Re: 'It's Totally, Totally Irrelevant': GameStop Boss Unfazed by Sony's Physical Discs Decision

PuppetMaster

@Swandivetotheasphalt Nothing change for PS5 sales in Japan. It's still the same 5-10K units week after week and that because digital version is a lot cheaper than disc and Pro version. Meanwhile Switch 1 & 2 hardware and physical games are still dominating the chart.

You shouldn't expect any big change for PS in Japan. Once Nishino announced PS6 with $1000 price point + no options for physical games, Japan will go full Nintendo. You don't even need to check Famitsu charts anymore because there will be zero PS6 games in the chart.

@mvhess You're avoiding the real issues here that digital movies, games, or music doesn't equip with good laws to protects the consumers. On the other hand, these billion dollar companies almost have total advantage and control because people are gladly giving up their last consumers right.

Your account got hacked? Sony, MS, Nintendo, Steam, Epic etc doesn't care. They will say that's your own fault and then deleted your account full with hundreds or thousands of digital games. What are you gonna do, sue them? Good luck against these billion dollar companies who can hired expensives lawyers.

It's just weird how some people in here don't understand the gravity of Sony decision to kill physical games also gives huge impact not just for physical owners but pretty much every gamers. sigh...

@mvhess

Never in my 20 years with Playstation have I had a game taken out of my library.

Good for you but that doesn't mean it never happened to others.

I myself got two digital games, Chaos Rings 1 and Disgaea: Hour of Darkness PS2 classic, removed from my Vita and PS3 download list without any notice. Turns out both games already delisted from the store by Sony.

Another recent case where Sony delisted hundreds of Studio Canal movies from PS store and users libraries. This could happen to you or anyone digital games.
https://www.gamesindustry.biz/playstation-once-again-pulls-purchased-studio-canal-content-from-user-libraries-because-of-licensing-arrangements

And latest news with MS deleted a loyal Xbox player account who bought a lot of games worth thousands of dollar. His account got hacked but instead of helping the user to recover the account, MS solution is just deleted the account. No one can guarantees if Sony never pulled this move to their users.
https://www.vice.com/en/article/microsoft-deletes-xbox-players-25-year-old-account-erasing-digital-game-library/

I don't hate digital games. But all these cases is the main reason why physical owners like me wants Sony to keep physical games as a buying option. I don't trust Sony or any publishers will give fair / better treatment to their users once they killed physical games.

Btw. I never see Castlevania fans who claim Symphony of the Night, Order of Ecclesia, Bloodlines, Portrait of Ruin, Curse of Darkness, or Aria of Sorrow as a "not real Castlevania game" just because they doesn't used Simon, Trevor, or any Belmont as a protagonist. Heck, some of those games doesn't have the iconic "Vampire Killer" which is one of the core staple for the franchise.

I guess Castlevania fans are a lot more open minded than some God of War fans. They got multiple games without Belmont and Vampire Killer, two games even played as the series archenemy son and underling, and i never see them angry. But God of War fans going ape sh*t just because one game that doesn't have Kratos as a protagonist ๐Ÿ˜

I can't imagine if this happening to my PSN account. But i'm sure it will or already happened to someone.

But oh well, people wants digital only era where they loves being under the thumb and mercy of corporate greed and shenanigans.

Re: God of War Laufey's Deborah Ann Woll Feels 'Totally Unbothered' by Online Haters

PuppetMaster

@Dogbreath

The majority of the criticism relates to the product not being God of War. Nothing to do with women.

Oh really? Most complaint i've seen is people screaming woke this and that because the game protagonist is a women, not baldy man Kratos.

The dev/publisher acknowledged this by using the God of War moniker in the title, because they know it is far too weak to stand on its own two feet using its own name.

This is like complaining Mega Man Zero shouldn't used "Mega Man" in the title just because Zero is the main protagonist, not Mega Man. When in fact, Capcom used "Mega Man" to empashized that Zero is still canonically part of Mega Man universe.

Laufey is still part of God of War universe and also will be used to expand that universe. So i don't see anything wrong with the devs used "God of War" in the title, not just to boost the marketing but also to underscore the game status as canonically part of GoW universe.

So what you and some people complaint about the devs shouldn't used "God of War" for Laufey is silly and beyond pointless.

Re: Halo's Physical PS5 Disc Won't Play without a Download

PuppetMaster

@LordOfTurnips

I meant growing up in the sense of realising that things change and we cant stay forcing outdated technology into a modern hobby.

Realizing things change doesn't mean as an adult we must accept that change. And part of growing up is to think by ourself without influence from others if that change is really good for us or not. As we all know, not every change is good and that's the reality.

For me, this change is not good and all gamers including any digital only fans gonna experiences the negative effects from the lost of physical games.

Right now, people are complaining that the entire game isnt on a format that:
Takes longer to install
Cant play the game from the disc itself due to slow reading speeds
Cant even fit the entire game on it.
in 99% of cases will have an inferior, unpatched version on it.

As if digital is any better:

  • If your internet isn't good which is the case for many people around the world, downloading a 100+ gigs game would take longer than installing from disc. And you can't play the game when your ISP doing maintenance for hours after hours while your download stop.
  • Bluray disc can fit 100 gigs and if the game has more than 100 gigs then used two disc. And from the latest report, 700 or 93% of physical PS5 games can be play just fine without internet or day 1 patch.
  • Can't play directly from the disc is to keep the optic drive last longer as well minimize disc scrathing.
  • Sure without patch the original game will looks inferior. But that's not the problem with physical games but more of the problem with games development in general. Killing physical games will not fixing devs who released games with plenty of technical errors. Heck, by losing physical games, there's a chance devs will become more lazy because they don't need to print master copy anymore. Expect more buggy games at launch.

Not to mention that people dont realise the cost involved in producing a physical version, imagine how long it takes to print and burn millions of copies, the ammount of energy and water wasted in the production of essentily plastic that will sit on a shelf and degrade over the years.

Meanwhile the cost and amount of energy and water wasted for data center are much bigger than printing disc. Not to mention data center deal massive environment damage too. At least the disc stay on people room / shelf, unlike data centers who keeps wasting millions of galons of water everyday and damage the landscapes.

For me outrage because the game is not entirely on the disc is such a first world problem for priviledged individuals that I cant help but to thing its pathetic.

If you don't feel angry nor feel this isn't something worth to protest then why not mind your own business? Why you decided to be here, mocking people and telling them they're pathetic and needs to grow up? Ironic that what you did looks immature for someone who's preaching about growing up.

Have a nice day ๐Ÿ‘‹

Re: Irate PlayStation Fans Want You to Buy Games Anywhere But PS5

PuppetMaster

I'm not buying this train game. It doesn't look like my cup of tea. But the devs have my sympathy for getting caught in the crossfire from Sony bad decisions.

I bet this will not be the only devs who will experience the situation as long as Sony decided to stay silent and not quickly clean up their mess. Heck, i'm not surprised if this affect some indies to avoid releasing their games on PS4/5 until Sony do something to calm down the "loud minority" voices.

As for the poll, i decided i will buy a couple of PS5 physical games like Pragmata, Wolverine, VF Crossroads, Onimusha, or RE:V but not on day 1. As well some digital games from PS3 store before Sony closed it down. But right now, i'm already saving my money to get retro consoles.

@SMJ 1. I only said this is not unnecessary port, which you should agree if you know your mistake about the game doesn't have PS4/PS5 version. Not sure why you keeps arguing about this as if you don't realize your mistake.
2. Yes. There's tons of kids who plays Pokemon, Mario Kart, Zelda, Sonic, GTA, etc. So i'm not sure why you genuinely believes 99% kids in the world wouldn't put down Fortnite or Roblox for a minute just to try games that looks fun and beautiful like Rayman Origins.

@lacerz

And what happens once my blu-ray degrades to the point that itโ€™s no longer playable? 20 years or so and that physical game will best be used as a coaster.

I have a bunch of PS3 launch games from 20 years ago and they're still working perfectly and no signs of degradation. Bluray disc have long lifespan and they can last for decades if you keep them clean, put it back inside their case after you played them, and store in a room with good temperature.

I also owned a couple of PS1 and PS2 disc like Tenchu 1 (bought in 1998) and Breath of Fire 5 (bought in 2002) as well a bunch of DVD movies and all are still working just fine / no sign of degradation.

Like @Panic_Attache said, these physical copies could last longer than average human lifespan, especially if the owners knows how to properly keep their collections.

On the other hand...Sony already deleted two digital games from my download list (Chaos Rings 1 and Disgaea 1). I'm more worried with my digital games compare to physical games. When the license expired, Sony could deleted my digital games from my download list whenever they want.

Re: Platforming Classic Rayman Origins Looks Fab in 4K on PS5

PuppetMaster

@SMJ

It's perfectly playable on XBOX right now and the Switch version of Rayman Legends contains most of Rayman Origins

What about PS? There's no PS4/PS5 version and PS3 & Vita version will be delisted after the store closed down. So no, it's not unnecessary port.

No kid in the world is going to give up playing the games you mentioned for a re-release of Rayman Origins.

As if you know every single kid in the world lol.

And no re-release of God Hand will be greenlit despite the love that people have for it. In the same way that my two favourite Clover games will never be seen again. Viewtiful Joe 1&2.

Nothing is impossible. People said Capcom wouldn't greenlight MvC Collection after ignoring many request for years. But here i'm looking at MvC Collection PS4 copy on my shelf.

Re: Platforming Classic Rayman Origins Looks Fab in 4K on PS5

PuppetMaster

@SMJ

This just seems like a very unnecessary port. Are we saying that all games, from the beginning of time need to be re-sold for modern platforms?

This game doesn't have current gen version. So it's not in the "very unnecessary" port. Now if it's a remake then i would agree it's unnecessary.

As for the question: i'll say yes

Not just for nostalgia or preservation sakes and you probably don't need these ports if you still have your original copy. But the new generation deserves to know and experience old games that they never have the chance to try before. I would like these youngsters to get off from Fortnite, Roblox, or Minecraft for a minute and try this Rayman or say older classic games like Gunstar Heroes, Street Fighter II, and Link to the Past.

Beside, a port could give a second chance for underrated games. Like God Hand for example. Back then IGN 3/10 unfair review really put a bad spotlight and destroyed this game reputation. A lot of people automaticly avoided it after they saw that 3/10 score with the game ended as a commercial flop as well the triggered for Capcom to closed down Clover. But a port for current gen could be a revival for the IP.

Re: Halo's Physical PS5 Disc Won't Play without a Download

PuppetMaster

@LordOfTurnips

I'm sorry, I really like collecting stuff too be lets all be grown ups here and face reality, blu ray discs are a 20 year old format that barely makes sense to exist in the videogame world anymore.

No, collecting stuff has nothing to do with age or growing up no matter how old the format is or how the format looks outdated from some people view. It's just about doing something you love and brings joy to yourself.

Hence why there's still many who collects physical stamp, old paintings, pogs, TCG, vinyls, old coins or paper money, CRT's, walkman etc despite they may looks outdated compare to current tech.

@PSXB Wait wait. They only expect to earn $4 billion from $6 billion profits?! Oh no, we pesky freeloaders should give all our money to help Sony. Imagine Nishino, Hermen, Totoki, Druckman, and the rest of Sony higher ups / shareholders if they can't buy their 4th yacht or condos because us pesky freeloaders bought second hand copy. It would be sad right? ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Re: 'Millions of Gamers Value True Ownership': PS5, PS4 Represented Half of All UK Physical Game Revenue in 2025

PuppetMaster

@Swandivetotheasphalt

No, they would lose around 10% of that 400m as that is the proportion Sony would be taking as revenue.

10% from 400 million is 40 million and that still a lot of money from 1 market alone. Sony can used those 40 million to invest on new games, marketing, PS+, PSN maintenance, emulators, or pay their employees wages. Now add more losing revenues from Japan, US, the rest of EU market, and the rest of Asia & Latin America market and i bet Sony lost moreee money as well goodwill from PS fans from those markets.

In top of that there won't be a secondhand market of freeloaders that contribute nothing to Sony and developers.

While second hand market didn't directly contribute revenue for Sony and devs, but it still a good place for gamers who missed out some games from first release or can't buy delisted games.

Those "freeloaders", your words btw not mine, can turn into a new fans who will buy a brand new copy or day 1 buyers in the future. Heck their words of mouth also can help revive an IP or at least generate a good buzz for publisher to do remaster / re-release of classic games. A good example for this case is Marvel vs Capcom 2. Tons of people can't buy this game from PS3 and X360 store because Capcom delisted it years ago and there's no Steam release either. But a lot of people bought second hand PS2, Xbox, Dreamcast copy (or started playing fightcade) and they became a new MvC 2 fans who voices their request that leads to Capcom released Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection (which sold well around 1 million copies). I'm one of those freeloaders and i bought MvC Fighting Collection on day 1.

So it's not true to claim second hand market & buyers contribute nothing for publishers and devs.

Re: 'Millions of Gamers Value True Ownership': PS5, PS4 Represented Half of All UK Physical Game Revenue in 2025

@MrStrange Yeah 700 or 93% of PS5 game disc are fully playable without internet / day 1 patch. I've been watching some youtube channel who tested a lot of PS5 disc and some Switch 2 cartridge without internet. This is one example with Saros copy and it's fully playable without internet.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aGQcU92hrZU

This situations just sad. We gamers should have multiple buying options and get more game disc that can fully work without internet. But instead Sony decided to just completely kill physical games.

No company owes anyone any goodwill

If Sony doesn't care about consumers goodwill, they wouldn't apologized when PSN got hacked.

Consumers goodwill is essential for a company. If they don't build good reputation then they can lost customers.

@Jocaju

They are not selling just one product and calling a day, they want you to keep coming back for more. If you go to a restaurant and have an amazing meal, but you were treated like crap, would you go back to that restaurant?

Exactly ๐Ÿค

Re: 'Millions of Gamers Value True Ownership': PS5, PS4 Represented Half of All UK Physical Game Revenue in 2025

PuppetMaster

In fact, Nielsen data says 45% of all physical games sold in the UK last year were for the PS5 and PS4, representing almost half of the revenue generated.

And what was Britainโ€™s physical games market worth in 2025? ยฃ300 million (~$400 million), so a substantial sum of money all things told.

45% market and $400 million are big numbers.

So, by killing physical games, Sony would lost $400 million worth revenue while Playstation also possibly will be gone from a lot of UK gamers buying list and retailers in 2028. And this is only from 1 market btw. We're not yet talking for the rest of EU market, Japan market where physical games is still very strong, US which is Sony biggest market, and the rest of Asia & American latin market.

How Sony gonna replace losing hundreds of millions dollars revenue? They will monetized the F out of their userbase , just like they said back in February. More price increase incoming for games / PS+ / DLC's / hardware, moreeee ads plastered everywhere, and don't expect frequent good discount too. I'm sure you guys loves paying $80-100 for digital games that you didn't own and can't refund or sell back if the games not fit with your expectations.

But this is what those GTA 6 pre-orders and 80% digital only owners who keeps defending Sony decision to kill physical games really wants. They traded games ownership for convenience and noble cause "to save this dying earth from plastic waste".

Oh well, i hope you guys enjoy the era of own nothing and be happy. I'm sure it will be really fun watching more digital games got delisted from PS store and also from users library ๐Ÿป

Re: Sony's Social Media Still Toxic Two Weeks After PS5 Discs Debacle

PuppetMaster

I'm laughing at people who said the complaints as fake outrage and physical fans will forget about this in a couple of days / a week. But here we are two weeks later and counting and it still going on.

I'm sure this will keeps going on unless Sony clarify a lot of things as well apologize for their silence. But that Sony who apologized to their customers like they did back when PSN got hacked are long gone. Now arrogant and tone deaf Sony with beans counters leading the company are here.

Also no, the complaints are not "toxic". Sure if there's death threat towards devs that would be toxic. But so far i don't see anything like that.

Re: 'A Little More Fitting for the World We Live in Now': Persona 4 Revival Rethinks Key Character Yosuke

PuppetMaster

@JPEGMakima So you acknowledged that the creators did these changes not because of their own free will but because they got pressured to do it from external factors.

And can it be classify as censorship? Yes. The only word that describe this situation is censorship or self censorship, which Japanese creators has been speaking about it for years. Their works got changed either without their permission or they got pressured by global authority and western fans who tried to push their believes / culture inside their works.

Like the recent example with Gachiakuta author, Kei Urana, who got harassed and even received death threats by western fans just because she directly confirmed her characters aren't LGBT. These fans wants their headcanon into the series and they got angry when the author said no to them.

Or how Visa / Master Card refused to process payments towards legal adult contents from Japan. They forced sites like DLsite, Skeb, Fantia, Pixiv and Niconico to do censorship if those sites wants to used the card service.
https://automaton-media.com/en/news/dlsite-disables-visa-mastercard-payment-after-attempt-to-outsmart-credit-card-companies/

Heck, the credit card meddling results to one hosting platform who legally provide out-of-print manga to shutdown because they asked the platform to stop distributing manga with specific word.
https://automaton-media.com/en/nongaming-news/japan-is-losing-an-archive-of-out-of-print-manga-because-of-international-credit-card-companies/

This situation concerns Japanese governments and they wants to protect their domestic creative works from global / western interference.
https://automaton-media.com/en/news/no-interference-in-creative-works-japanese-government-proposes-new-policy-for-anime-and-game-expansion-in-the-west/

So no, this isn't as simple as you believes. But like i said, you do you.

Re: 'A Little More Fitting for the World We Live in Now': Persona 4 Revival Rethinks Key Character Yosuke

PuppetMaster

@naruball If the creators feels that way because of their own free will then as a fans i can respect, still not agreed, with their decision.

But the creator decided to do this change because they got scared and pressured from the society who thinks their works feels dated and needs to be change. Which is sad since Yosuke behaviours isn't even to promote homophobia or bigotry but to show how a teenager can act insensitive / abrasive as a part of their learning process to become a better person.

Now, imagine if Leonardo da Vinci is still alive today and he go straight to Louvre to repaints his masterpiece Mona Lisa just because some groups thinks she looks ugly and the painting looks dated. Mona Lisa wouldn't be the same masterpiece that we all known anymore.

Or imagine if Alexandros of Antioch still alive today and he's forces to changed Venus de Milo because the society thinks a statue of a naked women is to promote nudity or mockery for all women in the world.

Yeah that would be sad but that's the world we're living today ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ
