I remember coming here, mostly as a lurker to be honest, to share a mutual enjoyment of videogames, now the comments are full of such negativity.
My preorder came this morning so I was faced with working from home knowing it was sat on my ps4 hardrive, 4pm couldnt come quickly enough for me. 4 hours in and I am frankly staggered that something this dazzling is possible from this generation of consoles.
I am also dying for my pals to play so I can discuss it with someone.
@Shepherd_Tallon That's a great tip mate, I'll do the same.....toxicity really is frustrating me at the moment, especially when to me, games and consoles are an escape from the crazy things going on in world.
@Blaster_master
I remember a time when conversations were friendly and less inflammatory and aggressive on this site.
You could just try and explain why you dislike the design in a mature way and maybe start an interesting debate, this isnt N4G for goodness sake.
For my part, I think it looks pretty cool but if I am honest, the consoles appearance is way down the list of priorities for the console.
It will always be about games for me, and seeing that Sony Show last night has me utterly pumped for the new console, Spidey, Horizon, Ratchet and Clank, GhostWire, Demon Souls and Little Devil Inside have me especially excited.
Would definitely want that beautiful steel book, but seeing as its exclusive to Amazon I'll have to pass.
I rather support a company that sells software as their main area of trade such as Shopto or Games 365 who pay their taxes here in the UK. Amazon will only be happy once all the competition are driven out of business.
I feel like oi am out of step with the wider community in respect of the appearance of the game pad.
I really like it, it looks very futuristic to me, I get vibes of Minority Report, Mass Effect or Oblivion (the movie). In all of the podcasts I listen too though, the appearance of the controller seems to have been met with quite a bit of negativity.
Had my preorder in place for a couple of months now, just to make sure I am at the front of the queue, even at Β£550 it's a worthwhile expense given the amount of use it will see.
@JoeBlogs Probably since about 1983 or so on Atari.
I may well have played games on my C64 more back then, and certainly I gave the likes of Mario and Zelda a good hiding on NES. But as a teen I played exclusively on my Amiga so it was thousands of hours of Sensible Soccer, Elite and Premiership Manager π
Dont get me wrong, there are stack of games I played more, but story driven games played to completion, that isn't something I do very often.
Last of Us is my favourite game of all time and certainly my most replayed game (got to be more than a dozen times). Having said that, I feel the need for escapism and unfiltered happiness in my life.
I bought Nioh 2, Persona 5 Royal and FF7 recently anf while I pumped a good 45 hours into Nioh, I have put all these games back on my shelf (my son is playing FF7) and have lost myself in Mario Odysee and Gravity Rush 2. Mario and Kat I have done a great job of keeping my spirits high π
I tend to buy every other installment these days as I feel like I am mostly paying for such incremental updates. To be fair, that isn't helped by the fact that I alway set my sliders and controls up the same way with each game that I buy.
I also feel like many of the animations and much of the commentary are largely the same since the days where I used to import the game from Canada on PS3.
For the most part, my Pro is fairly quiet but occasionally a particular game will really ramp up the fan noise, the likes of God of War and more recently, Nioh 2.
I tend to use headphones anyway, I use the Sennheiser RS175 headphones, they have the best noise cancelling I have ever experienced.
I think there is a balance to be struck personally.
If all first party titles are migrating to PC or a streaming service at the same time (or close too) as they are release on a PlayStation then my immediate thought is "why do I need a PS5, I'll just upgrade my PC.
If, as is the case here, a 3 year old game is getting a release on other platforms, then I still see great value in owning a PlayStation and its great that the devs and Sony get another revenue stream for the game.
@TheArt I am exactly the same, I kind of 'role play' my 3rd person games, it always broke my immersion if I ran everywhere all the time in video games too. π
I would love to carve out the time to play through each game in the series, but that is quite a commitment. Like you Liam, I jumped at the opportunity to play Yakuza 0 as it required no knowledge of the prior titles and I utterly loved it.
I have recently picked up Kiwami but have been put off by the knowledge that I am unlikely to play all of the games in the series. Your article has inspired me to give it a whirl and, if I burn out perhaps I can move to the 6th game too.
This is exciting news, but there is a side of me which thinks I'll just wait for a complete edition down the line.
I bought and loved Nioh at launch but ended up importing a 'collectors edition' because I wanted a physical version (it's only available electronically in UK).
I adored Nioh so the sequel is high on my list of anticipated titles for 2020. I do need to play Surge, Surge 2 and Code Vein which are all sat on my shelf before I pick up Nioh 2 though.
Personally, I am disappointed at the news Sony are skipping the event again.
I am someone who books a couple of days leave to stay up and enjoy the conferences and get into a good game over a long weekend.
I think it stings more because Sony really did a fabulous job at E3 this generation with 2015 through 2017 being especially enjoyable, so their absence is all the more noticeable. I felt sure they would be back this year as a result of having a new console (and hopefully some exclusive games) to promote.
Their messaging last year was that they had nothing new to show and didn't want to over expose games they had already shown. That cannot be the case this year, so it must be as a result of the rumoured falling out with the ESA, which makes their absence all the more frustrating to me.
Personally, Days Gone was the game in 2019 that I poured the most time into and couldn't put down. I was really surprised by how much I liked it as I didn't think I would find the characters relatable but within 3 or 4 hours I was utterly invested.
I do recognise that open world games are far and away my fave genre so I just assumed I was out of step with the critical reception due to my personal preferences, but it quickly became apparent that the game was gaining traction within the community. I am not surprised at this result in the slightest.
I thought it is an okay game but there were things I didn't like about it for sure.
The map in the game is super conveluted and it is way more of a hassle to get where you want to than it should be. I also thought the combat was utter trash compared to any of the From Software titles, the animation just wast good enough to communicate the parrying timing compared to a From title and the fights become quite boring and repetitive.
I also thought Kal was so very, very boring.... I just never warmed to him at all, he was so milquetoast with nothing cool or badass about him. When you have that universe to create from you give us a boring ass human wet blanket.
Sekiro was supirior to this game in every single way in my opinion.
Good list of games there Lloyd, thanks for taking the time to share.
I am a bit of a wimp myself when it comes to scary games, so I was really surprised by just how much I enjoyed Resident Evil 2, I think it may be down to the balancing of the combat and resources which seem perfectly tuned to give you enough of a chance to defend yourself.
As a huge Alien fan, it nags at me to this day that I cannot play Alien on PS4 as I feel completely vulnerable at all times and as such, the atmosphere is that much more effective to the point where I just cower under tables for 15 minutes at a time ππ
@kyleforrester87
Yeah, it's a fantastic point, I think I would have loved to squeeze that extra value out of my games too as a kid, although I still racked up hundreds of hours on Elite on my Commodore 64 even without DLC π
It does perhaps explain why DLC is so popular despite my perception that nobody cares, which is based on my own group of friends etc who are all my age. Its bloody kids, kids are responsible for the growth of micro transactions and DLCππ
@kyleforrester87
I feel exactly the same although, even when I do Platinum games I enjoyed such as Days Gone or the last two Assassins Creed titles, I find that I am ready to move on and have no desire to revisit a games DLC once I have moved on to a new game.
Hi, this is an interesting list with a couple of games that flew under my radar, thanks for adding to my ever expanding wishlist/backlog. π
I feel like I am missing something as I really didn't care for Control. While the powers were cool and fun to use, I thought the shooting felt off and quite stiff. I also hated the map, it made navigating far more complicated than it needed to be.
It was a nice looking game and it ran well enough on my Pro, but by the time I got to about 3/4 of the way through it I was forcing myself to play it and ultimately stopped before seeing the credits roll.
An enjoyable read and a more than worthy choice in my opinion. I remember importing Demon Souls on my PS3 and falling in love with the genre, but it was Dark Souls that left the biggest impression on me and remains in my top 5 games of all time.
Always loved the idea of having a pop at getting into the industry, especially when I was a bit younger. Without blowing my own trumpet, I reckon I have a pretty encyclopaedic knowledge of all things Playstation (and even more in depth of knowledge in respect of the Commodore 64 and Amiga, what with being an old codger!) and have have been told I have a very entertaining way of delivering content (I deliver technical/legal training in the civil service as a day job).
Alas, I was dealt a cruel blow at 23 years old when all my hair fell out (it was about the time I got wed and my daughter came along weirdly enough) and this only accentuates my 'characterful' facial features - I have a face for radio unfortunately!
In all seriousness, good luck to any who apply and I am excited to hear that PushSquare will have more of a presence on Youtube.
It's definitely the case that some devs really drop the ball with their trophy lists. There is fine line I suppose, the platinum should be challenging but at the same time, I feel they should avoid grinds and preferably, avoid the need for multiple playthroughs.
The list that really drives me nuts is The Last of Us. I have every single player trophy but missed the platinum because of those stupid multiplayer trophies; it niggles at me because I have platinumed every ND title except this one...... Grrrrr!
I am more than happy with my Pro, but I have to admit I am getting pretty excited at the prospect of a new console. That for me is my favourite thing about videogames, there is always something to look forward to.
It's bad enough that Utd are reduced to striking such deals, but even then, the best they can offer are Becks, Park and McTominay in the press details....this is such fun to watch ππ
I adore God of War but I must say, I am getting pretty fed up of the under appreciation of the original titles. The original series of games sold by the million and garnered fantastic reviews yet there is a curious revisionist history going on where suddenly everyone hated Kratos and to a degree, the games themselves.
Well I have to say, when those original games came out I utterly loved them and whilst Kratos wasn't the most relatable character, he was still a very cool and interesting protagonist with flaws which, to me, made him quite interesting whilst being quite faithful to the tropes in Greek mythology.
I am glad they went in a different direction for sure, but part of the reason for the new games success for me was seeing Kratos' rejection of what he had become following the earlier games and how he was looking to protect his son from the same fate.
The games I am most excited for would be Ghostwire Tokyo, Elden Ring and Cyberpunk (and the Zelda Breath of Wild sequel a close 4th), however, if we are only considering games that were showing gameplay then I would say Watchdogs 3, Final Fantasy 7 and Luigis Mansion 3 (and Astral Chain a close 4th).
I know the shows were generally a bit lackluster, but across them all I still have a bunch of games I am super excited for.
Final Fantasy VII just jumped to my personal game of the show, it looked incredible. I cannot believe they found a way to change things up and modernise while remaining so faithful to the original source material. It seemed like an impossible task, but they somehow managed to pull it off.
My favourites so far this E3 are FFVII, Cyberpunk, Watchdogs 3 and Ghostwire Tokyo. While E3 has been underwhelming as a spectacle, overall there have still been plenty of games I am excited for.
I still keep hoping Sony will release a gameplay trailer for release date at some point tonight for TLoU or Tsushima or something, just to remind everyone of how relevant they are. Even a release date for Dreams would be pretty exciting.
