and the like. As long as the gameplay is brutal and I can chain combos, I wouldn't mind it. Also wouldn't be surprised if we get an expanded ending for III showing Kratos arriving in the Norse realm. Can't wait to play it sometime in the 2030s...
@IntrepidWombat
Yeah, I don't want a new perspective either.
Happy days!! Hope they keep it true to the originals without removing anything
Theyll split this apart. Theres no way they remake the whole trilogy and NOT sell them one at a time. Anyway so hyped for this
More remakes and remasters! 😂😂😂
I am still in a state of shock what an announcement
Now that I think about it, I am more inclined to believe they won't change the perspective and core; it will be like Crash Bandicoot trilogy. If they indeed put 3 games in one package that is and I would rather they do that than something more budget&time consuming.
Remake? Idk if I like the idea of that. I really do not care for the Norse GoW gameplay. I mean it's fine, but it's not GoW to me.
Graphical remake but the same game underneath? Count me hyped.
Yes day one to all three if they are released separately or together! I'm also happy they got the original Kratos voice back, he captured rage filled Kratos perfectly. They can leave Christopher Judge just for the newer games!
Also for the first time I hope this isn't a 1:1 remake, I hope they add more stuff and change things around so it feels fresh even for people that played the original games hundreds of time 🙌
Thank you Sony for finally realizing that we want remakes of PS3/PS2 games, not some damn remaster or remake of a PS4 game that already looks in line with many modern titles.
I wonder how it's going to play, wouldn't surprise me if it plays more like the Norse games. But if there going to do that then they need to make the originals more readily available.
@Haruki_NLI - Did you forget that outside of a couple PS5 exclusives, the PS4 was still supported for the first year or two of this gen? This will more than likely be a dual release if the PS6 even releases in 2027, but with the increasing difficulty for companies to secure components to build hardware the PS6 could be pushed back another year or two.
@Kairuuu I mean. They release remakes and remasters vs new games at such a lopsided ratio that I’m shocked that people still complain about remakes and remasters. Also, this is a remake that people actually asked for.
Yes! Had been hoping for a full remake rather than just a remaster. Pre-order for me! Though would have loved it if they did a remake that comprised all of the Greek games into 1 massive flowing game
God of War 2 is still one of the greatest games of all time so I wonder if the remake will do it justice.
@Kairuuu Well people asked for it. They even got angry when last year Santa Monica didn't announce trilogy remaster like the rumor said. So this remake is for people who's been asking for the greek remaster / remake.
If you don't like it then there's the new 2D game.
@JohntheRaptor i don’t get the hype for 2 honestly. 3 surpasses it
also who wants to bet sony monica won’t keep it 1:1 to the originals ..
@Enuo i really hope they don't turn it to much into the new god of war style.
Those games made me dislike the franchise.
Expect though that it may even be cancelled if they say it will take some time to show more.
Untill ps6.
@Haruki_NLI sounds more like this was just filler.
To make it look like they have something to work on.
i was a huge fan of the original trilogy. no question about that. but do i need remakes? not really. it is quite discouraging that santa monica studios may have been at work on this for the past 3 years and has yet to release a ps5 game. i truly hope they have another big project in development that will release before the ps6 launches. they desperately need a new IP.
I don't wanna be pessimistic, but I have this bad feeling it's gonna be one of those "Old games with OG engine, reskinned in Unreal Engine 5" projects.
All these recent games doing that look so... Off to me. Even Crisis Core's remaster lacks a lot of the warmth of the PSP version for me... Which is kinda funny since all of Squeenix's PSP games had a weird blue tint on their videos.
@nomither6 God of War 3 was incredible. Easily one of the best games of the PS3 generation, and personally, I don't think the series has ever topped it, in terms of spectacle and the sheer size and sense of amazement as when I first played it. Graphics, set pieces, the boss fights and gameplay were all incredible.
Excited for this, but it’s also years out.
Nice, bring this to Steam and you can have my dollars.
@Porco "they desperately need a new IP"
Desperately? While a new IP would be nice but i don't think they desperately need it considering they've been a GOW studio since PS2 era.
"The gods of Olympus have abandoned me. Now there is no hope."
Then the main character leaps off a cliff and as he falls toward the rocks and certain death, the screen fades to read "Three Weeks Earlier"
Man what an awesome way to begin a legendary story!
I'm all in for this. But they must be working on something else right? Did I miss something? If this is in early development, what have they been doing? That 2.5D game
Just take my money, Sony!
I'm hoping they mostly focus on polishing up the sometimes wonky controls and camera and keep the core experience largely the same, really don't want these to just be the modern games with a Greek coat of paint.
@J2theEzzo i wholeheartedly agree & my thoughts exactly. God of War 3 in the early 2010’s really showcased the power of the cell and how next gen the PS3 truly was at the time; it was a spectacle and jaw dropping, no other game at the time was on the level of god of war because it was a technical marvel and the spectacle and wow-factor was unmatched. the gameplay itself was so damn good that it didn’t even feel like 30fps because of how smooth and slick the gameplay was. What people know of modern games today, the PS3 did first and was the only console capable of doing it at the time
@nomither6 It's not hype. I played all 3 to death back in the day, even did all the challenge runs like NUR, NUR+, no hit etc. and GoW 2 was easily the best of the lot.
@nomither6 Preach, brother.
And that's before you even get to how grossly satisfying murdering all the gods is. Starting with that click of the 2 sticks to push out Neptune's eyes! Brilliant!
Awsome games don't get me wrong but in the end i hated Kratos he was the bad guy in the guy. I like the new Kratos a lot better. Man i wanted something like Heavenly Sword or Legend of Dragoon.
If its a full remake with more modern gameplay like GoW and Ragnarok then I am interested. If its just a graphical reskin then much less so as the PS3 versions still hold up.
I think this how a remake is supposed to be done. Combine all 3 games into 1, rather than split 1 game into 3.
@PuppetMaster
"...considering they've been a GOW studio since PS2 era."
that's precisly the point. they run the risk of losing talent at the studio due to fatigue and burnout. its no different than the high turnover rate of a studio working on nothing but call of duty or assassin's creed games. i don't think santa monica chose to be the god of war studio by design... they had several failed attempts at other projects in the past and they simply fell back into their comfort zone with yet another god of war sequel. i don't think that is good for the longevity of the studio. they need a new IP to diversify their portfolio. remaking the first 3 games looks a bit desperate.
I wonder how much this is a "Remake" vs. a "Remaster." I guess we'll see.
Honestly, though, God of War 1's Hades level could use a complete remake, hahaha!
Remake, got to love buying the same game three times every generation.
I do really like GOW series. I guess this will be out on PS6 with PS5 pro support.
@J2theEzzo and seeing it from neptunes point of view! it was amazing how they pretty much integrated cutscenes with gameplay, and they did an excellent job displaying how terrifying kratos really was! Each god feared him and died in agony and it was all so satisfying; while kratos was a bit of an ass, people don’t understand that the gods were even worse! god of war 3 was PEAK kratos and the series at its prime!
@JohntheRaptor “easily”? so god of war 3 doesn’t even stand a chance against 2, huh. Can you please tell me what’s so great about 2?
@Porco If they produce a game that looks and plays the same for every single year then sure they would feel fatigue and burnout. But that's not the case for GoW.
And the trilogy remake came from fans demands. That's what they want. So calling it a desperate attemp is nonsense, especially when this is the first time for Santa Monica to remake the main greek games.
Diverse portofolio is nice but like i said for Santa Monica they're not in deseperate situation for a new IP, not when the studio has been staying strong for decades with GoW IP.
"...whether the remake adopts the gameplay style of the new God of War titles, or whether it'll stick to its old fixed camera, hack and slash formula from the PS2 and PS3 days."
Almost zero chance it is the the former, and if it was, we won't be seeing it for years
