Magical Girls Action RPG Kernel Hearts Conjures a PS5 Version 1

Roguelike action RPG Kernel Hearts will now launch on PS5 when it releases later this year.

The title was previously only planned for PC, but has officially tacked on console versions, alongside a collaboration with Fortnite.

If the latter sounds strange, then it’s worth noting that Epic has been partnering with a bunch of game developers as it looks to find ways to steal customers from Steam. Titles like Crimson Desert and Honkai: Star Rail are also getting skins in the gargantuan Battle Royale.

Kernel Hearts will feature co-op multiplayer aspects, as you develop your own magical girl and work your way up the Tower of Babel.

On each run you’ll unlock new augments which will improve and buff your abilities, similar to in games like Returnal. There’ll also be persistent customisation unlocks allowing you to further shape your character.

But while we do like the overall concept and the anime-style cutscenes, we reckon the gameplay environments and enemy designs themselves look a bit bland.

Still, with no release date attached, there’s ample time for indie dev Whitethorn Games to improve on that aspect.
